Just to start, I know there's often a stigma around going to Hair Cuttery instead of a high-end salon, but I've never had a bad experience here before. In fact, I've always felt comfortable and well taken care of, until now. I scheduled a haircut with Nancy, who had previously given me one of my all-time favorite cuts. Because of that, I felt confident and trusted her completely. I only get my hair cut about once a year, so this was something I was really looking forward to. From the start, something felt off. The wash was unusually rushed, but I brushed it off. Maybe she just needed to get my hair damp? I showed her photos of what I was looking for: shaggy layers and a bang cleanup. I made it clear I wasn't expecting an exact replica, I understand those photos are often styled, but I was hoping for something inspired by them. She looked at the photos for maybe 30 seconds, asked one or two quick questions about length, said "okay," and began cutting. No deeper conversation, no confirmation of the look. It felt cold and fast, like she was upset or checked out. I told myself, "She's been doing this for years. She knows what she's doing." I should've spoken up right then and walked away with just the wash. The entire cut took maybe 10 minutes. I looked at it briefly and, trying to be polite, said, "Oh, I like it," even though I could already feel something was wrong. I paid, tipped 30%, and even asked if I could pre-book a trim in a few months. She said "sure," but didn't follow through or engage. At that point, I already knew I wouldn't be returning. When I got home and let my hair fully dry... I cried. What I ended up with what looked like a bowl cut. The bangs were thick and helmet-like, pulled from the apex of my head. The "face-framing" went almost ear to ear, with none of the shape or texture I'd shown in the photos. I might as well put a bowl on my head and cut it myself at home. There was no easy fix--maybe thinning it would help, but the damage was done. I called back to ask if someone else could help correct it, and the person who answered the phone sounded frazzled. I could hear Nancy in the background, sounding irritated. I asked if I could come in on another day, when Nancy wasn't there, to have a different stylist help soften the cut... because at that point, I didn't feel safe having Nancy near my hair again. I was told only she could fix it. I felt defeated, thanked them, and hung up. Maybe it sounds small to some people, but this truly broke me. It was my birthday. I was celebrating it alone. I'm grieving the loss of my Mom. Obviously, Nancy couldn't have known that. But when you work in a profession that asks people to be vulnerable, like sitting in a chair and letting someone shape how they present themselves, basic kindness and presence should be part of the service. I didn't feel either. So thank you for the haircut. I'm still glad I tipped 30%, because I genuinely believe your industry deserves better pay. But please, be kinder to the people who sit in your chair. You don't know what they're carrying. And if you don't have the energy for a client, or you're not confident in the type of cut they're asking for, say so. Be honest. Offer alternatives. Don't rush them, dismiss them, or make them feel like an inconvenience. I won't be returning. And I won't be recommending this location to anyone again. I sincerely hope Nancy, and this salon, has a better day than the one you gave me. TL;DR: I came in trusting a stylist I'd seen before, asked for shaggy layers and a light bang trim, and left with a rushed 10-minute bowl cut that made me cry on my birthday. I called to ask for help and was told only the same stylist, who seemed upset and dismissive, could fix it. No kindness, no support, just damage I now have to grow out. My husband and I both go to Hair Cuttery in BG. It's cost efficient and easy to schedule. It's a great place for simple haircuts and trims.

I went to this salon today to get a trim off my hair. My hair was about mid-back when I went in, I had a lot of split ends and I wanted to get them cut off, expecting 2-3 inches off, MAYBE 4 to make sure it was healthy. However, my stylist, Tina, cut my hair VERY short, a bit longer than shoulder length. I specifically requested to keep as much length as possible and my request for how I wanted my own hair cut was not carried out. Not to mention the fact that the layers that Tina did were very choppy and there is a huge separation from the framing pieces around the face to my back. Thirdly, I am an athlete, and I usually do high ponytails, braids, buns, and all things hair but now with the horrific "layers" that are in my head it has made that very difficult, and quite ugly if done. Also, I had my hair cut here last year to cut the bleach off of my hair done by a different stylist, and a stylist (I believe it actually was Tina) wouldn't cut all my bleach off because they "didn't want my hair to be too short" when that is something that I never requested. All in all, this Hair Cuttery has a very bad way of taking requests and I will not be coming back ever. read more

Came here for (the 1st time) for my monthly haircut as other places near me were closing at 5 pm and I couldn't go elsewhere. This place is open till 7 pm on Saturdays which is good. The cost of a regular haircut for men (which includes shampooing) is a bit higher than some of the other places ($18 here as opposed to $14 or $15 elsewhere). But I didn't mind it because I needed to get the haircut and couldn't wait till the next day or beyond. I called them to confirm their hours and wait time. They did not have a wait and walk-ins were fine. When I got to the shop, I was greeted promptly and Tina, the master stylist, attended to me right away. Since there was no wait, I was asked to get seated for the haircut immediately. Tina asked me how I would like my haircut done. I explained it to her and she was able to cut my hair and style it as per my liking. I liked it and was satisfied with it. I also got my hair washed and eyebrows trimmed. I had a good experience, especially since Tina was able to give me a cut and style that I usually like. I would go back here. I would recommend this place for a regular men's haircut. read more

My appointment was for Blonde highlights with Tina at the Buffalo Grove Location at the Corner of Dundee and Buffalo Grove Road. I can't believe I actually expected for my hair to be highlighted. I walked out the same way I walked in... Brown outgrowth at the top and blonde bottom of my hair and was forced to pay $200 for nothing. I would say "You get what you pay for" but I have very short hair and it looks exactly the same as when I walked in. I still have the patch of Gray hair on the right and left side. I have been to other Hair Cuttery locations and have NEVER experienced this. And do you know that Tina gave me the wrong color and didn't say anything because they were out of the color. She just wanted the money. The manager told me she doesn't have any more of that color and asked if I would mind going lighter. I looked at her like, "Yes, that's what I'm her for. I'm thinking Tina simply didn't know what she was doing and picked a brown. I have a Wedding this weekend and my hair looks like crap. Therefore, I would never recommend Hair Cuttery to anyone, especially since I was forced to pay. read more

I've never been so unhappy with a haircut. Sorry to say, but Amanda (my hairstylist) butchered my hair pretty badly. I told her I wanted layers a V cut and that's not what I got. Instead I got an uneven cut with no layers, just a straight cut. I went a few days after to get it fixed since one side was longer than the other. At the salon, I saw she fixed it. But now that I'm looking at my hair its still pretty bad. Sucks to know I tipped her pretty good bc she was really nice but I was blind to see the mess she created :( . Dont go to Amanda, she clearly doesnt have the knowledge to be cutting hair. I want my money back. read more

My boyfriend goes to this hair cuttery, normally he gets a good haircut from only two of the staff members I believe Nancy and Gloria I think are their names. March 2nd we went in to get his haircut and Tina (which I've been told is the owner) came out and I know who she is and she does not know how to cut hair. My boyfriend told her what he wanted and even showed her a picture and she totally butchered his hair. She did his bangs so uneven it's not even funny and she didn't do the back of his head like he wanted. My mom has gotten her haircut by this women before and she has butchered my mom's hair as well. As someone that owns or is the store manager of a hair salon and you don't know how to cut hair that looks poorly on your salon. I get my hair cut here just about every time I'm back in the BG area. I've seen several different stylists, and I've never left unhappy with the haircut. The stylists all seem very friendly. I'm not the kind of person to gossip with my stylist throughout the entire cut, and they are fine with that. They talk with the people who want to talk, and will ask me questions about school, but they never force conversation on me. The stylists I've seen have all been very helpful too. They give advice on how to take better care of my hair without being condescending, which I've had happen at other salons. I don't care to spend hours a day on my hair, so they've recommended some quick, easy to use products that have helped my hair look a lot better with very little effort. They're not pushy, though, which is also really nice. My one complaint is the cost. I come here because it's supposed to be cheap, and I guess compared to many salons in the area, it is, but when I just want my ends trimmed, I feel like that shouldn't cost over $20. But hey, I keep coming back because I'm willing to pay a couple bucks more than I'd like rather than risk a bad haircut at a cheaper place I don't know if I can trust or not. I've never done color or anything besides a cut here, so I can't comment on the quality of those, but based off my experiences, I would definitely recommend getting your hair cut here. read more

I've been to A LOT of salons where the stylist only half listens to what you want, has zero people skills (i.e. Ignores you the entire time and/or holds very short superficial conversation), and the customer goes home unhappy with what they just paid good money for. Sadly, chain salons are the biggest culprit with this. BUT! BUT! My experience at Hair Cuttery today was probably THE BEST experience I've ever had at any salon I've ever been to. In the past few months my hair has been butchered by stylists that somehow could not understand a dark auburn (kinda brown red) is NOT black. Because of these stylists, my hair was jet black in random areas, a faded out light brown in other areas, and red at my roots. Once my hair began to fade it looked even worse - which I didn't think was possible! As I explained what I wanted done to my wonderful stylist Rhiannon she was paying close attention to my requests while inspecting my hair. After a few minutes, she looked at me and said, "Ok... I need to strip these black patches down so they'll become lighter and then I'll wash out the treatment, blow dry your hair, and we'll dye it. I can't promise that the color is going to come out exactly as it's pictured but I'm going to make sure it looks good, one color, and blend nicely!" Almost 4 hours later, I am not disappointed! She took her time explaining every step of the long process and mixed my color perfectly! I'm so happy that I came in here today and I'll be recommending her to everyone I know! read more

Been here a few times and each time have had a different stylist cut my hair. I don't do anything fancy, just a normal clipper and trim cut. Despite having multiple professionals cut my hair here, I have always been very satisfied. The price is not low nor super high in my opinion: $15. They also have a card system to help make coming back easier and simplified.... Obviously a business strategy but as long as I'm willing to pay the price listed and am satisfied when I leave, that's all that matters. It's a good place to get a cut. read more

My regular hairstylist, the person I trust most in the world, is located in Naperville, a good 1 1/2 - 2 hour round trip from where I live currently. I'll head to her when I need a haircut but when I just need a bang trim, which happens way more often than I need a haircut, sometimes I don't feel like making the trek. I wanted a place where I could walk in, have the length taken off my super-ignored-bangs, not spend a large amount of money, not be talked into any other treatments, and basically be done in a few minutes. In comes The Haircuttery. I'd previously had a weird experience in a moment of desperation at a Great Clips in Evanston (where I walked out with more split ends than I walked in with? How does that happen?) so I'm wary of these quick-walk-in-haircut places. My usual salon sets me back $60 for a trim, so I'm pretty picky with my stylists. However, my bangs were so long I was pinning them back instead of drying them, so I needed an intervention. I was very pleased with my experience here. I walked in on a weekday afternoon and was in and out in 10 minutes. My stylist was Rhiannon and I totally trusted her. Call me weird, but I really only trust people who look put together and have good hair to do my hair. It makes me feel better. I was concerned about going to hair cuttery because the last time I went to a location in Chicago a number of years back, they messed my hair up so badly that I haven't been back. But since this location has such great reviews and so close to my place, I figured I'd take a risk and give it a try. As I entered, I was greeted immediately. I didn't have an appointment but I only waited for like 10 minutes. Norma was nice and friendly. And she's pretty knowledgeable. So far, my haircut seems great.
