Had the best experience with Gen! She is super friendly, indulged my need to be super chatty (even with masks!) She listened to what I wanted, even when I wasn't all that sure, and the cut was fantastic. I have really long, thick, curly hair and Gen not only cut it incredibly well, but super fast! I've been consistently happy with my haircuts here and have fun talking to the staff. Be warned: even though you can pay for your haircut with a credit card, you must tip in cash. Booked a blow-out online for a Birthday treat..received the confirmation and started to look forward. Later that day a surly woman from the shop called and told me their stylist had 'jammed her thumb' and would I be willing to take an appointment a day later than the one I had booked. I asked if I could possibly just head in that day to receive the 25 minute service. The woman said they were booked. So, I agreed to rescheduling and looked forward again. The day before the new appt. same woman same surliness,same issue. The stylist thumb was still jammed apparently and we would have to cancel..again.This time there was no offer of another appointment in a couple more days. I said I understood and would they kindly just assign me to another stylist for the blow-out as now I had changed my schedule for the second time and really just wanted to get it done. Surely a co-worker could help me out with their speediest service. Guess again..the woman let me know her hands were tied and offered no alternative solution..hmmm, I let her know I thought that was a poor business move and ended the call. I was disappointed that now it was almost the end of the week, she called me after 4pm and I probably wouldnt have much luck finding an appointment elsewhere. Also someone couldnt jump behind their chair and give me the service in order to help out their co-worker. Doesnt seem like the type of thing you would want to be know for? Where's the teamwork Cha-Chas? To top it all off when I drove by not 10 minutes later, I am staying at a hotel near by, I looked in the window to see two stylists one leaning one sweeping..seems like they could have had me in right then to keep a customer. I'll start by stating the truth: I freak the hell out about my hair. I range from loving my unmanageable locks, to needing a drastic cut on the spot. With this sudden change in state of mind, I need a barber almost on hand to satisfy me. Unfortunately I don't have an entourage to please my every potentially hazardous(to those around me) wim, so I often settle for whatever salon is available the moment I call. This has led me astray from Cha Cha quite often. They're a busy little shop. But today, after a long look in the mirror, I dialed them up and was thrilled to hear they had a cancellation and I was to be fit in. My barber was Brandon, who has been working with Cha Cha for 8 years, and knows his shit. Brandon was extremely informative about my hair, and there was a certain excitement in his craft that was refreshing and honestly relaxing for someone like me, who often hides from the world after a cut until it grows out quite a bit. I walked out of Cha Cha feeling comfortable with the way my hair looks. That's saying something coming from someone like me. Prices are reasonable. Staff encouraging and knowledgable. I finally went to Cha Cha to see Robyn, who was recommended to me by a previous stylist as being a whiz at women's short hair, and she was right! Robyn was warm, friendly, welcoming and a very talented stylist! Since it was my first visit, she really wanted to know about my hair, what I like and don't like, what had been done to it previously. You definitely don't get that attention at the chain "salons." I like that they have their own lot, sometimes parking on Willy can be a pain. I was, however, confused by the location of the front door, it's actually best to enter from the lot than the street side; both work, but the desk is toward the lot. A slight change in layout would make things clearer, and could also benefit from more seating. I do like the atmosphere and artwork. Good music selection, too. I was a little surprised to see some kids in there,but seems to fit with the hippie-family vibe of the area. $50 for a haircut was more than I am used to paying, but well worth it as I feel fabulous! read more

Can't believe I never reviewed this--I've been going to Cha Cha since 2004, with a year-long break when I was out of town. When I got back after my absence, I was very disappointed to discover that Janet was gone, but I couldn't be happier with Gen doing my hair! I keep my hair in various shades of hot pink, red, and orange, with a fairly funky/spiky style, but Gen also cuts the hair of two other grad students of my acquaintance who are much more conservative in their hair choices, and she makes them look great, too. She's very good about giving people what THEY want, whatever that might be, but she also always has input of her own to pin down a vague idea I might have into something that looks awesome on my actual head. Seriously, I think the worst thing about actually graduating and leaving Madison will be having to find someone to replace Gen. read more

Both places feel like the kind of joint that can craft a pink mohawk as well as a straightforward bob (I'm on the bob end of the spectrum). I described my hair to the woman who answered the phone (curly, thick) and she hooked me up with Alice. Alice, who promptly gave me the best haircut I have ever had in my life. I swear, no hyperbole. And every haircut since has been that good. If not better. In fact, I have started attributing all the good things that have happened to me since I moved to Madison to Alice and her haircuts. There is no pretentiousness here. The entire staff at Cha Cha's is extremely friendly and everyone takes the time to make sure you are getting both the cut you want and one that will actually look good on you rather than just giving you a mechanical haircut. The staff has range of experience and the cost of the cut is equal to that so check their website to see who you'd want an appointment with if you are on a budget. The cuts can go from $60 to $20 to $5 and I've had my hair cut by Rick several times and never has a $5 haircut looked better. Just remember to tip! Oh and on Fridays they have what they call the Buzz Club from 7p-11pm which offers discounted haircuts for men on a first come first served basis. read more

Old beautiful building houses this fantastic place. I love everything designing detail inside. The bowls are free standing so the person can get around every nook without reaching over the customer's face. My husband did the "noshave" November, and had a lot of hair to remove (he usually is bald and has a goatee....nothing else). We needed the help of a barber and a straight razor shave was going to be the best way to get rid of the hair without clogging up our drains. It took over an hour to get through all the hair, and the barber did a great job (I lost the business card so I can't remember his name) but we still had to get that closer finish at home with our regular 5 blade razor. Since my husband has never had a straight razor shave, we aren't sure if this is common or if it was just not as close as it could be. We were charged $65 for removal of hair on the head and the sides of his beard. This place was also having a small fundraiser for the Humane Society, where you could purchase a package and the proceeds were donated. Not a bad deal. Also, during my wait, I saw two people come in and purchase specialty hair care products. Check it out if you're looking to try something different. read more

Jason @ Cha Cha is the only person who has ever tamed it. i trust him completely-- he's just a doll. when my boyfriend (who used to keep his head shaved) needed his first hair cut in a decade, of course i sent him to Cha Cha! for such an occasion i spoiled him and ordered a straight razor cut to go with his trim. Courtney took good care of him-- he loved it and i couldn't believe how cheap it was! now we both are Cha Cha fans. as long as Jason's around i'll never go anywhere else. my only complaint seems to be a common one-- you can't tip on a card payment. it can be really irritating, since i'm really forgetful and of COURSE i want to leave a tip for a job well done. i hope these reviews convince them to change that. read more

I always get my haircut by Gen at Cha Cha. It always turns out great, and the overall experience is very pleasant. I used to go to their location by the square, and I think the Willy St location is even nicer. I used to think $30 for a basic men's haircut was expensive, but it's really worth it. No clipper jobs here. All scissors, and interesting techniques to make boring straight hair have more texture. read more

Of course maybe it's unfair to rate an establishment based on the talent of one individual, but based on the shave experience I had with Rick I would never go to Cha Cha again. I went in for my first straight shave ever, as I decided to pamper myself a bit for our wedding, and I thought a baby-smooth face would be nice, and take away the stress of doing it myself and worrying about cutting myself. His control of the razor was unconvincing, and the amount of hair he left on me was ridiculous. I was left with patchy, non-clean-shaven areas, and some areas he missed entirely. I was thoroughly unimpressed with the fact that I had to go home and shave myself before my wedding after dropping a whopping $40 on a poor shave that was advertised as $35. I made an appt. for my boyfriend to get his haircut there since it's close and the website looked cool. We had to leave that afternoon for a wedding out-of-town. I did not accompany him to the haircut, which apparently was a big mistake. He asked to shorten the sides and leave it a little longer on top - not a seemingly unreasonable request. He ended up looking like he belonged in the Pet Shop Boys. I don't know when the "Flock of Seagulls" hairstyle came back in, but it looked terrible. Poor guy was so traumatized - he just wanted to get out of there. Ended up having to get it fixed so the excessively long hair on top wasn't tickling his chin. I would definitely avoid this place if you do not want to look like an 80's rocker. read more

I am always super nervous about haircuts: I have a lot of hair but it's also on the finer side, and wavy, so I have gotten some SUPER jacked-up cuts. So I was wary, but for no reason. Robyn is a freaking wizard, no two ways about it! She took the time to really listen to what I wanted and didn't want, and talk through the game plan with me. I had more than one negative service experience here - the first time I thought the stylist was having a bad day, but then I realized it was the culture to treat customers like dirt when they request more or ask for something the stylist doesn't want (based on hearing a conversation with another guest/stylist). The other time I asked for a color job that was common but she didn't feel like doing foils and sighed that it was going to take forever - even though I knew this and I specially booked extra time. The final straw was when I went in for a color and she had all the color on my hair - and realized only after applying it ALL it was the completely wrong formula - not a shade wrong but night/day opposite color wrong. She corrected it, didn't offer the salon to pay for mistake, (any other salon would do this) and pretended it was no big deal! My hair was like hay after all the triple processing. Overall they have a talented staff, but the customer service is lacking to the point of utter disappointment. read more

I was so frustrated I just let that crap grow and grow for many long months, til I had a shapeless, unmanageable mass. It finally got too ugly to ignore, so based on a suggestion from a friend, I went to see Gen yesterday for a cut. I'm so glad I did - she listened to what I wanted, encouraged me to show her pictures of hair that I liked, and really heard my concerns. She asked me questions about my hair texture, and I was so frickin delighted when she asked, "how do you feel about razor cuts?" I thought it was awesome that she was down to change up her plan based on my comfort level. In the end she gave me a sassy razor cut. Now I've got bomb hair and a new stylist. Woo hoo Gen! read more

this salon definitely does not specialize in curly hair! i have fairly curly thick hair and while i did not get my hair cut by alice (i've hear she knows curly hair), the stylist who did cut my hair did a horrible job and basically gave me the Rachel from 1995.
