I've been coming here for 10+ years now, both as a child with my family and now as a college student living nearby. I would 100% recommend Hair Design Center as I've always had positive experiences here. Frank and the rest of the staff are amazing and make you feel at home. Back in September of 2019 I had a keratin treatment done to my hair and it lasted for nearly 5-6 months which is significantly long for a keratin treatment. The sign on the shop says walk in's welcome. So I walked in and the guy inside looked surprised asking how he could help. I Said "Hello, I'd like a haircut when you can find the time". His reply " Well, You're not getting one now! " Which was off putting and kind of rude. Then says 3:30. I come back at 3:30 and there is a girl in a stool he is working on, her hair matted up as she said she hadnt washed it in a long time. He asked me to sit, after about 20 minutes he said thank you for your patience, the girl did have a major hair dilemma but after 40 minutes I had things I had to do. The girl asked about her hair and he says he doesnt know how long its going to take that its being tough. I get up and he says " oh wait , we are finishing up " ; its been 40 minutes and he just told the girl a few steps from me he had no idea how long it would take. He tried to get me to stay but I just said I had to put Quarters in the Meter and walked out. I came in because of the reviews but it doesn't seem he has it all together. He might give great haircuts but dont schedule someone and waste their time when they show up, I dont mind waiting a bit but with no idea the wait and places to be no thanks. 1. There is a Big dog they have roaming around inside so if you are allergic or afraid of dogs just throwing that out there. nice dog though. read more

I came to Boston on a business trip, my brother lives in Alston so; whilst visiting with my brother, I decided to get my hair cut. I called a few places around the area and they were rude and quick to get me off the phone. I call The Hair Design Center and was greeted with a warm inviting tone and they were able to fit me in right away. The owner was the one who worked on me. From the shampooing to the blow-dry this guy went above and beyond to make me feel welcome and comfortable. He even went as far as cleaning up my unruly back hair (I'm Italian) my boyfriend LOVES it!!!! Thank you so much for making me feel so welcome! I came here by chance - I had an appointment at Leeba, but there was a storm and they lost electricity, so they closed (without calling me, by the way). I was dying for a cut, so I ended up wandering around Allston-Brighton looking for a general hair salon (as opposed to a Korean, Brazilian, or otherwise specialty one) and finally found the Hair Design Center. The man who greeted me was clearly the owner, so I was too embarrassed to ask about prices (which weren't clearly posted) and just let him seat me. Sara, my stylist, turned out to be the sweetest, most talented stylist I've ever had! Not only was she a great conversationalist (I'm terrible in the cutting chair), but she is someone who clearly loves hair. She literally spent an hour and a half getting my layers exactly right and advising me on how to take better care of my hair. She wasn't condescending at all (I hadn't cut my hair in about two years, so I was expecting the worst) and gave me some ideas for future highlights. And, drumroll please...It came to only $40! You can't do a whole lot for $40 in Boston, especially for a whole hour and a half. The exterior is pretty shady looking, but the stylists here are top notch (my husband got his hair cut there the next week and was so excited when he came home, saying it was the first good&cheap cut he'd had since moving to Boston). read more

What can I really say about my experience here? First, they take the time to make sure they get everything right. I've never been a stickler for how my hair looks because I normally just shave it all off myself. I decided I needed to look good for a new job so I came in and they instantly treated me like an old friend. When they first started looking at my hair they could tell that it had been years since I got a hair cut. There were a few playful laughs and my naivety with hair and they asked me what I wanted to have done. I told them I would trust them the first time and see how it went. He carefully explained what he was going to do by trimming the sides and back and letting the top just a little longer because my hair is curly and it will give a more natural look than just being poofy. I stopped in here when I was desperate for a cut before a weekend full of baby and bridal showers (neither for me). The good: no wait. The bad: the price for what I got. The ugly: what I got. My hairstylest was friendly enough but she also made some very strange comments that made me uneasy. I asked for some non-choppy layers and ended up with a blunt cut plus a few pieces that were left a little too long and uneven (I hope that wasn't intentional and her idea of layers). Anyway, when I straighten my hair I look ridiculous. Going to get it fixed somewhere else ASAP. Avoid unless you wear your hair up every day. read more

Do not go here! I came in here for a basic haircut - a trim and some extra layers on my medium length hair. First of all, my stylist, Sara, has no idea how to gently handle hair... she dug her nails into my scalp during the wash. During the blow dry, I felt like she was ripping out my hair with whatever comb she was using. Also, even though I pointed it out that she had cut my hair shorter on one side than on the other, she did not fix it. I had asked for layers, but my hair was cut pretty much straight across. After scouring the city for the perfect cut, I finally found refuge at the Hair Design Center at the corner of Commonwealth Ave and Harvard Ave in Allston, MA. Not only was my hairdresser, Frank, exceptional at his craft, he also took the time to find out what I actually was looking for in my haircut and did not cease until that goal was accomplished. The haircut was also cost MUCH less than I had anticipated and almost felt as if I was committing highway robbery for the quality! Also, on a personal level, Frank made the experience enjoyable by striking up great conversation to the point where I actually found myself confiding in him as if he were an old friend!
