3 years ago after my dad suddenly and unexpectedly passed away, my mom wanted to continue to live…read moreat home in the house her and my dad bought and lived in for over 40 years. While my dad was alive, they were able to live on their own alone as they kind of had complementary health issues where together as a team they could manage on their own. Her and my dad were married over 60 years and the loss of my dad left her feeling very alone and empty inside and there were things my mom knew she could no longer manage on her own every day. I have a full time job and 3 sons, so I was not able to be there to help her out during the day with getting to appointments, making sure she is eating well, keeping the house picked up, and providing some companionship during the day, which were her initial needs. My brother and sister live out of state, but we talked and agreed that we would share in the cost of bringing in a part time caregiver for Mom. I talked to some of my friends who use caregivers for their parents and was not able to get a good reference, so I went on line and found 3 in-home care agencies in my area to interview and compare services and prices. After talking to all 3 agencies, I decided to go with Caring Companions Referral Agency. I spoke with Melissa, who is the owner, and she immediately made me feel at ease. She clearly explained the entire process to me and I liked the fact that her and her husband own and run the agency. I also found that Melissa was able to offer me the lowest rate out of the 3 agencies I called, and that was certainly a factor in my decision as well along with my brother and sister. Initially I started my Mom with 4 hours per day Monday through Friday, and then I was able to personally cover the weekends. Recently this past year however, I had to increase my Mom's hours to 8 hours per day Monday through Friday because it is getting harder and more risky for my mom to get around on her own and do some of the personal hygiene things on her own like bathing and grooming as she is now 92, but she is still as sharp as a nail! Whenever Mom's caretaker is going to be on vacation or is sick, Melissa has always been able to find a capable replacement to cover. I am very happy with the service I receive from Caring Companions Referral Agency, but most importantly my mom is happy she gets to continue to stay at home and has developed a very nice bond with her caregiver. I have recommended Caring Companions Referral Agency to a couple of my friends in the past 3 years, and they also signed up with them for Caregiving services. I owed a bill to this business, and called them to try to pay with card over the phone. A woman…read morenamed Mary answered the phone, and when I asked to speak to the owner, she rudely snapped "WHO IS THIS"?!?!? The rude way she spoke to me was totally uncalled for. There are many ways to get that info without being rude and mean about it. You can say: "With whom do I have the pleasure of speaking?", for example. Or: "May I tell her who is calling?" Anything but for the nasty way she spoke to me! And, when I spoke to Deanna [the owner] about it, instead of apologizing to me for the rudeness, she defended Mary, and basically said that they get so many phone calls that they get tired of answering the phone! REALLY??? So, I guess that they have all the business they can reasonably handle. In my mind the only reason to be so rude is if you have something to hide. That is what I took away from the experience. That this business has something they are trying to hide. I'll never use this service again. And, I certainly would never trust an elder in their care.

Mom elected to age in place and eventually die at home. That was her ultimate wish. However, my family all had lives of their own and they did their level best to provide that care for mom. Eventually mom deteriorated to the point where she needed round the clock care. So, the family created a schedule which included splitting up the week where someone would bunk at mom's, sleeping on the couch and staying up at all hours of the night assisting mom whenever she needed us. Needless to say, we're not young either and it began to take its toll. Enter Don Pagunsan who owns this small business, Good Nature Healthcare (GNHC). We heard about Don's company via word of mouth so we gave him a call. Don manages a staff of home-healthcare aids much like the "visiting angels" type of care you see on TV. We were initially skeptical as we had already gone through a couple agencies only to have mom get upset at them and either fire them or drive them away. Don assigned a caregiver to us as we tip-toed in to allowing them in to our family's lives and suffice to say that Don hit it out of the park. As mom declined, we expanded coverage from one to two caregivers, both providing for mom's care throughout the night. We picked up about 6 hours each in the afternoons which gave the family not only the ability to manage our daily lives but also provide us a window of time with which to be with mom. And mom was very pleased with Don's caregivers. They were attentive, polite and expressed "love" for our mom. When mom moved, they were there by her chair or bed-side. They cooked her meals and attended to her every needs. They also kept copious notes in a log book so handoffs took place seamlessly and we were able to track every significant act or activity that took place. I once asked mom if I could help her when I was there visiting and she said, "No, I want Tarah." It became a family joke that Tarah was now mom's favorite. GNHC contracts with you after meeting in person to understand your needs. They bill at a very reasonable hourly rate. They have regular business meetings among the caregiver staff so everyone is aware of everyone else's customers which makes good sense in the event that a quick or temporary substitution is required and coverage is maintained. If you are located in the Irvine/Tustin/Mission Viejo area of Southern California, I highly recommend this company. They are an affordable alternative to assisted living facilities and allow your elderly or health-impacted family member to continue living in their homes. Don's is a licensed and bonded company and from the start we were very impressed. Mom has since passed away and Don and her primary caregiver, Tarah, are planning to attend mom's funeral. They truly do care and I can't say enough great things about this business.

I found Mark at the California State Department of Aging site. Within a DAY, ALLWAYS took action and care was immediate. Mark & team has helped our family immensely. I don't know how I could have given my Mom the care we received, if it weren't for Jackie, her caregiver. She was also very instrumental in "transitioning" my Mom in a way that she was more open to assisted living and care than ever before. Jackie's compassion, attention to detail, experience and professionalism turned my Mom's caregiver into a trusted friend. Jackie tag teamed with me to guide my Mom and educate her so that she herself, independently, made the right decision for herself. She was not only my Mom's "right hand" person--but mine as well. She is now going to move into a wonderful facility (I was referred to a great "broker" from Mark, too) and her worries are over. She is no longer afraid to be alone at night, and has someone within her reach in minutes.
