I've been very fortunate to find Jackie, now at Alicia's Hair in Montclair. She is both a gifted colorist and cutter, a rare combination. In fact I followed her from her previous salon to Alicia's. The staff at Alicia's is absolutely lovely, incredibly attentive and super friendly. I always look forward to my next appointment. (the shampoo chairs are the most comfortable anywhere!) My hair always looks superb. When I first went to Jackie my hair was terribly dry and damaged from coloring and was a single, artificial-looking blonde. It had no life or dimension. I fully expected to be told that it would have to be cut off. The first time I saw her she spent a great deal of time consulting first to see what I wanted. She cut it and it was fabulous! I had NEVER had such a great cut. The blow-out was also fab and she took the time to teach me how to do it at home. (Not that I can recreate the magic, but I try.) So I went back and discussed color with her. She identified the problems with the color and suggested that lowlights would add dimension and a natural look. It is utterly fabulous. The condition is amazing thanks to the products the salon uses and recommended for me.(They even gave me trial samples so I could buy what I liked best!) I have NEW hair. (She also does my daughter's hair when she's home from college in Paris and truthfully her work is superior to the cuts and color Ellen has had in Paris, France. That's really saying something!) I just moved here from the Philly area and am very OCD about my hair. I am very loyal to my hairdressers if they do a good job and I was stressed about finding someone good. I read great reviews on this site for Alicia's and tried them. I had a great experience and they are now my go to hairdresser. They are all friendly and nice and the young girl Kim who did my hair really knows her color. The only issue if there is one is parking since it is in town center. I went last time around the Holidays so that might have been the problem. There is a parking lot right behind the salon though. read more

I called them a week ago for an appointment and they were able to open the store early for me, which is fantastic because I never have a lot of free time. Nick is the best. I always get a good hair cut. He knows exactly what I'm trying to explain. There is never a really long wait. They offer you coffee upon your arrival. One downside- I wish the color station was more comfortable. Appointments are easy to make and get. Prices are very reasonable. read more

I went after my old salon simultaneously didn't do a great job on my color + implemented a no kids on site in the salon EVER policy. Last time I got my hair done my sitter cancelled & I ended up needing to bring my kids to Hair At Alicia's which I felt really bad about. Alicia put a show on for them in the back & all the employees were really sweet about it. This kind of thing may not matter to most but for moms it can mean the difference between getting your hair done, or not. So I really appreciate this place both for their skills & overall warmth. I recently had a trim and some color low lights (baby lights) applied to my hair at Hair 491. I went on the recommendation of a work colleague who also had had baby lights and whose hair looks gorgeous. This was my first time at Hair 491. When I walked in, there were no other customers there. Immediately, Nick and Kim made me feel like a queen, as if I had my own salon. Nick was as gentle as can be and thoroughly discussed my concerns with me. Together, we planned a strategy. Meanwhile Kim kept a listening ear, magically appeared with whatever we needed, and joined the discussion at points with her thoughtful and knowledgeable comments. The hair washer, whose name I can't recall, was also very sweet and gentle. In Nick's capable hands, the result was wonderful. I tipped Nick and the hair washer, but not Kim. I recently got my hair cut at Alicia's and my stylist was Natalie. I am a perfectionist when it comes to my hair and Natalie gave me the best hair cut I have had in years! She spent about 10 minutes talking with me before she even started cutting and she asked me all the right questions. She was patient, friendly, highly skilled, and a great listener. I was impressed with her and the entire salon. The decor is modest, cute, and funky...it reminds me of a place I used to go years ago when I lived in Brooklyn. I will definitely be back to Alicia's! Just had a Keratin treatment done last night, I have very short hair and it was no easy task. Katie was patient and truly took her time and used that flat iron eight (8) times per section. It came out great, in my opinion it's all in how you apply the product and then flat iron to give the best results. Thanks, Katie...Definately will do it again when it's time. read more

Finally, a NJ salon that feels like a small, trendy, East Village shop. Funky, friendly and so professional without being pretentious. These girls keep up with the latest trends (Natalie did Bayalage highlights on my hair, hand painted, totally natural) and the cut I wanted for a fraction of what you would pay in NYC. Natalie spent a great deal of time with me before cutting and coloring, asking a ton of questions, and getting to know my hair and my personality. I've had my hair cut several times at Alicias by Kim L. I 've had color as well with her too. I really like this her work and this salon. It has a professional but laid back vibe to it. The staff is friendly and down to earth. I like that there is a warm/welcoming feeling and not a "stand-off-ish" feeling like many other Montclair salons. I found Natalie a few years ago...she is the BEST! She listens and then gives me advice on what I should do....and she is confident in what she does. I got lazy for a year for several reasons and didn't want to take the drive to Montclair and boy was I sorry. She is still patiently fixing what was done to my hair but now I am almost back to where I was when I left and my hair seems to grow at miraculous speeds when she cuts it because I don't have to spend all that time blowdrying it and trying to make it do what it doesn't want to do. She is fun and down to earth and it almost goes by too quickly while she is cutting my hair... in addition, she is a great restaurant critic and always gives me great advice on where to eat! I have been going here for about two years now and I've never left unhappy. Before working with Kim T I had never colored my hair at all. She was super understanding of my concerns and each time I went we gradually eased into more and more color. I just went today for a cut, color, and blow-out. I wanted a knowledgeable stylist because I felt indecisive about what I wanted to do with my hair. Everyone was incredibly friendly, from the first phone call to the actual appointment. (I used to go to a salon where getting someone on the phone to make the appointment was half the challenge). Jackie was able to tell me what colors went best with my skin tone, knowing already which shades leave me washed out when some stylists might just assume that since I'm fair-skinned my hair should automatically be light. She also listened to what *I* wanted, which is important to me. She did nothing without making sure I was on board. As I was indecisive, she gave me options and was patient and helpful with the decision. She also suggested a really fun cut instead of the plain layers I am used to getting, and I'm thrilled with the result. It was a little pricey but then I needed a lot of work and was prepared to pay for it; I came in with a fried mop on my head. I have been working on a project in the Pine Brook/Fairfield area of NJ. My hair was beginning to really get on my nerves and I had some spare time to finally get it cut. I normally get it cut in Chicago because I found someone several years ago that really did exactly what I asked. So I began the task of find a hair salon and used Yelp to make my decision! I finally searched the reviews and found Hair at Alicia's and a stylist named Nick. Nick listened, took in what I told him, considered the thickness and I gave him the go ahead and do as he felt would fit my lifestyle. When he was finished, I felt it was a work of art! Nick was extremely friendly and his personality was so earthy. I wish I did not live so far away because I would not hesitate to come back to Nick and make this my exclusive stylist! I am very picky when it comes to who I let cut my hair and that comes from some bad cuts in my past!
