Another small business that Covid took its toll on. But good news: Alex is now at 7th Heaven, at 51 Seventh Avenue South, on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Same phone number. Alex has been doing my cut and color for years and I am very happy. He creates the warmest neighborhood atmosphere, too. read more

I was looking for a new hair place, and saw this place on Yelp and decided to give it a whirl. I was extremely satisfied after I left and look forward to 'hopping' back. Basically I was met with extremely friendly service, and my appointment was right on time. It also had an extremely friendly vibe, and you get a sense you are really welcome there. It's also really cozy with good tunes. What can I say, the cut was very-well done and exactly what I was looking for. It also was a great value ($45) considering many places charge an arm and leg for a simple's men's haircut. read more

Alex, the owner is extremely friendly. While I was in there, all of the other customers had been coming to him for years. The newest customer besides myself had been coming for 2 years...the longest, 26 years!! It's a tiny joint with just three chairs. He had one other stylist, Ben who cut my hair. He did an average job which is why I only gave it 3 stars. I will probably go back because its very close to my place, but I will request an appointment with Alex. My husband has been getting his hair by Alex at Hair Hoppers for 28 years. I've been going for about 10 years, and I won't ever let anyone else touch my head! For the first time in my life, I LOVE MY HAIR! Alex found exactly the cut that gives my thinnish hair volume and movement. Also, going to him is such a treat; there's always lively conversation, lots of laughter, and a feeling of community and caring. Now I live up in Westchester but still come into the city for Alex. Plain and simple - the man knows his business. At first glance, the small salon looks like any other. Upon a closer look, you will realize it is nothing of the sort. Everyone is smiling and happy to be there. Alex is the reason. His personality and humor is quintessential new yorker, and he keeps the atmosphere light, but all the while he is masterfully cutting hair and keeping a watchful eye on the other goings on in the shop. I found him by chance over a decade ago and have not used anyone else since. Everyone's idea of a great haircut is different, but Hair Hoppers is more than worth giving a shot. read more

Great salon and wonderful atmosphere. Both Alex and Ben were extremely friendly, funny, and just great to be around. I went in there to have my hair color taken from dyed black to a medium brown. It was definitely time consuming, but not at one point during the 3 hour process did I feel like a problem or a bother to them. Sweet and attentive the whole time they did what would work best for my hair, and I loved the outcome. Would absolutely recommend to anyone looking for good quality and great service! read more

I have been going to Hair Hoppers for many moons now, and just love the haircuts and styling that Alex creates. Ben is also a lovely guy and a wonderful colorist and hair stylist! Be ready for lots of spontaneous and wicked humor as well. Love them both! Hairhoppers is located right in the heart of the Village on Grove Street, so after your session you can go for a great cappuccino at a nearby cafe or just browse the great shops! I was meandering around the West Village with little more than the intention of having my hair washed and thinned. I'm a guy that took the phrase, "the biggest mane always wins" a little too literally and while growing my hair to shoulder length it needed some major maintenance. I had a honeycomb of frizz that was a conversation starter for others and a nightmare for myself, especially this time of year. So walking down Grove st. Around 1pm I popped in to the shop and requested thinning shears and a wash. Now instead of just squeezing me in as a walkin, Alex asked me what I wanted to accomplish. I told him i wanted my hair more manageable as i grew it out. That every day was a battle that could very well end in a buzzcut out of frustration. My hair already choppy from having it thinned was being kept at bay with a chair and whip when what it really needed was the thorn extracted from its paw. A thick matty frizzy thorn. Alex suggested a chemical straightening process that took two treatments at roughly 15 minutes a piece. I'd never had that before, i gave him a thumbs up. I now have for the first time in my life have beautiful straight long hair. This will last for 3-4 months and was VERY reasonably priced. He and his talented assistant, Ben are both honest, hilarious and all around great people. The shops been there for almost 25 years and is a HIDDEN GEM in town. For some unknown reason, Yelp has removed many glowing reviews for Hair Hoppers and the owner Alex. God forbid I give a good review...but I will and here it is. Alex has been doing my cut and color for about eight months. He's very careful and doesn't rush the job. My highlights are superb. He's entirely restyled my look from very short and spiky to a sophisticated medium-length do that's super-easy to maintain. True he doesn't come cheap but I get what I pay for here. I couldn't be happier with Hair Hoppers. read more

I went here based on the reviews and unfortunately did not have the experience of the majority of the reviewers. To be fair the cut is decent. The rub was I have been to some very nice salons and for less and received a better cut. When I was shocked at the price for a simple trim I was met with "well, what were you expecting?" Well, for almost 2X in price: 1) a place where if I go into the bathroom and hang my bag on the hook it doesn't come flying out of the door/crashing to the (dirty) floor, 2) one where they offer me a glass of water or tea, 3) the floor is not covered in hair (swept between customers), 4) cleaner overall (capes, chairs, sinks), 5) no blowdry so I walked out with wet hair, 6) and one without attitude when a customer expresses their surprise. However, if overpaying​ to go to a place that is in a terrible state for an acceptable haircut is your jam then definitely go to Hair Hoppers. read more

I have had my hair cut by both Alex and Kevin and they are both impeccable. Go there ONCE and the second time you come back Alex will remember exactly how you cut your hair the last time, i guarantee it. Men's haircut is $40 and I think it's well worth it because both of them are highly experienced. I think if you pay anything less than that you probably have to go to barbershop kind of place. So glad I found good hairdressers here, because for some reason a man's haircut is so easy to screw up!!! read more

I have been going to Hair Hoppers forever -- since they were located in Carmine Street -- now the salon is on Grove St. already for many years.. My hair is very thick and time consuming to cut and style but Alex and Ben have done wonders with it. I also get my hair colored and always receive a lot of compliments on the color. I was in the market for a new place to get my haircut and chose Hair Hoppers because they were in my neighborhood and had been there quite some time, so I assumed they must know what they were doing. They did, and I was please with my hair. My low rating, however, comes from the fact that I had initially stopped by to get a price range and was told by Alex that it would be $130 to get my hair colored the way I wanted. I went back again, this time bringing along a friend who was interested in getting her hair colored as well, and asked the cost and was once again told it would be $130. Alex went even went as far as to ask me to take my hair down, run his fingers through it, and look at it outside in the natural light and once again told me it would cost $130 and I booked my appointment. So, you can imagine my suprise when I finished my hair done and he told me it would be $180, $50 more than he had quoted me 3 x previously! That may not be alout of money to some people, but it certainly is to me. I understand this is common in the hair salon business, but a person who has been in the profession for has long as he has should be able to give a more accurate quote. It really turned me off and made him seem phoney and insincere. The color was decent enough, but I would never go back. read more
