Well, my bad - their website includes multiple accessible places to park in and around the village. That said, we got it, and decided to belly up to the bar for a better look at the offerings and the place in general. Matt O was our server. I started with a delicious Scottish Ale, and my companion had a glass of wine. Prices are reasonable. My companion ordered and raved about the Shepherd's Pie. I had Bangers & Mash - sausage (3 pieces) with imported horseradish mustard, mashed potatoes, gravy, delicious baked beans. It went perfectly with my pint! It was a warm afternoon so the glass garage doors were opened wide and folks were eating and drinking outside in the beer garden too. The vibe was loud, lively and very positive. Music was old school British Invasion '60s style. Good times seemed to be had by everyone. We finished with a locally produced Chocolate Rum Cake - it was rum forward and smooth, dark chocolatey! As a result, the entire restaurant felt quite cold throughout our meal. Since we were dining with our infant son, this made it difficult to fully enjoy the experience and was our biggest disappointment of the evening. In fact, it was cold enough that we kept our coats on throughout dinner, which made it hard to relax and enjoy the atmosphere the restaurant had worked so hard to create. We also ordered the fish and chips. The quality of the fish was very good, and it was clearly prepared with care. However, the portion size left something to be desired. The meal included only one medium-sized piece of fish, which felt small for a dinner entrée, especially considering the price point. While the food itself was enjoyable, we were hoping for a more substantial serving. Despite these issues, The Last Queen delivered on atmosphere, authenticity, and food quality. The kind of place with a few locals sitting at a booth having their morning coffee, one of the waitresses offering Jim the last donut because they know he will want it. He accepts it. This is, in my mind, a classic American small town diner. The kind of place I grew up, eating in my hometown of 500 people. It's not high cuisine, there's nothing fancy about the food although I did come across a few things I had never seen before on the menu. Fried mush. Meat grits specials, like the scuttle butt and the chili Bob. An age old, but perfected recipe of eggs, meat, cheese, and a starch either potatoes ( homefries) or toast. The coffee is weak and not much flavor to it but, to be honest, it's exactly what you would expect in a place like this and there's something comforting about that. Honest, simple food made day and a day out, catering to the local crowd and a few roadway, travelers like myself who happen to come across it. There's a certain charm and depth to places like this that have been lived in day and day out by the same people for decades. For those like up rounded, there's the nostalgia and connection to the many other people having the same experience day after day in communities across the United States. Forgive me if I wax nostalgia can get a little sentimental here, but this morning's dining experience definitely elicited that for me. At the western edge of Ohio is the town of Greenville, home to the Green Wave, an awesome consignment store, and one of the most delightful restaurants I've ever been to - Jack's Cabin. Co-owned by Jeremy (J) and Carisa (C), and staffed by their son Austin (A) and Kaylie (K), this is the quintessential family restaurant. I enjoyed their corned beef and eggs, amazing fried flounder and cod - and before heading out from my two day respite in Greenville - their Philly Cheesesteak Skillet. Every dish was a hit, hot, and the perfect comfort foods were one to camp indoors. And like a true family restaurant, I felt fair prices all around, such that I kept coming back and tipping in turn instead! Alongside the black bears that peek all around the room, each table also has a personalized figurine featuring camping awesomeness like fishing, wildlife, and just a general vibe of nature. And apparently order nothing grilled, because it will get fried, too. The wait staff was brand new and was having some trouble figuring out our order. There didn't seem to be any shadowing or training happening. It took a long time for our main dishes to arrive.
