Hair Icon is the best barbershop in the valley. Every time I come here, my appointment is on time (sometimes the barber is even ready before me) and my cut comes out looking smooth! This is also a very affordable place too; I've never paid more than $20 for a haircut. They give better cuts than the more known shops that charge $30+ or 50+ ! On top of that, everybody is very friendly! Just a reminder though, THIS IS NOT SUPER CUTS. So do not expect a hostess to greet you at the door with a high five. The one-star review is really a reflection of my experience on bringing my son in last week. Every other time I've brought him here over the last year he's always gotten a good solid haircut. First off the customer service here is always a little rough around the edges, but I'm a single mom bringing my kid into a barbershop, that's kind of given. I saw that there was a girl in the shop and decided to give her a shot. Her name is AJ, and you need to avoid her at all costs. Not only did she give my son an uneven, unblended fade, she knicked the side of his head real good as well. When I tried saying she was messing up his head, she told me to calm down and she will fix it. Then threw an attitude with me at the end when I tried to get her to fix what little she could. She said, and I quote "If you wanted it done another way you should have said so in the beginning." I don't know if she was high or just wasn't listening, but hopefully management fixes this or reaches out to me so I can come back. read more

A friend recommended this place after I noticed his good haircut. He told me to make an appointment with "Dion" so I called and made an appointment for Friday. I asked how much the cuts were and was told $15. I walked in Friday evening to a very run down shop that smelled heavily of weed. I didn't mind so much because if you cut good hair, then we're fine. However, right off the bat I noticed none of the seven barbers in the shop greeted me. No one asked if I had an appointment or if I was a walk-in. I waited about twenty minutes as people shuffled through the shop and barbers took new clients and was still never greeted. Another 5 minutes went by and a barber walked by and said he had an open chair. I had an appointment with Dion but none of the barbers looked like they were going to be finishing up anytime soon so I took the chair. The haircut was ok but the barber charged me $20 instead of the $15 that was initially quoted over the phone. Overall, never got the appointment I made or the haircut I wanted. Not sure who this "Dion" was but he blended in fine with the rest of the unfriendly barbers. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. I'd love to support a local shop but this place is just dishonest and unfriendly. read more

Love this place... because they have that true original barber shop feeling like the ones you see at the movies. They have well trained barbers for every cut... get your hair did... while music bumping in the background. The staff is also excellent with great customer service! There's about 4 plus barbers on any given day. The customer based is pretty diverse. Plenty of parking in front. read more

Ive been coming here for about 10 years and it is getting worse and worse with every visit. Every time Dion isnt there the barbershop wreaks of weed and the barbers appear to be stoned out of their minds. Today i went in for a haircut and my barber was clearly on an altered state of mind and does not even follow sanitary procedures for cutting hair. He lined me uo dry with a straight razor and i had to ask him to sanitize me with alcohol. He literally left 2 lines on a hardline i had requested. This place is a joke. read more

I've been coming here for several years now. I don't know why they have such bad reviews, because I have never had any issues. I'm greeted every time I come in and Dion, the owner and my barber is fantastic! He's popular, so he's always busy unless you get there first thing in the morning. He also started my locks 2 years ago and has a woman who comes in to tighten them up for me every couple of months. Let me tell you a little story about a place called Hair Icon! They are a barber shop in Lake View Terrace, CA that predominately cuts black hair. I live in the West Valley (Woodland Hills) and have a regular barber that I go to over there, but when I am over on this side of town at my mothers house, I used to stop buy this barber shop to get a cut if I needed one and wasn't home. They have always been really "interesting" in how they do business. People are drinking liquor in the shop; and yes I am talking about the barbers. Barbers are going outside for a "break" and coming back in smelling like weed and not to mention people walking in off the street asking "Hey, do you want to buy some weed?". Now, I believe that you should probably make an appointment to get a hair cut in today's world, but at this place that is usually not the case. They don't really have people that call to make an appointment. You can usually walk right in and tell the barber that you need a cut and he will say "You're next". So, I walk in the door (now, this happened about 2 hours ago) and there were 2 barbers in the shop. There was a person in each chair and 1 person waiting in a chair. I walked over to the barber there and asked if the guy that I usually go to was there. He said that he wasn't and had not been there all day. I asked if he was able to do my hair. He said, "No... I am about to go on break and will be back in a few hours. You can ask the other barbers when they come back from lunch if they can help you..." Shocked, I just waited. The other barbers came back into the shop and he told them that I needed to get a cut. One took the young guy sitting down and then other just sat down and put in their head sets and did nothing. Furious, I just waited a while and then later left. I walked back into the shop about 10 minutes later after I had cooled down and the guy still sat in the seat and never addressed me or acknowledged me. I left again. I got in my car and called the shop. I asked for a managers / owners email address. The man that answered the phone said he was the manager and that there was no email address and that I would have to send something via mail. I hung the phone up. Listen people, if you don't mind going into a shop and being treated like you are shopping at Wal-Mart or the Swap Meet then you should have no problem. But if you want to be treated like a paying customer who has valuable time then you will NOT like this place. The environment is not good at all!!! The shop looks a mess and the area is OUTRAGEOUS! Call me "stuck up" but I believe that I should be treated like a customer, not like I OWE you! Please use caution before going here! You have been warned! And if I could give them 0 stars then you better believe that, that is what they would have gotten! read more

First off, Basics: Arrived: 11:30am Departed: 12:20ish Day: Monday Review coming from African American Male, student, 23yo, grad student Just as an FYI, This isn't my GO TO Barbershop. I usually go to In The Zone Barbershop in Granada Hills. But i went there and it was closed (should have checked the hours!) but since I was tired of my hairline, I decided to give the Hair Icon Barbershop a try especially since it's right down the street from my house and cuts the commute time to a barbershop to 5 minutes. At first glance, it doesn't look too inviting, but I decided to give it a chance since i was in a bad position of my regular barbershop being closed. When i walked into the barbershop, there were two barbers who were in the middle of giving cuts. Usually, when I'm at a barbershop a customer walks in, the barbers will atleast say "wassup" or "hows it going" but I didn't get that here. I walked in, took a look at the walls, sat down and waited my turn. About 5 minutes into my wait, there was a barber who was finishing his previous customer's hair cut. So I assumed, they know I'm here for a haircut. About 5 more minutes passed by, and I was asked by a barber, Jerome, if I wanted to get a cut. I found this strange because why else would I be in the barbershop to get a cut? I guess they have people who just leisurely sit there. But I brushed this off and hopped in the chair. Given my experience of some barbers not understanding what I want by me just telling them (some say I get a 1, where some say I get a low fade or a taper), I chose a picture of what I wanted on my smart phone and found something similar to it on their wall to give Jerome two references to glance at to see what I wanted. After I described what I wanted, he began to cut with the grain. I don't care about the grain unless I'm trying to get waves but i usually don't mind against the grain. But I wanted to see how it would go, it was too much hair for me, so I told Jerome to make it lower in which he told me that would be against the grain. I said no problem. He did it against the grain and showed me what it would look like to see if it was too low or just right. It was just right. He continued to do the cut. A couple minutes after, what I assume to be two other barbers came in the shop and started talking about having sex with female celebrities (Which is not uncommon for male barbershops) but when challenged by another barber about his sex history, my barber replied that he doesn't have any kids because the girls he has sex with "swallow his babies, rather than inhabit them" which was unprofessional in my eyes. He finished the cut and even lined up my mustache and my goatee which i really prefer my barber to do since I can't get it right. The cut cost 15 but I gave him a 5 dollar tip for his hard work. Overall, the cut is ok. It's not the best I've ever had, but it's definitely not the worst either! However, the service and the atmosphere is not great and a little bit too sexual for my taste. Jerome has got some techniques that my other barbers didn't have which I liked however, it's just not my scene. I definitely would go back again if I was ever in a bind like today, but it would be with some hesitation. read more

I stay away from this place. Making an appointment with Dion is a joke! I still had to wait, and charged extra for an appointment, really? Appointments are written on his mirror; spring for a calendar, dude. Once I finally made it to his chair, he had a full-on, non-stop conversation with some chick whose son was next in line, including pausing my cut to make his talking points. He barely spoke to me, so unprofessional, and he's supposed to be the owner. Also, his clippers pinched the back of my neck. Restroom was dark & had no paper towels. Please do better for your clients. Lastly, the first time I walked in, no one would consider serving me, guess the young Hispanic barbers are not skilled in working with black women. I think what people, all over in urban barbershops, need to understand is unless you have an appointment you have to be willing to wait. I don't care if you are young or old you have to wait. Getting a good quality hair cut, like the one you will get at hair icon, is a process. As far as people drinking and smoking that is their decision and as an adult they can do as they please. I have been going to Hair Icon since I was 11 when it was Platinum and its not a dangerous environment and I never felt uncomfortable. Barbers are and have always been pillars of the community because aside from a fresh cut they give life lessons and advice. There is no need to bash someone's craft because of a long wait. If you don't want to wait pay that extra cash and skip the line it's as easy as that. Let's be mindful that this is a place of service and if they aren't here that just means more heads that will be at whatever shop you decide to go to. read more
