The review is about the reservation system. Basically you can only book by calling day of. As soon as you call, you are out on hold...sometimes up to 30 minutes. So many better ways to do this; there are online appointment services that can do a much better job than this. Please guys, fix your system! I just came from The Shop where I went to get a blow dry. My hair is shoulder length and I had washed my hair prior to arrival. It took maybe 12 minutes at the most. My stylist said my hair wouldn't cooperate in curling under at the bottom. No one has ever had this "problem" before. The 12 minute job was charged at $65. When I asked for an adjustment I was told by the person in charge that she didn't have the authority to do so. When I got home I noticed that my hair was still damp. Now it won't be the smooth look I needed. The last time I was there it cost $50 for shampoo and blow dry and it looked great (ends curled under). I do not recommend this place. This review is specifically for Daniel. I've seen him I believe 4 times and thought I had found my new barber. Unfortunately I found out today, 5/24/24 that his last day is tomorrow 5/25. He has recommended a new person to do my hair and I trust his suggestion so I will continue to come here, for now. The customer service is fantastic. The receptionists are organized, polite and friendly. Daniel is a great barber and I would give this review 5 starts except for one thing. But wait, Daniel gets 5 stars! Today was the first time I was there and there were 2 dogs, unleashed just roaming the shop. Let me just say I have nothing against dogs. I get how much they mean to people. However, when I walk into a business I'm not that one that needs to pet a dog. I don't want them to approach me I also don't appreciate when one shakes his head and you can see his dribble spraying on the floor. For people like me it would be appreciated if you kept them in the back or at least on a leash. I hope to continue patronizing this place as it's just 2 blocks from me. The Shop was a safe haven when I desperately needed a cut. I'm from San Francisco where walk-ins are nearly impossible to find. Ash was wonderful and just whom I could rely upon. At a time when I could have acted on an impulse asking to lopping it all off, Ash was able to make me feel comfortable by giving me time to process if I really did want to and was I sure. Not something often provided these days in salons. The laughter and banter made the visit to The Shop one of the best haircuts I've ever had in the 19 years I've lived in the Bay Area. Gaby is phenomenal! I was back to square one on finding a hair salon when a coworker recommended The Shop. They just celebrated 2 years since opening their doors. My family also recommended getting my hair done here. I wish listened to my friends and family when they first told me about this great salon in the heart of downtown San Rafael. They only make same day appointments. I called at lunch and a nice lady scheduled me for 6pm. Gaby took her time and made sure my hair looked amazing in the end. She shampooed and left the conditioner in my hair before trimming an inch off, evening out my layers, and thinning it out. Gaby is talented and knew exactly the way to cut my hair. I have very thick hair so I felt the difference when she was done. Ladies don't be intimidated by the looks of this hair salon. There may be more male clientele, but they cut men's and women's hair. All of the hair dressers are women which is pretty neat. I spent the best $35 ever on a haircut! There's also a stamp card: after 7 haircuts you get 50% your choice of haircare products. Honestly really disappointed. I went in for a haircut yesterday. Wanted in inch off of my hair plus face framing layers with the shortest piece being around my nose. When I left my hair was partially wet still, I get that I didn't ask for a blowout but I couldn't even see what my hair looked like. Once it was dried, my shortest piece was below my chin...so I called back in, they took me back in to fix it and then I got straight bangs with no layering. I will not be back. I have been getting the same haircut for years, and feel like I know how to explain it at this point but have never gotten such a bad cut. Photo for reference, how is this face framing?! Service is great, Scheduling is a nightmare Called at opening to try to schedule for ~ 2p that day, was told 'we dont schedule that far in advanced in the day, call back later' (huh?). Called back later (around 1p) and was told 'oh were full for the day, sorry?' Called back another day around noon, trying to schedule something in the day because I was told they schedule 2-3hrs in advanced, also full for the day. How is someone supposed to schedule a haircut at this place? I get if you want to have a decent flow of customers and you can have a waitlist, but there does not appear to be a way to schedule a haircut at this place, and unless you have hours to go and wait at open.... read more

I was sleep deprived and exhausted going into the appointment. I also didn't have the clearest idea of how I wanted my hair cut. My barber with blue hair did a great job cutting my hair, interpreting how I wanted it done, as well as pleasantly conversed in small talk despite my nasty mood. I really like getting my haircut here. Jess is always great, this review is not to reflect on her (she deserves 10 stars) but the fact that I can't just make an appointment. I've been getting my hair cut here regularly for quite some time now and while my haircuts are always 5+ stars worthy and the place is nice and everyone is super friendly, I'm getting frustrated by the fact that I can't just set an appointment for a couple days in the future at a time that works for both the business, the stylist, and me. They know their schedule, why not just take appointments? Instead of taking appointments they operate on a waitlist. IDK how that's supposed to work because quite frankly, it doesn't work well. I guess you're supposed to call every morning to get a spot on the list. Well, I happy to have this thing called a job, and this other thing called a life. I don't want to call every day to see if I can come up with a time that works. I just want to call and make an appointment for X day at Y time for Z service. Again, the haircuts are great and the people that work here are wonderful but whoever runs this business needs to reconsider their waitlist system and start making real appointments. I really want to come here but I'm about to just dig up the phone number of the place I used to go that didn't do nearly as good of a job just because I can actually make an appointment. If I have to type the word appointment one more time today I'm going to throw my computer out the window and that is not productive so I'm going to wish you all a happy Monday. read more

I've been a faithful customer to Larkspur Barbers for years however, sadly last month Tony has decided to close up shop and retire. This is put me the situation to try to find a new barber which I have been dreading for the past month. I called around 11 today and was able to make an appointment for 1:30. Unfortunately I was running late and called before head and was able to move my appointment to 1:50. Prior to arriving I was told that I might have to wait, which I was totally fine especially seeing that I was the one that was already running behind. When I arrived, I checked in with the front and they set me up with Edmond who happened to have just got back from his lunch break. My hairstyle is very basic, but unfortunately I don't know what I need to ask for because I've been going to barber for almost 10 years and all had to do was tell them the usual and it came out great every time. Thankfully, with as little information as I provided, Edmond gave me a fantastic haircut and provided exactly what I wanted. He seemed pretty shy at first, but once it was all said and done, and I told him that I would return for his services again, it seemed to put him at ease. I'm glad that my search for a new barber was a short venture, and I look forward to working with Edmond again in the future! read more

I've been loyal to Larkspur Barbers since moving back to the bay 2 years ago. However those dudes are just insanely busy all the time, their hours are so limiting unless you're retired and can show up in the middle of the day or before 4pm. Anyway, after showing up at larkspur on Saturday at 9am right when they open and finding 7 people (only 2 barbers) I was ready to give up. However, hopped on yelp and thank god I found The Shop. The shop is gorgeous, they squeezed me in at 10:30am, my appointment started on time, and Hollz was awesome. She did a great time with my crazy cowlicks and she's just good people. Prices are fair, $35 for men's, and what's cool about this place is they do women, men and kids and while I was there it was literally me, another dude, a woman and 2 kids and everyone looked like they were digging it. And the hours are amazing! Even open on Sunday. If you're on the hunt or just want to try someone new, check the Shop out! read more

I stopped in the Shop once because I was in a hurry. I was going out of town and needed a trim badly. A little background, I used to do hair, my wife owns a salon that mostly does women's hair, but I can get my hair done free but it's a little like being on standby for a flight. if a paying customer come in, I get bumped. also keep in mind, I am ridiculously hard to please. So.. I got a trim from Jess, worst case, it's not great and I go back to standby with my wife. HOWEVER, it was fantastic. She was quick, efficient, professional and it was perfect. Two weeks later, thought I'd test the boundaries, went back to Jess, gave her a slightly more complicated request and BAM...perfect again. Two weeks later I really upped the ante on the difficulty level of the cut and AGAIN it was flawless. Jess is personable, likable and fantastically technically proficient with a man's cut, and I have given her varying degrees of difficulty and have been impressed each time. I can't speak for the entire Shop, but I pay every week for a cut I could get for free. That should tell you everything you need to know. Jess is a savant with clippers and scissor. read more

Ever since I moved to San Rafael, I have been coming to The Shop to get my hair cut. I think I found it originally because of their great yelp reviews and it reminded me of the old barber shop I used to go to in Southern California before moving up here. The Shop is a great place to get a haircut. It's very nice and clean inside but also has the edge that barber shops do. The place always seems to be packed when I go there and it's no wonder why. I have had multiple hairdressers here but the most recent cut (and I think my first one) was done by Shayna. She did a great job and it was clear she knew what she was doing. I asked for what I wanted in the beginning, and she delivered. She took her time making sure it looked good, but it was still quick enough so I could get on with my day. I'll definitely request her next time I go back. I would have to say the only gripe I have with this place is the way they do their scheduling. They go by a waitlist so don't ever plan on walking right in unless you go first thing in the morning or want to wait an hour or so. Sometimes this is okay, but this most recent haircut was pushed off weeks because on multiple occasions I tried to squeeze it in to no avail. If anyone in the North Bay is looking for a good haircut from a clean but cool place, look no further. read more

This is our new family salon. My husband and 2yo son get their hair cut here and I get my bangs trimmed here because it's just so easy to pop in (I'm still married to my hair stylist but I'd love to get them a try at one point). Why do we go here? It's convenient - call ahead and they'll give you a slot to come in usually 30 min to two hours from when you call in. This has been our experience most weekends. If you walk in you might have to wait a little longer. I believe we've had three different stylists, all are a little different but we've gotten good to great haircuts from all three. My husband's hair is notoriously difficult to cut and our first stylist gave him specific instructions to give future stylists so that he could have the same cut repeated whenever he goes in. If you have an easy going toddler who's been through a haircut before, this is a good place for you. The stylists have all been great with my son (even though I'm sure they aren't working here to do kids haircuts). If you need plenty of distractions and a more kid friendly environment try a more kid centric salon. read more

My daughter is not much of a girly girl. But I didn't intentionally take her to a barber shop. This place called "the shop" in San Rafael may look like a male only barbershop but it is anything but. There are some bad ass women that work there Who clearly know what they're doing. It's not for everyone. If you'd prefer the scented femininity of a women's salon, where the hairdressers are uber feminine, then no you'd not like it here. My sweet didn't get a fancy new do but the lines were clean and the cut wasn't expensive. And she has mounds of luxurious locks to contend with. I'd say get outside your box baby. Try something new that has the added benefit of being reputable. So it's not a real gamble. And while you wait you can have a cocktail. Seriously. Why possibly could be wrong with that? read more

She gave me some tips on styling and I was out the door. The only downside in my eyes is the lack of appointments, but my understanding is that it allows them to see more people and keep prices lower. If you feel like dealing with Prima Donnas, this is the place for you. Absolutely the worse service I have ever experienced. I usually go here and when I'm done I give no less than a $20.00 tip for a $28.00 haircut, that will never again. I made an appointment showed up early, a guy who was on the list before me, made an appointment for the same time but was late for his and I have to wait, while the girl who calls herself a manager is putzing around in the back for 15 minutes. She could have easily taken me as I didn't need much done. PSA you're not the only game in town. read more
