What a hidden gem in Dublin! I had no idea what this place was. I kept ignoring it when I would see what was around my hotel in Dublin and would walk by this place and thought it was super weird that there were barrels outside that would say reserved only, and the windows were closed off. You don't know what the hell this place is, but once you're inside, it's a gem. Hacienda Bar is a speakeasy and dive bar. Yes, you ring a doorbell to this place and the owner, Shay asks you a few questions, like how many are in your party and do you know anyone inside the bar. I was let in on a Friday night and had no idea what to expect. The place was dark inside and small. There were pool tables and seats all around the side and a few high tops at the bar and a booth area. Much of those seats were reserved where the bar area is. I was able to snag a seat at this busy bar. No food here. Just drinks. Order what's local. I had a local ale and a Guinness (of course), and enjoyed the company here. I met a bunch of locals and since this place is so casual and laidback, it was a fun time. Hacienda Bar is known as a secret bar in Dublin yet all the celebrities find out about it. Shay has photos of all the famous peeps that have set foot here and it's been known that Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce and her dancers came here after the Eras Tour and danced the night away. CASH ONLY!!!! Such a random bar in the outskirts of Dublin. You will not be disappointed if you have the honor of being welcomed. There's a random door you knock on. The place on the outside does not look like a bar. A gentlemen let's you in and you walk into a different world. Crazy decor all over but not too cluttered. Home seats and chairs you can use while chatting with your friends. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner and he was so nice and friendly. He has a lot of pictures of celebrities that have been there. Wish I knew about this place sooner so I would've made more than one stop. Come in and enjoy the ride! Lol read more

We found this speakeasy on Yelp! and it was attached to our hotel. The place is very interesting and decorated with a lot of random things. The walls are COVERED in pictures of the owner and hundreds of celebrities who have visited over time. We didn't have food (not even sure this was an option), but we ordered Guinness and Kopparberg cider. The drinks were cold and really good. You've wandered off the beaten track, drank too much and gotten lost. Where are you? You've probably been wandering down these side-streets for days, maybe weeks. You need to shave and can barely remember what your family look like. Turning a corner, you instantly recognise what is to be your salvation. A sign hanging from a wall. It's too far away to read what it says but its character undeniably contains the promise of drink. You regain your composure and make a bee-line directly to the door. You get closer and notice two men outside. They put out their cigarettes and push against the wall of the pub before going in. You're not sure what they did that for. Maybe the natives just have some strange rituals. Not wanting to be culturally insensitive, you think nothing further of it. You get to the front door and stop dead. You think to yourself "this place is not for you." Of course it isn't for you. A week later you wake up and wonder what made you think that. It's not hard to see why. This looks like the least inviting pub in the world. The windows are too high to look into from the outside and no light comes from them. Had you not seen two gentlemen enter earlier, you would assume this pub has long been shut down. The outer door is an imposing metal grating. It's also locked -- the men earlier had identified themselves over an intercom. The rest of the exterior decor is out-of-place; It appears to be a fortress-pub transplanted from the countryside three hundred years ago. Only one thing in life is certain: If you attempt entry to this pub, you will be beaten up. Time passes. Months, even years later, you can't stop thinking about this place. You resolve to come back. You try and find it on a map. What was it called? Where was it? Hours toiling away on Street View finally reveals a name and vital location. The Street View photo depicts a stereotypically unsavoury character entering the pub with a crude wooden weapon slung over his shoulder. If you attempt entry to this pub, you will be beaten up. It's Thursday night; You find yourself standing outside this building but are unable to recall how you got here. It's hurricane season and more than anything else, you want to get indoors and out of the rain. Ring the bell. Nothing happens. Minutes masquerade themselves as eternities. Eventually, a shadowy figure appears on the other side of the door. He wants to know what you are doing here. Some awkward verbal gymnastics reveal this is indeed a pub and it is currently open. You communicate your desire to enter. You learn that since you are unknown to the owner of the pub, you need to pass a short interview. After you have been deemed worthy, you're lead through a corridor and seated at the first-timers table. It is now time to order a drink. The owner is impeccably dressed in a waistcoat and bow-tie. He's very soft-spoken and now that the interview is over, he's unimposing. Perhaps even friendly. There are items hanging from the wall; It's cluttered, but not to the point where it's considered tacky; Just enough to look interesting. Everything is spotless and the tables are hardly sticky at all. The beer is plentiful. It's going to be a long night. You do not get beaten up. read more

The Hacienda is one of my favourite bars in Dublin. It's all a bit secretive and hush hush, uninviting if I'm honest. But once you get in on your first visit, it's easy peasy after that. The whitewash front to the building gives it a continental feel and to me makes me want to see what it's all about inside. But how to get in? Is it even open? If you walk down Arran Street East you will find a gated entrance with an intercom system. Press the button and smile pleasantly is your ticket inside. I assume the security must be needed, but once you are in the welcome is warm. The décor is dated but quirky and the lighting is dark, but all in all the place has a nice atmosphere. If was to pick anything to find fault with it's the toilet cubicles are tight. But at least there are two small loos instead of only one. My first visit was for a storytelling Yelp event, when we met the owner Shay. A character for sure, but very friendly and was happy to talk about the various photographs up on the wall of the celebs who have graced the premises. On our latest visit we popped in for a gander and immediately grabbed the second pool table that was free. For 1 EUR a game, it's good value. We whiled away the a couple of hours playing each other and another punter who put his euro down on the table. I opted for the Guinness and was glad I did. It was a top notch creamy pint. The music was excellent too, a mix of 80s and 90s but not your cheesy pop, but iconic tunes. I look forward to returning. read more

I really wouldn't have ended up here but for a Yelp event (my first ever!). I know the area and I'm not the biggest fan. It's something of a novelty having to be buzzed in by the proprietor but I have to wonder why that is... Complaints and reservations aside, this place was lovely. The inside - all nooks and crannies and large fireplaces - more than makes up for whatever may be lacking outside. It is a world away from the world. I imagine it would be very easy to come in here for a pint and come out sometime three days later - reluctantly at that. There's a pool table and the way the interior is set up, you could have one section that's very boisterous and another that is very quiet and the perfect place to have a five-hour chat with your long-lost friend who you just met at the bar. I highly recommend everyone get dragged here, at least once. It's a very worthwhile experience. This isn't your average Dublin pub. read more

I love this bar more than life itself. There is nothing better than being completely and utterly surprised by what you've stumbled upon. Despite having read all of the previous reviews, nothing could prepare me for the cosy little oasis in the middle of the harsh industrial greyness of Little Mary St. All wood and curios and open fires and a general feeling of home comfort, the Hacienda Bar is 100% my favourite place to drink in Dublin. There are dart tournaments a lot of the week, and a pool table (which covers up into a normal table for events). Shay the owner is of course one of the main draw cards here. Friendly, eccentric, and a bloody good laugh. Prop yourself at the bar if you've no one to buzz with and you'll be having a great aul convo within minutes. It doesn't open til eight on most evenings so I wouldn't bother going along til then. Don't be put off by the buzzer situation. Be brave, it just adds to the intrigue! Ah the Hacienda. A bar which can look so daunting from the outside. Especially since there is no obvious way to enter. Once you get close enough to the gate where there should be a door you will see the buzzers. Ring the buzzer and give the barman some time to finish what he is doing so he can come out and see if you are someone that he would like to have in his bar. Wanting "A few quiet pints" was all it took to pass his interview. He unlocks the gate to usher you in and then locks it afterwards then pockets the key. You could, technically, call it a lock in. The bar wasn't very active the day I went there but the locals seemed friendly and got a smile from my friend's comments about darts and why the game is wrong. Some delicious pints while sitting in "Bullshit Corner" wondering why a diving helmet is on the bar is perfect for relaxing after a day's work. The Hacienda bar eschews common business practice. Generally, bars try to advertise their presence with a large neon sign. The Hacienda, in contrast, has gone for the more subtle option of a very small buzzer beside the gate. Usually, one is also able to walk in and quickly find a seat. Not so the Hacienda. To get into the Hacienda, you have to ring a buzzer, wait til Shay (the owner) finishes pouring a pint, and then ask politely if he'd let you in. "Are ye ok? Just passin' by?" *Awkward silence*... "Can we come in for a pint please?" "Not just passin' by, no?" "No? Pretty please?" said we, with a hint of desperation He let us in in the end, but I haven't sweat that hard in a long long time. And then comes the ordeal of finding a seat. Despite the grillings dished out at the door, the place is always packed, so you have to wriggle your way around to find a table. Once you can finally sit down though, you can see why it gets so many 5*. The atmosphere is great, it's a local pub intermingled with a few outsiders who've stumbled upon the place. 2 pool tables, 2 dart boards, and good cheap pints. But what really makes the place great is that it has lots of character ------ There can be a bit of a queue at the bar, no surprise given that the sole barman is also the doorkeep (he has to let you out too...) ------ Never before have I seen such an effective smoking deterrent as the Hacienda's smoking area. Tucked in a corner of the bar is a 1 square metre red-lit room with 2 doors. Door 1 opens out onto a caged view of Mary street little, perfect for the once-hourly passer by to gawk in at you. Some passersby mistake your small cramped smoking area for a misplaced part of Amsterdam's red Light district, which only ends badly... Door 2 lets you back into the warmth of the bar and offers your only escape from the cold. But both doors open inwards. So, you have a room which can fit at most 4 people, and if you want to leave this place, everyone has to squeeze into 1 small corner of this 1 square metre "room" Despite this, there's a queue to get in there every time I'm there. ------ Thursday nights sees the Ladies Darts club meet-up. Many women come together to play darts, drink Guinness and have the laughs, excellent stuff! read more

So we tried for 8pm and there was no response at the door. After waiting a bit we were joined by Eoin M, who suggested a pint somewhere else and trying again in a bit. We went back closer to 9 and this time got in. The code for whether the place is open is if the inner yellow door is open (the outer iron door remains shut and locked at all times). I'm not sure whether we got in because we arrived at a more suitable time or because we were with Eoin who had been there before. Anyways we did get in... in to an alladin's cave of kitsch and wonderfulness, particularly if you like old stylee brass diving suits. The place is not what you would expect from the difficult entrance - its unpretentious and welcoming. Everything is super clean and the booze is good. The toilets are tiny but again spotless. I'm not sure I can do justice in words to the relaxedness of this place. Its perfect for a pint and chat, and you can expect banter with the barman. You get the impression that this place is like your mates house and the regulars are so chilled. As we left someone mentioned a card game ... its now my ambition to get in on one of these (although if they're really serious about the strip poker, I'll have to go home and put on all the clothes I own first!). So you do have to get let in and let out, although these doesn't really seem to be to keep outsiders out, rather to make sure there's no trouble I think. Can't recommend it enough! read more

I have so much time for this place. A local legend, spurred on by a whispered word of mouth, a history of celebrity visits, and an eccentric owner, 'The Hacienda' is a Yelper's dream. Behind the white stucco walls and Spanish villa inspired roofing stands a quirky, quaint, and slightly queer dimly-lit interior. There are two pool tables surrounded by chalkboards and long benches, which stand perpendicular to the one and only bar area. The beer selection is humble and the decor is poorly lit and fashionably outdated. Upon entry, you will have to ring the intercom bell. Shay, the owner, will give you a gander and decide whether you are fit to enter. I hear that pinstripe suits and bad behavior will unfortunately get you turned away. There are no set hours, which means when the proprietor heads to bed, you will too. It also means you can't always expect it to be open at any given time. What a lad. I wish anyone who wants to find this place without a google mapping session first the best of good luck. For if I hadn't trusted Yelp's guidance to this chilled hangout, I would have never found it. Literally, I could have wandered the streets of Dublin for the rest of my life and never known what a relaxed, watering hole lies behind the unassuming exterior. The Hacienda is so great. As plenty of people have mentioned it's a bit unusual in that you have to ring the doorbell to get in and even before that, you have to walk down what looks like a fairly dodgey, quiet, lowly lit street to get to it but it's totally worth it. It's sort of like 3 sitting rooms stuck together with a bar in one of the rooms. There are pool tables and darts. Its's really cosy though. At the weekends it gets pretty packed but you'll usually find a seat somewhere. Some week nights can be pretty quiet but that is pretty nice because the pool table might be free and you can chat to Shay, the wonderful owner. The smoking area is hilarious. It's about the size of a toilet cublicle. It's very entertaining to watch people squeeze in and out. read more

Dios Mio. Find it! Celebrate it! Break a bottle of champagne against its starboard side - this is my new favourite place this side of the Atlantic. We went for the ostensible "one pint" on a Saturday night coming up to Christmas in the hopes of getting a seat and having a cozy chat, an impossibility in most places considering how crazy Dublin gets this time of year. La Hacienda delivered, and there was no dragging ourselves away after our first (Excellent) pints of Guinness were drained. There's almost a sense of community in this bar and you can easily get chatting with the other punters, all of whom seem stoked to be there. I can't wait to go back! read more

But after ringing the bell on the jailhouse front it seemed judging a book by its cover would've been my best option because of the cold ignorant man who came to the door to refuse us, who turned out to be shay, the owner of the bar. You walk down a seemingly barren street. The Dublin wind bites at you from behind, and whistles between the houses. You keep walking and notice a squat white brick building. There's a hum coming from inside, but from the outside it's dark. You begin to wonder if you're in the right place. This uninviting street hardly seems the place for a 'Hacienda' of any kind! You ring the bell outside, wondering if you've just woken up a family in their home late at night. A man with a bohemian waistcoat, whitish curly hair and a quizzical look opens the door, studies you, then quietly ushers you in. Coming through the doorway you realise you're finally there... the rumours were true! The Hacienda is a brilliant pub, hidden away on the north side and just off Capel Street. It is truly one of Dublin's little treasures. A great place to stop off for a few drinks in a friendly environment. With its two pool tables it's also a place to play a game with some strangers perhaps. As a novelty it also has the smallest smoking area I've ever seen and always seems to be belting out motown tunes! This place oozes charm and style. Maybe part of its attraction is its unassuming character, it's location on a seemingly dead street, and the fact that coming to the Hacienda is an 'insider's' or 'local's' game. Possibly the coolest bar in Dublin. It's so cool it's almost mythical. I heard an urban legend about this place long before I ever found it. Ring the doorbell to get let in. I'd even tried a few times with no success. When I finally did though it was fantastic, a really unusual place. There's pool and darts, a decent pint, good atmosphere and the best 80s playlist. This was such a cute little hidden away gem of a place. I will admit, when first walking up I was a bit skeptical, as it was at night, there was nothing else around, and the area looked a bit sketchy. We buzzed in to enter the bar, and the bartender came and greeted us into the building. It was 7pm on a thursday, and there was not many people there (at least at first) except for the people there for our event. I abosolute LOVED the way the inside was set up. It was so cozy, and the fireplace was lovely. There was a pool table in one of the rooms just off the main bar area. The bartender was hilarious, and I got quite a kick out of him. He was a quirky, but funny and nice older man. I mentioned I wanted to drink Cider, as I'm not much of a beer person. He recommend that I try the Stella Cider instead of the Bulmers, as I had never tried it before. I'm glad he suggested it, as it was actually much less acidic than Bulmer's cider. All and all, despite the fact it looks kind of iffy from out the outside at night, it was a really nice place! I will definitely go to this bar again the next time in that part of town! read more

Amazing atmosphere! I was told about this place and was told that it's not like any other bar in Dublin and I can confirm that is absolutely true. Quite quirky as you wouldn't have a clue it's there. This is a good thing because there aren't hoards of rowdy people coming in. After hearing so much about this 'cool' bar I have to admit that I was very disappointed. While the proprietor obviously plays up this whole quirky exclusive vibe, the opposite is actually the case when you eventually get in.After being 'allowed' in my friend and I intended having a few drinks. However, we found the place to be so bland and even a little smelly. The toilets were filthy the Guinness was more than a little off and the whole place could do with a proper steam cleaning. Needless to say we did not feel comfortable staying for subsequent drinks. I'm delighted to say I have learned a few lessons.
