We had a great experience with the HOW foundation. We have a very large oak in our backyard that we have been trimming incrementally over the years. This time we were looking to have an overall trim plus the removal of a branch that went between our house and our neighbors house. The pricing was much less than I anticipated. They did ask if I was aware of the cause of the Foundation and I was. The estimate team And the full tree cutting crew were professional and the work was completed quickly and the results looked great. WARNING to anyone considering How Foundation for stump grinding: Do not let them charge you more than $200 to grind three stumps -- because that's exactly what they refunded us when they couldn't complete the job. They scheduled the stump grinding, then pushed it off for over a month. After all that waiting, they came back and told us the equipment was broken and they couldn't grind the three stumps. When we asked for a refund on that portion of the work, they offered $200. Save yourself the runaround. If you need stump grinding done, hire a company that actually has working equipment and will show up when they say they will. read more

Had a good experience in scheduling an estimate appointment, but it went downhill from there. Pushy salesman. I clearly explained that I was going to get another estimate and did not agree to having the work done. Salesman even asked when they could come by and collect the deposit, and I was clear that I wasn't ready to schedule. Opted to use a different company and am glad I did. Then I got a call a few weeks later saying they'd be coming out the next day to do the work. Had to call and explain that, no, they would not be coming out the next day and got repeatedly interrupted by the manager. I'm not sure what was so confusing about "I'm going to get another estimate before I do anything." Bad experience. read more

April 24-th -2025 a crew of 5 nice Men showed up early before the appointment was set The lead person was very knowledgeable and he went up into the tree in my back yard fully equipped with all safety gear he did a great job not to damage the back house roof all of the men where nice and respectful they did there part it took them about 2.5 hrs then they left then the second crew of 7 men showed up with 2 shredder trucks and quickly moved all branches from backyard to the front they also took excellent care of cleaning up everything. I had one live oak that needed trimming in my back yard. The crew showed just before dark and in 20 minutes they trounced my ground cover dragged the limbs across the landscaping leaving a trail with no clean up. Very disrespectful of my home. read more

Two 12 y/o Live Oaks that have never been trimmed. We had no grass because there was no sun. The limbs would drag on the top of my vehicle and I was having to repeatedly trim over the sidewalk. H.O.W. made us an extremely attractive price for their service. They came in, trimmed our trees. They had a stack 3' tall and 40' long of trimmings. The shredder truck came by, ground up and then cleaned up after themselves. I can now see my street again. I have shade but none of it is on the house, dragging the roof of my truck or disturbing tall neighbors. Could not be more pleased. Forgot to add that the entire crew were polite and professional. I was introduced but I am old and forget. Sorry. And the really big thing. They were early! Took them and hour and change to completely transform our trees. read more

We had a very large branch in our pecan tree, it was bigger than rest of our pecan trees, break off and needed removed. H.O.W. came when they said, were done much quicker than they said it would take and they cleaned up so well, it was like they were never there. I would like to suggest H.O.W. make a follow-up call the day after the service is done to see if the customer is happy with the work provided. I had several issues besides a misunderstanding of the work order that resulted in my roof being damaged by the crew, and it wasn't until I had someone check my roof that I knew about it, and it was obviously done by the crew. A roofing crew was sent out and repaired the damage with my own left over shingles. The Chipping crew left a large pile of woodchips in the alley, blew my dog's toys in the alley and left water bottles, drink cups and cigarette butts behind. They had to be called back out to finish the job because of thier 'interpretation ' of the work order, which clearly stated the work to be done. Yes, the roof damage was repaired, and yes Management was apologetic, and these issues were discussed between the crew and Management, but the entire situation was unnecessary and could have been easily avoided had the directions been followed and a little respect shown for my property. I even bought this crew lunch before the job... I guess I expected better treatment from the start because I tried to treat them well. Will I use them again? Maybe. But as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. And they were considerable less than other tree services, which was why I chose them to start with. I've used the H.O.W Foundation tree trimming services numerous times over the past few years. I fully support their mission and was thrilled to able to use their services and know that it would also benefit the people they train. I would have previously given them 5 stars and actually heavily promoted them on social media in the past. Unfortunately that is no longer the case. I used them earlier this year (2023) and had a horrible experience. I walked them through the work I wanted done on my trees and was especially focused on getting limbs removed so I wouldn't have future issues during another winter ice storm. The guys that do the quote are not the same guys that show up to trim the trees. The guys that showed up to trim the trees were extremely rude. They refused to do half the work I had discussed with the previous guys. They told me the work wasn't part of the quote and they also did not have room on their trailer for the amount of limbs they would need to remove. I specifically asked for certain limbs on my front trees to be removed due to their proximity to the house and my driveway. I went back inside while the guys worked. Within a few hours I heard no activity outside. I discovered that at some point they decided they were done and just packed up and left. They never asked me to come check things out. They also left part of their equipment in my driveway and did an extremely poor job of cleaning things up. I sent several texts and messages through their website and never heard from anyone. About 4 months later I messaged them again about their equipment. They did come pick it up but never addressed my previous complaints. Since they came out I've had a huge limb break off a tree in the front (it was one of the limbs they were supposed to remove) and still have limbs dangerously close to the roof (I am in a 2 story house). Unfortunately I'm not in a financial position to be able to afford another arborist anytime soon. For all of these reasons I have to give the H.O.W Foundation 1 star. read more

I support the H.O.W. mission but am not a fan of their work. The trimming of two small live oaks left stubs protruding up to two inches and many of those were not sealed. Moreover, the trimming appeared haphazard and was just enough to show they did something. The clean up was just as sloppy. read more

This not-for-profit organization does great work on the trees (I've used them more than once) and excellent work giving people a second chance with their alcohol and drug abuse problems. I have two very old oak trees that they maintain for me and ALWAYS their work is awesome, cleanup is great, and the guys are such hard workers. I give my trees the best chance at recovery with them and they in turn are giving their young men the best chance at recovery. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM!! read more

Our date was scheduled two months away and it rained on that day. We had to call them when they didn't arrive to verify they weren't coming. It did quit raining shortly thereafter but did not hear from them. Rescheduled for a week later and again we had to call when it was 40 mins past arrival time. They did work quickly and efficiently but tree limbs went into our neighbors yard that my 75 year old husband will have to go collect. Honest Open Minded & Willing (HOW). That name is a total scam. This gang of slime balls is anything but those things. Dennis the old shiester salesman will quote you a very attractive competitive price for what he writes-up as a full comprehensive turn-key job in order to get you to sign, but in the end that is all it amounts to, just a piece of paper to trick you out of your money. They show up at 10:50 AM when they promise to start work at 9:30 AM, then at the end of the day they wonder why they're not finished, and they start skipping very many things that Dennis specifically wrote in his own contract. For example, he puts a $200 charge in his fake contract for a full chipper service with all mulch neatly piled on site, then sorry no chipper unit shows up, and I receive zero of the mulch I paid to have and was counting on. Furthermore, instead saving 10s of man hours of hard labor by having a chipper to be able to quickly process all of the oak removed, they spend hours upon hours chopping, stomping, and packing, and then tarp wrapping the branches into a trailer. This occupies 2-3 of the 7-man crew almost full time instead of being able to work on the trees. Then when the job is taking 3 times as long as it would have with the chipper that I paid for, the dirty liars start trying to blame me the customer. Not only that, most of the time, 2 to 3 guys are doing all of the work cutting, 2 are hauling and packing and 2-3 are standing around doing nothing except complaining at times, and mumbling nonsense. But, what can you expect when you hire a crew of addicts, drunks, and old dry drunks? I have a huge set of photos (I'll likely add later) showing the absolute huge mess they left, the multitudes of dead branches left on the trees, the entire large oak trees that they didn't even touch, the 3 - 6 inch high stumps left for the trees they charged extra for to be fully removed, and much much more. I could go on for several more paragraphs about what a horrid nightmare it was dealing with this gang of cheats and liars. All who read here will do very well to ignore the many mass mailed flyers and coupons these cons manage to publish and circulate, and never let them set one toe on your property. read more

Those of you that had problems I hope that you pursued the management. I, Like D'Layne cannot say enough about this group of men. I have used them for about 5 years now and they have arborists overseeing the work. Their prices are not as low as they use to be, but they will send you a receipt with the amount that is tax deductible as a donation. I really do not understand why some people had problems ... I surely never had. Their workers are in a rehab program and if they do not keep their sobriety as they should they are quickly removed from the program. I support organizations like this ... I posted this review on Facebook and felt it was worth repeating on Yelp. If you live in the San Antonio area and are looking for someone to remove a tree, consider using the H.O.W. Foundation. They took out a huge hackberry tree for us that had taken over part of our fence and was encroaching on a neighbor's roof, and was starting to go bad. The tree was about 40' tall! They chipped and hauled away all of the wood, brush, and other refuse from the job. This is at least the third time we've used them over the years. AWFUL! I called these guys to come cut my trees. After we had a big windstorm, it became apparent that I needed my trees trimmed, or they would fall on my roof and power-lines. I made an appointment, and two guys showed up, an hour late. They quoted me a price that I felt was high. I began to tell them that I thought that they were asking too much, and they instantly brought the price down by 20%. They asked me for a $100 down payment, which I paid by check. They said that they'd be back "shortly" to cut the trees. Somehow, I (wrongly) assumed that this would mean later in the week. Two weeks went by, and nothing. I called them, and they said that the guy who was supposed to cut my trees got fired. I asked if I could still get my trees cut. They set an appointment for a week down the road. This was the first time that they gave a concrete time to come by. My appointment time came, and went. Nobody showed up. I called to complain, they apologized, and said that they couldn't fit me in for another month and a half. I sighed deeply, and told them to put me down for then. In the mean time, we had another wind storm come through, and the offending tree branches came down. I called to tell them that Mother Nature had done their work for them, and I no longer needed their services. I demanded a refund of my down payment. They came up with excuse after excuse as to why they shouldn't give me my money back. I called, and called, and called, and finally was told that they can't write checks buy only once per month. I was pissed, but waited and waited. A week after they said that they'd refund my money, still no check. I called and complained again. Finally, I got a check, but it was made out to someone else. I called, and asked them if they knew what a refund meant- you are giving somebody their money back. Instead they wrote a check to a third party. These guys are completely incompetent. I am considering filing a law suit against these guys, as they still owe me my down payment, and never did anything right. I know that this is supposed to be a charity, or supporting ex-alcoholics, but I think that all that alcohol pickled their brains, or they're still hitting the bottle. AVOID! read more

The HOW Foundation is a place outside of San Antonio that "was established to create an environment where those recovering from alcohol and drug addiction could become self-supporting, productive members of society by providing needed services to the community." (from the website) They have both a San Antonio and Austin phone number, but it's the same place. I got a flier from them in the mail and gave them a call to come give an estimate. They gave me a great price on taking down a recently dead 40ft tall Red Oak in my backyard. I paid a deposit of half down and they scheduled to come out about 3 weeks later. The day they were scheduled to come I gave them a call around 2pm to ask if they were still coming and they said they still planned to. I got a call about 30 minutes later and he told me they wouldn't be able to make it that day and rescheduled for 2 weeks after that. They came today to start working on the tree. Both the guys who initially came to do the estimate and the ones who came to take down the tree were really nice and friendly. They are very open about the goal of the H.O.W. Foundation and will tell you how much time they've put into the program and what it's done for them. I don't know much about the program beyond what's on the website and what they told me, but it seems like a nice program to help them get along to whatever it is they are trying to accomplish. Also, it is a non-profit and the workers don't get paid. Being able to stay at the facility and be in a supportive environment is their compensation. They took down the tree in about an hour and a half with no major problems. One of the branches hit the side of my house and left a small mark but there was really not much that could be done about that branch. The tree was pretty dead in some places and they did have it roped off. Having them reschedule and not knowing that was going to happen until well into the day(I worked from home) was a bummer. But I'm not taking any stars off because they gave a really great price for the work and the staff(estimators, main office, tree trimmers) were great. You may get less than you pay for with this company. Contract was for $1200 to clean out the limbs of three large oak trees removing dead limbs and suckers, raise the height of the canopy and on one of the trees remove several Mistletoe plants. On seven other oak trees, remove dead limbs and raise the canopy. On all trees,seal the cuts. Arborist pricing the job indicated it was a big job and he was giving me a discount. What we got: 4 guys in a pickup truck with a trailer and a ladder. One guy was the crew leader/tree trimmer, one guy was a tree trimmer, other two guys were cleanup men. I saw only one chain saw. Actual onsite labor time was 3 to 3.5 hours. I had to be in and out of my home every 15 minutes or so to walk around and point out things they missed. The crew leader was not happy when I took him back into our backyard to address things he missed as he had spent a whole 30 to 40 minutes on the 5 trees back there and thought he was done. I pointed out uneven trimmings, a clearly visible dead limb left uncut and a dense area of suckers on one of the trees that I thought should have been cleaned out. I also inquired why no sealing was being done, and was told to my surprise they only "paint" cuts 1/2 inch or bigger. The other trimmer worked on one very large oak tree for the entire time on site. To his credit, he was very cheerful about fixing things he missed and really tried to do a good job but certainly required my pointing out things he had missed. Even with me watching over him I discovered after they left that he missed a mistletoe plant and did not paint a 5-6 inch cut even though arborist that priced the job assured me they sealed all cuts. (Note: The same crew was at our next door neighbor's house the next day and when requested, the mistletoe plant was removed. I did not spot the unpainted cut until a day later.) They did 99% of their work from the ground except for the crew chief getting on a small ladder to prune some limbs on one tree. No harnesses or safety equipment in use that I saw and I was outside with them lot. It should be noted that the same guy told me that when cleaning out the suckers on live oaks they don't go up in the trees and while standing on the ground to do the low hanging suckers they only take off those that grow downward on a limb. In fairness he did take upward growing suckers off of some limbs when I questioned how he was cleaning the trees. I have since discovered quite a bit of dead/unsightly material remaining on the trees that should have been removed as part of the cleaning specified in the contract. I'll also have to climb a ladder to seal some of the cuts they did not seal. Overall I think we paid way too much for the labor/result we received even after considering that we can take a tax deduction for half of the contracted amount. It's a charity, not a truly professional tree service. I get that. But for what they charge they need a professional arborist onsite to direct the crew. If you do engage their services, read carefully what the arborist writes up as the scope of work to be done before you agree to hire them and ask for details on how they will do it. I took a chance with them once but will not be a return customer. read more

I have used this company many times before with satisfactory results. This time, however, I was hospitalized and not home when they came to do the job. Otherwise, I would not have let them leave until everything was remedied. I could not believe how sloppy the work was. A lot of uneven trimming, and they didn't even bother to remove some dead limbs on the bushes they trimmed. They even over-cut some of my trees in the front yard when I only wanted one specific branch taken off. They knocked down a few solar lights on my lawn, and didn't even bother to try to put them back or fix them. My sprinkler system panel covers were removed or knocked open and not replaced either. Just overall sloppy work this time. It makes me sad to leave a negative review because I wanted to support their cause and mission, but unfortunately, will have my tree trimming done by someone else. If you do use them, make sure you're home to make sure what you want is what is done. read more
