This is a post for my VOLUNTEER experience! I did not purchase anything...even though I wanted to lol With that said, I was greeted so warmly by the staff there and I was waiting for other members of my sorority to arrive and was given a little background information on how the organization started and how much impact they had on the community. Our tasks were actually pretty fun and we're helping to test, clean, and price appliances and we were able to organize tiles in the home improvement area! The facility was very well organized and it felt really good doing something important for the community! Our sorority will be back in the fall for more opportunities so I'm excited about that! read more

I have mixed feelings about the ReStore. This is a nice location (each is managed independently by the local chapter of Habitat). It's well-organized, with items well-labeled. It has a lot of furniture, and undoubtedly it fills a gap for affordable used furniture on the North side. However I've gone there dozens of times and only ever bought one item. A lot of the furniture is simply not in great condition and priced too high for the amount of work it needs. Why would I pay $150 for a desk whose top needs to be entirely refinished? Sometimes you might find high-end furniture from popular brands like Walter E. Smithe and Ethan Allen that's worth a look, as it's quality and vastly cheaper than the original owners paid retail. However, for every item like that, there are a few pieces of beaten-up furniture that were never great quality to begin with. Interspersed are the occasional vintage and antique pieces, which tend to sit for a while due to being fragile or not having a practical use, and because they're priced too high to be worth it for most people. All in all the inventory tends to be stagnant, which tells me most people agree with me on the prices. Still, if you want to furnish your home on a budget, this place is worth a look. It beats buying cheap "manufactured wood" furniture from certain online retailers. read more

I strongly recommend not donating to them as they think they are too good for your donation and have gotten too big for their britches. I had multiple valuable tools, door hardware, faucets, bathroom/towel hooks, ladders, 8-10' butcher block, tile, and then smaller items related to painting and construction. They make you post pictures of everything which is very time-consuming only to say your donation isn't valuable for them to pick up. I don't know what their value limit is but it should really be posted online ... $20,000? No idea. Either way, the employee Sam had a bad attitude and was very unpleasant to deal with. I will not be donating to this organization again in any capacity and will be giving my time and money to local organizations that actually appreciate donations from the community. read more

NEVER contact them to have your items picked up for donation. We really wanted to donate good pieces of furniture, kitchen ware, and home-business furniture. TWICE there was an issue. First try, the morning of, the pick up did not show up! Second try, they cancelled at 6pm the evening before. When you need to move out of an apartment, they cannot be relied to show up! read more

This place is awesome! I got 8 Ethan Allen Dining table chairs for $375. Looking on the bottom they were manufactured in the 1970's! I have re-upholstered them and they will last another 50 years! I also pick up other things here. I have also donated here OFTEN!! They sold my dining room table for $75. (which was a fraction of the cost) It's an adventure to walk through and see what they have on any particular day. Make sure to give your phone number to get "loyalty rewards". Last week my bill was $8 and change. They told me I had over $7 in loyalty rewards so my purchase cost me $0.86!!! read more

Bought an awesome humanscale office chair here a month or 2 ago, it has greatly improved my life. Retail price was over 1k, I got it for 90. It has arms that u can put all the way down, and the bottom u can pull out. Super adjustable for all sizes. My back is so happy. They had a bunch, I duno if they are still there. The mechanism to raise it up is a lil busted but its a $35 fix and honestly not something I am tall enough to care about. They had one old ugly electric stove, which is what we were looking for, but it was the best price around at like 300. We checked several other used appliance stores. Probably still there. read more

This used to me my go to, to get furniture and all sorts of things. The prices have become just as expensive as going to a furniture store to buy new furniture. Everything here is donated... 100% profit for "charity" however they have just gotten greedy. I should not be able to buy brand new furniture for the same price as used furniture. SMH. Rather odd. They advertise on their web site that they accept ceramic tile as a donation. So, I had quite a few boxes of brand new tile sitting in my garage for a number of years, from a project that never happened. So I offered it to them asking only that they pick it up, and received a curt reply that they were "not accepting tile at this time". There's an old saying, never look a gift horse in the mouth but I guess it's not true for this group! read more

I have been to a few habitat restores and this one always has some good finds! Its been very helpful after spring cleaning to be able to take our extra things here and know they are going to a good cause and not the landfill. This place" use to be a great find". Not anymore. I use to stop by here frequently to purchase items on my remodeling projects until recently. Way Overpriced. Not sure if theres new management or if corporate has gotten involved or what the situation is. Dont waste your time. You would think they would try helping people save a little money because things are donated. But thats totally not the case. Ive purchased doors, hardwood flooring, cabinets, however prices went up drastically. Might as well go buy them new for the prices they got. I use to frequent this place when I lived in MD and shocked to have learn there was one in Chicago. I referred this place to a friend who recently bought a house and the variety of household items there blew his mind he was looking specifically for a shelving unit and found some other things. Even though the Peterson and Pulaski location is closer to me, and I have been a frequent supporter/shopper there for years. I've been going into the store for months trying to snag kitchen cabinets, and someone always gets them right before I get there. Now I know why... I found a set of kitchen cabinets there, and the first buyer had until 6 pm Wednesday to pick up the cabinets. The staff told me that if the people didn't pick them up by the deadline (you have 48 hours after purchase), that whatever they had paid would be considered a donation, and the cabinets would be available for purchase. They did not come by 6 PM. I was there an hour before the store opened on Thursday, and the manager (Marcus) would not sell them to me! "They aren't available. They won't be available. They won't EVER be available." He clearly stated that customers who spend more money there get preferential treatment. He was holding them "for someone who spends a lot of money here." Of course, I called headquarters. They made him call me to apologize. He DID call, but DID NOT apologize. In fact, he doubled-down! He did not - at any point - apologize for how he treated me. Instead, he blamed the cashier for telling me about procedures and rules (that are apparently not really rules). He said that they don't have rules, that have "guidelines", and that HE has sole discretion over what/if guidelines are enforced. He also told me NOW that, that morning, the cabinets were in the process of getting picked up, and that some of them had been picked up in a small truck, and that the buyer was just coming back for a second load. Then why he didn't just tell me that at the time, right? Well, he said he didn't know it at the time. Well, if he didn't know it at the time he spoke to me, that just takes us back to square one. If he didn't know whether the person was coming or not, they had not asked him for extra time, and they did not meet the pick-up deadline, why was he so emphatic in denying me the opportunity to pursue the cabinets? Mind you, I am not pissed off because I did not get these cabinets. I am pissed off at Marcus' lack of management skills, his blatant disregard for following the rules, and his shockingly poor customer service. Well, I notified headquarters again. As a person who advocates for both our planet and for those who must live with less, I am in awe of Habitat for Humanity's mission and until now, have been a happy - no, THRILLED customer. As a realtor, I have escorted and referred many contractors and clients through this location. To put it plainly, I was a big fan and an enthusiastic supporter of this location. I am a true believer in Habitat for Humanity's mission, but this guy, Marcus, is a liability and is destroying their good name. Action should be taken. I will NEVER shop at this location again. read more

Cool shop, for a great cause. Something new all the time. They have some really good stuff, and the store itself is organized well. When we were there, they had a good selection of garden/deck type stuff. No idea if this is normal, but next planting season I'll come back! Worth a visit. read more

I decided to check the restore habitat for humanity store in Chicago because when I lived in Canada our restores were amazing. The restore in chicago is a fair size. There is free parking. The content is 75% junky but maybe 25% bits and pieces of average Reno supplies if you need a one off item. I decided to buy two plant pots which were made of plastic but really nice. I was surprised by the prices. $10 for a medium size pot and $20 for a larger pot. For something that was donated the price was as if I purchased it brand new at a hardware store..I was a little disappointed. I was also surprised there was tax on the items. For a non profit charitable company normally items like this are tax exempt but i am new here so I'm still learning the ins and outs :) The store is far north. It is a hit and miss type of place. I wouldn't go out of my way to go to again like I would in the Canadian stores. But if you're in the neighbourhood check it out. The staff are very friendly. They do take credit debit and cash. read more

We were looking for a spot to drop off some good furniture to donate. We live in a high rise and it's difficult to arrange pick ups. So, we rented a car and dropped items at ReStore. Very easy drop off. Extremely clean loading dock (unlike the other spots around town that look more like a dumping ground) and we're happy that our quality pieces will raise money for a worthy cause. read more

I can't, I can't really pinpoint my reaction to this place. Been several times now and it's definitely a hit or miss kind of joint. When you hit, five stars all the way baby; when you miss, eh, I leave feeling jilted. Thankfully they've cleaned up the place and organized from the first few times I was in so it's much easier to peruse. Their stock of things changes quite rapidly, both items in and items out. Don't expect things to be there later -- it's a buy it when you see it thing. It's a great cause and I'm sure I'll stop in again in the future. But, you truly have to know what you're looking for, how much you need, be willing to do some digging, be willing put in some elbow grease, and be willing to head off to another store when what you need is not there. None of those things are typically an issue for me, so why only three stars? Their pricing is all sorts of out of whack. Some things are priced fantastically, like containers of grout or paint and stain or bits of hardware or tile, but most other things are so overpriced, it'd be cheaper to buy it new. Or busted and overpriced. As in a table I specifically stopped in for after seeing it on their Facebook page only to discover it was an unsalvageable train wreck. Yeah, that's bad. This is definitely a do-your-homework-first kind of place, before you arrive and their policies once you are there. So, go indeed, give it a whirl, but be prepared. read more

I don't know how to rate this place because I feel like maybe it was just not the type of place for someone without a knowledge of building supplies and no real idea of what to get. Plus it's for a good cause. I heard that this place was awesome and I was looking for tile and some kitchen cabinets. In my mind I had an idea that they had newer things that were left over from homes. Instead, it all looked like used and spare parts taken from older homes. It just seems haphazard and to a regular shopper, very overwhelming. Even if you just needed one box of tile, it didn't seem like you could find a complete box. I suppose if you know exactly what you're poking around for and only need a small amount you may have luck here. read more

This place scams innocent people. They sell products that sell so expensive there at regular stores they sell them a lot cheaper and I've confronted them couple times and I showed them couple times and they still did nothing but scam. don't buy it from there we have to make a complaint to the BBB that way they will force to close them down and put these people in jail. This place is terrible!!!! I got to all the restore locations and this one by far has the worst customer service and worst attitudes. First I asked for help. I needed assistance checking additional stock of lightbulbs that they receiver regularly. ( non-donated items) the woman from behind the register who helped me, reluctantly!, finally got around to going to check stock. There was no one else shopping or at the register at the time. Then, another woman ring me out for the few that they had in stock. She told me the cost was three dollars more than what was marked on the shelf. I stepped back 3 feet from the register since the shelf holding these lightbulbs is right there. I said the tag between shelves (top and bottom) which both had the same item on it said the item cost three dollars less. She pulled some sheet out from underneath the register and told me I don't know what I'm talking about. Then went into some speech about how prices are what they are and that they do not haggle. Look for yourself at the picture below. I bought one of the 65w recessed lights. Clearly stocked on two shelves top and bottom with a $4.99 tag between them. At the register they claim the price is $7.99. I never made any attempt to haggle on price with them! They simply do not sell things for the prices they have marked on the shelf. If you tell them they made a mistake, they tell you that it's your problem. Both of those women can go f*#% themselves along with this place in general. Never coming back I'd suggest anyone else follow suit. read more

There's nothing I hate more than shitty customer service. I literally just called to ask if some pieces that were posted online are still available and the woman on the phone said "there are still some piece from that donation but you have to come in and take a look for yourself" again I asked "ok but can you please just tell me if the blue/teal chairs are still available " and she responded again with the exact same response. Like what does it take to be a human being? You're supposed to be in the business of being a human to other humans but instead act like assholes. It would take me over 45 minutes to get there, please tell me why on earth I would drive through all that traffic when you can't just answer a simple question. It's literally a yes/no answer. Based off other reviews I'm glad and called to get such a horrible customer service and did not waste my time visiting this place. read more

Not just a good cause (the $$ build low-income homes) but a resource for DIY'ers, contractors, landlords, homeowners, artists, theatre prop seekers, and those seeking quality items without the price tag. It's all donated, so the daily assortment is like Forrest Gump's "boxa choklits?"... It's "buy it when you see it," though (you'll have two days to return for larger items) since the merchandise moves out very fast. The store runs on volunteers (who each do a few hours a week) with a tiny, busy staff, so anyone is welcome to join in (training provided, and you get a discount!) Heavy lifting is not required, nor even a knowledge of building stuff. You can also donate your still-nice stuff, and the RS truck can collect larger items (773) 539-6040 for a pickup or to learn about volunteering). A lot of ReStore's business is in furniture, appliances (some new), and lighting. "Oddments" are a daily find (yesterday a beekeeping setup (new), a Matisse collage repro in a classy frame, a kayak tie-down kit). You'll find seasonal gardening supplies, mowers, power tools, carpet (some amazing buys) and an endless flow of kitchen cabinets, flooring materials, toilets and bath/kitchen fixtures. Yes, it can be a bit messy, but you can bring your dog along (on lead) in case you need help finding your way out (35,000 sf!) A great deal of the merchandise is new-in-box, but some tools truly "vintage" yet still in fine condition. A very entertaining place to shop! read more

I love this place! They have a large variety of items and the proceeds go towards a great cause. It is definitely on the edge of the city, but I am partial to the location because it's in my childhood neighborhood. I stopped in for the very first time over the weekend while visiting my parents. My mom and I were impressed with the cleanliness and organization of the space. We spent about 30 minutes checking out the layout and walking down every aisle. While I wasn't looking for anything in particular, I had just started a bathroom paint project and the paint section caught my eye. I found 2 quarts of Sherwin Williams custom paint for $2 a quart. TWO DOLLARS. I couldn't wait to tell my husband about my find, especially considering we had just spent $16 on custom paint from Menard's the day before. And for bigger jobs, a gallon of paint is only $5! Please go check out this store. Some items may require a little elbow grease - others are brand new and ready for you take home same-day. They offer a hold period (48 hours I believe) for large items. And, there's a parking lot! read more

This place is a hidden gem. It's kind of like Home Depot, only cheaper. I came here for a random volunteer job, and probably provided just as much economic support buying personal products during my 15-minute break (fire extinguisher ($4.50!), toolkit, light bulbs, random vinyl records, potted plants, toilet paper, etc.,) than in my 3.5 hours of actual volunteer work. That being said, this was a great place to volunteer. Super friendly staff & a rewarding experience overall. If you're looking to save a few bucks on household products, or just super crafty & into DIY projects, then you should definitely check this place out. read more

Shopped here when they were in Chinatown which was 20 minutes now that they have relocated it is like an hour drive for me. I like the new location because they are able to receive more items for donations in order to sale. The prices are fabulous. I don't like the fact that they will not assist with tie down especially since I have a physical disability and it took me forever to tie the items to my racks. read more
