My usual salon was booked and I need a salon in the area. Amethyst Skye is a local business so I called and booked an appointment. I needed my roots touched up and a cut to reshape my current style. My hair is fairly short. I did not receive my same haircut, in fact I cut it when I could inspect it more when I arrived home. I went to pay for what I now was clearly becoming distraught about, and I was told my bill was $550. I gasped! I did not even have a full color, I has in the shop for less than an hour, this would have bought me more than two haircuts and colors at my regular salon. I asked for the breakdown in price and was not given one. This is outrageous! Not to mention I cut my own hair when I arrived home. I have no words. My daughter went here for some hair coloring because it is close to our house and convenient. She wound up being there for 5 HOURS and consequently was late for work. She came home crying and told me they charged her 300 DOLLARS!! for the color and what was supposed to be a haircut. There was no haircut. She is a college student working to help pay tuition $300 is a weeks pay for her. I went the next day to find out how it could possibly be so expensive and the rudest, most annoying little fake smiling person told me she had "problem" hair and didn't have some mysterious coupon for the haircut. I can't even explain how smarmy and annoying this woman was. She said "have a nice day" and walked away. I have never left a negative review of anything or anyone in my life. After moving from Chicago and having the same stylist for years, I was extremely picky about the location of where I was going to get my balayage done in the area of Arlington Heights. I didn't want to go to a a very trendy place that was charging high prices either. The I heard about Amethyst Salon and as soon as I asked about a balayage and if I can get a consultation and they were able to see me within a week. Joey took a look at my hair and knew exactly what I wanted and I was able to personally text and talk to her too and she was able to squeeze me in to her schedule the following week after the consultation so everything happened pretty quickly. What I loved about Joey is that even though she listened to me she had her own thoughts and suggestions and what ended up happening was that she made the look that I wanted even better than I was expecting. She is a hard-working woman and knows what she is doing. She explained that she personally enjoys doing balayage and that is why she picked up on it when I called to schedule one and you can tell that her talent shines. it is a really good feeling to be stuck with the hairdresser for as long as I'm living in this area and she's working there. if you are reading this review and are wondering how your next color should be do not hesitate to book Joey or possibly anyone at the salon because they are great. read more

I was finally able to have my wedding and Karen and Nicole did my bridal parties hair. They were amazing. Karen is more of a great friend than my hairstylist since I have been going to her since I was in middle school! She put up with me changing my wedding date numerous times due to the pandemic but not once did she ever hesitate on my new date. All of our hair turned out beautiful. Karen did mine and helped me figure out what to do with my hair accessories and where to put them because I had no idea what would look best. CAUTION: NEVER COME HERE IF YOU WANT A GOOD CUT. I got the worse haircut of my life. I look like I just served two tours in Iraq. I asked for a simple trim and she cut all my hair off. I will be getting bullied for at minimum the next month. I would have rather had a blind kid who has never cut hair give me a haircut rather than going here again. The haircut was almost $40 and I look like a rat. I will never recommend Amethyst Skye Salon to anyone even if they decide to give out free haircuts. We are fairly new in the area. I wanted to see if they would be able to trim my daughter's hair. I contacted the salon via email explaining what I needed and even sent a picture of her hair. I never received a response. This was on 8/22/2021. It's a shame because now I'm looking for a salon to get a haircut. I have been going to Karen as my hairdresser and friend for many years! We may even go back to middle school... She is everything you could ever want -- so knowledgeable on all-things-hair, fun to chat with and just a really amazing person. I have had numerous haircuts and up-dos with her and truly appreciate the extra effort and time she has always put in, as my hair is thick/long. She always makes my hair feel so much lighter when she's done! Of course I wouldn't have anyone else do my hair for our wedding, and she knocked it out of the park. Lots and lots of curls and a braid!! She even found a great place for the barrette I picked out and it stayed in (and fit in with my veil). She also keeps up on industry trends with conferences and other workshops, which also shows her passion for her customers. After seeing the positive reviews on yelp and facebook, I thought would try someone new. Karen has a big space, cookies, coffee and cute decor. I wish the haircut and color were equally impressive. I went to her salon a few times for cut and "highlights." Every time she messed up something and I went back, only to have it more jacked. Highlights were the wrong color, very far from the roots and overprocessed. She left them on way too long while working on someone else and left a noticeable line from the roots. Karen "fixed it" by adding all over color, which left zero dimension, and a nightmare to grow out. The haircuts were equally disappointing, flat and uneven. She "fixed" the horrible shape by cutting off another inch and adding unwanted layers, then left a huge chunk uncut which I cut myself. IMO it was too much money for a series of bad haircuts and colors. She's very nice and may have the skills to do a nice job, but that wasn't my experience after giving her several tries to get it right. read more

Needless to say, I have followed Karen from her location at Randhurst to her new beautiful establishment over on Northwest highway. During that time she has been so gracious, accommodating, and really listens to me when I want a particular look or when I leave it up to her. Very Disappointed in this salon and in particular, Nicole. Had an appointment for hair and makeup. She did a very quick job on my hair, and had a friend of hers come in to do my makeup. Sponges were dirty, and she had bare bones to choose from. Good thing I bought some of my own stuff. Very unprofessional to say the least, but what gets me is that her friend coming in to get her hair done was more important than committing to a potential new client. Karen has been my trusted hair stylist for years. Even though I no longer live near the salon, I make the trip out to see her every single time my hair needs a cut or color because Karen is literally the only person I trust to get it right. She knows exactly what she's doing and she takes the time to listen to what you want. I also had the privilege of having Karen do my hair and my bridesmaids' hair for my wedding. We had several "hair strategy" sessions to make sure we both were on the same page with how I envisioned myself before the wedding. She also helped me mock up a schedule since I had 11 bridesmaids who all had to get their hair done in a short amount of time. Amethyst Skye Salon is located on Northwest Hwy in Mt. Prospect, easy to get to and great parking. Recently, I took a young 17 year old girl who suffers from depression to the salon for a 911 emergency. She had prom coming in a day and from the illness of depression she had let her long beautiful hair go without attention for awhile. Karen and her staff at first thought that her hair would need to be cut very short and recommended we go get a wig that she could wear to prom. Off we went to get a wig and return to the salon to get it styled for the prom. Karen and her staff took a look at her and her tears and decided to pull out an all out miracle. She and her staff worked relentlessly to get the hair untangled and fit her in between their appointments. They spoke to her with kindness and understood the situation and helped her feel safe and unjudged. This is so important because not only did they save and I mean save her hair they helped a young girl deal with the hardships of life. Four hours later she was beaming and beautiful in the chair and her hair was saved for the moment. The next day she went back to have an updo done for prom and once again Karen and her staff, Eva and Courtney and everyone else made a beautiful young girl even more beautiful. Her hair was stunning and she had a smile on her face which one rarely see's. The salon is full of excellent professionals who handle diffucult situations with a smile. The salon is upscale and very well done. They can do it all from the old school hair (my mom's era) to the trendy hairstyles and everything in between. They are warm, welcoming and always lots of laughter and happiness. The salon gives back to the community in many different charity effects to give back.
