I have been going to her for a while, I have moved out of Toronto to the USA and whenever I came for a visit I make a special trip just to see her. I am back in town and although I live by transit 1.5 hrs away I continue to travel to her. I do not wish to have anyone else touch me. I have tried others close to my current residence in Markham and I have regretted it. For example this other person would zap my hair and pull at it and it felt as if I was pulling out the hair with my own personal tweezer, painful with no results, and when I complained to she stated it was a "dorment hair", if it was dorment I would not have felt the pain each and every time.....NEVER AGAIN. I love Movita! This…read morewas my first time going to the hairdresser and it was a very fun experience. Movita Cole, the owner, leads a very professional and passionate team of hair experts. I came to get my hair done for an "Old Hollywood" themed formal affair. As soon as I arrived, I hung up my coat and Alicia washed my hair 3 times with sulfate-free shampoo. She wasn't afraid to massage my scalp and really get in there to ensure my hair was clean and ready for the next step. Next, she straightened my hair with a blowdryer-comb (a blowout I believe?) then handed me over to Movita herself. I showed Movita my fascinator, and as she took care of straightening my hair even further, she regaled me with tales and pictures of a memorable event and tips for healthier hair (get trims and use mayonnaise on wash days). As she worked she used the opportunity to teach an apprentice as well (hopefully one of them will take over when she retires). It is obvious she sets a high standard for the quality of work done in her salon. Movita has been in the York University area for over 20 years; she is a community-minded individual and key player in the Keele and Finch area. She gave me a trim (I wasn't originally planning on getting one but according to her I needed it and her explanation made sense -- chopping off split ends stops them from damaging the ends and moving up the hair shaft). I did see a difference at the trim, and she didn't take off a traumatising amount of hair, as I've heard some hairdressers do. Finally, she used a hot iron to add curls and attitude to my 'do. She even showed me the best place to put my fascinator. I was very happy with the final product-- my hair looked so full and beautiful. It has been over a week since the event and my hair is still shiny, soft and straight (for the most part). I'm surprised it's not dry or nappy yet but this lady and her staff worked some kind of magic. Long story short: fabulous black hairdresser for women and men alike (although beards are not her focus.) In the building across the street from Finch West station. Go here!
