Had a free rabies clinic that I took my dog to. People there were friendly and it was a real quick process.

In general, it is an incredible space for the community to get together and/or enjoy works for local artists across the floors of the building. They host events like the Spring Market to attract more visitors, so it can get quite busy during those times, with lines for places like Machine Shop wrapping around the building.

I visited the BOK Building this past Saturday when we were visiting Philly, and it was everything I…read morewas expecting! So what is it? The BOK Building is a former vocational high school. It closed in 2013, and the city put the building up for auction. Most of the time, developers will tear a building like this down, to build something that has no history, no character, and looks like every other new multi-use build. But every once in a while a developer does something special. And the developer who bought the BOK Building did just that. The design firm that won the contract to renovate the BOK had incredible vision - to maintain the integrity and history of the structure while updating it for new and modern uses. So the outside still looks like a historic high school (it was built in 1936). And the inside does, too! They kept so many touches that make it clear that it was a high school. (It's hard to explain; you'll understand when you see it for yourself!) So the space is amazing. But it's also home to some amazing shops and businesses (plant, ceramic, bike stores and more), cafes (a coffeeshop, a bakery), a restaurant (Irwin's), and a rooftop bar! Like many other places/neighborhoods in Philly, parking in the area around the BOK Building can be tough. And not every entrance to the building is a public entrance (their website has information about the entrances and signs outside were helpful, but it is a little bit confusing). The building is really cool; I really respect their approach to the space, its architecture and its history. Visit, explore, eat, drink, and shop!

If people are complaining about how it's not open long enough, it's because they have a very limited budget every year. I think that they do a wonderful job with what they have. For me, it's also one of the cleanest pools in the city. Two thumbs up to the Shawn and the staff for running such a great place for adults and kids to cool off in the summer months. I haven't tried any of their other programming, but it is a real stronghold in the community.

I'll admit: I wasn't expecting the pool to be so clean! There were some leaves on the bottom, but…read morethe water itself was crystal clear. In fact, this being my first time at a public pool, I was pleasantly surprised all-around: Lifeguards were attentive, crowd was friendly, and this pool is just MASSIVE! But there are a few differences between this public pool and a typical swim club that are helpful to know beforehand: This is not a lush environment. Anyone not swimming needs to sit on concrete, bleacher-like steps behind a chain-link fence that separates the pool from the spectator area. The steps are mere feet from the edge of the pool, but I'd imagine the separation might be a little disconcerting for parents of younger kids (or just a buzzkill for anyone hoping to interact with people in the water). Bags, towels, and personal items have to stay on the steps, too, so I advise against bringing any valuables if you plan to swim, as you'll have to leave them unattended (in sight, but behind the chain-link fence). Finally, anyone entering the swim area needs to walk through a sprinkler/shower that rinses people off before they get in the water. So if you're bringing your kids and plan to walk them to the edge of the pool, prepare to get doused on your way in and out! All that said, it's a city pool. No frills, but a great place to play in the water on a hot summer day, at zero cost!
