Probably one of the worst hair cuts I've ever received. Not only did the hair stylist cut off about a foot of my hair (no exaggeration here), but I specifically begged for him to take off as little as possible about 9 times. The hair is also not blended and sits in this weird short puff. Just awful. The blow dry was also just a disgrace. I asked for straight with a small curl on the end and I walked out looking like the 80's threw up on my hair. This place is also super snobby. I walked in wearing a sweatshirt and jeans and the looks I got the entire time I was there were overwhelming. I was also take 30 minutes late for my appointment. Horrible. read more

My initial visit at Hairo with Brianna was truly amazing. When I moved to MA from CT, I had a hard time finding a salon that understood my hair texture and it's needs so I was thrilled when I found Hairo. As an Afro-Caribbean woman with natural hair it can be difficult to find a good place for a proper blow dry in general. Unfortunately, my second visit was very uncomfortable. My account was flagged in some way because as soon as I arrived I was greeted by the manager of that location in addition to the receptionist. They were waiting to inform me that unlike any other customer, I would be charged per half hour for my visit. I can't explain how hurtful it was to be singled out near the entrance like that. I understood where this was coming from (to some extent) - my hair texture takes more time to straighten than people that have naturally straight hair - but there soooo much room for improvement in the way the information was delivered. As a result of my second experience, I decided to cancel the appointment and made a choice to never return to Hairo. read more

I'm really bummed to write this review since I really like Hairo. I went in over the weekend to get a blowdry for my birthday with Ariel. She did an amazing job with my hair but the next morning, I woke up with burns on my ear from the blowdryer. The top of my ear was bright red and had painful burn blisters on it. I emailed Hairo twice with pictures of my burned ear and still haven't heard back three days later. I'm super disappointed with this experience and hope Hairo will eventually contact me to apologize. read more

Only thing I'd recommend is that the management looks over its web presence, b/c we looked up all the details and set an appointment looking at a web page that had old prices on it. The price was double what we expected from the web site and it wasn't clear in person. Unfortunately, this effected the tip but I am going to get in there as soon as I can and correct that matter. I'm promiscuous with my hair salons. I tend to jump from stylist to stylist, always on a quest for a better haircut. My relationship with Boston hair dressers since moving here has been a series of awkward first-dates that never really progress any further. My last stylist saw me twice...but then I didn't come back for literally a full year. So.... On a whim, a few weeks ago, I decided I wanted to cut my hair and get bangs. that night. ...and I wasn't taking no for an answer. I put a message out across my social networks and a friend of mine suggested to me via twitter that I give Sami a try. I was psyched when she could fit me in that night. She asked all the right questions, took her time getting to know more about my hair, and gave me a cut that has since inspired at least 3 friends to visit her for their own hairstyles. The cut is effortless, has style, and is EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED!! she didn't take off too much length, she made me my tired style look cool, and showed me ways i could style it, easily, because I am a complete moron when it comes to doing my own hair. Better yet, when I went back and visited 2 days later to see if she could take a little length off my bangs she was able to squeeze me in on the spot while her other clients highlights set. This past weekend, my friend was in town & loved my new hairstyle. We were able to book her a cut on a Saturday afternoon and she walked out feeling like a million bucks. A woman literally stopped both of us and told us how grea tour hair looked (Sami gave me a lil trimmeroo and straightened my hair...fabulous! thank youuuu!) and basically said to her stylist she wanted her hair cut JUST like my friends. Do you get a bigger compliment? no. not possible. From now on, Rock, Paper Scissors is my jam. Tony cut my hair here. I told him I was growing it out, and that I wanted to continue to be able to put it in a ponytail. The good news: the cut was pretty great for my hair. The bad news: after the cut, I could not put it in a ponytail. He noted this, and said, "You shouldn't be wearing it in a ponytail, anyway." Although my hair admittedly looks fantastic, it's kind of a dick move to take the length decision out of my hands, and ultimately, the paternalistic approach would keep me from returning here if I still lived in Boston. Loved this place! Went on a recommendation from a friend and was really happy with everything. Sometimes you just get bored with your hair and need a change and they were perfect for a fun new hair style. I had a wash, cut and blowdry. They start with sitting you down and asking some questions about your normal routine (what do you normally do to style your hair, how does it naturally fall, how much time do you take prepping in the morning, etc.). The stylist looked at my hair, got my answers, and gave her opinion on what might work. I agreed and she got to work. The cut took a while (I have really thick hair). She cut it, blowdried it, then cut it again when dry. When it was done, I was hoping for it to be a bit shorter, and she was fine with making the extra cuts. Overall, I was really impressed with this funky little shop on Newbury Street. A cut for $45? Unheard of in this neighborhood. I'll definitely be back! read more

I experienced an extremely disappointing service at Hairo. I booked an appointment for a curl and half up-do for a wedding with the receptionist who assured me the stylist could do it. I went in, expressing my concerns to Ariel (my stylist) and showed her what I wanted done. She said she could get another stylist to do it. Long story short, the stylists could not accomplish it and it came out awful! I seriously could've done better. I kept expressing my concern with time and saying if they don't know how to do it to please just curl it and pin it back so it was out of my face. As soon as the wasted hour was up, Ariel rudely told me she has another appointment. Her frustration was clear and she was completely rude and unprofessional towards the end of my visit. I ended up walking out (with the service compensated) and had 20 minutes to do my own hair before the black tie event. Overall, be sure to communicate exactly what you want to ensure you will get it without wasting your time. This was THE worst hair experience. read more

I got a really bad haircut there. I have long hair and the guy who cut my hair cut it with a razor????? Are you kidding me? I understand to trim the bangs with a razor but the whole hair?? It looked really bad-the ends were all white for a while. He did the color nice though. While I was waiting for my appointment another girl was cutting a customer's hair(long hair). She didn't use a razor but she couldn't even cut it straight in the back. Overall, BDA HAIR SALON!! I made a last minute appointment to get my hair done here before a party on a Saturday night. They were great about fitting me in and getting me in and out quickly. My stylist was really good about listening to what I wanted...glamorous, big, soft waves. I walked out of here in less than an hour (and it usually takes way longer to deal with all my hair) with a fantastic do that lasted for quite some time, for $35. Pretty good deal if you ask me. The only bad thing about this place is that you have to have cash to tip, which is definitely really #awkward since I didn't have any. Make sure to stop by an ATM on the way here! read more

This is a new salon, sister to Enzo and Co. right down the street! I headed here last week in a desperate attempt to fix a botched haircut I received from Salon Luna in Porter Square. A friend with awesome hair gave me the heads up on this place..if only I knew about it before! ALL haircuts are $45 flat as part of their philosophy- $45 on Newbury Street! I love it! It was a chill environment and everyone was really nice, no snobbishness. Mia was excellent and very knowledgeable about how to approach my thick, wavy/curly hair. Went back as they sent me a coupon where if I brought in a friend we'd both get 50% off. This time I saw Tony, the owner, and only got a cut because I was afraid of what the color might turn out to be this time. He did a fantastic cut and spent a lot of time on it. It was a Friday night and I went out that night and got a lot of comments on how good it looked! Since he did so well, I decided to come back and get my color done by him. That also turned out great - and I even was a bit iffy about it at first because it was so dark, but it's faded just a teeny bit and I LOVE it now! I'm not gonna give the place 5 stars yet, because of my experience with Sammy, but if it was based on Tony alone it'd be a full 5 stars! ***Update 2/12*** 5 Stars!! Tony is now my go-to guy on the East Coast! While i've moved to NYC, I've come to him every time I come back up to Boston. As someone who is still relatively new to the city, I have been on a quest for my new stylist. The first place I attempted on Newbury St was overpriced and not worth it. Rock Paper Scissors Salon was good but I am not sure if it will be my new permanent salon or if I will try somewhere else next time. I was very excited that I called in two days before and was able to get an appointment. I had my hair cut by Sami. She was nice but didn't really talk very much. She was also in the process of dying someone else's hair and would leave me periodically. I understand, it is a good way to maximize your time but I was making a drastic hair change and wanted her to walk me through it and let me know how it was going to turn out, which she was unable to do. Anytime I would ask her how something would be, she would say that she just had to do it to find out. My haircut ended up looking great, but I was very nervous for most of it and just wanted some reassurance that it was going to turn out how I envisioned it. All in all, I am pleased with the haircut, but I am still undecided on whether I will return here or continue the quest for a new stylist. read more

Went in yesterday for my first blow out ever. I saw Roberto and he did a great job! I didn't know exactly what to ask for but the end result was awesome. At first it felt a little too voluminous but knowing that it would fall a little bit as it settled, it ended up being perfect. The style held all night and even after I slept on it it's still in pretty decent shape for day 2. Definitely worth $35. The appointment is booked for 45 minutes but I was in and out in about 30. I have been growing my hair out since I was in Jr. High after a traumatic hair cutting experience. I would just go in for a trim and nothing more. Everything was all one length. After about 10 years of having the same hair style I decided to branch out and get some layers. I went to Salon back home in NM and basically got a horrible butchered cut. I let it grow for about 3 months while doing some seriously anal research about salons in Boston. I would literally go up to random girls on the street that had a hair style that looked like something I wanted and would ask them where they got it cut, I had a little book that I would take notes in with the name of the Salons and the persons name who cut their hair. After yelp review reading and salon website browsing I landed on Rock Paper Scissors Salon, and a stylist named Tony (whom is also the owner.) I came in and explained my fears about hair cuts, told him what I was looking for and explained why my hair was such a hack job. After combing it out I could see the look in his face of "what was that stylist thinking when she cut her hair." He did an incredible job. He evened everything out and made it beautiful. You cant even tell that there was ever a bad cut in there. I only got a cut, but I think I will go and try one of their Keratine treatments (50% off right now!!!) and maybe a color. I think this is my new hair stylist in Boston. Also, for Newbury, I felt like the prices were really affordable. Keep it up RPS!!! read more

Absolutely the best hair salon I have ever been to! I walk in and the receptionist was super friendly and helpful with me! I didn't know the vocab used there and she helped me understand everything and the price so I knew what I was getting and what I was paying for it! I came in with honestly 4 different shades of blonde in my hair from bleach to a copper. And my hair dresser (Ashley) told me it would be hard to get the color I wanted since I had so much going on. She got the owner and they came up with a game plan for my hair and explained everything they wanted to do to my hair to me. During the process Ashley talked to me like we were old friends and made sure I was happy with everything going on! The vibe in the room was GREAT! All the coworkers got along so well it put me in an amazing mood. When it came to highlighting my hair Ashley asked for help so they all could be finished around the same time and the lady who helped was just as wonderful! While I was waiting for time to pass I was offered water, magazines and anything else I could think of. After my hair was washed out Ashley dried a portion of my hair to make sure I liked the outcome and I LOVE it. I am very tender headed too and the whole time I was never in pain! This is the first time that has ever happen to me. I will definitely be back! Just make sure you bring cash for tips and no American Express cards to pay. read more

Ashley is awesome. As someone who gets blowouts on a weekly basis, I really need to remember this place. I normally go to Dry Bar because I get gift cards, but for $5 cheaper Hairo does just as amazing job, with less fuss. I've gone to Ashley a few times now and completely trust her. She may take 5-10 mins more than the others, but it's because she does it right. My blowouts last 3-4 days, granted I probably have good hair for it, but she doesn't use a ton of product which helps make it last longer. Thanks hairo! I work in the area, so I go here at least once every 2 weeks for a blow out. The price point is great ($35 for a blow out) so sometimes I go when I don't even have a special occasion coming up. I usually see Gina who does a good job and blows my hair out very quickly considering it is curly, thick and long, but everyone does a good job. Can't beat the price,convenience and results. I had my hair done by Mia. She was wonderful. Not much of a talker which is exactly what I want when I'm getting pampered. I love just reading and having someone worry about my hair. She was a wonderful blow dryer but she took off to many inches. Luckily i have the mentality that it is just hair and grows back and thankfully she did a wonderful job. Unfortunately here you have to watch to make sure they aren't taking off too much and exactly what you want. I was kind of scared because I usually get my hair cut by Asian people since they know how to work with my thick hair. Had nothing to worry about - the end result exceeded my expectations. So what happened was: I walked in, was greeted by the receptionist, got seated, met my stylist Kat (She's cool, down to earth, and is really into art), we talked about what I wanted to do with my hair, got my hair washed, and then the cut began. I came to Hairo, honestly, because DryBar was booked and I was determined to get a blowout on my vacation even though i didn't have anywhere really special that I was going that night. I'm not gonna lie, I was bummed initially that i didn't make a res in time to get into DryBar and went into my appointment at Hairo feeling a little deflated but I was singing a whole different tune when I walked out of there 45 minutes later looking & feeling totally gorgeous. Kari did an AMAZING job on my long, pretty curly & sometimes super annoying and frizzy hair. She asked what look I was going for and I was too hungover to think of an answer, so she just laughed and went at it. I looked like one of Charlie's Angels when she was finished. She was awesome & we had a great time talking and laughing the whole time she was working....and I'm not usually a talker at the salon, especially when I had one too many glasses of vino the night before and mostly just want a nap. The salon is cute, bright, clean & simple and the price was perfect. The style held up all night and I felt fab. Having never been to a "dry bar" before I was looking forward to it and had high hopes. It was my best friends bachelorette so I thought it would be fun to get our hair done before we go out. I made a reservation for 3 people 2 at 5:15 and one at 5 (they couldn't do us all together) we ran into tons of traffic on storrow so I called at 4:50 to let them know we would be late. We arrived at 5:16 and they took my two friends right away and didn't even sit them best to eachother until I requested it since the bride was sitting alone!?! I stood around waiting ( no one ever showed me to a chair or waiting room) then finally two girls told me since I was late they couldn't take me until after 6 BUT they have a sister salon next door I could go to for $5 more. Since I was the one who planned our appointments and needed my hair done I went to the salon next door ALONE without my friends and got my hair done. The real kicker was when I was charged $10 MORE not $5. So while my friends sat together and got their hair done for $35 I sat upstairs alone and paid $45. To top it all off my friends hair fell out within 30 minutes. I honestly don't even think they used prep, dry or hair spray. The women I went to at Enzo salon was great and I will review them separate. read more

Love this place- their space is bright and trendy and their staff are so friendly! They have coffee/tea/etc for while you are there and always lots of magazines. I get my hair done by Ariel and she is wonderful! I was nervous the first time but she listened to exactly what I wanted and I've returned for her a few times since. Highly recommend her! They sell their own products which smell amazing, but are a tad too pricey for me sadly. Their prices are very reasonable- you won't find a blowout in the city for less than $35 (which is what they charge). Haircuts are $60 regardless of length which is pretty reasonable, I used to go to G20 Salon on Newbury Street and a junior stylist there cost me $50. One tip is to make sure you have cash- they don't have an ATM and you have to tip cash. read more

I've come here for a blow out twice now, and have another one booked. My first appointment was with Ryan and I left feeling like a million bucks. My hair was wavy and voluminous and lasted for days. I was hooked, and would go every week if I could. The second time I couldn't get Ryan and had someone else, unfortunately it fell flat that same day, so it was a bit disappointing; but it was still ok. I don't think Ryan is here anymore, so I now go to Briana and she's amazing. She can get tons of volume in my thin, blonde hair and it lasts! The front desk staff are super nice and helpful. Even helping me to get my luggage up the stairs since I was heading to a flight. It really has a great vibe, cute and trendy; and at $35 for a blow out I think its a great deal. I would like to try some of the other services like a deep conditioning treatment with a blow out, especially in between cuts. Also, booking is super easy online, and allows you to check times and stylist availability. Overall I would definitely recommend checking this place out. read more

I told her the length I wanted and my personal style (girly, preppy, clasic) and she made it look amazing. She explaned why she was doing what she was doing, and it made so much sense and looked great. I came back again a week ago with a very specific idea and some pictures. Again, I got a great cut. My stylist did what I asked, but fixed it a little so that my awkward curly frizzy waves look cute when they air dry. (I can by lazy about styling.) Awesome! Sadly, I took my friend and Roger butchered her hair. Nothing like what she asked for, and looked terrible. I looked at her and squeeked "Oh... it's so.... different." We both cracked up. I've been here 3 times now and I walk away each time VERY happy. For a person who has super curly, frizzy hair and once thought that her hair stylist was the only one who knew how to blow dry, this place was a huge eye opener. They are great at what they do and listen to what you want. To add, I booked a party of 6 on my wedding rehearsal day and they were very accommodating and professional. I changed the reservation probably 3 times and they made it work for me. During the appointment, since we were pinched for time, they had us go in 2 shifts and we were done in a flash and off to lunch with our fabulous hair styles. They made the rehearsal day a breeze and we all felt amazing! Also, because they use so little hair product, my hair easily went into an updo for my big day as the bride. What a great cut! I moved to Boston from Atlanta about 18 months ago and haven't really taken the time to find a good salon here. I kind of "stumbled upon" this salon via boredom at work and good old Craigslist. They were looking for participants for a free haircut. The only stipulation was you had to be willing to do something new with your hair which was fine for me. Walking in I was warmly greeted by multiple people. Travis, who was at the front desk, asked if he could get me any water or take my coat. Once I was in my seat Ashley and Tony came over to talk to me about what I was looking to do with my hair, etc. They really listened to what I had to say while also giving me valuable feedback. We decided on an angled bob hitting right below my chin which sounded like a great upgrade from my then long, stringy, needed-to-be-trimmed hair. Ashley was very nice and kept asking me if I was comfortable while washing and conditioning my hair. She spent a lot of time making sure she was cutting just right and Tony would pop over every few minutes to offer advice, suggestions, etc. I think they do the free hair cutting services for teaching and training purposes so I wouldn't expect the owner to come over all the time if I was a regular, paying client but it was appreciated nonetheless. This was the first time in my life that I knew I was going to like a cut while it was still wet. That's how good it was. I'm used to having very long hair. I donated it to locks of love last year and dealt with the short hair, but I've never really been a huge fan of short hair. I now think that's because I just never had a good short hair cut. Up until I was 15, I've only allowed 2 people cut my hair, and one of them was my mother. Within the last 6 years, I've managed to some how let an additional 7 people experiment with my hair. I wouldn't say that I'm very 'picky' with hairdressers, but obviously once a do goes wrong, you're never going to see my face at the at Salon EVER again. BUT I have found someone I do trust with my hair. I've been going to Rock Paper Scissors for a little over 2 years now and it was really a coincidence on how I ended up there. I was going through a phase, when the 'semi/half shaved' hairstyle was starting up, and decided one day, while walking down Newbury, that 'HEY! I kinda wanna do a semi shave', and whatta do ya know! I ended up walking by RPS. I walked in, asked if anyone was available, Roger was, and ever since then, he's taken me under his wings. I was quite nervous about the cut, I've never really done anything that out of the box, it's normally just regular trims, cuts, layers, bangs, and bobs for me, so to shave a good 4" by 5" inch off of my hair, that was a bit startling, but Roger made me feel very comfortable, and totally supported the idea, which was just the push I needed! He talked me through it, step by step, as he was trimming the hair, buzzing the hair, and pretty much completing the look. The other hair stylists made me feel even more comfortable by coming over, and chit chatting it up, in reference to how 'good' it looked. (I'm sure it's their job to say things like that, but it's pretty much what I needed to hear at that time). That was quite a milestone for me, and because Roger did do a good job, I decided to give the Salon another shot, and came back the next time for haircut. I normally just stick with the basics, when it comes to my hair. I still get trims, and layers, and every now and then, I'll get chinadoll or side sweep bangs, I've even gotten a keratin treatment/perm there, so I've gotten to know the ropes a bit more, and I've been able to see Roger's techniques more. I was in town visiting my good friend and realized her new haircut looked great. Since we had some time, I decided to try out her new stylist/salon. I hate cutting my hair (long, very thick, my pride and joy) but also realized I really needed to trim it a bit. We were able to book an appointment with Sami for Saturday. Sami spends time asking exactly what you want and actually listens (other stylists, take note. Just because you charge $150 to cut hair doesn't mean you can ignore your clients.) I asked for a minimal trim and for some layers to add movement. I didn't want anything thinned out or to lose any length. For the first time in years, I left a salon actually giddy about my haircut. And the price absolutely cannot be beat. If I lived in Boston, this would be my new salon for a cut (cannot comment on color, that's a whole new ball game). My hair looked so amazing that as I was getting my coat, a woman came up to me and asked "when the front desk asked me what I wanted my hair to look like, I pointed at you and said 'HERS.'" Seriously, when a random person walks into a salon to get your haircut because it looks that good, you know you've struck haircutting gold. They also play great music and I like the no frills, no attitude, no bullshit feeling. read more

I saw the sign for 50% off keratin, I had to check it out. The helpful receptionist dude explained the price ($50, usually $100)), that it lasts 6-8 weeks, so not the long term keratin I've had, no formaldehyde, don't wash hair for 48 hours, and they can take me right away. That part was great. Then he introduced me to Roger, who would be doing my hair. He was friendly and enthusiastic and said I came to the right person for a haircut.. i explained I only want the keratin. He then spent 5 minutes pointing out the flaws in my current haircut. Funny, how I had gotten 2 compliments just the day before! I explained that I am getting my haircut when i get back to DC (at my favorite Immortal Beloved salon!). He then got surly and unfriendly for the next hour. he did a pretty good job on my hair, but it was a quite uncomfortable atmosphere. It's been a few days after washing it and it's straighter than it was but not stick straight (for $50 I didn't expect perfection) I would give it another star but Roger's attitude was so bad. read more

I highly recommend Hairo for everything. They have the best blowouts in the City. The vibe here is casual, cool and easygoing. The staff and owners are appreciative of business and accomodating. I recommend Brianna for blowouts, she gives me EXACTLY what I want, every single time. She's consistent, knows how to work with bonded extensions and is extremely fun to chat with.
