I'm so sad to write this because I have always considered Hagerty to be the best when it comes to classic auto insurance. However once I actually had an issue, they quickly showed me how customer serviced orientated they are. My 1969 (completely restored) Dodge Charger fuel filter clogged and I needed a tow truck. I called 1-888-310-8020 (the Hagerty hotline) to request a tow truck. The operator explained it would be an hour wait. I explained to the operator the situation "I am a young woman, alone on the corner of a VERY busy intersection. I am scared and really hope it won't be a full hour" I made several attempts at calling Hagerty and received several calls of "we are trying to help" etc. Now, maybe you are thinking "I'm sure she was in a remote area" - nope, I broke down in a very populated city in San Diego. Long story short, my car and I waited almost 3 hours on the side of the road before a tow truck finally arrived! For almost $800 a year, I expect my car (and myself) to be treated with some dignity. As their website says "People trust us with their most prized possessions because we get it" - I don't think they don't get it at all. Being a rational person, I realize things can happen and tow trucks can take time but 3 hours is unacceptable. Then, as the tow truck arrives, someone calls from Hagerty calls saying they are with management and would like to discuss my experience. As calmly as I can, while the tow truck driver is asking where he can hook up the straps, I say "I am extremely heated and would appreciate you calling me tomorrow" 6 days later after I patiently waited for a call from Hagerty, I got NOTHING. So much for the "outstanding service" their website claims. Still very upset by my 3 hours on the side of a busy intersection with tons of creeps trying to "assist me" I sent an email to Hagerty explaining all the ugly details of my experience. I then get a call from Hagerty with excuses. "The person working my case has been out of the office" "we can't find all the details of your case" I shouldn't have to explain to my collector car insurance company that my classic car is my most important possession and I trusted and paid a fee for a service that would ensure my car is cared for by professionals at my most vulnerable moment - broken down on the side of the road. I still don't understand why a different tow company wasn't called after the 45 min mark. Why it took 6 days for Hagerty to reach out to me (only after I sent them a long letter detailing my complete experience) to only have excuses on the experience. This was my first experience actually having to "use" Hagerty and ironically also my last. It all worked out for me though, American Classics Insurance is HALF the price for DOUBLE the coverage. We never had a problem with insurance for our HOT RODS. We had them for 8 years never late on a payment. Used the insurance for a few stolen rims. And got behind 1 month on our insurance. They declined us for new coverage. After 8 years of being a customer with Hagerty. Come to find out that the hot rod club that we know had the same issue with a few club members. Absolutely a horrible company to deal with. Been a customer with them for 6 years with 6 cars. I tried to get an insurance card only to find out that they dropped me with no notification. They said they tried to call me two months ago. I looked, no missed calls back then, not one missed calls. I asked them, you only call once, you don't send a letter or try to call again, even though they never called the first time. Totally a rotten company. Now I am trying to get a refund for the unused two months left on the policy, since I don't have a policy anymore. They tell me I can't because they can't get into the policy to make changes. Just as an intro I created a Yelp profile just for this review, now on to the important stuff: It all began last week when I wanted to insure a new purchase of mine and decided to go online and fill out the questionnaire to be contacted by someone. It asked which way I would rather be contacted, either by phone or by email. Because I work the hours that they are open I elected to be contacted via email. This is where it started to go downhill, because they started calling me while at work and I couldn't answer the phone. But no emails were sent to me. I called up a day later during my 30 minute lunch break, where I was immediately put on hold for an extended period of time and then put on hold again while waiting to speak with an underwriter. I was put in contact with Jake, and he was fantastic and a pleasure to talk and work with. After our 20 minute or so conversation everything was ironed out and taken care of. Well less than 2 minutes later I got another call which I ignored because I was back at work once again because of being on the phone for my entire lunch break and back to what I was doing. Ashley left a voicemail that I must call back even though I just spent all that time on the phone. I call back the following day while on a short break to see what was the problem. I was put on hold again for an extended time, then when someone came back to the phone I was told that all the underwriters were too busy to talk to me and that my policy had been declined and that I would get something in the mail. But no explanation was given nor was I given a chance to speak with an underwriter which is extremely unprofessional. I will NEVER use Hagerty Auto Insurance unless something is done to correct this current issue in a timely manner. I don't understand how your company says they support the hobby and want to help the car community. Horrible customer service. I inusred a 1957 Cadillac with Haggerty in 2013 and a few months later an octagenarian ran his motor home down the side of the car in a parking lot (he couldn't see a 20' turquoise car). There was zero question about liability. 3 weeks later, when a claims "professional" came out to look at the damage (after numerous calls), I found out that Haggerty sold the policy to a standard auto insurance company. The adjuster had no clue about the value of the car, repairs or replacement parts cost - he asked me who he should contact! The claim took 6 weeks to settle, and another 4 weeks before they issued a cheque for the repairs. I sold the car in February and since then have cancelled my policy 3 times! Tonight I had to spend 20 minutes going to get a registered letter only to find out these fools had cancelled my policy in mid August (6 months later) for lack of payment. I don't know what Haggerty in the US is like, but stay away from them in Canada as they sell the policy to people who know nothing about classic cars or repairing them. After being referred by my dad, my brother and several friends, I contacted Hagerty to insure my newly acquired 1968 Camaro Z28 RS. Matching numbers, investment grade Z28. The online process was a little bumpy but eventually a real person called me. That's when the dissapointment started. The underwriter valued my car at $75K maximum. My representative Cara was not interested in other auctions and values I had showing at minimum $82k with several examples of mid $90-$100k sales. I asked why the low valuation, she stated they found the listing where I purchased the car at auction for $71K. Cara said that is what the value is based on, not prior sales. HUH? That does not make sense. She was curt and said that's all we can do. I asked to speak to the underwriter. The car is a documented RS Z28 which increases the rarity and price. Cara said no. Then our call was disconnected and she never called me back. She called another customer, leaving me to deal with a new representative and to tell the story again. For a self proclaimed car enthusiast guided organization, they are far from providing a good customer experience. The price for my coverage was not an issue, I would have paid whatever they quoted, I wanted to make sure the replacement value was realistic since this car is so hard to find. Hagerty has followed the path of all insurance companies, all they want to do is take your money and not provide any service. I have insured a number of vehicles over the past 15 years and have never had a claim, nor do I have one now. My issue with Hagerty is their lack of service, they want you to do all business online and then the system won't allow any changes or add a new vehicle. They now require you to be on hold for 30 minutes and cut you off with they don't want to deal with you. So let me preface by saying all collector car insurance companies are horrible, Hagerty is not the only one, but since I just had 3 Hagerty experiences in one week I will write my review here. I had written one earlier but I deleted it bc I thought they had resolved my issue, but they didn't and so here it is. So initially I'll give some background by saying im 31 and live in a very nice condo in the best part of miami beach, I have zero tickets or accidents on my record. So from a standpoint of risk, Im probably as close to risk free of a 31 year old as you will find. I recently bought my dream Ferrari, childhood dream car, nothing really special in terms of cars $135,000. I actually have an S65 thats $225k that was not a problem to insure with state farm as my daily. Anyways let me tell you about Hagerty and why based on how they act potential customers, I can tell you it will be a damn chore to get paid by them bc they will probably look for every flaw they can find to deny you. 1st call - yes everything looks good but we cant insure you bc its a new purchase + you live in a condo + the car is an open end lease, ok got it 2nd call - i figured it was a mistake bc lots of people finance exotics for tax/cash flow purposes. This time its not bc its financed, thats no issue, but bc its at a condo and its high risk, even though my building has units for sale up to $60m, its still high risk for whatever reason, anyways I give up and move on. At this point, I've sought the help of an independent high net worth insurance rep to help me, well all the companies want you to bring over all your properties,businesses,etc just to insure a little classic car, that was not happening. Again this car is worth about $135k today but I wanted agreed value policy vs actual cash value from state farm who insures it now bc I want to make sure if an accident happens I get paid market value for a car with under 600 units made and not some bogus made up insurance value which state farm will do. Anyways my insurance rep knows an underwriter at hagerty and calls in today and this is the joke of a response she was given The client and his gf, yes gf of 9 years, we're not legally married but have lived together 9 years. Well she comes up as a person in the household and because we dont have separate cars for me,her and then the ferrari they couldn't do the policy. So everything else checked out here bc someone called for me: The condo was fine, the financing was fine, the value was fine but because at our vacation home mind you, because we had only 2 cars at our vacation home, Hagerty denied me a third time So guys here's the moral of the story, if hagerty will look for every way to decline you BEFORE you're a customer, just think of what they will do once you are a customer and need them. An extra parking space at my condo is $75,000. I have 2 of them, I have a cadillac SUV thats maybe $50k for when we need to take friends,haul things, whatever and I have my new to me modern classic Ferrari and with 2 cars, I need a 3rd car.....at my VACATION home....just to fit into hagerty's insurable portfolio. What's even more hilarious is here I am a 31 year old with an exotic car, a guy clearly with money and a love for exotic cars and instead of turning into a customer of Hagerty's for the next 40-50 years or however long im blessed to be alive, they put the worst taste in my mouth imaginable. All the companies were the same Grundy,JC Taylor, American classic was the worst bc you can only insure a car if its going to shows/parades LOL who the hell does that? Anyways what Im saying is, underwriters, their job is to look on a case by case basis and these guys can't even do that, you think they're gonna treat you and your accident any better? My recommendation, Im sticking with state farm as awful as it is, I had an appraiser come this morning, he appraised my car at $142k, higher than I thought, and I sent it to state farm and they boosted my actual cash value policy, which is awful btw, they boosted it to $580 every 6 months. At this point after 4 days of wasting my time trying to get an agreed value policy which will never happen bc i dont own enough cars and live at a condo or whatever new reason these insurance companies wanna give you just dont waste your time with any of them. If you have the money to buy $135,000 5th car you have the money to write off a total loss if you crash it, all these classic car companies are joke flat out and I wouldn't recommend anyone even waste their time with is ESPECIALLY if you own a condo, do yourself a favor and dont even waste time, I could write a book on how awful the last 4 days were in terms of being 31 and trying to insure a classic Ferrari. Don't know why some in the reviews section have such bad experiences with Hagerty. I recently had a comprehensive claim when my vintage motorcycle fell over in 30mph+ winds while in the driveway. Within 2 days they sent an appraiser out, and a week after that they had a check on the way. The amount their appraiser quoted for repairs was within $10 of my estimate so pretty much spot on. Maybe there is a difference between how they handle cars vs. motorcycles, but in my experience it was very pleasant to deal with them. read more

I've been with Hagerty for over 10 years insuring multiple cars. Always pay in full for the year and never had any claim or issues. Yesterday I receive a notice from the DMV that my insurance and subsequently my registration is cancelled. Bewildered I called Hagerty who I had not heard from, even though they have my email and phone number. Turns out they incorrectly processed payment from April when I added a new Porsche to the policy and never contacted me to rectify. Even though they screwed up they decided to cancel the policy with no notice given, so I've been driving around in uninsured cars for a few months at this point. I can't believe in this day and age a company wouldn't want to keep their customers, or at the least ensure they are protected/insured given their message in the market of 'caring about customers and cars'. I would look at any other insurance company, would be terrified of actually having to deal with these guys in the event of an accident. Love to see them continuing to try and make this not their fault, confirmed multiple times they messed up the payment (re 'matt's' comment below). Canceled our policy with 2 months left on it when I sold my car. They sent us a form to send back and we sent it back. I purchased a Porsche 356 replica and asked about insuring it and what the status was on my refund and if we could credit it to the balance. They said they did not get the paper work and that they would not refund or credit the account.. If they are this petty over 50 dollars imagine if someone hit my car. I would not recommend. The guy was trying to tell me that this was better anyway because we would have continuous coverage so that if something did happen we would have a longer "relationship" so things would swing in our favor lol. Absolutely awful - 1st time customer and bad experience right from the get go. I called to inquire about a new policy for my classic Buick and thing were initially off to a good start. But their website advertises the premium at 6 months... but they make you pay 12 months unlike other standard insurance companies. I asked why when they went to collect my credit card information and they said "this is standard policy". I reluctantly agreed and the policy was issued. The next day I got a call from the representative that they "made a mistake" on the storage of my car. It is stored at a secured office location where you must have a FOB and has security cameras. I gave them the address during the intial quoting period. They then came back and said that the location was considered "public" and wanted to charge me an additional $195 per year in annual premium. This was their mistake and I'm not paying for it. Policy cancelled after day 1. I will also be spreading the word to my peers about the negative experience I had with Hagerty. read more

Hagerty has worked for me, Insurance was right for an old custom street rod. Had one claim, Hagerty serviced appropriately. Added a second vehicle and no issues. Price was less expensive than others. Now, did have an issue with my state of Arizona, ADOT in that the insurance card did not have the appropriate code?? After a couple of calls, all was set right. I have two high quality classic cars. I have tried three different times to purchase insurance from them. Every time I get one of their on line quotes they are competitive, however when I contact an agent, the quote escalates immediately. Each time they end up being the most expensive of all quotes. Most recently I again received an on line quote for $316 per year (yes, I did provide all correct info), then I called to start the application process. They then said the cost would be $358 a year. I started the application on the phone and didn't have the vehicle vin number by the phone so I had to call back. When I called back the cost magically went up to $378. I was so disgusted I told them I no longer wanted to apply. The agent was totally uninterested with an "I couldn't care less if you insure with us or not" attitude. I can only guess that they have so many insured that they really don't care if they get new customers. I will be sure to relay my experience with the members of the three classic car clubs that I belong to. After seeing the enormous number of negative reviews on this site, I am actually pleased that I didn't use them. Went through a lengthy and intrusive online application system where the company now has a ton of my personal info only to find that the two hobby vehicles I own are ineligible for their coverage at any premium (1994 Range Rover due to occasional off-road use and 1987 Vanagon due to $5k mileage a year for our western trip). My experience with Hagerty's application process had me expecting a tv host to tell me I was just punke while pointing out the cameras to me.I applied for insurance online as I have for the last 10 yrs. I answered all questions provided all documents that were required including information and photos of vehicles that I already have insured with another company and paid a year of coverage . Three days later I receive an email asking that I send the remaining information via USPS or by email If I have any questions contact them. I reply by asking what it is they still need, only to receiving the same email asking that I send the information via email or USPS. Went through my agent to insure with Hagerty and after jumping through many hoops with them (a "driving resume" detailing high performance experience, multiple documents, etc) supposedly a policy was issued and I got ID cards (3 cars). Didn't get a copy of the policy, so subsequently went online to look. Got a message on the site that my policy was being canceled. No prior notice given to me or my agent, who reps Hagerty. Called customer service, and the rep was no help. Said there was a problem in underwriting, but didn't know what it was. Didn't know why me or the agent weren't advised. Agent contacted Hagerty and got a run-around. Would issue the limits we requested if I provided an umbrella policy, etc, etc. Basically BS tactics. Long story short, have found a much better insurer (Google "Classic Car Insurers" for options) and will be looking at Hagerty in the rear view mirror and will ignore their ads in the Goodguys Gazette in the future. read more

I called Hagerty for a quote for my collector car a day ago. I was emailed the quote and told Conner I wanted to look up their online reviews before I made a choice. Today I started my research and saw the MULTITUDE of bad reviews and complaints with them. This afternoon I get a call from Christa, who tells me that the policy was written(without my approval) and they needed a payment, They also said they looked at a google earth picture of my home and told me there was no garage, which was untrue, My car is in my garage right now. I explained that their reviews of incompetance here on YELP was just verified with all the mistakes that was made with my quote. I didnt even sign up with them and they made MULTIPLE mistakes. How many mistakes are they making with their paying clients??? HORRIBLE INCOMPETANCE cost them my business. I have been with Hagerty for around 10 years, the problem I am having is that it's renewal time, and since I don't drive the car, engine is out. I just wanted to drop my coverage down to comprehensive. They said that's fine, but they WILL NOT remove the Drivers Club as I requested, they really want that extra $70 a year, I called 3 times already to get it removed, the last being this morning, it's still on my renewal that evening. Just tried to get insurance through this company, what a waste of time. How does this company have one 5 star Yelp review from 2012 and the rest here are all 1 star? If you look at their customer reviews on their company website, all 139 of them are 5 start...really My car is parked in gated storage that has video surveillance 24hr and I rarely take it out. I typically drive less than 100 miles on the car per year. Hagerty asked me if I ever leave the car outside of my storage facility when I take it out, and yes I do. I drive it to the movies, maybe downtown and sometimes I leave it out overnight parked in public. I also park it in our parking space where we live in a gated lot where I can actually see the car. Its a very safe lot but unfortunately not safe enough for Hagerty to insure my car. They basically told me if I leave the car parked anywhere except my storage facility and I am not with the car then they won't insure it. Whatever Hagerty now I know why you are advertising on Speed Channel trying to get more business, good luck. Beware of the policy details with this Ins company otherwise you may end up not being covered due to some detail they didn't disclose to you when you signed your policy. My advise, read the fine print and ask them alot of questions when they start to call you during the initial policy setup. They called acting extremly rude asking where my nineteen year old would be driving the Model A . Hagerty is a real time waster. After jumping through hoops they refused to insure my car because I drove 2500 miles the first 7 months of ownership. (7 divided by 2500 would = 4200 per year). I explained that my first month or two were higher than normal in that it was a new toy and that my expected miles would be around 3K per year estimated. To high mileage to insure, can't do it! Knowing, this don't waste your time filling out all their crap, sending pictures and processing payment up front. BTW, their rates are not that competitive! hagerty is a dishonest company, they sold me insurance they NEVER intended to pay on. Their reps lied to me and played games intended to withhold payment of claims. the claims estimator arrived at my house 2.5 hours late and was high on drugs, submitted an estimate 35% of actual dealer repair cost, leaving 65% of the bill for me to pay. Not only do I insure my car through Hagerty, but I have all of my customers with them if they qualify. During Hurricane Sandy, they did a wonderful job working with people who had cars flood damaged. With many of these older cars, they were able to help the owner salvage the car instead of just paying the totaled amount. All of my customers who have had claims with Hagerty have been extremely pleased. Plus they don't have all of the exclusions that many of the other companies have. This insurance company will punish you for any and all claims you may ever have throughout the life of the policy. If you have one claim that's fine. It's when you start to have two or more claims that they then decide to cancel the policy on you. Regardless of whether it's a rock that strikes your windshield or vandalism, things that are out of your control, they will add up how much they paid and then send you a nice non-renewal letter in the mail afterwards. The purpose car collectors have insurance is to protect against anything that can happen when you take your car out on the street. Their implication is that you just leave your car sitting in a garage, because if you take it out on weekends you run the chance of having something happen to it. There are other insurance companies out there that are worth the coverage they have for your car. Stay very clear away from this company. read more

Stay far away! I filled out all the information they requested honestly and openly. Only to be told "your car has too much horsepower for us to cover you". What kind of insurance company insures classic and collector cars only to 500hp?!!! The super cars out there are pushing well beyond 700 and often close to 1000. Even many mildly modified stock classic cars are well beyond 500. Additionally, both people I spoke two provided horrible customer service, no empathy, nor referrals to companies which would provide coverage. read more

I've been with Hagerty a long time. While I have sometimes encountered some weird inconsistencies on what they will / will not cover, overall I am a big fan. The most important thing for any insurance is what happens when a claim is filed. I did have a claim a few years ago on my Amphicar (by the way they are one of the few insurers who allow use in the water as the Amphicar was built for). The service was well above expectations. They were not only supportive of having the damage repaired properly, they were pushing for it. I was not sure if a component was damaged without tearing it down and their response was, "if you have any doubt, have it checked and / or repaired / replaced". I used multiple shops, chased down some parts myself, and never had a single problem. Once the claim was settled they did NOT jack my rates up. I do have some odd-ball vehicles (I like the orphans) and have sometimes been told a vehicle is not eligible. In almost all cases, a call to the right person will result in a review of the request and a satisfactory resolution (probably more so for established customers). If I could insure my daily drivers with them, I would do so. read more

Pretty good when you don't need a clam they are supportive when they initially get the claim but then of course they say they will make the best efforts and send you a check, which always seems to be much less money than even quoted by local merchants. You then must work on them sniveling you not including shipping for key parts or sales tax for your location for the labor etc.. They also will only give $35 per hour for a glass install, everyone here is around the hundred an hour so I'm not sure what country they actually want us to get our windshields replaced in... read more

Despite regularly storing my car in the garage, I was denied coverage because their underwriting department looked at Google satellite view and saw my car parked in front of the garage (not in). The Google shot in question was taken on a sunny day (i have a convertible) when I had just parked it temporarily. If you still feel like these guys are worth checking out, make sure you stalk yourself with Google street view to make sure you didn't leave your classic uncovered long enough for a snapshot. read more
