I have been going to the Mazzoni center since 2013. The doctors and caregivers are fantastic people and I have gotten the meds and care I need.... but the standard of their care has gone so far downhill in just the last few years. It takes months to schedule an appointment. Weeks to get a refill authorized. Months to get a response from their patient portal. Their phone system is a complete joke- trying to reach the front desk during their alleged business hours takes you to a recording that hangs up on you. Trying to use the dial-by-name directory leads to dead ends that also hang up on you without even giving you a chance to leave a message. Basically, only go here if you are desperate and have no other option. I am going to try and find another doctor who is LGBT friendly, because my time is more valuable than this! read more

They dare to call themselves LGBTQIA focused yet they were the source of causing me additional health problems than I started out with prior to going there and it's not just limited to their health center! Apart from the traumatizing physical damages I am suffering with due to their careless mistakes of misdiagnosis and referral to a harmful place, the legal department made a huge mistake by allowing the court to publicize my name change on their site which in turn ended up in other public records sites when I was told the publication was going to be completely waived from everywhere. Even though other name change clients private information is also public, they're just 'protecting' the CURRENT clients privacy AFTER my countless complaints. They don't bother fixing their big mistake but continue to take on clients like nothing happened to the vulnerable. read more

There seems to be a pass the buck attitude, I had labs drawn that they forgot to refrigerate so they were useless, it is almost impossible to get through them and the online portal sucks. I have been going to the Mazzoni center for years (since 2016); however, over time, I have experienced numerous changes within the organization ranging from staff changes to doctor changes to setting up an appointment (they used to have an online calendar where you could see your doctor's availability, now they don't). The doctors are caring, up to a point. It's like you have to be your own doctor when they ask you to certain questions about your body and how you are feeling, etc. Your appointment with your doctor is only 30 minutes and that is not enough time to tell them exactly what's going on within your body or to ask deeper questions. You are out at exactly in a half an hour. Also, they keep changing the way how things are doing: one day they do the blood work, the next, you have to locate a clinic that does blood work for them, then they are back to doing blood work themselves. Once I had to have my mouth swapped, the doctor did it; the next, you are shuffled to the bathroom and perform the procedure yourself. Yes, they do have illustrated directions posted inside the bathroom walls; I was shocked to see you had to perform your own anal swapping, not them. The Mazzoni does not perform any real physical checkups: Checking your thyroids, listening to your heart and lungs, etc. Another thing they need to work on is Phone etiquette skills and returning emails promptly. Phone calls are not taking in a professional manner, when there's a question, it should be met with a professional tone, pauses in between indicates a lack of knowledge or they don't care. As for the emails: No one should have to wait 5 business days for an answer. It should be returned within one to two business days. Do the doctor's check the emails as well? I doubt it. Lastly, I feel this is a must, your doctor, should be available to you at all times (well not all the time) if you have any questions or concerns about something you are going through or questions about your medication, they should be there. I am starting to look elsewhere, closer to home as traveling to Philly by septais a real chore. read more

Let me preface this by saying that I love the Mazzoni center and love my PCP. That being said, since this move, the care has been ridiculously sub-par. I had an appointment scheduled for this Friday and it was conveniently cancelled and reschedule for AUGUST 11th!!! This comes on the heels of my fiancé, who sees the same PCP, not being able to get an appointment for an urgent matter until August 28th!! This is absolutely uncalled for -- if our PCP is booked that far, then stop booking her! Existing patients need to be able to see their PCP in a more timely matter. This is so absurd. Let's not mention the fact that I was hung up on while RESCHEDULING my appointment and that my fiancé also faced rude and incompetent front-desk staff. If this continues, I'll consider seeing treatment elsewhere. read more

If you'd asked me last year, this would have been 4 or 5 stars. In the last three months, Mazzoni has become one of the worst providers. The only reason why they got 2 was because that staff that remains there is caring and professional. Those who remain... They seem to have lost many of their doctors and staff. The place is empty most of the time. It takes 5 months to see my new doctor and two weeks to do a STI test! Two weeks?? Whoever is running this place should be fired and blacklisted from running a similar place in the future. I'm resigned to getting my primary care at an Urgent Clinic until I find a new provider. read more

I have a recurring problem with my medical prescriptions and refills being inaccurate at the Walgreens at Mazzoni. I get conflicting stories about where the problem is, with Walgreens or Mazzoni. If I raise the issue with Mazzoni, they tell me the screw-up was at Walgreens and vice versa. Currently, I have a prescription that was filled in a greater quantity than what I specifically ordered. I have medication that I paid for but won't be able to use because it will expire before I can use it all. This is medicine, not a screwed-up Amazon order. I suggest to Mazzoni patients that you insist on inspecting your prescriptions on the spot and confirming that everything is in order. Thankfully, my medication wasn't something like insulin, or cancer medication. read more

I feel so comfortable with the Mazzoni Center. I, and many others, am incredibly lucky and grateful that these services exist. Going through all sorts of life challenges can be painful and frightening when you know you're assumed to be a certain way. Here, there are no assumptions. They know who they're working with, and they are sensitive without the need to pry for information. If you're in need of gynecology and you're not a woman, for example, they know exactly how to handle your needs while prioritizing respect for your identity. My biggest concern is the physical space in which the Mazzoni Center clinic exists. I feel sort of exposed in the waiting room. I hope that they someday have the funds to upgrade to a larger, more private space. If you visit during youth drop-in hours rather than making an appointment, you will probably wait a very long time to see someone. This is completely understandable, in my opinion. They'll advise you regarding what time you should show up if you call. Occasionally, I've noticed lapses in communication; I have been kept waiting in the exam room before with no one around and no idea how much longer I would have to wait. This is not a common issue, and I find that, overall, I receive more attentive service here than at any other clinic I've visited. Be aware that the doctor you want to speak with may not always be available over the phone. Don't be afraid to leave messages with reception. You'll always receive quick assistance. read more

Mazzoni Clinic was founded by a doctor whose mission was to serve the LGBTQ community in light of the AIDS epidemic and how expensive care had become. In addition to their stated mission, Mazzoni serves the entire community. A friend recommended I check them out when I'd become fed up with the rude and uncaring service at Planned Parenthood (I was without insurance for many, many years) and I began coming here for reproductive health and birth control. Everyone from the front desk reception to your clinician (you can request a man or woman if you have a preference) treats you with the utmost respect. No matter what is wrong, you can talk to them about it and they won't judge or make you feel stupid. Even the most embarrassing problems are treated with intelligence and professional interest. The prescription-refill phone program is glitchy; there has been more than one occasion where I've called several times to no avail. This can be frustrating, since birth control is a time-sensitive thing, but once you actually stop in and talk to the front desk they get things moving asap. If you don't make much money and have no insurance, Mazzoni provides a sliding fee scale. Bring your tax return or a pay stub to be fee-assessed. Thank you, everyone at Mazzoni, for fighting the good fight in our for-profit, corporate, insurance-controlled medical system. You are truly making a difference and it means SO much. read more

Let me preface this update with the comment that the medical staff here is absolutely amazing. They are everything you could hope for in an empathetic, competent provider. That being said... My partner had an appointment which he had to wait about a month for (not that bad since some places take several months), but had problems getting to the clinic. Happened to be a particularly rainy day and he was given the wrong address (the old location on 12th & Chestnut), so naturally he tried to call and let them know he'd be a little late and for directions. The man on the phone said he couldn't notify the doctor he was going to be late unless he knew which doctor. My partner didn't know who since he keeps getting rotated between people and he doesn't come in too often. He asked if they could look it up and they hung up on him. He wasn't even able to get directions. He finally figured out where they were located after calling me at work, found parking on 13th street, and when he showed up, albeit late, he was told they "gave" his appointment away. He did everything possible to make his appointment and let the staff know what was going on and they all but threw him out into the rain. Of course, I called them infuriated and, for their credit, the administrative supervisor called my partner back (they couldn't call me apparently since they didn't have a disclosure form for me) and assured him they would rectify the situation. My partner did get another appointment scheduled and they made sure he was treated well, but for me this is all too indicative of the level of control they have over their clerical staff. I think my partner's absolutely crazy to continue going here, but he still thinks the medical staff is worth it. I think the medical staff is great, but I couldn't disagree more. No one is worth the treatment you receive from the clerical staff. What's the point of having the best medical providers around if you can't get to them? read more

The main offices of The Mazzoni Center (everything but their medical offices) moved to this address about a year ago. At this location individuals can visit their case workers and the food bank. It is also the location for most of their administrative employees. The service with which I have experience, however, is their counseling program. I have been seeing a therapist through Mazzoni for nearly two years. Unlike their medical services, which are on a sliding scale and can even be totally free, theraputic services must be paid for out of pocket or by insurance. (Luckily they do take public insurance.) Additionally, you MUST identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans gendered or questioning in order get mental health services here. The medical offices see anyone because they receive funding from the Federal government; the counseling offices do not. I have found therapy here to be very rewarding, but of course successful therapy relies on finding a good therapist. What's great is they have counselors who specialize in things like addiction, eating disorders and trans counseling, all of which are prominent issues in the GLBTQ community. Also, knowing that your sexuality is a non-issue can be very comforting to those who really need help. I would advise anyone who is considering it to check into the mental health services at Mazzoni. Know, though, that there can often be a waiting list to begin seeing a therapist. I waited two months... read more

I have been going to the Mazzoni Center since 2002. At the time they were in the beginning stages of offering services for Trans patients. I was in awe with their mission and purpose so much so that I left my employer of 3 years to work for them. I later relocated to New York City to continue the same work this time at Callen Lorde. I returned to Philadelphia in 2007 and knew that I wanted to return to The Mazzoni Center for services, this time things had changed. Now part of Jefferson University Hospital the attention to detail was not the same. Perhaps this is a result of now having gotten larger but it seems that I am always having to follow up with them for anything and everything or else it won't get done. It is most frustrating when you are told that something has been done when in fact it hasn't and now you have to call them back, wait on hold, recant your story and request, yet again for the task to be done. This is especially the case when it comes to requesting a RX to be called to your Pharmacy. Emailing is a waste of time as well. I am really so over it! I continue to support their mission because I believe in what their doing and I love my Doctor however they really need to get it together. read more

This used to be the best medical center in the world but over the past year it has gone to hell. All the good staff has left. The bottom of the barrel that is left behind is guilty of everything from insurance fraud and billing for times they did not see you to purposely altering your treatment plan to make you less functional. Shout out to Becky Altman! She is the best PCP I've ever had. This place rocks: it's everything you could want in a PCP. My NP takes a lot of time to hear what's going on with me personally as well as lets me ask a ton of questions. Because of her care, she has figured out lurking issues and also collaboratively developed some really effective treatment plans with me. Also, Becky is knowledgeable about insurance (surprisingly rare for PCPs), which has helped my wallet a lot. The administrative staff and infrastructure are also really good and thoughtful. Mazzoni's online platform is great, and the team is highly responsive. I also love the way you get called into your check-up room once you're there. The buzzing disc system (like what restaurants use) helps protect people's privacy. Finally, the clinic is such an inclusive environment. I appreciate that they have their values hung on the wall of the center. The only things I wish Mazzoni had were more appointments (maybe on the weekend?) available and an answering service so you could call and make appointments outside of when staff are taking calls at the clinic. In short, everything about this place is caring and helpful. My PCP has gone above and beyond. P.S. they were great in helping me navigate insurance, too! read more

Update #3: Mazzoni's care quality has gone back up a lot since the summer ended, so I feel better about recommending this place again. There can be long waits, both on the phone and in the office, but that is less frequent now. As always, enough good things can never be said about Dr. Nancy Brisbon. She is compassionate, kind, and is genuinely interested in helping her patients. Note to avoid: The new (and very attractive) Asian [sorry for being racially insensitive, but I'm not sure what her ethnicity is and I'm not sure how else to describe her] girl at the reception desk is cold-hearted and indifferent. The rest of the reception staff are very kind, but steer clear of this young lady who ought to reconsider being in a health clinic and try something that needs no compassion, like accounting. read more

I have to say that I found this place deplorable...from the way the staff treats you to the way they never call you back to the fact that you can't even get a simple prescription filled. I am glad I left this place for good. I switched to Penn and the care there is much better. Furthermore if you sincerely value your health don't go here - period. So I've been going to mazzoni for several years. First, the positives. The medical staff is phenomenal. They are clearly the heart of the operation, and do everything to make you feel comfortable and welcome. This is a huge win, especially when they're targeting lgbtq folks like myself. Downside: billing and support staff. It's gone up and down over the years, but never have I consistently been billed correctly. The check out staff often asks for the wrong copay for the service (ie any copay for a free wellness visit, no copay for labs, etc). Currently, we're trying to get mazzoni and jefferson to sort out all the billing from my wife's recent visit, all because they're submitting incorrect diagnosis or reason codes. And it's not like we have a small no name insurance plan that they're not familiar with. We're having a rough time even getting staff to return our messages through the portal about the bills and still pending test results that we're told would take 3 hours to be sent over. So overall, medical staff is great, and I go because they take a holistic approach to health. But billing and support staff is inconsistent at best, incompetent at worst. I'm lucky enough to work in insurance and be quite savvy, but this could be a deal breaker for a lot of folks who don't know their plans, and get stuck paying for services that are covered. So if they fully want to have that patient centered medical home type feel, they need to get their books in order and get a handle on billing, office staff (wait room can be a nightmare, no clear sign in sheet, office staff hidden from view so they don't even see you come in), and all the other day to day persons read more

Hmmm - it's hard to review a doctor's office. It's not like we can compare the taste of minted tongue depressors or the warmth of the doc's exam fingers. Well, we could, let's try. Things I love: Doctors and nursing staff are great. Nurses drawing blood are great. Counseling staff is great. Lots of greatness. Rooms are comfy and magazine selections does not suck. noise generators in each room to keep conversations quiet are also great. Things I do not love: I show up early and still am taken back late. Annoying. No clear check in area when you walk in, windows at counter are closed so you wander around looking lost if you don't knock to get someone's attention. Online portal service SUCKS. I have NEVER received a response to an appointment request generated here or a question asked here. It's useless and I ignore it. In short, the staff and care levels are really exceptional. The implementation and business portion, as with many doctor's offices, leaves a lot to be desired. read more

I really feel like the level of care I receive here is far above-and-beyond the normal doctor's office. They specialize in LGBT healthcare, but anyone can go here. As a student, they see me for only $20. The price is great alone, but the difference here is that everyone receives the highest level of care no matter what they pay, and that impresses me. Everyone has been polite that I have dealt with. One request: Get an online appointment system for returning clients. Reaching anyone on the phone is nearly impossible! Getting an appointment is impossible. I've been without hormones for like a month and can't get in, no one returns my messages in the patient portal. When I did have an appointment scheduled the Nurse Practitioner I was supposed to see canceled. I was seeing Doctor Fellows, who was awesome, but he left as most of the good folks there have. The current guy I'm stuck with was very stand offish the whole appointment the last time I was in, almost judgey of everything I said. I've been on hormones fro years. Never had a problem. It's usually a quick "yeah everything has been fine", quick exam, blood draw go home. It felt almost like an interrogation. I want to change my provider, without being a dick about it, but that would require actually getting a hold of someone, either through patient portal or on the phone. My experience with this place has been generally very bad and revolved around transgender healthcare. -Almost had to postpone my top surgery and lose a $500 deposit because they had not sent over my physical to my surgeon, despite me calling multiple times, telling them in person on multiple occasions and providing them with the address/fax/phone number every time. -Vast majority of times they put my birthname on their check-in roster at the front desk. This means when I checked in I had to be identified by my birthname, despite me providing them with my preferred name on my first visit and telling them EVERY SINGLE TIME I went back. This happened for over two years. Even after I got a legal name change and provided them with documentation this still happened for a year. Unacceptable if you say you're a trans-friendly health care provider. -People messed up my pronouns regularly. -I went in and mentioned I had a wart on my hand - the Nurse Practioner Dane said, and I quote, "Ok so it's only on your hand right? Because I can't deal with it being anywhere like on your genitals today, that is really disgusting and hard for me to look at." Well...turns out I don't but if I did have genital warts I sure as hell wouldn't be getting it treated that visit or potentially ever in the future! Highly unprofessional. I was shocked. -hung up on multiple occasions when I've been waiting to make an appointment over the phone, usually I wouldn't mind but when you're already been on hold for 20 minutes.... They are really great with social services - if you want a letter for surgery, lost cost hormones, low-cost legal name change or just a piece of paper from a physician to get your gender marker on your ID changed. They give these things without a hassle and in a financially accessible way and that is GREAT for trans people (can't be emphasized enough). And if you don't have a dollar to your name this is where to go for basic services that's more trans friendly than the free clinics. read more

I'm only giving it any stars because the doctors are good. The main problem is the administration staff (the front desk people), to some it all up....THESE PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING. My bf had a few complications with his health and now sees a specialist. However, these specialist would need information with this place being his primary care facility. The specialist would not get that information until days later. These people do not know how to properly fill out a referral. When you bring it to their attention, its attitude and drama. I'm glad he's going somewhere else with a more competent staff. They have even messed my prescriptions up too many times as well. read more

It's a shame seeing negative reviews on here for the Mazzoni Center. I have been going to Mazzoni for over 5 years now and have never had a negative experience that I wouldn't have had at another doctor's office. People need to realize that Mazzoni is a major resource for LGBT clients not only in the city, but southeastern PA, South Jersey, and Delaware. People come from all over, especially for trans-related health issues because Mazzoni Center is capable of providing service. That being said, they are very overtaxed with the amount of patients calling and needed appointments. Sure, they have forgotten to send something for me on occasion, or I've had to wait 30 minutes past my appointment time to get called back (just looking at other reviews on here), but in the end everything I needed was taken care of. People on here need to look past the few poor experiences they've had and look at all the good Mazzoni does for the city, especially with HIV/AIDS awareness. When I began going there, I had just graduated college, I had a minimum wage part time job and no insurance. The people there made sure I was taken care of and did not turn me away. I could not afford a medication that I needed and a generic version was not offered in the US at the time. I was assigned a case worker who helped me fill out paperwork to receive the medication for free through the state. They also provided me with free samples until I received the medication in the mail. There have also been many times where I called due to being sick and needing to see a doctor immediately. The insurance I have through work is an HMO, and since I listed Mazzoni as my primary healthcare provider, I can only go there. Whenever I have called to request an immediate appointment they have almost always managed to fit me in that day or the following. The people there will do anything to help their patients, and they treat everyone with respect and kindness, which is something I have always wanted from a doctor's office. read more

Cherie Older took a personal vendetta to make sure I could never come back because I expressed my rights as an American and told her that i didn't like her and they refused to give me a new therapist. What a half ass clinic. Been there a few times, in the distant past it was OK but for the long waits. Lately they have been very sloppy and have sometimes given me poor treatment. Any referral is often forgotten or late. They do not take responsibility for their failings. One time I went in with a rash, the doc looked at it and left the room. The nurse came back and told me to leave. I assumed to wait in the waiting room for them to decide something but no, they were done without any comment! I went back weeks later and talked to management, they promised to look into it and call me. No call. Months later I went in with a sore muscle and was in so much pain the doc prescribed pain pills and said they would send me to Physical Therapy pronto. Almost a week later of worse pain I had to nag them to do the referral and despite requesting one close by my house they chose the farthest one available. Now I found out the idiots sent the referral to the wrong fax number so that held things up even more than their basic incompetence did. read more

I've been a Mazzoni patient for a long time, almost 10 years. Today, from the moment I arrived, I was treated with total respect. I didn't wait forever in the waiting room, which was good because I know Mazzoni has grown a lot in the past few years so I wasn't sure if I'd have to wait a long time. The woman who checked me to the room was no nonsense--temperature, weight, blood pressure, done. I wasn't told to undress or asked to wear weird paper clothes. The provider I saw, who was new, listened to me and we talked for a while before there was ever an exam, so by the time he examined me-- which he asked first if it was ok!-- I was totally comfortable. I have always been a fan of the Mazzoni Center, and would have given it a full 5 stars if it not been for my extremely negative experience with Nurse Practitioner Dane. He was completely unprofessional, seemed aggravated and arrogant, and did not do a thorough job on trying to get to the bottom of my problem. He was dismissive and very rude when I called back a week after my appointment because my symptoms were not getting any better, and I will make it a point to never meet with him again. He brushed off my symptoms on something which turns out was completely unrelated and seemed like he was rushing me out the door. I had to stop him from leaving and ask him to check my chest- when a pain in my chest was the reason I was there for the appointment. To be honest he seemed like he was more interested in being the cool guy than doing a thorough, thoughtful job. That being said, everyone else I've ever seen at Mazzoni over the past few years has been excellent. I'm uninsured and (aside from my experience with Dane) have always received excellent care at very fair prices. I'm not usually one to write a Yelp review, but I thought it was important this time- I'd hate for someone's first impression of Mazzoni to be a negative experience with Dane.
