Jayd was a fantastic hairstylist. After moving to Madison, I never had a consistent stylist and bounced around from The Barbershop Hair Salon for Men and great clips. This place clearly knows what they're doing and they know exactly what their clients want. I didn't ask for a super complex haircut but I allowed my hairstylist to take some freedom with it and she did it perfectly. They wash your hair after and put high quality products in there to keep your hair soft and luscious. Will be returning next month for sure. read more

Hair Forum is a fantastic place to get haircuts in downtown Madison between UW's campus and the Capitol.

Let me first say, that this place is awesome. Everyone is very friendly, their level of professionalism is surprising, seeing as it is located in Madison. I'm also the type of guy who is obsessed about his hair, so trust me when I say that they know what they're doing. I have been going here for over 3 years, and have never been disappointed, except..... don't let Erin cut your hair. I'm not sure if that's her exact name, but she is relatively short, older (about 40-50 years old), a bit wider than the average person and uses a cane and has blue hair. I often get haircuts without scheduling a time, so I normally get the first available person, which normally turns out to be her. At first I thought this was a coincidence, but then after giving her 4 chances to get a simple haircut right (longer on top, shorter on the sides), she has failed every time. She would miss patches of hair, she would start off doing the wrong haircut and then have to correct her mistakes, or she would cut much shorter than I asked. I have given her way too many chances! Always avoid her by any means. If she is the only one available, leave and schedule an appointment. So in summary, this place is great, this is the best place in Madison. But by all means, AVOID ERIN! read more

As with all my reviews, quality and customer service always make the difference. Although the owner, Dan, maybe looks atypical of most salon owners, he really knows what he is doing. He is meticulous about details and I could always count on him to get exactly what I wanted for a haircut. I even went back there to get my haircut before my wedding. He's also a very interesting guy with great ideas and lots of stories. He cut my hair for a majority of my college years. I tried out most places on campus (except for the ones that charged ridiculous prices), but after finding Hair Forum I was hooked - Great service, great cut, at a reasonable price. They also offer loyalty discounts. Although I've been back there a few times over the last few years - what really impressed me while I was back last weekend was he recognized my name before I got there, and when I sat down in the chair - he remembered EXACTLY what my standard haircut was. Now that, is a master of his craft! I also find the decor interesting. They always have plenty of magazines, too for those who are waiting. DO NOT GO HERE I have never experienced a worse haircut in my life. Asked Alia for slight trim and ended up with inches off and horrible layers. The layers are so choppy it looks like it was cut with an axe. They do not blend at all, I can completely separate my hair into different sections by layer. I will have to wear my hair up until it grows out it is so bad. She did not wash or style my hair. Told her I had an important event coming up and my hair is completely ruined. This girl should have her scissors taken away. Alia also brought up very inappropriate topics. Will never go back or recommend this place to anyone. Only one good guy there. read more

I think Tabitha needs to take over. I went in for a blow out & was less than impressed by the salon. It was by far the dirtiest I've ever been in; I'm talking clumps of hair all over the floor, in the sink & even stuck on the wall. I'd never heard of more than half of the products they had on their stations. Aveda pictures on the walls but I saw no Aveda products. The straightener used on my hair looked like one I had in middle school. How did I look when I left? Not like I was walking out of a salon. Maybe the end result is great for some people (especially for the price) but it wasn't for me. Do not come here expecting a spa-like experience. read more

I never thought I'd give a hair salon five stars but then again I never thought the perfect cut was anything more than an urban legend. Until I met Tiffany. And she's changed my whole perspective. I was able to squeeze in a first last minute appointment on a Friday evening. I arrived a few minutes early and she was already ready for me. Our consult was short and effective--I just wanted a trim, bangs, and more shape (my last haircut resulted in awful heavy layers). I have long, thick black hair and I'm very particular because not only was I voted best hair 3 years in a row in high school, but my texture is also a little different (I'm Asian). Conversing with Tiffany was great. That may have been my favorite part. I had my hair shampooed and conditioned, cut and styled. The end result: my side bangs hit at just the right spot, my layers are absolutely perfect, and I was deliriously happy. I'm not big on paying big bucks for a haircut (I don't care what people say!). The whole session was for $25--a great deal don't you think? She had another customer otherwise she would've curled my hair quick for me too. If you decide to go here, do NOT let Lisa cut your hair. She's absolutely HORRIBLE. My sister went to Hair Forum for the first time yesterday, and I tagged along for support. My sister has thick black hair. Being Asian, she has found it difficult to find a good hair salon in Madison... so she thought she'd try this out. When we first walked in, we were greeted by Lisa at the front reception desk. She didn't seem very friendly. Since all the other hair stylists were busy, she said she'd cut my sister's hair. During the beginning consult, my sister wasn't sure what hair style she wanted. Her hair reached mid-back, and she wanted a dramatic chin-length cut but something easy to maintain. Lastly, she was very specific with the following: feathery cut at the ends (shaggy look), layers, and some thinning out. Lisa said she would cut it short in the back and long in the front. I asked if it would be like the Victoria Beckham style. She reluctantly said, "kind of." She wasn't very accommodating. She gave me a chair across the aisle, and I wasn't sitting anywhere near my sister. The overall haircut took 30 minutes, including the hair washing and blow-drying. This is disappointing because it really should've taken at least an hour. My sister said, "Wow, that was quick." Lisa's response: "That's because I'm that good. I've been doing this for a long time." She even mentioned that she has 12 years of experience -- yeah right! As the end result, my sister had a straight cut and NO layers. Her hair was thicker than it was; it was almost like a big mushroom cut. Additionally, the fronts ends were the same length as the back -- what happened to the "inverted bob" look that was promised?!! My sister and I wanted to complain, but Lisa chopped off nearly 1 foot of hair; we didn't want her fixing it and messing up more. As we were walking up to the front desk, one of the guy hairdressers looked at my sister's hairdo and was appalled. His facial expression was, "Are you serious?" From reading the other reviews, it seems like this is the only one of Lisa. However, if I can help someone avoid a bad experience, I hope this helps! read more

I went to Tiffany after reading rave reviews about her on yelp - and to be fair, she did an EXCELLENT job. My hair cut and color are amazing and was moderately priced. Unfortunately, I was less impressed by Hair Forum. When I got there one of the receptionists was sitting on the couch texting, while another was slumped at the desk slurping some Starbucks creation. The floor was dirty (you could also see where they swept AROUND rugs and pieces of furniture) and the walls were dirty/stained from getting splashed with hair dye and not getting wiped up.But the worst was when I got back to Tiffany's station there were clumps of hair in the corners and stuck to the bottom of the chair. And I'm not talking about a few stray hairs the broom missed - I mean actual CLUMPS of hair! It was disgusting. I'd give Tiffany 5 stars - but you have to be able to keep your eyes closed to the mess around you to go to her! read more

I called the morning of desperate for a haircut as I had gotten a horrific cut somewhere else the night before. They immediately got me an appointment that morning and calmed by deepest hair fears. My first hair cut was uneven and about 6 inches shorter than I wanted. Nikki seemed to already know what I needed, she evened it out and kept it as long as possible. She took an absolutely horrible haircut and I left loving my hair. She was also incredibly charismatic and kind, I felt like I was talking to a friend who was just really, really good with hair. This place is great. Tiffany is my personal fave. She is a highlight pro and friendly-just talkative enough. They typically have time for walk-ins which is nice, but if you want a particular stylist, call ahead. Prices are about on par with other salons (maybe a tiny bit cheaper), the employees are friendly, and it is conveniently located on campus for the college crowd. read more

I came in after going to a place and getting my hair butchered. Literally, it was uneven and it got longer towards the back where it just dropped off to less than half it's length. Dan did a freaking awesome job at fixing the mess on my head. He evened it out while still giving it the shape I originally wanted. The original stylist I went to at Hair Forum left but Dan, the owner, matched me with Samantha and I've been going to her religiously for months now. She works with me to figure out how to make this style look it's best. I walk out looking great every time! I've been going to so many hair salons in Madison and Stoughton area, hoping that I would just have a luck to find the best hair stylist, I gave this one a try base on the Yelp reviews, but still did not have a good luck, The color and cut is just so so, lady cut my hair was Lisa, I showed the picture of Victoria Beckham asymetrical haircut, but the lady just did not pay enough attention to the details of the style. She had the water way to hot when she was rinsing my hair, I wanted to walk out of there right away but She's good conversationalist, so I wanted to still give her a fair judgement, biggest mistake on my part, She cut the back short, long front but not enough textures and layers, I watched some u tube tutorials how asymetrical cut is done. But her techniques is just what you'll consider a beginner . So many salons I've been and I do ask first if they have done a asymetrical cut, all of them says yes, but ended up not liking the end results. I Paid $102.00 for cut, style and color. Did not give a tip, it is way over price as it is, Not worth the money, not worth coming back. It was only a Cost Cutter cut that I have, lesson learned. To anyone out there have had a asymetrical/ pixie haircut done with a very high skilled stylist and love it, please give me a recommendation.! read more

I should have known that if I called a hair salon and needed a quick appointment that I shouldn't go to the person who had two appointments open in the next hour. Then when I walked in and it smelled like an old dirty apartment I should have just walked out and found someplace with enough sense to have a clean business. Instead, I waited for a half hour to get my hair cut like a 12 year old in 1995. I was growing my hair out and told the stylist that and that I wanted to keep it longer. But, instead of doing that she thought I would like the majority of it chopped off. Seriously, I could have done this with clippers in ten minutes. You expect a stylist to take a moment to think about what would look best but she just started chopping. Also, horrible at conversation. She did not even trim my sideburns. I can't imagine that she thought this looked like a good haircut. And, if for some reason she did, she needs to think about finding a new job because she's not very good at that one. To start off, this is my first time going to this place. I can't say that every single person working here is as bad as the person I got but I will say that if I could give this place negative stars, I would. I am an Asian male with hair that gets difficult to manage when shorter than 2 inches. Thus, I notified her before starting. Furthermore, I already had in mind what kind of haircut I wanted (it was a very simple and reasonable short cut) and brought in photos from every angle so as to ensure I would get something resembling it. However, the result was abysmal to say the least. How the actual **** do you cut something that not only does not resemble the photo one BIT, but also look terrible no matter how you style it? I can HONESTLY say that this is, by FAR, the WORST haircut I have ever had in my entire LIFE (within memory). I have literally been robbed by getting my haircut here. If you ever do happen to go here, steer CLEAR of Nikki. Terrible service, zero conversation, abysmal hair cutting skills. For me, this has only served to teach me that I have yet to find even one person in Madison who can cut hair properly. Now I have to wait god knows how long for my hair to grow out of this terrible cut. read more
