One year later and Annie is still by far, the best stylist in Northern Virginia! I had a horrible cut and perm done when I was in China last year and since then, I've been impatiently waiting for my hair to grow out so I can cut the unwanted perm. My hair looked awful, and every day I just swept it into a ponytail or clipped it so it was out of my way. I finally had enough and booked an appointment with Annie to see if she could salvage my hair. I actually used the Yelp Request an Appointment on her Yelp page and a few hours later, Annie responded to me via text confirming a date and time. She is very quick to respond and she even provided a follow-up confirmation text one day prior to my appointment. She's located in the Sola Salons in University Mall. Each stylist has their own room. I told Annie about my hair situation, and I asked her if she thought it would be a good idea if I went balayage. She honestly and candidly told me no, that I should wait until my perm was gone for good before attempting balayage. She stated that she didn't recommend more damage to the hair. I really appreciated her openness and direct feedback. I absolutely detest going to stylists who do not offer their professional opinions about anything - why am I going to a professional if you can't speak to your area of expertise? But Annie will absolutely tell you her suggestions and opinions, just as a true professional should. I trust her vision. So instead of balayage, she suggested as close of a color match to my ends (from my former coloring session) as possible. I also asked for her to chop off an inch to an inch and a half. The entire session lasted about 2 hours. Annie was super meticulous throughout the cut and color. After she shampooed and conditioned my hair, she even provided my hair with a much-needed deep-conditioning treatment to improve the condition of my hair. Afterwards, she painstakingly cut, blow-dried, and styled my hair to perfection. At the end of my session, I looked like a changed woman. I was very, very happy with my cut and color. Total was $200 even. Annie is a very talented and very sought after hair stylist - and with good reason! She can restore damaged hair like no other. She can color like no other. Annie really listens to what you want to do and give you professional opinion on how and if you can get to what you want. She's honest and she does not leave any information out. She takes her time to discuss what you want to do and the options. She makes you comfortable that you can ask if something can be done. I got my hair done on 3/23.(pics marked with dates) two weeks later after I got used to the new color, I wanted my hair slight darker around my face. I went in on 4/11. Annie understood and was happy to do what I asked. I cannot speak enough of how much I appreciated her professionalism. I truly loved everything she did and suggested. Everything came out to exactly what I had asked for and what she had described to me. No surprises. So go to her! It will be a great experience! I just wanted to show variations of the color and what I actually asked for. Pictures are so deceiving!! I was fooled before by other salons beautiful photos on yelp! The color is more beautiful in person! So make sure you do your homework before choosing a stylist!!!! My 1st session was 5 hrs. 2nd session close to 3 hrs with a haircut. All expected. You need to factor in what you want to do and what's realistic with what the stylist tell you. Don't be fooled by others in the area. All photos were taken un-styled aka the best way to show the hair color. For picture reference: 3/23 pictures marked that were taken at 7pm at night. Looked warmer on photo than in person. The others were taken indoor which was closer to the true color. A very ashy toned gradient blonde. 4/11 annie took the photo in her studio with the white lights indoor. Looked more blonde than in person 4/13. Pictures taken during the day indoor facing the light, outdoor facing the light and against the light. Hair looks warmer when it's under the sun. I'm so happy to find a stylist I really like! I have very thick hair that tangles easily, and gets really heavy which makes it difficult for me to style my hair. Annie took off a lot of weight without sacrificing length, I love it! I can put my hair up in a bun without it hurting my neck. I'm not sure what products she uses, but it made my hair feels soft and smooth. She knows what she's doing and her space is adorable! I was in desperate need of a cut and color and made an appointment with Annie at Salon Mint because of all the great reviews about her on here. I am so glad I did, and I'm also glad she has her own business now. I told her generally what I wanted and showed her some pictures, and she made recommendations based on what would look good and what wouldn't look good on me. For example, I wanted layers but she said they wouldn't come out right with my length. And I got ombré and she recommended putting highlights on the top to make it look more natural. Annie is my favorite! It took me a few years to find an expert stylist but it was worth the wait. I first started seeing Annie when she worked at Salon Mint, and then followed her as she established her own business a few weeks ago. She's very friendly and listens carefully during consultations to ensure she understands what I want (especially when I can't exactly describe the look I want). She has consistently executed my desired look, even though it may be slightly complicated- for example, during my last visit, she colored my roots, cut my hair in a shaggy lob, and did lowlights and balayage highlights (with some magical combination of toners) within a few hours. The best part was that she uses the best products and techniques to ensure that my hair stayed shiny, soft, and damage free :). I was looking for someone in the Fairfax area who had good reviews for doing balayages and I found Annie. When I called to make my appointment, she was super sweet and she actually had availability for the next day! She is so easy going and was really easy to open up to. I have psoriasis on my scalp and have always been embarrassed when I went in for hair cuts. Annie made me feel really comfortable and I didn't feel at all embarrassed because she told me it's totally fine and that she see a lot of people with dry skin. I also haven't dyed my hair in over 10 years, so I was a bit afraid to get blonde highlights. Annie looked at several pictures I showed her and said that the type of blonde I wanted would look great. She took her time doing the highlights and ended up adding brighter highlights to add definition to my hair. She made use of my natural highlights, to make the balayage look even more natural and seamless. She also gave me a hair cut as well to complete the hair makeover. I absolutely loved it! My hair was super silky after the process and the highlights were not choppy at all. I also loved that she explained everything she was doing and gave me advice on what shampoos and what I should ask for during my next visit. It's actually been a month and a half since my appointment (sorry I took so long to review!) and my color still looks great! I got back from my haircut/deep conditioning appointment with Annie about 12 hours ago and I've already gotten more compliments on my hair than I can count. Yesterday, my hair was basically un-brushable, frizzy, dry, and rough. After seeing Annie, it's soft and smooth and it has movement that makes it look so beautiful and manageable. I love Annie!!! She is the best! I live in California but I would go back to Northern Virginia just to get my hair done by Annie. People say why can't I just get my hair done by a hipster Californian stylist? Well, 1) Annie is totally hip! 2) Annie is originally from SoCal 3) Annie, again, is amazing at what she does. So yes, I will go on a plane and take that 5+ hour flight again and again just to get my hair done!!! I went through budget box hair for several years. However, starting now I want to take care of myself and get in with the cool kids and got balayage done. Annie showed me the bands of colors that was created by the cheap me and voilà she fixed it. So, this review is looooong overdue, and it's a very long review. Truth be told, I haven't done any reviews in months because life as a working mom has been a battle for survival. :P My husband will tell you that I obsess over my hair, I do lots of research on hair, I am always itching to change my hair, but am scared to do anything new to my hair and have to be committed to it. I am otherwise quite minimalistic, but since hair is worn everyday, and has to go with whatever you're wearing-- pajamas, date night dress, jeans and a t-shirt, etc., I do tend to obsess. I also have the type of personality in which I secretly would love to change my hair color weekly, and have lots of tattoos like all those cool hipsters on Instagram, but feel limited by my budget and lifestyle. Which is why I tend to worry and ask millions of questions because when I get my hair done-- it's quality over quantity, and it's a huge investment for me. So this is a LONG review, and this is for all those other other girls out there who worry about their hair and want to KNOW what they are going to pay for! That was a long preamble to my review, because it sets the stage for my review. This was my second time with Annie. I had visited her for the first time with virgin hair when she worked at Salon Mint in Fairfax. I had initially went to her after finding her through Yelp reviews and asked for a subtle Balayage, and she delivered (I had written an ieview way back when, after that visit.). Then I had visited elsewhere just to try somewhere new and went bolder with blonde balayage. (baby steps). I visited elsewhere not because I did not like Annie, but I just like trying new things and I had lots of good things about this other hair stylist. For my third Balayage Ombre attempt I visited Annie again. It was not as easy finding her this time, because she was working out of another spa-- but now she has opened up her own salon, so this is out of date information. Again, I obsess and worry over my hair and ask millions of questions. Even though I do lots of "research" on my hair, I still don't know a lot about hair (of course I don't, I did not go to hair school.) She patiently answered ever single question in depth. I never felt rushed. She made me feel very welcome, and was super informative. She is super hip, so may seem intimidating at first, but then after talking to her, you immediately feel at ease. This was in contrast to all the times I have visited other salons and felt rushed, not understood, or the stylists were always super busy and I would instead have "assistants" working on me all the time. Annie is the type of girl I would love to have as a friend. I was super appreciative of her and time and patience with me. This really calmed my nerves (this is extremely embarrassing that I am making it publicly known how much I obsess over hair, like I'm going in for major surgery.) She took her time and worked on my hair, paying attention to details, and taking her time. She again, is super personable and I felt comfortable even though it was just her and me for hours. The result: After much deliberation and consultation, and Annie patiently explaining the ins and out of coloring, I ended up getting Babylights and Balayage. I wanted to go boldly light, lighter than the blonde I had already had in my hair from my last hair coloring 6 months earlier. The color ended up being much darker than I anticipated, so that, I was disappointed by. I struggled with writing this review because I loved Annie's service, but felt torn about saying that I did not like how dark it was, and I did not say anything at the time (sorry, Annie!). But I (being the stereotypical Asian girl that I am), did not say anything about it after it was done, plus I thought maybe it would get lighter on it's own after a little bit of time and a few washes with purple shampoo. But the way she did the Babylights and Balayage looked quite natural, subtle, and blended with my hair very well. Even now, 5 months afterwards, I don't need touchups because it blends in with my hair, and grew out well. In conclusion, I think Annie does an awesome job with a subtle Balayage look, especially if you are low-maintenance and want hair that will grow out well. But I'm not quite sure yet about if she's as experienced with bolder, blonder Balayage on thick Asian hair. But looking back, I wonder if my worry also caused her to go more subtle? But because of this, I am giving her 4 rather than 5 stars. Cost: It was expensive. I don't remember the exact number. $300+ But I know Babylights is time intensive. I have found after much research, that her cost is about the same as other places that do Balayage well. Although it was expensive, and I have a very limited budget, I did tip more than I usually do, because I was so appreciative of her time, patience, and effort, and wish every stylist would do the same. read more

Annie is such an amazing hair stylist. We are so lucky to have her in Northern VA. She received all of her training from CA. The one thing I love about her is that she truly listens to what customers say. She never assumes or tries to decide for you. She always listens patiently to particularly what style of hair you want. I didn't even want to go to the gym that day because I didn't want to ruin Annie's work. This was my first experience dying my course virgin Asian hair. Anyhow if you want an amazing experience and you want your hair done right the First Time, I would recommend no other person than Annie. She is so personable and she does not try rush her clients into a certain style. She treats her clients as friends/family and not just as another number in an assembly line like some hair salons. Annie is extremely patient and is an artist at heart. She doesn't want any customer leaving her chair unless the final hair is near perfection. I have long, long wavy-curly hair, which I wanted to have layered and refreshed without losing the length. I'm always nervous to get it cut because stylists who are less than excellent will often cut too much and/or allow my waves to hide the multitude of their mistakes. I was very particular of what kind of highlighted ombré I wanted and Annie took the time to listen and explain how it would all work out. As you can tell from the other reviews, Annie is great! So I'll be brief. Annie is sweet and talented. And she has many loyal customers. But my favorite aspect of my first root touch up with her was her attention to detail. Having nearly black hair, getting root touch ups can be horrible, mainly because the dark hair dye can leave dark stains on your hairline. Annie paid very close attention to make sure that she got good coverage of my roots AND made sure to wipe around my hairline very meticulously and rinse well so that I didn't have the dreaded hairline stains. My hair looks amazing every time I leave and she is so sweet - she never hurries me out or pressures me to try anything. My hair is curly and dry - and she does wonders with it!
