I've been looking for a vintage stand mixer for a while now, one of those indestructibly- built ones from the 1960s or 70s from companies which no longer make them, like Phillips, or Sunbeam and with metal parts (not plastic- the fact that they are super heavy is how you know). I don't want Kitchenaid or whatever. My cousin got a Sunbeam one for $50 from the 1950s and it's still going strong. I didn't find what I was looking for, but the fun of these kinds of places is that it never hurts to look. This place has stalls and stalls of old vintage stuff and at a fraction of the prices bearded hipsters with man-buns will charge you in Toronto. Paintings, Depression-era glass glassware and dining ware, fine bone china tea cups, Waterford crystal, nested Pyrex mixing bowls. You just have to know what you're looking for.

I drove it up to the shop (an hour drive) and Llyod (the head technician and store owner) sat with me for 2hrs, walking me through the issues and fixing them as we went. Nothing major to be fixed, just some small adjustments that made a world of difference. The level of care and service was tremendous. I would highly recommend. YouTube offered some help but not much. To my delight, I discovered that there was a bona fide djembe drum specialist not 5 minutes away. For about a year I took beginner lessons with Phil (Shaw) and learned the proper djembe techniques and a good half-dozen genuine djembe rhythms and their alternates -- probably 18-20 authentic djembe rhythms in all. Thanks to Phil I have gotten good use out of my drum and even had the opportunity to play publicly. Phil and Wendy host regular jam sessions around town. You can bring your own drum or rent one for the day. I've participated with my wife and kids and we all had a blast.
