Why helloooo chicken and rice!!! This is reminiscent of all those famous NY Halal carts and one has finally reached Philadelphia! You should've seen the excitement in my face when I saw those bright colored signs of lamb and chicken. I'm not sure where they pull the meats from because there's no rotating halal meat thing like in NY but that's ok. For only $5, you get yourself a delicious plate of yellow rice, chunks of lamb (instead of thinly sliced), chicken, shredded lettuce, cucumber, and tomato. And the best part?? Of course, it's the WHITE SAUCE!! :) They also offer two types of hot sauces (mild and spicy). Mild was a bit too mild and spicy was a bit too spicy. I wish there was a medium. You also get a soda can along with this price. Anyway, in comparison to the NY 56th and 6th Ave, this tastes healthier and less creamy (which isnt necessarily a bad thing). I don't think anything can compare to the NY one but I didn't expect this to. I LOVE the NY for how fatty and creamy it is, but this alternative could be something that could be eaten on a more normal basis. It definitely fills the craving and left me a happy camper. I'm a fan! I was going to give this place a 4, because the food is great, but the exceptional service is what brought this over the top. So let's talk about this place. Food: I got the chicken over rice, and it came with that as well as salad and a drink. That's all for $5! $5!! The chicken was tender and paired well with the "green sauce" which I think is cilantro, "white sauce", which I have no idea what it is, but make sure you get extra, and "red sauce" which is chili sauce. These sauces are drizzled over the top of the plate, making for an elegant, yet scrumptious meal. Service: This was amazing. It was my first time there, but the owner was friendly, prompt, and knew his clientele. He had regulars that comes every day and he knew their orders by heart. Though it took a few extra minutes for me to get my food (he was making it from scratch), I got the chance to see how he interacts with others, and you can tell that he has a pretty loyal customer base. I don't work near Penn Presbysterian yet, but when I do - you can be sure that I'll try to make this a regular spot for me. read more

These guys are fantastic. I'm always greeted with a smile, and the lamb is always cooked amazingly. I literally get lunch here three times a week. The prices are incredible for the amount of food you get, + a free soda. So. Freaking. Good. Oh, and DON'T support their competition on 13th and Chestnut. Their stupid bright lights and flashy marquee to attract business doesn't cover up their attitude and lacking meat portions. The competition reminds me of exploited advertising methods while the Halal Gyro King cart reminds me of good, honest business :) read more

Located across the street from Penn - Presbyterian Medical Center sits a great little food cart. I eat from here whenever my lunch break allows - 5 or 6 bucks gets you a nice container of lamb or chicken over rice, seasoned well and never dry or over cooked. PLUS a can of soda! Best lunch deal ever, particularly as the food is delicious. Ask for extra green sauce...I don't know what it is but damn is it good! Since nobody has written about their falafel yet, I figured I'd add a review and risk having falafel lovers flocking here and buying it all up before I can get to lunch. The falafel is AMAZING! I've eaten a lot of dry tasteless falafel in my life, to the point I thought maybe I just don't like falafel. This cart has changed me. I get a falafel and rice 1-3 times a week, and it never gets old. The only thing I would warn about is that the spiciness of the extra hot sauce can be inconsistent. Some days it is pretty mild and others youll be sweating profusely. I personally love it hot and am a bit disappointed on the days it is not so hot. However, spicy or not this is five-star falafel. read more

this cart turns out some pretty tasty eats for cheap. 5 usd will get you a no-frills lunch (including a drink.) since i'm sans-gluten, i get the lamb salad with the white sauce and a decent pour of their hot sauce. the vendor has been nothing but nice each time i've gone. he's been very polite and provides efficient service. so don't be discouraged by the (often) long line...it moves quickly. nota bene: this cart likely moves around but the times i've visited have been on wednesdays when the cart is at 36th and market. read more

Good stuff!! I though NY (53rd and 6th) had the most amazing chicken/lamb rice, but after a recent trip, I think this Philly one is a close or even better one! I really appreciate the bigger chunks of lamb and chicken (as opposed to the minced up pieces in NY). And at $5 a plate (including a soda) you can't get a better deal than this. The food quantity is enough for more than a meal, that is if you can keep your hands off eating all of it at once! read more

After going countless times, though, I made the mistake of getting a combo platter with extra white sauce. I was in the mood for a gluten free meat meal, and lamb seemed to fit the bill. Simple order - lamb, rice, "white sauce", and "hot sauce" (I said a little, but he gave it the bottle a good healthy squeeze). It was one of the tastiest things I've eaten ever. Not super spicy, a nice dose of cumin, and the white sauce (tzatziki) was creamy and was a good balance to the red sauce. You get all that, plus a drink, if you want it, for $5. (I didn't want the drink, but still a very good deal for $5.) Still a bit skeptical that the lamb wasn't pressed with something in the wheat family, but the man in the truck said "no flour".
