This is the best salon I've ever been to. Prices are affordable for the quality of services I have had done. Color , highlights were above and beyond my expectations. This is the only place in town I would ever recommend. Everyone is super friendly and knowledgeable in hair. There is even a matrix educator that works here. $10 haircut for men. This is the only haircut place in Tazewell and New Tazewell I believe (it's right by the wal greens). Everyone who comes here makes an appointment, so try to make one before you come (especially weekends). The barbers are really really nice but they are hit or miss, either you will get a descent haircut or you will get a semi-descent haircut. Their capes they put around you are horrible though, all the hair went down on my neck and under my shirt, I got so itchy that I couldn't sit still! They don't even wrap paper towel around your neck...and the barbers are so nice I didn't want to be rude. Also, if you're going to tip, don't just hand a $5 bill over and expect them to give you 5 singles, she took it and put it straight in her pocket. It would have been weird to ask for it back so I just left it (but learned my lesson). The only real issue I had is that they are really slow cutting your hair. Bernice is great and the staff seems experienced. I am bald so I only go there to get my beard trimmed but it always looks good when Melissa trims it. She puts some kind of cream on it for about a minute but it makes the yellowing gray white again. read more

This is maybe my second review ever and I feel like a jerk for even posting this but people really deserve to get an accurate representation of an establishment, in my opinion. It started poorly on the phone when I was trying to make an appointment. I was hoping to get an appointment for color the next day, a Friday. That's pretty hard for any salon to swing but I figured I'd take my chance. The woman that was given the phone abruptly told me to call another number to schedule my appointment with someone who could "maybe do next Tuesday." I thought it was a little odd to provide me with someone's personal cell phone number to set an appointment at the same establishment I was just on the phone with but I rolled with it and called the stylist and set up an appointment for that Tuesday at 4pm. When I arrived on time at 4pm, my stylist was still cutting someone's hair. No biggie, I was fine waiting until she finished. It got to about 4:30 and I was getting restless. No one came to update me on time or progress of the other man's cut but I checked out their selection of second-hand clothes they had for sale in their "waiting area." At about 4:45, my stylist waved me over and I sat down at her station. I showed her a picture of what I was looking for (a grey/blue balayage with dark brownish/grey roots). She barely looked at it before being pulled away by her son. I fully support working moms but this got out of hand. He walked up to her and was clearly needing to go number 2. She slowly led him to the toilet and just sort of left me there with a sideways apology. They came back around at about 5:15 and before I knew it I was trapped. She began slathering on some color on my roots haphazardly while simultaneously chastising her son from across the room. Halfway through laying my scalp color, she stopped to teach him how to fold towels so he could "help her." Cute right? I thought so too until he kept needing help and at this point, my scalp is kinda burning. In between all of this, my stylist answered her phone multiple times and texted throughout the entire process. Her "assistant" had to help her when she randomly had a gushing nose bleed. Her assistant was a student at the beauty school. She clearly did not know what she was doing as my stylist was coaching her heavily through the process while she held kleenex in her dripping nose. Her nose finally stopped bleeding and she finished putting my color on around 6:30. She told me to change seats and sit in another styling station so she could sit at her's. She then proceeded to doll herself up and do her own hair. The entire time she and the other staff inside the building began gossiping about people in the community. The "assistant" told all of us all about her substance abusing mother. They discussed some poor girl's suicide. It really made me sick. And the level of unprofessionalism made the last part of this experience borderline unbearable. I was finally ready to wash out my-at this point- smoking scalp. My stylist began washing my hair and again had to stop because a wound from where she "cut out a chunk of her finger with scissors the other day" was bleeding profusely. Again. Her assistant came to save the day and helped wash out my hair while my stylist tried to glue her skin flap together with nail glue. After all the stuff was washed out and her skin flap was safely glued, she moved me back to her station where she revealed the literal OPPOSITE of what I requested. Now I understand, bleaching to allow for a grey color on top is a process. But my hair goes from a dark chestnut brown at the roots to a tobacco stained yellow in the middle and pure white/green at the ends of my hair. I was appalled at the disgusting combinations. It felt like her first time doing this, seriously. I was so close to crying after she dried it that I quickly said "no" to her styling me, paid her and left before I could look in the mirror any more. I would not recommend this establishment to anyone. I know there's not a lot of options around here but come on dude. A little bit of professionalism and expertise goes a long way. Mary Lay at Hair Etc. is an excellent stylist that has cut my hair just the way I tell her to. She is very sweet. If you are looking for a stylist that does want you want the way you want she is the stylist for you. Make an appt with her today. 423-626-1600 you won't regret it. read more

This place is always busy but since Dustie is gone so am I. She was the only one in there that I would let touch my hair.
