Thanks to Dr Fukano and his staff, I have "graduated" from needing a valium and laughing gas to just laughing gas to be able to sit through a cleaning, cavity fill, what have you. Maybe it's the environment of being put at ease the staff has created, maybe it's because they know your name when you walk in, ask after your dog by name and come out to the car to visit her (while she gives kisses to them) even if it's been months since they've seen you last ... Could be due to how well they do what they do and explain what's going on, show you the cavity, etc ... Maybe it's how they create a sense of knowing that they do care and are there to take care of you in the best manner possible. For whatever reason... On my last exam my hygienist, Rebecca recommended that I get a night guard as I have been grinding my teeth which has required restorative work. I was putting off having the night guard made as I have anxiety when it comes to impressions. I entered the office and was greeted by Jen, at the front desk. I waited a few minutes when Althea (dental assistant) lead me back to the room where the impressions were going to be done. She explained to me what she was going to be doing and how long it would take for the procedure. It only took her a few minutes to do my impressions. My husband went here with a severe toothache. The tooth was extracted, and the dentist performed a…read morebone graft for a future implant. No antibiotics were prescribed because the dentist claimed there was no significant infection. We later went to a specialist in Tacoma for an implant evaluation, only to discover the entire extraction site was severely infected. The Tacoma specialist had to perform a deep cleaning, and we were informed the probability of a successful implant is now very low due to how this was handled. Communication from the Sequim office has been terrible. I called twice and was promised a callback, which never happened. After sending a strong email, the dentist finally called, claimed everything was done properly, pointed out that there was actually another tooth that was infected and promised a follow-up email. That email never arrived. In the end, we deeply regret our decision to trust this office with his care. After thinking about this situation I realized that the dentist didn't offer refund. Will actually follow up with insurance about this.

Then, the crown had too much cement crammed under the gum line, another dentist had to fix it. Then, they mis- quoted me on insurance costs. Now, in 2025, I have a bone infection under the root canal, liquified bone, horrible pain & a ton of money to fix. I also have to wait 8-10 months to see if the bone will regenerate, or I have to have surgery. Why? Because this unqualified dentist missed a branch of the root, left it in, and it got infected. Stay away from this practice. Everyone in it is below par, from the dentist to the insurance staff!

And dentists terrify me. Enough about me, Dr. Fordham's office was filled with angels of mercy who found me a spot on the schedule within the hour. They were kind, understanding and listened to all my "wah wah wah" without judgment. I was certain that they were just covering for the terrible dentist who was threatening them (because really ... all dentists are scary, right?) BUT NO! Dr. Fordham was awesome. Did I mention that he was awesome? Furthermore, he didn't judge me either. For not going to the dentist more often. Which is going to change, because he's awesome. His treatment plan didn't include ripping out teeth or root canals or chaining me to rocks for monsters to eat me either. He gently, clearly and in real language explained to me that I needed to follow through with the peridontal plan... and if I did, I'd probably live. And if I do (and I probably will) I have a new dentist.

Trying to act like shots of any kind don't freak me out. Add to that, that my mouth doesn't always seem to respond to the freezing the way it should. So, more often than not, I am not 100% frozen which ends up being quite painful and embarrassing. I recently returned to Victoria and had walked by Dr Pite's office quite frequently while walking my dog. Once I passed when the staff was coming back from lunch. They were laughing and seems happy, like they enjoyed their work and each other. I went home and checked them out on that MD rating site. Really good reviews. A couple days later, I was walking past with my husband and I said, Let's go here. We went in and made an appointment for a cleaning and check up. We filled out questionnaires and although I was a little nervous, it was only a cleaning. I am very good with hygiene and was hoping there would be no need for drilling or shots etc. Two weeks later, around a week before our cleaning, I bit into a wintergreen lifesaver and broke off my tooth! Panic. We called the office, but they are closed on Friday. We left a message on his cell. Keep in mind we were soon to be new patients, had never met him personally. Well, he called back and came in to the office to see me that afternoon, and filed down the sharp bits so I would be comfortable. He was very kind. The next week he was able to prepare my tooth for a crown. And I was very, very impressed. Like crazy impressed. He knew that I'd had bad experiences, he explained everything he was going to do, he jiggled my cheek for the shot and so it barely hurt and put the medicine in slowly so again it wouldn't be as uncomfortable. He checked with cold to make sure it was frozen, because I could still feel he gave me another jiggly shot, this one I almost didn't feel. He didn't start until my tooth was totally, totally numb. He offered me music which was a great idea and I was able to focus on that instead of all the drilling and noise. And it didn't hurt at all. Another first. It was the best dental experience of my life. I am 55 and for the first time, I don't feel afraid to go to my dentist and I'm real glad because he is young and that means I'll probably be dead by the time he retires and so I won't ever have to be scared again. If there was a ten star thing I could click on I would do that. Was the most stress free dentist visit I have ever had.

Dr Pite and the staff were caring and I can't say anything bad about the overall service, but in the end, the success of the procedure is what matters. So I just want to make future patients aware that for this specific type of surgery that is a gum graft, I would recommend to see a periodontist who has more experience with this type of procedure.
