The woman I spoke to was kind, informative and professional. I left that conversation with every thought that we chose the correct funeral home. Then my mother-in-law had to be taken to the emergency room, and we were given the notice that we needed to place her in Hospice. After she passed on August 3rd, Hospice contacted Southern Cremation Funeral Homes. I called them that day but did not get an answer. Then I called on the 4th, I called four times, and the office called me back around noon. Kay said that my husband had to come to the funeral home to sign paperwork. I explained that he could come in as he works 14-hour days. I told her that we were both her legal guardians, and I could, and she cut me off. She said he HAD to come in, as next of kin. And I said he could not that he had to work, but I could. She started yelling at this point and just kept reiterating the same verbiage. I said, you are asking for something that cannot be done. And finally, after a few minutes, THEN she said that it could be done online. All of that time, frustration and outright rudeness could have been avoided with two things, 1, that it could be done online. 2, that she could have asked a supervisor if I had the authority since I was her legal guardian. I left the conversation shaking with anger. We filled out the paperwork online. I waited and did not hear anything. I called on the 6th and was told that she was ready to be picked up. I asked why I had not been called, and they said that they had been busy and that the death certificates were not ready, and they assumed that I would not want to pick her up without them. I told them that I could wait on that, we just wanted to have her back. I came to the funeral home and a nice gentleman helped me. I had to wait about five minutes to get her and the paperwork. At no point did he ask me if I was her guardian or anything. They said it would be a week or so for the death certificates and they would call me as soon as they came in. I waited. I finally called today (17 days after she passed) to see about the certificates. Kay answered the phone again and I asked about them. She put me on hold and said she had them. I asked when she got them and why did they not call, and she immediately bristled and said they came yesterday afternoon, and she was organizing them to call me. She practically spit it out. This is who they having been the first contact for grieving families. This made us feel like we are lucky to have them perform this service. I wish I had never used their company. When you are only performing a cremation, you would think that customer service would not be so hard to give. I picked them up today. I was not greeted at the front desk, and I sat in the waiting room for 20 minutes before I got up and tried to find someone. There were two different people in two different rooms waiting to talk to someone. I found two women in a back office and explained I was there to pick up our death certificates. They said they would be with me but did not apologize and barely glanced at me. I waited 10 more minutes and the man that gave me her remains, came in and helped me. He was kind as usual. I noticed on the release form that they were not ordered until the 10th, and they were actually picked up two days ago. So, they were not ordered until five days after her cremation and not picked up at the date she said. If I was a family waiting on a life insurance policy to cover costs, this would have been insulting. Luckily that is not an issue for us.
