(This is my first YELP review ever): Similar to a few of the other situations, I was in a bind as I waited until the last minute to book a hair color/cut appointment (I've definitely learned my lesson). A friend had recommended a stylist at a different salon and the color turned out to be not what I had wanted. I got my haircut with Alicia the day after and explained to her the situation. She did a fabulous cut and saw that as a student, I was desperate for help. She squeezed me in early the next morning and did an AMAZING job with the color! I'm a guy with hair long enough that the barber isn't an option, but not so complicated I need a $100 haircut. Alicia's is a great solution for me. Kim T. is cool and skilled. The vibe is relaxed and they serve you coffee while you're there. And there's no pressure to get a wash if you don't want one. Love my curly cut from Alicia! I have some difficult hair to wrangle - lots of curls, thick hair, etc. Alicia cut and styled my hair today for an important event -- a photo shoot for professional headshots. She took a lot of special care to make sure my hair style was just right. She was incredibly patient as I shared some pictures of things I like and things I don't. And she delivered! My hair and photo shoot turned out great. The location is so convenient (near Anthropologie), the decor is clean, modern, warm and energizing all at the same time. And the people are genuinely nice. I hate my haircut. I went in knowing what cut I wanted. The hair dresser cut my bangs to short. It looks terrible since I have curly hair. She was nice towards the end. I felt like I was bugging her when I asked for water. I wouldn't go back. Didn't even bother tipping her when I paid $60 for an ugly haircut. read more

Decided to have my hair cut here based on other reviewers and boy was I glad I did. Everyone in the salon was lovely and very accomodating, chatty. My hairstylist Kim, I give her all the kudos. She was very personable and able to relate to a lot of my personal experiences. Kim answered all of the questions I had regarding my hair and I purchased a few of their products which work very well. I went here about 2 weeks ago, and had Nick as a stylist. I have a busy work schedule and they agreed to take me about an hour before closing on last minute notice. I have long, thin hair so I was nervous about getting layers, but Nick was great and listened to exactly what I wanted. He spent time making sure to style it correctly with my hair type & length. Alicia, the owner, returned my call a couple of weeks after my hair appointment. Once we spoke, she handled the situation as well as I could've hoped, took responsibility for the situation and offered to fix my hair. It was a pleasure to sit in Alicia's chair, easy conversation, very relaxed, it was clear she knew exactly what she was doing and I was pleased with the results. A very different experience overall than with the other stylist. If you have an appointment with Alicia, you can be confident in your stylist. I thought one of the nice things about the salon was that they didn't do the whole junior/senior/master stylist hierarchy; but the truth of the matter is, there's going to be a difference in ability, so it's a gamble. The price I paid for my original hair service was not a reflection of that gamble. I'm saving you the gamble, try to get an appointment with Alicia if you decide to go here. read more

I went to Alicia's for the first time this past weekend. I almost walked right by it the first time, I barely noticed the sign, but once I went inside, I was immediately welcomed by the entire staff. I have never been to a friendlier salon. The stylist who worked on me, Kim, is a gem. She has done a Coppola keratin treatment on me previously, and 3 months later, my hair is still wonderful. I have become a walking spokesperson for the Coppola keratin treatment!! I am relieved to see that Alicia's offers the Coppola treatment, as well as the Brazailian Blowout. Kim is also an amazing color technician. Be it just a root touchup, or lowlights, the color always looks amazing, and I constantly receive compliments. I highly recommend Alicia's (and Kim!) for amazing salon services at very affordable prices! read more

First time here. I was looking to do something a little more funky with my hair and had a picture of a style I liked. Alicia was wonderful and I am completely happy with my new style! I read reviews about hair by Alicia's on Yelp and decided to give them a try. I was happy that they are open on a Sunday and drove right over. I was welcomed by the front desk girl and Alicia took me right away. (She wanted to do the buzzed part of my hair first), then I was brought to the wash part of the salon and I must say that these were the most comfortable wash chairs I had ever sat on. They were more like beds and not the typical push forward chairs that are uncomfortable when you lean back. The man that washed my hair was very nice and kept asking me about the water temperature. After my hair was washed Alicia took me back to her chair where she cut my hair to perfection. I will most definitely be back! If you need a new place for your hair definitely give this place a try! read more

I'm very picky when it comes to my hair and I've been changing hairdressers constantly for the past few years. Jackie took the time to listen and talk to me about exactly what I wanted. My hair is thin and straight and I always get stuck with too short/too layered/too soccer mom haircuts. Jackie didn't take much off in terms of the length but she worked meticulously on creating subtle layers to give my hair volume and shape. I also liked that she started cutting my hair dry to see exactly what it would look like. I did get a fabulous shampoo and blow dry as well. Jackie put the finishing touches after and gave me plenty of tips on how to handle my hair. She was also very personable and fun to talk to. Needless to say, I'll be coming back! read more

Scheduled an appointment for myself, my 14 year old daughter and my mother yesterday and we were all so pleased. That in itself is a miracle. We have been searching for years for a salon that could meet all our needs and put smiles on all 3 of our faces and this is the first time that has been accomplished. My daughter and I have curly hair but hers are tighter than mine and few cut curls correctly. Alicia's speicializes in curls. We both went short and look fab if I say so myself :-). My mother's hair is wavy now and Alicia recommended a cut slightly different from what my mother went in wanting and it was a better call. We will be returning to Alicia's from here on out and I would recommend this salon to everyone. They are consummate professionals, experienced, ask for guidance from Alicia who has over a decade of experience when needed (and she gives constant hands on education as it is a small salon) and they are friendly. Popped in VERY last minute last week when I found my old hairstyle becoming unmanageable. This was my first time at Alicia's and here's what I found: 1. The salon is really clean, bright, and well kept. 2. I was greeted at the door, had my coat hung up for me, was offered seltzer, coffee, tea, or water, and received it with a hand full of magazines for me to look through while I was getting my hair cut. There's nothing better than a salon that treats you like they want you to have a wonderful experience! 3. Kim is a creative and talented hair stylist. I walked in with medium length blah hair and came out with a chic chin-length cut that I have not stopped receiving compliments on. She took the time to get to know me (and my hair) as well as my hair needs and it really shows in the end result. 4. The price was very reasonable for New Jersey, especially for the service I received. I would absolutely return and recommend Alicia's (and Kim in particular) to any of my friends! read more

Nervous about trying new salons, I checked all over Yelp and saw the reviews. Obvious from my five star rating, I loved my experience here. This pace itself was beautiful. The sinks to get shampooed are so comfortable on your neck unlike many others. I had my appointment with Nick, and I was going for a dramatic cut. I had grown my bangs out to about chin length and wanted to cut the rest of my hair for a blunt cut. Since that was about 5-6 inches, Nick started out at shoulder length and then I decided to go a little higher. If you are in the search for a new salon, I'd say go and Nick will make you look fabulous! read more

Kimberly gave me the best haircut and most beautiful foil highlights I have ever had!! The staff asks questions like "do you need to be able to put up the shortest layer?" and things like that, they don't just do their own thing and hope you like it, they want you to be happy. Warm and friendly environment. I'm from out of state and got totally lost on the way, so I was a half hour late. No worries, and they had a glass of water waiting for me when I arrived. I called and told them I had never been there before and asked which stylist I should get my hair cut by and the reply was "All of our stylists are great, so I'm sure any one of them will be great" something like that. A very confident statement, and seemingly a true one too. I walked in, it was very down to earth and the staff was friendly. I was really searching for a place that isn't pretentious and I Alicia's definitely isn't. Natalie cut my hair, she did a great job. I just told her I wanted some side swept bangs and for it to complement my face shape and she really listened and worked based upon what I said. Stereotypically, guys don't put much thought into their hair. Some of us are fortunate enough to have found our hairstyle in high school and rarely wander off our tried-and-true haircuts. As for me, this is the first time I considered growing my hair out. My research revealed that I cannot simply let it grow, but that I must put time and resources maintaining it so it grows like the awesome hair of the guy on my iPhone that I shyly show to the hairstylist. My experience at Alicia's was mostly highlighted by my friendly stylist, Natalie. She knew it was me when I entered the shop like Kramer, being that I called two hours before closing to make a last-minute appointment. Regardless, she immediately guided me and sat me to her area and offered a glass water. She knew it was hot out there, but out of embarrassment, I politely declined. Either that or it was too good to be true that a "barber shop" had such caring employees. The first words uttered when we were ready to do business was impressive. Natalie said "Let's talk. How do you want your hair?" We took about ten minutes discussing how she was going to style my hair, identifying the problem areas, and offering solutions. From that point, I trusted her. And I'm not even exaggerating. I started off by having my hair washed by Daniella, who was affable and comforting. I told her that I found Alicia's at Yelp's and promised her that I would go out of my way to write a raving review. Thank you for the warm towel treatment. It definitely got the little hairs off my face! Natalie then proceeded with her craft while we chatted about local restaurants, even suggesting some to me. She was cutting my hair skillfully and explaining the reasons why it behaves that way. Since my hair was our little project, Natalie explained to me when I should go back for a trim, as well as products to use to achieve the look I wanted. The result was incredible! It was just how I wanted! I cannot wait until it grows out fully, but I am definitely one step closer to the guy's hair on my iPhone. Great job, Natalie! I highly recommend going to Alicia's. I've been very fortunate to find Jackie, now at Alicia's Hair in Montclair. She is both a gifted colorist and cutter, a rare combination. In fact I followed her from her previous salon to Alicia's. The staff at Alicia's is absolutely lovely, incredibly attentive and super friendly. I always look forward to my next appointment. (the shampoo chairs are the most comfortable anywhere!) My hair always looks superb. When I first went to Jackie my hair was terribly dry and damaged from coloring and was a single, artificial-looking blonde. It had no life or dimension. I fully expected to be told that it would have to be cut off. The first time I saw her she spent a great deal of time consulting first to see what I wanted. She cut it and it was fabulous! I had NEVER had such a great cut. The blow-out was also fab and she took the time to teach me how to do it at home. (Not that I can recreate the magic, but I try.) So I went back and discussed color with her. She identified the problems with the color and suggested that lowlights would add dimension and a natural look. It is utterly fabulous. The condition is amazing thanks to the products the salon uses and recommended for me.(They even gave me trial samples so I could buy what I liked best!) I have NEW hair. (She also does my daughter's hair when she's home from college in Paris and truthfully her work is superior to the cuts and color Ellen has had in Paris, France. That's really saying something!)
