THE BEST CUT, COLOR, AND BALAYAGE. I think they advertise more as a cut place but they are EXPERTS at coloring too so don't be deceived. I've been in this neighborhood for over 10 years and hair tech hands down does the best cut, color, and balayage. I get my cuts done with Grace or Gloria (the owner). After recommending Hair Tech to my friend, she now is a repeat customer too and she lives an hour away lol!! Last time I saw her, she got a crazy intricate Audrey Hepburn inspired bob cut with a million layers that took over an hour and only paid $15. The guy treated her hair like it was the tower of Pisa itself. I was hesitant to do a balayage because I have colored my hair a million times at home and other salons in my neighborhood and after shelling over $200 for a balayage elsewhere I didn't feel like it was worth it so I just didn't do anything to it for a year. I was on the fence between balayage and highlights, or doing nothing at all. I feel like colorists always try to do away the "brass" and get the blondes as BLONDE aka COOL as possible. I am not pale.. that doesn't look good on me.. So Gloria's work was SO worth it... she did exactly what I wanted, a HONEY Beyoncé/jlo blonde, EXCEPT her balayage is so nice and intricate it could pass for highlights because it looks so expensive unlike other colorists that do big chunks. I actually didn't want balayage or highlights before coming here, because highlights are too strippy and can look too mature on me contrasted with my dark asian hair, but balayage can be too blocky and look like a single processed color or ombré anyway. Gloria's work looks like a seamless blend of balayage and highlights, so this is perfect!!! I am mostly "blonde" (like a Beyonce one color) with the shimmery blends of different golden locks, the colored strips are super fine closer to my crown to the bottom my ears like highlights under close inspection, but blends in perfectly throughout the bottom as a balayage. GLORIA HITTING ALL THE NOTES WITHOUT ME EVEN ASKING. I was just gonna let her do her job because I wasn't sure what I wanted. AND for half the price the other salon cost me. You know how sometimes even when things are done right you have hair remorse until you get used to your new hair? I never feel like that here, I feel like wow I need to go out right now with this hair!!! I definitely left feeling so pretty. Ps. All the staff are super friendly and feel like family. Gloria is very funny and fun to talk to, but won't if you don't want to. She doesn't ask you a million questions about yourself like other stylists. Sometimes it's nice to just be able to kick back and chill. They just do their job, are punctual and professional, get the job done and EXCEL for better prices than anywhere in Chicago. I'm leaving a negative review because I was blindsided by the price of my service. I have been here before but did not see Gloria. I had gotten a trim in the past and paid $15 plus tip. This time, I requested to see Gloria and get a trim. There was no mention of price change, but on the Yelp page it says $25 for women's haircut. The other Yelpers have also said they've paid $15 for a trim. While Gloria did a good job cutting my hair, I had asked for a trim but was ultimately charged for $45. Mind you, had this been a haircut, that would have been fine. For $45-55, I could go to another salon in the area and get a full wash, shampoo, cut, and blow dry. I ultimately feel ripped off because I was not told of the up charge when I asked for a TRIM, nor were the prices anywhere in the salon itself. I suggest calling ahead and asking for the price. I regret not doing that, but I feel as though she was not transparent with me. read more

LOVE IT! Thank you Grace for a lovely haircut. I loved how you took the time to really understand what I want and gave me good recommendations for how to style my hair. I loved that extra bit of time that you took because it showed that you really care. I bought one of those cylinder brushes right after leaving your salon! I intend to use it every day now. Ben was also great company to have. I could tell by the guy who left right when I sat down that Ben was also very talented at cutting hair. At the end of the day, it's a very affordable place to get your hair done. For $13, Grace did a fabulous job and it was probably one of the best haircuts I've gotten. Disappointed! I brought my brother in for a haircut. He loves getting haircuts and looking good. The female stylist did a fast job. Another client was waiting, but that is no excuse. The front turned out ok. The sides and back are awful. I pointed out a divot on the right side behind his ear & she told me it grows that way. It does not! I did not want him to feel bad so I did not make a big deal. At home, in bright lights, the left side looks even worst. The thickness of the hair is uneven and jagged. See the pictures and judge for yourself. Just because the client is handicapped does not mean he does not care. He wears cologne and takes great care in his appearance. Paula was fantastic! I purchased a Groupon prior to booking an apt for a haircut and full highlights. I had long, over processed black hair (from dyeing it for years) before coming in to get a full set of light brown highlights. Black hair is extremely hard to get rid off and Paula stripped it off, bleached it for a few minutes before washing it off and drying it. After noticing that the bleach didn't really make my hair much lighter, she went back and re-did the process over again so that it would turn out light brown. I love the way my hair turned out! Paula went through a lot of effort to fix my hair and we also had great conversations throughout the process. Definitely going back to her if I need my hair done again! read more

I would say, proceed with caution. I came here as a first-time walk-in because of the good reviews. In a rush, I left the salon without having the stylist blow-dry and style my hair after a very simple trim and framing of the face. The next day, when I was styling my own hair, it was very noticeable she forgot to frame my hair on the left-side, leaving it completely lopsided. Mortified and distraught, I demanded they fix it without charge. The good thing is that they did so and took responsibility. I will accept responsibility in that I should've checked more carefully before leaving the salon the first time, even if I think the cut is very simple. You get what you pay for, and again, my advice is to proceed with caution. read more

3+ years and still going strong. Who knew I would be the LTR type? What I love about this place is that it has remained consistent, minus doubling their space by moving into the old yoga studio next door. Go Hair Tech! Still $12 during normal hours and $9 on weekdays between 9AM and 12PM. No crazy value-added (cue: add'l $$) services (minus a complimentary eyebrow trimming upon request), just a straight-up haircut to get me on my way looking hotter than I did 10 minutes earlier. Paula and Gloria have my preferred clipper number, cut, and style down to a T, and I have no problem going to either one of them. I only wish that, since age has done a number on me and I do not have as many flowing locks as I used to, they would reduce the $12 cost for me. I went in to get sheared for Locks of Love, going from about 15 inches to less than half. Paola was just great and managed to save more hair to send off than anybody else ever has. Not only that, but the cut looks good, and before she realized that I've done this before, was very careful to make sure that I wasn't going to be surprised when my hair actually ended up short. No, this isn't a fancy salon that only uses brushes made from the tail fur of virgin wallabies that have only eaten hazelnuts and filet for the last three months before being shaved in a full moon ceremony, and the ambiance is a lot more old-fashioned barbershop than anything else, but for an affordable cut from somebody who knows what she's doing, you couldn't do better than Paula. read more

I went to Hair Tech after reading reviews on Yelp and I am glad I did. I made an appointment with Gloria. She charged for $17 for a wash and haircut - huge price difference between this and my usual Mario Tricoci stylists. Yessss please!! My cut took about 6 minutes and looks GREAT! Being that I worked at Mario Tricoci for years, and have had the best of the best cut my hair, I am bit picky. Gloria killed it! She was such a sweetheart too! When I got there, I remembered that I had no cash on me and only had access to my debit card, in which I didn't know the PIN for! :( Gloria was great and let me pay her with a check - hard to find someone so trusting these days. I have scheduled an upcoming appointment with her for highlights. Here's to hoping that they look as good as my cut! This place is no frills. I went here for the first time today and left smiling. I usually spend about 20 bucks on a haircut and I get a decent result depending on who cuts it. I was looking for a new place and I noticed a small hand-written sign in a window of a residential building that said $9 haircut's between 9am-12. I work on the south side and was going to get my haircut down there, but I was running behind on time and said WTF I'll try it. It was an weird place for a salon because it's kinda inside a residential building, right next to a Pilates studio, I had to get buzzed in ha!! So I get buzzed in take a swift right and walk into a quaint little place with a couple of chairs and I meet Gloria. I asked if I needed to wait because she had a client doing color, she said no have a seat. I told her that I was nervous about being there, bc It was my first time, then I proceeded to give her instructions on how I wanted my haircut. The next thing that happened was a miracle..she actually listed to me and I recieved one of the best haircuts ever for 9 bucks. When it came time to pay I asked if I could use my card because I didn't have any cash. She said she didn't take cards but she said you can go to the ATM or bring me back a check--I thought that it was cool how she trusted me to come back. It just wasnt the price that will make me come here from now on, Gloria was so professional and easy to talk to, I believe I found a hidden gem for sure!!! I was long overdue for a cut, and I lost my voice that weekend. My regular salon couldnt hear me over the phone, so I walked over to hair tech. 13$ for a great cut, Gloria followed the style I had- i have very long hair, just below the bust- and she did a great job with layers and styling. She only comes on Saturdays, which works for me. The place is clean and no frills, as the others have mentioned, but they work to make sure you have the hairstyle you want. I also came in when I wanted to do a donation for my hair. I have to say these ladies really know what they are doing, my hair looks fantastic every time I leave. they even make sure that the hairstyles grow out well, since I cut my hair rarely, like every 3-6 months. I actually came to this place because I saw a woman on the L platform who had a really cute pixie cut. She said Paula cut her hair and soon after I made an appointment. Paula has been really good with keeping my ends trimmed. I haven't gotten a hair cut only trims. You also can't beat the price here. Other places usually charged me $35/$40 for a trim! I walk out the door paying $20, which includes the tip. Paula's schedule is pretty flexible and I like that she works every other Sunday, which makes it convenient for me. By chance I had Gloria and after a year I am a regular and love it! Gloria is a wonderful person and an amazing colorist as well. Right now I've been growing my hair out so when it comes to cut it's nothing more than a trim but she's kept my long locks looking great since July of 2011. She is accommodating with my crazy work schedule (lots of travel and commuting to the burbs) and I enjoy my salon visits as I also get to catch up with her on a personal level. I managed to get a decent haircut for $10, but only asking repeatedly to make some "fixes" after the haidresser told me she had "finished". I'm very torn on this place. It was cash only, which I wasn't told until after the cut but the stylist was friendly. She never introduced herself and it was extremely hot in the salon. I decided to trade up a chain haircut location for this place because of the positive reviews. She gave a decent cut, but I felt that there was no attention to detail. The ladies here do a fantastic job of making me look well kempt. After I moved up north, my commute to Hair Tech just got a little longer. I refused to go anywhere else.
