Finding a great hairstylist is a B***tch! Jeffrey is a great find. I have been with Jeffrey for several years now and never a bad haircut. He will ask how you want the cut and do it - just right. His loft salon is located in the Wrigleyville area. For me, it's a great walk to the salon or if I feel lazy, the Clark Street bus stop is half-block away. His rates are very reasonable. I came in looking for professionally styled big bouncy curls and I also added on a split end treatment. Styling should take 45-60 minutes and the conditioning treatment 10-15 minutes. It took an hour and 50 minutes to style my hair with a flat iron and it looked god awful. I also told Jairo I was going out for my husband's birthday at 8 which was a two hour window for my 6pm appointment. However, he was super confused on how to do anything with my thick Latino hair that he'd curl one section with a flat iron it would fall flat and then he'd try again. The prices are fair, but it sucks that I had to pay to have my hair needlessly burned. It sucks even more that my hair had to endure excessive heat styling after my expensive reparative treatment. He also never figured out how to hold a curl so I just ended up with frizzy hair with one good curl in the front. I only went to a salon for the curl since flat ironing takes no skill. Also, my poor husband had to wait half an hour for me to finish my appointment on his birthday. I had wrecked my hair after a really bad diy dye job. I was going for the blue black hair color and instead, my hair had turned out green and blonde. That's when I decided to go to a professional to get it fixed. I called SBJ after viewing their website and looking at their great work in their gallery. Jeffrey was very responsive and I ended up having an appointment with him only a few days later. The location is easily accessible by public transit. The salon is very comfortable. There's comfortable furniture, magazines, and you even get complimentary coffee, tea or Miller Lite if you want. The other stylist, Erin was also friendly and welcoming. Jeffrey is an incredibly competent and talented stylist. He will give you what you WANT instead of the easy thing to do. I told him the color I was going for and he accomplished what was needed to be done to get those results. I have never been more happy with a hair color in my life. I left my first review for Jeffrey in 2011 and I continue to be a loyal customer 6 years later. I have moved all over the city and continue to go to SBJ. There are several reasons I continue to go every three weeks for my standing appointment. First, he is consistent. His salon is consistently clean. He and Erin are always friendly and welcoming whenever anybody walks in the door. His pricing is consistent and if it does go up, he posts the increase ahead of time as a courtesy to customers. He gives consistently great service. Second, the salon has a cheers feeling to it where everyone knows your name. Both Jeffrey and Erin take the time to get to know every customer that walks through the doors as they want to make sure they are providing individualized service and attention to everybody. Third, they not only listen to you when you tell them what service you want, they also discuss your hair type, texture, daily styling routing to really help you find the right color or cut that works best for your hair type and lifestyle so that you will walk out of the salon truly happy with your decision. Sometimes I ask for a trendy haircut that apparently won't work with my hair type but Jeffrey will talk to me about alternatives and I end up with something that is even better than my original request. Finally, I continue to go to SBJ salon as they have become family. The salon is a place I have truly grown comfortable to be. I trust them completely with my hair and eyebrows and I enjoy every second I get to spend there. I highly recommend giving them a try. I hate having to do this so much, but it's the right thing to do. I went in for a highlight quite a few months back and Jeffrey BUTCHERED my hair. It was a later Saturday appointment. All I wanted was a simple full foil highlight job. I have dark blond hair and wanted to lighten up a bit. During the procedure everything seemed normal, he talked some, it wasn't world class service but at the deal I was getting I didn't care. In the salon everything looked fine. Then I got home.... I had HUGE bleach lines where the foil bled bleach into the other parts of my hair. I almost couldn't believe what I was seeing. I happened to live down the street from a Super Cuts and literally ran out the door down to see them. I tearfully and frantically asked the girl at the counter if I could speak to a stylist and soon I had a CROWD of stylists around me. Everyone was very nice but they all agreed that I my hair was very very bad...and even worse, that it was beyond immediate repair. I should have written this earlier, feel bad if anyone else had a terrible experience there because I wasn't on here to spread the word. It seems he has some other positive reviews, but honestly, what is worth ruining your hair? Don't take a chance. Do not go here. Ok, let me preface this review by saying I OBVIOUSLY have not been to Styles by Jeffrey in a good 4 months. So if any of you see me on the street, don't judge Jeffrey by the way my hair looks now. That being said... Jeffrey is thebomb.com. This is coming from a girl who definitely doesn't trust her hairs to just any pair of scissors. After moving to Chicago from SoCal last year, I put off finding a new hairstylist for a loooooong time. I pretty much let my hair sprout wildly out of my head until my boyfriend actually told me that I needed a haircut (ladies, when your normally apathetic-about-how-you-look man makes a remark like this...you know it's time). My boyfriend actually went to Jeffrey before me, and told me he was awesome, so I went in and gave him a shot. I was a little hesitant at first, because I am accustomed to paying $65+ for a shampoo + cut + blow dry, but Styles by Jeffrey had a sign outside that said $25 for women. WHAT. In the name of all that is holy, I have never heard of a cut that cheap outside of joints like Super Cuts. I imagined that this dude was going to put a bowl on my head and just snip everything that was sticking out. Thankfully, that wasn't the case. Not only did he squeeze me in at the very end of his workday, but Jeffrey took his time asking me what I wanted and made great suggestions about the shape of my hair when I wasn't totally sure of what to do with it. I got a great shampoo, cut, and dry, and I came out looking faaaaabulous. We had a nice conversation all the while (which is something I look for in a good stylist), and I didn't have to take out a loan to pay the guy. If it helps the men out at all, my boyfriend was really happy with his cut as well (men's cuts are cheaper). Jeffrey rocks! I had to recently wave goodbye to my last stylist, as she was only available on Sundays. I was desperate to find someone to cut my hair before my wedding after my stylist moved out of town without warning--for the second time! I searched Yelp and came across Jeffrey. Though I was nervous about trying someone new that close to my wedding, it had to be done. Jeffrey's salon is new and cozy, with a big plasma TV on the wall so I could catch the start of Glee while he finished my brows. Leaving a hair stylist is like going through a breakup. Whether or not it was your idea, you feel like a piece of you is missing long after ways are parted. For a long while after, every hair salon and hair stylist is compared to your old, and you decide that no one will ever live up to your old stylist. And then one day, it all changes. Since moving to Chicago in 2011, I've been bouncing around from salon to salon, unable to really find a stylist whose work I loved. Sure there are a ton of talented stylists in Chicago, but I wasn't able to find a salon that I would be willing to make repeat trips to. That all changed on March 29th. I walked into Styles by Jeffrey with hair that was long overdue for a good cut. Jeffrey made suggestions, took the time to really look at what he was working with, educated me about the products I was using, gave me affordable alternatives, and I left with one hell of a fantastic haircut. I made a mention about thinking about going a bit lighter for Spring/Summer and both Jeffrey AND Erin took the time to look at my hair and make suggestions on what could be done to lighten without completely destroying my hair. Naturally, I booked an appointment with Erin and am counting down the days until I can be back. I've only been here once but it happened to be on a day that "Jeffrey" wasn't there. The replacement hairstylist took 1 hr to cut my hair which is rediculous because I didn't ask for anything extremely challenging and my hair is very manageable. I'm not that picky when it comes to hair but even I did not believe it was a great cut. So I'd say, make sure to go when "Jeffrey" is there because all the rest of the reviews seem to be good. Preface: this is my first non-restaurant review. I hate getting my hair cut. Hate it. However, it must be done about 1.5 times a year, and especially during job interviews. Well, I went to Styles by Jeffrey, which was pretty new at the time, I believe (August 2010). I just walked in and said, hey, I need a haircut for some upcoming job interviews. Jeffrey took care of it, and now I have a job. So...there. Furthermore, I just want to add that he was incredibly friendly and I actually enjoyed being there, even though I hate haircuts (see above for details). I hate writing bad reviews (especially when so many people seem to love this place), but I didn't have a good experience here. I came in to get a hair cut. I asked for a slightly graduated A line bob. I guess that's what he cut, but it was done very poorly. There was almost no graduation to the cut...it was a strait blunt cut and looked very boxy. Also, I didn't noticed this at first, but when I got home and looked at my hair longer the sides were not even. The right side of my hair was very clearly at least 1/2 inch longer than the left side. I had to go somewhere else to get it fixed. I did think that Jefferey was very nice and pleasant and I love the look of the shop...unfortunately the hair cut I received was not good. read more

I wouldnt schlep all the way up here from Bridgeport if this place( and the people) wasn't so amazing. I've had my hair cut by both Erin and Jeffrey. Both times I wanted either an unusual cut or color. They are straightforward with what will and won't work and I can trust that they won't tell me that something will look good if it won't work for my hair. There's no one else in the city that I would consider going to. Both Erin and Jeffrey are more talented than what you would find in a high end salon, but the atmosphere of the salon is warm and very friendly. Love this place! I've been getting my hair cut by Erin for almost a year. I always leave very satisfied with the look and the reasonable price tag. Erin is also an extremely talented colorist! I wanted to try a balayage, but since I'm kind of a chicken about color, I didn't want to do anything extreme. I wound up with a subtle, natural-looking sun-kissed effect; it looked great!! I'm pretty noncommittal when it comes to color, so it was great to have something that grew out nicely, and was very low-maintenance. When I get the cajones to color my hair again, I know it's in great hands with Erin! This is a small salon, but it's one of the charms of the business. The staff clearly have a greater rapport, and they're a close-knit group; sometimes it's fun to just sit there quietly and listen to their amusing banter. Online booking also makes for easy and quick appointment-setting. Needless to say, between the fair pricing, stylists' talent, staff rapport, and neighborhood feel, it's no wonder Styles by Jeffrey is so well-received by fellow Yelpers. read more

I've been going to Jeffery for a couple years now and he always does a wonderful job! Absolutely the best haircut I've had! I recently brought my mom in (who was visiting from out of state) he also did a great job with her cut. What I appreciated even more was how he explained how to manage her hair in the months to come. Hen gave her tips for conditioning and drying that I'm sure will help her unruly locks. He answered all her questions and I have no doubt she will be scheduling an appointment next time she comes to visit! If you have long layers, you MUST go to Jeffery! UPDATE - so the last review I left, I was transitioning back to blonde from a super deep red. It took almost a year and four visits but my blonde is more effect than before. Erin worked out a plan for me to get back to blonde that wouldn't ruin my hair for the rest of my life. She did an incredible job, told me exactly what to do and made sure to make my hair look amazing throughout the transition. I wouldn't change a thing. She thoroughly explained how it would take some time and would require me to do little damage to my hair to keep it healthy and I followed what she said. I have only had my hair cut by Jeffrey twice so far, but both times he has done an excellent job, and it seems like FINALLY someone knows how to cut my hair. I love that it looks good even when I don't feel like styling it, which is often. Jeffrey does a way better job than any fancy salon I've been to and charges a fraction of the price. Also, I hate making small talk with most people, but Jeffrey is not one of them. He is not snobby or irritable like many hair dressers I've encountered, he just seems genuine and very nice. I was having a dilemma about how to color my hair darker for the holidays without spending $150!!! I called Jeffrey and he fit me right in for a cut and color. He even opened on Sunday when they are normally closed. The conversation was great! I watched a little TV, talked about everything, and enjoyed a glass of wine. It was relaxingly wonderful. Had my hair cut by Jeffrey last night for the first time. I wanted to give my hairstyle an update and my regular barber just wasn't listening to me. Jeffrey was patient, listened to what I wanted, and gave me a *great* cut. The online appointment booking was a breeze and ensured that I was able to be seen promptly without a wait. The booking service also sends out emails and texts to remind you of your appointment so if you're busy, you still don't forget your appt. (It was not over the top and not annoying.) I made an appointment for a Saturday afternoon but realized I could come in earlier and was able to push my appointment ahead by almost two hours. It was very quiet but the stylist was great!
