I was on campus for a week with grand plans of exploring all the different food trucks. On the first day, I got the chicken over rice from here, and that was it for the rest of my search. This ended up being the only food truck I visited over the week, because it was so good that I couldn't convince myself to try anywhere else. All total, I ended up coming here three times in seven days, and I'd gladly go back again. Huge portions, ridiculously cheap, and delicious. The owner is really friendly too. Walking down 13th Street, you might notice the flashing LED sign of the Halal Express Cart. The cart owners came from NYC less than 2 months ago bringing their street feed to Center City. Combo plates are the way to go. Lamb, chicken, falafel, shrimp, and fish are available until they close at 6pm or until they run out. I had the lamb and fish over rice for $6. The platter comes with some lettuce and tomato. And if you say yes, a squirt of white sauce and hot sauce. You should say yes. The lamb was in small pieces rather than the strips I prefer, but they had a nice grilled flavor. The fish (tilapia) was what really stood out. The quality of fish from a street cart could be questionable. But the meaty fillet (what she order? fish fillet?) did not taste the slightest bit funky. And I really liked the spicy tomato marinade. Underneath, the brown-yellow rice was not bland, but I talked to the cart guys and they hinted that if there was enough interest, they could serve biryani like the famous carts in NYC. Ahh Chicken and Rice, how you have eluded me in Philly. After popping my chicken and rice cherry on 53rd street in NYC one drunken night I've been getting the occasional cravings for some halal chicken and rice here at home. I finally found one in the city worth writing over. There wasn't much of a line since it was after lunch on a rainy day, but the guys working there were nice and had a clean cart. For 5 bucks I got myself a solid sized plate with a can of Sunkist, THE BEST ORANGE SODA. none of that Orange Crush, Fanta bullshit. The rice itself tasted like the generic kind of halal cart rice served everywhere but where this cart has a noticeable difference is the chicken. Even more juicy and tender than the famed cart in Midtown NYC with tangy creamy white sauce and hot sauce mixed on. This chicken and rice is better than the one in NY. Yeah I said it Notes: Unlike the one in NYC, these guys mixed the hotsauce for me. Wasn't sure if I could do it myself, didn't try, didn't care, hungry The hotsauce they used wasn't nearly as hot as the one in NYC, slightly disappointed No 30+ ppl wait = Bonus. read more

This cart was just outside of my previous office building of 2 years. The 2 guys that run the stall are efficient, friendly, and make an effort to remember returning customers. They would start my order while I was in line before I even got up to the window, were always cheerful and prompt, and generally a great addition to a busy intersection for a quick, affordable, delicious lunch! A full lunch in Center City for $5? You can't beat that. Aside from the great price, the food happens to be fresh, clean and surprisingly delicious. Their chicken was perfectly seasoned with a balance of spices such as cumin, sumac and curry, without being overpowering. The rice was also nicely seasoned and the white and orange sauces they drizzle on the food makes the whole platter come together. The guys who run the cart are warm and welcoming and don't make you feel like a jackass when you ask a simple question about the food. I've been to a lot of these green food trucks scattered all over Philly, even the one on 38th and Walnut, and have to say that this one is the best I have experienced. I'd recommend the chicken (or lamb) over rice platter with white and hot sauce. Ask the guys to add some more veggies (like chickpeas) in your platter, and you will not regret your decision. Got lunch here today after I treated myself to a new pair of shoes at Macy's ;) ...I wanted a falafel and this was gonna have to do it considering that I was already running late to get back to work! My expectations weren't that high (flashing neon and all that) but I was pleasantly surprised! The falafel was served on gyro bread rather than a pita but I thought the sandwich was great and everything seemed (and tasted!) really fresh! $4 gets you a falafel sandwich and a drink - can't beat that. Great food truck, offering exceptional value. I ordered the Combo Falafel plate, which comes with turmeric rice (perfect, plentiful, and fresh) two falafel (average), cubed, grilled chicken (outstanding) and lamb (gyro style, meh). You have a choice of the cream sauce which I presume is yogurt based and/or a spicy red sauce. I had both, and would probably go lighter on the red in the future. On the side, was a little salad, with a VinegarItte. Add to that, a drink of your choice (includes bottled water) for $6 even. You just can't beat the value, and the portion was grande. My boyfriend and I where at I. Goldberg looking for camping/bug out gear and as we were leaving, we were starving and looking for something quick to eat. The Halal Gyro Express cart was there on the corner calling us, and once we walked over and saw lamb, we were sold. The staff is extremely friendly and open to offering suggestions and explanations of anything you're unsure of. I choose the combo platter with the chicken and lamb over rice with white sauce and hot sauce with a bottle of water $5, and he choose the chicken platter over rice with white sauce and hot sauce with a bottle of water $5. I was not disappointed in my platter, the lamb and chicken were both tender and moist. The combination of the mild white sauce and hot sauce on top was not at all overwhelming but complimented and married all the flavors together. My boyfriends platter was just as good, except for the fact he only ordered chicken instead of the combo, which he later regretted. We've been back multiple times since then and have tried the even spicer hot sauce they carry along with the white sauce. Although tasty, is mouth scorching, tear dripping, nose running spicy. I think I'll stick with the hot sauce that is normally offered rather than being so adventurous. Overall, delicious and has me coming back for more. read more

So I am walking to the Fedex across the street and I see a long line (18 I counted) at a colorful food truck. Turns out it's a new middle eastern food truck called "New York Gyro Truck". The first thing that strikes me is the absolute cleanliness of the truck. The food is simply amazing. I have had the combo sandwich and combo salad. The portions seemed a little small initially but the prices are low also. In hindsight, the portions are perfect for lunch. Do check it out! read more

$3 for a lamb gyro for lunch? Are you kidding me? NY Gyro kids you not. This truck is centrally located across the street from my office building which could be bad news, but I've been able to control myself lately. I usually go here once every few weeks or so. The truck is clean, the workers are friendly, the food is delicious and you can't beat the price. I'd recommend this truck to anyone, especially people who are afraid of eating from trucks because this one is definitely a clean, delicious, refreshing experience. I braved the frigid temps today and went to this cart because i was hungry and yelp told me to lol. Needless to say the food here is definitely worth it! I'm always wary of bright flashing lights but the campiness of "need to spice up your day....magical white sauce would help" (something like that) totally sold me. I've been here a couple times and ordered the falafel with pita. I was expecting a pita but was pleasantly surprised to learn how chewy (in a good way) and even a little seasoned the bread was and looking at another review, I don't think it is pita. I lived in NY and used to frequent carts with this type of food. For the genre, this place is really average. I think the location and the flashing lights give it more star quality than it deserves. I get the falafel sometimes, and it is middling at best. Edible, but not amazing. If you want chicken and rice, the cart half a block up the street on 13th between Market and Chestnut, in front of the Post Office entrance is VASTLY superior. I discovered this cart on a walk home from work and after eating lunch from here three days in a row this week (no lie, it is obsessively-crack-addictingly-good) I decided it was my obligation to stop being selfish and highlight this wonderful dining establishment (er, cart) in the Yelp world to share with others. So I may be divulging one of Philly's best kept secret quick lunch hot spots, but for $5 you get a big container of lamb (or chicken, but I've only stuck with the lamb so far), fragrant rice, and a salad of lettuce, tomato, cucumber and peppers. Oh, the best part is the white sauce they put on it all (I wish there was a better way to describe it, but it is pretty much a mix of mayo/ranch/magical goodness). It's a lot of food for just five small bills and even better---they throw in a FREE CAN OF SODA (so many varieties to choose from! Pepsi OR Coke, Grape Crush--does anyone even drink grape soda anymore??). Maybe others may not be as taken with this deal, but the food is tasty, the salad is fresh, and the meat is tender and delicious. It's very reminiscent of the famous 53rd and 6th Halal Cart in NYC, but dare I say it? I think this Philly Halal Cart is better. I can eat the whole meal and not feel like my stomach is fighting with me or I have to spend the rest of the day in the bathroom (sorry, but I wanted this to be an honest review). Granted, I'm not sure where these guys are getting the meat for the gyros and being 5'2 I'm too short to sneak a peek inside their cart, but however these guys are making their gyros, they are damn good. Very solid falafel and chicken combination platter. The falafel really stands out and is cooked to order making it quite tasty. I will try the fish next time based on the other reviews. I opted for the "very spicy" hot sauce and it did not disappoint. I am normally skeptical about even what are supposedly very spicy sauces but this is the real item so order with caution. read more
