Hale I'a Da Fish House is the REAL DEAL for the freshest and expertly prepared ahi poke as well as other filleted fish varieties. I love poke, but until now have kept searching for that all elusive place to call "the best I've ever had".
While you can certainly get more of a poke variety in terms of other fish like salmon from the grocery stores, Hale I'a offers some shellfish like kimchee shrimp, kimchee tako, smoked scallops and abalone; for fish poke, only ahi is offered but they do the fish poke well. Very well. They offer four sauce varieties mixed with the ahi -- Shoyu, Spicy, Sunrise (sriracha and mayonnaise) and Wasabi Pistachio. For my some 50 minute drive from Kailua-Kona, I preferred something out of the ordinary, so I opted for the two choice bowl ($20.99) with Sunrise and Wasabi Pistachio, choice of rice (white or brown), and Taegu as my "side" (from options seaweed salad, pickled garlic, kimchee crab, crab mayo, and cucumber salad).
Because sauce options were limited to just four, thanks to other Yelpers I carefully chose the two flavors which seemed most popular to them. The Sunrise mix was the perfect combination of spicy and sweet. The Wasabi and Pistachio really elevated the flavor and freshness of the fish. The fish itself is incredibly fresh, cut and prepared well so that the fish literally melted in my mouth. A huge turnoff when eating poke is encountering "stringiness" and having a few tougher pieces essentially rendered inedible. No such encounter here. Every bite was ecstatically savored.
The fish poke can be purchased alone without sides or a bowl combination at $20.99/lb. Sides can be purchased for $15.99/lb.
A few logistics/tips:
1. They Sell Out: I called to order ahead. The phone number for them on most websites is the one from their former location across the street of their current location. Their current phone number is (808)731-4886.
2. Hours are noted as 9am-5pm daily except Sunday, so don't miss out! It's best to call ahead and order to secure your food to avoid disappointment. Lines can get long, and your favorite sauce and/or sides can sell out before end of day. However, if you're the type of person to "chance 'em", you may actually luck out a bit if you go close to closing, and get some extra poke if it looks like they won't sell out.
3. Location: They're located now in the Kawaihae Marketplace which is across the street where they were located previously. My Google Map app got me lost when I entered the "Kawaihae Marketplace", however. Hale I'a is located next to the Ohana Fuels in Kawaihae in the Kawaihae Marketplace so you may want to consider entering that destination instead, knowing the Marketplace and Hale I'a are next door!
