This review will probably take me as long as it took to get my haircut this morning. I was looking to get a quick trim and didn't want to endure the long lines of SuperCuts. So after a search on Yelp, I discovered Hair N' Joy in Mill Valley. I drove down to their Miller Street location. Easy (free) parking right in front. Walked in. Nobody else was there. The friendly barber sat me in a chair right away and got to work. 10 minutes and $20 later my head was completely shaved and I was out the door. Easy peasy. I'm totally coming back here for future cuts!

Down to earth and talented. Wonderful. In the midst of a desert of high-end hair salons.

My husband has been getting his hair cut by Mai at Hair-N-Joy for years, and she gives the best haircut, all for $20.

Fantastic salon! I've been going to Jess for waxing for a dozen years and to Caitlin for haircuts…read morefor about two years. Both do amazing work. Front desk staff is highly professional and friendly and the salon is always immaculate. I am almost always able to get the time slot I need for back-to-back appointments with them, and the best part is they never, ever run late. I don't live in Mill Valley and I'm very busy with work, and I cannot stand it when I drive for half an hour to get to an appointment and the stylist is running half an hour late. This never happens at Milvali. They have a wide variety of high-quality products for sale but they don't push product. They always offer coffee or water, and they have little treats in the rooms. It's a friendly, community- and customer-oriented professional salon with a positive energy and friendly staff. Which is why they're very busy.

Milvali salon feels more like a assembly line chop shop vs high end salon experience. I've had two…read moreservices here and both fell short. I had a haircut here, which I ended up waiting for the stylist for over an hour. When she finally saw me she said it was bc some scraggly haired woman with her extensions came in last minute demanding she fix her hair, and so she spent hours re bonding (or whatever the term is?) the hair. I'm not trying to be mean here, but the woman had very fine blonde hair that was bob length and got hair down to her waist. My aside here is ...ladies...can we just love what we have and maybe do any enhancements in moderation instead of totally going overboard with the extensions down to our tushies?! And, yes, I was rightfully upset bc I had an appt and this woman did not, yet I had to wait for my scheduled service?? Totally doesn't make sense. The kicker was when I told the stylist she should have rescheduled me if she was going to be so late, and her response was that she didn't want to lose another customer that day. Welp, she definitely lost me as a customer, because I'd never go back to her. The cut was okay but overall a mind boggling experience and a waste of my time. The other experience I had was getting a facial from an aesthetician. I specifically let her know I didn't want any animal tested or animal products on my skin. And yet, she slapped collagen on my face (and it wasn't marine collagen). She also didn't do any arm or neck massage, which is odd because with all the facials I've had at other places, I've always had a light massage while a mask is on my face. When I asked about the massage, the aesthetician said she leaves the room while my mask is on vs doing a massage. Additionally, she kept using the term "anti-aging", despite me sharing that I'm not against what natural process happens to us all, and I don't like language that makes us hate a natural process. I think (especially in a spa or salon setting) there are far more positive terms we can use to describe caring for our skin. Rejuvenating, refreshing, aging with grace, naturally enhancing...sounds far more from a place of love and acceptance for ourselves than "anti-aging". From both of these less than par experiences, my take away was that I was in a low caliber salon, and not a specialized, leveled up establishment. It's been a year and I haven't returned, nor would I recommend this place to others.

I arrived with an absolute emergency of a mess, a cut off all your hair, how did I get here, MESS. Major chemical/product damage, it was not viable. I was fully resigned to a short bob for a complete restart, but she was able to use her skill to come up with what she called a "custom haircut" and that's exactly what it was. Where the texture was once straw/sandpaper, is now silk. I cannot recommend Susan enough! If she can make sunshine come out of THIS experience, I can only imagine what she is capable of working with other clients. It was very kind of all the ladies in the salon to come and give their recommendations as well, I really felt like everyone came together and saved what they could of my hair! It feels amazing today and I am so incredibly grateful. Thank you Susan, you are a gem and I will recommend you to all those who are looking for an exceptional hair artist. I'll see you next time!!

There are so many great shops, cafés, and places to wander before or after an appointment. Pros: Online Booking - Super easy and convenient. Salon Atmosphere - Clean, modern, stylish, and welcoming. Haircut Skill - Very good! I was happy with my haircut. Con: Stylist Tone - The only reason I'm not giving five stars is my experience with Susan's communication style. While talking with a coworker, she used the word "retarded" to describe a TV show episode she didn't like. I understand she wasn't directing it at a person and had no way of knowing that I have a child with disabilities, but it's a word that's difficult for me to hear. Others may feel differently, and I'm not suggesting there was any ill intent. It simply left me feeling that we weren't the right fit. There were also a few comments that came across as dismissive or condescending, though I don't think that was the intention. For example, when discussing the condition of my hair, the delivery felt more like a scolding than guidance. As the saying goes, it's not always what you say, but how you say it. Overall, I found her communication style sharper and more pompous than I personally prefer, and I tend to gravitate toward a warmer, more down-to-earth vibe. To be clear, this is not a criticism of Susan's technical skills. She gave me a great haircut, and I genuinely love the result. For me, it was simply a matter of communication style and personal fit. Overall, I would absolutely return to the salon but with a different stylist and recommend it because the con is very much a personal preference thing, nothing related to the skill or salon environment itself.
