In the beginning, we have tried numerous caregivers. We started with 24/7 then cut back to only 12 hours once my husband was feeling better. Then back again for 24/7 as my husband's condition got worst. Some caregivers were very awesome and caring but some are bad such as sleeping on their job, showing up late, or just doesn't do anything unless you tell them to. We were fortunately to encounter some great ones who took great care of my husband until his final days. There are few things you need to be aware of: 1) Make sure you keep track the dates and times that the caregiver is present for your loved ones. I had a few days when there was no caregiver and still get charged for it. Or, I get charged double for the same shift. 2) Don't depend fully on the caregiver. They are like us, they might call in sick or have car problems. Make sure you have a back up plan and be ready to take the shift yourself. We had a hard time especially around holidays, when no caregiver would take the shift or cancel on us at the last minute. 3) Make sure your care plan is very clear as there's a potential someone new caring for your loved one everyday. 4) They are non-medical caregiver, so make sure you plan out the pills in an organizer so they can dispense and just let your loved one take the med. Overall despite some hiccups, some of the caregivers took great care of my husband until his final days and we are very grateful to them. It's a tough job mentally and emotionally. I applaud their bravery for taking such hard job.

While my dad was alive, they were able to live on their own alone as they kind of had complementary health issues where together as a team they could manage on their own. Her and my dad were married over 60 years and the loss of my dad left her feeling very alone and empty inside and there were things my mom knew she could no longer manage on her own every day. I have a full time job and 3 sons, so I was not able to be there to help her out during the day with getting to appointments, making sure she is eating well, keeping the house picked up, and providing some companionship during the day, which were her initial needs. My brother and sister live out of state, but we talked and agreed that we would share in the cost of bringing in a part time caregiver for Mom. I talked to some of my friends who use caregivers for their parents and was not able to get a good reference, so I went on line and found 3 in-home care agencies in my area to interview and compare services and prices. After talking to all 3 agencies, I decided to go with Caring Companions Referral Agency. I spoke with Melissa, who is the owner, and she immediately made me feel at ease. She clearly explained the entire process to me and I liked the fact that her and her husband own and run the agency. I also found that Melissa was able to offer me the lowest rate out of the 3 agencies I called, and that was certainly a factor in my decision as well along with my brother and sister. Initially I started my Mom with 4 hours per day Monday through Friday, and then I was able to personally cover the weekends. Recently this past year however, I had to increase my Mom's hours to 8 hours per day Monday through Friday because it is getting harder and more risky for my mom to get around on her own and do some of the personal hygiene things on her own like bathing and grooming as she is now 92, but she is still as sharp as a nail! Whenever Mom's caretaker is going to be on vacation or is sick, Melissa has always been able to find a capable replacement to cover. I am very happy with the service I receive from Caring Companions Referral Agency, but most importantly my mom is happy she gets to continue to stay at home and has developed a very nice bond with her caregiver. I have recommended Caring Companions Referral Agency to a couple of my friends in the past 3 years, and they also signed up with them for Caregiving services. I owed a bill to this business, and called them to try to pay with card over the phone. A woman…read morenamed Mary answered the phone, and when I asked to speak to the owner, she rudely snapped "WHO IS THIS"?!?!? The rude way she spoke to me was totally uncalled for. There are many ways to get that info without being rude and mean about it. You can say: "With whom do I have the pleasure of speaking?", for example. Or: "May I tell her who is calling?" Anything but for the nasty way she spoke to me! And, when I spoke to Deanna [the owner] about it, instead of apologizing to me for the rudeness, she defended Mary, and basically said that they get so many phone calls that they get tired of answering the phone! REALLY??? So, I guess that they have all the business they can reasonably handle. In my mind the only reason to be so rude is if you have something to hide. That is what I took away from the experience. That this business has something they are trying to hide. I'll never use this service again. And, I certainly would never trust an elder in their care.

The first day Dana the caregiver arrived, my mom (& Dad!) were hooked. She was well trained, thoughtful, a "miracle worker" they said. We hadn't been able to get my mom in the shower, it was hard to help her sit in a comfortable position, there were many challenges, and Dana helped on so many levels with a smile and grace. Comfort care was all that was required. Although Joyce was under hospice care, we needed help bathing her until the hospice staff could send bathing assistance. We called Colonial Home Care. They sent the sweetest angel to our home to help. Daisy bathed, changed clothes and bedding so that Joyce would be as comfortable as possible. I couldn't do it myself. Joyce was beginning to sink into unconciousness and could no longer help me move her. Daisy did the job with expertise that alleviated adding stress to my sister-in-law's discomfort. I'm so grateful. In fact, Daisy was such a welcome assistant I asked her to return the following Monday. Before I could schedule the appointment my sister-in-law quickly sunk into death's grip. He assisted us again in June when my mother required surgery and needed some assistance when she returned home. We had people lined up a week in advance. We were able to - with notice - revise the plans as my mom didn't need the night care we anticipated. Katie was my mom's day nurse and she was terrific - as are all of the LWHC staff.
