HBD has always been excellent. You get a friendly welcome, the site is roomy, immaculate and homey with seasonal decorations and plants. There is a comfortable waiting space where you can even have a cup of coffee and a biscotti. Oh yes, and you get a great, personally designed hair cut. I have been using the salon for years and I am moved to write this review now because I had one more wonderful experience with my last cut. Living in two states, CT and PA., I try to time my cuts to be in CT so I can go to HBD. Last month I had a terrible, awful hair cut in Philadelphia. Six weeks later, I arrived at HBD and could see, "What happened to you?" in Casey's eyes. And then, snip, snip, snip, she fixed it. I felt like myself again. I've debated writing about my experience because my stylist was kind, but I do have some feedback for the salon: if clients will be rushed out the door in the last hour, please make that clear when someone is booking. When I called I said I was a new client and needed a "really good" haircut with lots of layering, bangs, I have thick hair, the whole works. The original date I asked for was full and a different date was offered, I said yes, excited because I've wanted to try out this salon for a long time based on reviews/photos. When I went in, it was quiet - just 1 other person getting their hair done. After being seated my stylist suddenly seemed flustered by the time (we had a little over an hour before the place closed, which I hadn't realized before) and said she couldn't style my hair. To her credit she asked if I wanted a shampoo but I felt rushed and said we could skip it. I explained what I really wanted (a short wolf cut) but my only reservation was it was before a wedding, and she agreed it could look awkward. In truth I brought it up to gauge her reaction because I didn't want someone who wasn't enthused about it to make such a drastic change to my hair. No problem, had a safer backup ready to go, still with lots of edgy layers and the V-cut I love. Talked it out and showed a reference pic from all angles of this haircut. What I received was nothing close. My hair was cut bluntly straight across, my layers almost blend into the longest ends of my hair, and my face framing pieces are completely uneven. She did a good job on my bangs, though at the time, they were flying straight off my face. I'm talking almost 90 degrees. I was trying not to panic and reassure her at the same time so she didn't feel bad that I looked ridiculous, saying my hair just needed to figure it out and would settle. I walked out of the salon with one hand literally covering my forehead holding down my bangs trying not to cry and thankfully had a beanie in the car to throw over my head. I've gotten bad cuts before but never walked out looking wild like that. I will say - that experience has opened me up to try cutting my own hair at home, so I bought some shears and am looking forward to experimenting. read more

Victoria at this spot recently started a year ago here and she's amazing. Everytime I go she slays my hair. Last time I went in for a trim and she cut my hair exactly how I asked she didn't take off too much and she accept me how it was every big snips of my hair fell. As she knows how I feel about my hair being too short. She was very patient and kept be entertained with talking and catching up. read more

1 1/2 years ago I booked an appointment for a haircut, and highlights at this salon that I had gone to for many years. It used to be excellent, but not anymore. The person who had been doing my hair was triple booked for my time slot. She was so distracted and careless. She couldn't find my color card and decided to wing it. My highlights looked like stripes and very unnatural. She then moved on to cut my hair. I had provided multiple pictures that she ignored. I asked for an asymmetrical bob and she cut off the side that was going to be the long side and cut my hair several inches shorter than I asked for. I will never go to this salon again. For what I paid, I should have had my stylists attention. read more

I had an excellent visit with HBD today! I walked in and was greeted by Nadine who offered me coffee, tea, or water, asked how I prefer it prepared, and brought it over to my stylists chair. I had the pleasure of having Emily do my hair, and I can honestly say it was the best haircut I've ever gotten. She did exactly what I described and was so nice! I went here a few weeks ago nervous to cut the long hair I've always had off, but knew I wanted to try something new. Michael cut my hair and he was excellent! He knew I was a little nervous but I put my trust into letting him cut my hair shorter than usual and he did amazing. I highly recommend him. Plus the salon is beautiful, hidden spot by club 24. I have been coming to Hair By Design since I was about 10-11 years old (now 24). My old hair dresser left so I have been going to Michael for the past few years and I love him. He is attentive and listens to everything you want. He's so sweet and always has a positive attitude and energy about him every time I see him and always makes sure I'm comfortable. He has also dyed my extensions as well which he did a great job on. My friends always say I pay so much to get my hair done but I've always been so happy with the way it comes out (cut, color, etc.) and the stylists and receptionists are so kind so I like to say that I'm also paying for the great atmosphere and experience which I don't mind at all. read more

I have really coarse and thick straight hair that lies flat to my head. I went there, and they did amazing job at thining it out and giving it a lot of volume. The price is a bit on the expensive side but it was worth the expert layering I got. I will go back again for coloring next time. read more

The "Diva Cut Method" is spot on. Brittany, takes the time during your initial consultation with her to discuss your own hair style/ styles and works with your natural curl to deliver a flawless cut that is easily replicated at home and not just in the salon. I can only write this based on my experiences with them, as such: Best place for a haircut or styling in the area. I do have longer hair and I do have a style to it and I'm comfortable putting that in the hands of this capable staff. They are friendly and willing to make everything just right, you can be sure you'll have a pleasant experience with this place. I have had a few walk-in's here but I have also had a few times where they were all full so I recommend calling at least the day prior. I can not vouch for the salon half of this business as I have no experience with them, but if they keep up what they've done with the other half then it's bound to be good. As a curly girl who is used to having Devachan haircuts in NY, I searched for a year for a local place to have my hair cut, but couldn't find a place within a 50 mile radius of my home. Sick of my complaining, my husband went online and found Hair by Design, in Torrington. I am not sure why I couldn't find it, but am so glad that he did. From the moment I called, I found the shop to be accommodating. They actually changed someone else's appointment to get me in to see Carissa the day before a retirement dinner I was attending. Carissa was friendly, lovely and trained in the Devachan method of cutting curly hair. I told her what I wanted and she nailed it! A great cut on the first try. I saw Emily next, who highlighted my hair with the balayage method which is great for curly hair. The color was wonderful, and I left the shop feeling that I could live happily in this area because I had found a fabulous hair salon. Last week, I returned to see Carissa for a root touch up. She suggested a new color and again, I left smiling and happy. This place is a gem.
