Haven't even gone in here, probably never will now as I was just treated with supreme disrespect by some window washer cleaning their windows. Parked in the only spot in a parking lot spot because my blood sugar was low and I needed to run into Whole Foods for 2 minutes. Store was empty, the Guy told me I was rude instead of suggesting I should move or asking why I decided to park there if I wasn't using the business. His car was parked in a customer parking spot too despite his being there to wash windows. Another not welcoming business in Sebastopol. My hair isn't super complicated, but it's not super simple either; it's very curly and, left to itself, tends to stick out in a sort of a big Doc Brown do. I remember going to this place about 10 years ago and wasn't too impressed. I had asked for layers and only received one awkward looking little shelf towards the tips of my hair. Well, I have an event to attend soon and I'm looking pretty scruffy. I could really use a cut, so while passing Hair Masters today, I decided to drop in and inquire about their prices. After all, everyone deserves a second chance, right? In this case, wrong. Despite being biologically female, I always get a men's haircut but was quickly informed by one of the stylists working that I would still be charged the women's price of $40. That is a whopping $15 difference. Apparently this is because women's hair always takes longer. But I had not asked about a *women's* haircut, damn it; I wanted a *men's* haircut. So why in the world would that take longer and cost more? I wasn't even asked what specific cut I wanted; for all they knew, I might have been there for a buzz. At that point the owner came over and basically repeated what her associate had said: that since women's hair takes longer, it would cost me $15 more. Then she remarked in a rather snarky tone that it didn't *look* like I had a men's haircut. Well, no... it has been months since I've been able to afford a haircut, and this is almost entirely because of narrow minded people like herself who insist upon taxing me for having been born with the wrong bits and pieces. I've known Annette for 10+ years (I went to school with her daughter) and it is always a pleasure to see her and catch up on life. I've recently been wearing my hair naturally curly (Curly Girl Method) and Annette was so kind to allow me to use my own shampoo/conditioner and hair stylers for the appointment (although she uses very clean, natural products anyway)! She was extremely knowledgeable about curly hair and I'm so happy with my hair cut! Highly recommend her to anyone. First visit: My son got a great haircut from Annette. She was warm and sweet with my four year-old. Laura was friendly and accommodating. Then I made an appointment for both my kids because we had such a great first experience. I had to reschedule 2X because one kid and then the other had (a) a wicked cough and (b) a stomach virus. I try not to take my kids out if they're hacking or a shade of green. The first time I called five days prior to reschedule. The next time I called four days ahead. When I called the second time Annette chastised me for canceling, saying, "Haven't you cancelled four time already?" She told me she was very busy, etc. I'm so disappointed as I was thrilled to have a local place to take my kids. I would recommend if you never have the misfortune of having to cancel or if you don't mind a dose of New York discourtesy. Otherwise watch out for the friendly, sweet side of Annette to disappear only to be replaced with a lack of filter and a stern Mother Superior persona. I stood there for about 30 seconds before she said, Can I help you. I asked if I could get a haircut. She said that they were too busy for a walk in. Very disappointed that she cashed my check after seeing the finished product. I even said it wasn't fair to charge me! I've had nothing but great haircuts here. The way I wear my hair is not super complicated, no fades, coloring, dreads, cornrows, strategically coiffed comb overs to camouflage annoying bald spots. It's generally a short back and sides with a front part short enough to not hang in my eyes. But like anyone else, I like it when it looks good and I'm SUPER grateful when the person cutting my hair also cares about how it looks. Went here for the first time back in early January. Explained that I like my hair long and layered. Kinda stuck in the 90's but whatever. The haircut was okay. At least she kept it long and it did have some layers. Can say I didn't hate it anyway. So I decided I would give it one more try. So a week ago I started calling to get an appointment and got nothing but the answering machine three to four times a day everyday till Thursday when on what was going to be my last attempt I got an actual person. Now I didn't leave any messages do to my line of work where I am in and out of the truck all day dealing with customers and can't always get to a phone. So I somewhat understand where they are coming from but they are in one location so.... Anyway went in and met again with the VERY nice ladies here. Went over the whole long layered thing yet again. What I got was the shortest haircut I have had in more than forty years. Not sure how it will grow out but I know I shouldn't need it cut for three or four month compared to the normal six weeks. Vey nice ladies but more than safe to say I will NOT be going back. read more

Annette rules! I have been going to Hair Masters since...umm...the beginning of this century and I have never been less than completely satisfied. As for "the dose of New York discourtesy" that S.R refers to well, yes, in fact Annette is a REAL GENUINE HUMAN BEING. As such, on occasion she has the audacity to exhibit the full range of human emotions that to some of us Left Coasters could be construed to be somehow curt or rude. To y'all of this persuasion I say this-GROW UP. Part of the gig of supporting local business is supporting local people who unlike their monster corporate breathen(Starbucks,Supercuts and the like)are not following a script, so one visit followed by two cancellations(regardless of YOUR reason)could be a wee bit upsetting to a person running a small business that relies on,wait for it,appointments. Annette has done my hair for almost 10 yrs now, and the cut and color always looks great. She also did a fabulous fix-it job when my daughter cut her ponytail off when she was 4yrs old! As well, she's been very generous in giving me samples and good rates for color jobs, since she knows I'm a single parent on a tight budget. Annette is the most fantastic hair stylist I've ever had! She made sure that I got exactly what I wanted! I hate when I got to salons and tell a stylist what I want and they give me what they think I should have, Annette listened to me and asked me questions throughout the hair cut and color to make 100% certain I would get the results I wanted.
