Great sign from the dining room

Good service and great atmosphere. I loved the coconut shrimp and the design of the place--lots of quaint tiki stuff. My date had the seafood fried rice, which was also very good! I'm including a fun pic of a sign on display in the dining room.

You boys gotta go to the Seafood Bar said the valet at the Fairmont, several years ago. We were staying at the mauna kea and we drove down the street towards the harbor. there she was the wonderful seafood bar. Tanks for coming. It says on the funny T-shirts because everyone complains about the view. The regulars think it's wonderful the best ocean view in town. It's the port lol. I think it was 2021 We went the first time and met Dave. What a character he's the best. We're twins it was our birthday and he hooked us up with a couple of mai tais. It's a great old school tiki bar. There's decorations everywhere very much like the Mariana sailing club. Back then my brother got the seafood fried rice and I think I got the cheeseburger . Next time in the catch of the day the way they prepare it in the butter it's fantastic. So now it's 2026 we're staying at the Westin and we went back, Dave is only doing a couple days a week. Matt is the bartender. He's the big tall guy a great guy. I did the appetizer specials. I think they go until five and I did the calamari which is fried and cut up like a Katsu . Horseradish dip. I was still hungry. I did the chicken wings. I wonder if they're the free range island chickens, unique. It was a bunch of wings. I think a half dozen anyway the HH apps are 12 bucks mai tais HH I think were six bucks. It's a great deal. Five stars all the way for the best restaurant by the port. and it's reasonable too. Get there it's our kinda place!

Absolutely loved this place. The ambiance is warm, relaxed, and perfect for a night out. The food was outstanding -- especially the fresh fish. The steamed fish was perfectly cooked and full of flavor, and it's so refreshing to enjoy amazing seafood without anything being deep-fried. We were staying at the Hilton Vacation Club and got 10% off our meal, which was a great perk. And the oyster shooters? Incredible. Fresh, bright, and honestly some of the best we've had. Highly recommend Seafood Bar & Grill for anyone looking for great food, great atmosphere, and a memorable dining experience.

Charbroiled swordfish with rice and vegetables. Also excellent.

Seafood Bar and Grill is located in Kawaihae on the Kohala coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. The restaurant is on the second floor across from an industrial area. Do not park on the ground floor if you have mobility issues. I only saw stairs to the second floor. I did see parking on the second level but it was dark and I couldn't figure out how to get to it. So call first if that is an issue. We sat outside in the patio and enjoyed our meal overlooking the industrial area across from the restaurant. LOL. At first we had trouble getting the attention of our server but once we did everything was fine. I had the steamed fresh swordfish with white rice and vegetables. My husband had the swordfish simply charbroiled with rice and vegetables. I had the key lime pie for dessert. Both our meals were excellent. Highly recommend you try this place.

    Delicious happy hour Mai tais

Fortune smiled upon us when we happened to stop here. Just an instinct richly rewarded in delicious food, amazing mai tais and our server Donnie was off the charts cool not only does he have amazing recommendations and can tell you all the best foods and secret best modifications if you need any but he is also secretly a gecko expert. The ambiance is re-tiki-lously cute

Ate here for a simple birthday celebration while at Kona this month. Was planning to eat some seafood but came on Tuesday Prime Rib night! We got seated at the bar since the tables were full and we are hungry. Came a long haired server who gave us the menu and after a quick "How you doing folks" he started his spill of the Tuesday Prime Rib and there's only 2 slices remaining. I wasn't even able to go through the menu and ended up ok let's try haha! Then only to find out, he said the same spiel to get the new diners to order the Prime Rib! Smart! The prime rib was adequate sized and cooked to our liking. Came with a scoop of mashed potatoes and brocolli florets. Meat was tender with fatty portions but just the same, it was a good dinner. Maybe the next time we are in Kona, will try their seafood menu.

Seafood Bar & Grill in Kawaihae is one of those places that makes absolutely no sense on paper and somehow works perfectly anyway. The view from our table was a glorious mashup of fuel tanks, shipping containers, power lines, storm clouds, and somewhere off in the distance... technically the Pacific Ocean. It's basically the "peek-a-boo ocean view" from Golden Girls brought to life. Which the restaurant itself fully embraces, selling a "Tanks Alot!" t-shirt featuring the harbor fuel tanks like they're a scenic landmark. Frankly, that level of self-awareness deserves respect. And yet? We loved it. Inside is pure harbor tiki chaos: bamboo chairs, glowing fringe lamps, carved tiki menu covers, weathered carvings hidden in the plants, thatched roofing, and the exact kind of atmosphere that says "strong mai tais solve most problems." Speaking of which: the 3-5 happy hour mai tais are $8 and absolutely carrying the emotional weight of the entire operation. Strong, sweet, dangerous, and perfectly matched to the industrial-port-meets-island-dive energy of the place. The food isn't trying to be fine dining, and that's part of the charm. It's "get a little faded with your friends while eating surprisingly solid seafood" food. The seafood quesadilla was exactly what harbor food should be: cheesy, salty, crispy, and perfect with a drink in hand. The seafood curry was legitimately good and felt wildly more ambitious than the surroundings suggested. The calamari came out more like thick calamari steaks than rings, which honestly ruled. The coconut shrimp were excellent. But the sleeper hit was the shrimp shumai. Holy hell. Absolutely inhaled those. This is not polished resort Hawaii. This is weird harbor Hawaii. The kind of place where local workers, tourists, fishermen, and accidental day drinkers all end up under the same tiki roof while container cranes loom in the background like sci-fi palm trees. And somehow... it rules.

They're finally open on weekends! They have a good happy hour 3-5, daily. Went there after a couple of scuba dives on a Sunday. Service was excellent; from being seated, menus, water, beverages, and food order. The beers were poured right to the brim. None of that shorting you with 3" of foam head. I had the seafood quesadilla and shrimp shumai. Both were tasty. Found a new hangout for when I'm up north! I will be coming back.

    Black bean seafood combo

Quick drive from the resort area. Delicious food, cute tiki vibe, great drinks, very friendly and attentive service. We ordered the edamame- it says "spicy" in the name of the dish, but is not spicy, unless you're sensitive to garlic. The edamame marinade was really flavorful, and I wish I could recreate it at home. We also ordered a steamed fresh fish dish (I think it was swordfish) that had flash fried herbs on top and was served with bok choy- it was very nicely done. I ordered the black bean seafood combo- it seems very popular in these reviews and for good reason- it was incredibly savory and I would go back and eat it again two days in a row- so good. The seared ahi was another great choice that a couple people in our party enjoyed! The chef is very talented. Our server, Don (I hope I'm remembering that correctly) and our host Peter were both incredibly gracious, kind and easy to talk to. We really enjoyed our dinner and recommend that you try it out.

I've wanted to try this place for many years, but the stars didn't align until this year. We stopped in for lunch after visiting Hawi. The décor reminded us of La Mariana in Honolulu. Nicole, our server, brought me a Hendricks gin & tonic ($13) and took our order. My friend wanted the lunch special: A deep-fried oyster Po' Boy with fries ($24). I ordered the Thai Beef Salad ($31), and we shared an order of Escargot ($22). The escargot came with two pieces of cheesy toast and there were more than six escargots. I was getting full on the bread and garlic butter sauce. The Po' Boy was a winner! The Thai Beef Salad was less successful; I would have preferred thinly sliced beef like one gets at Vietnamese restaurants rather than slices of beefsteak. However, the salad greens were fine. We enjoyed our visit to Seafood Bar & Grill, and I look forward to coming back on my next visit to the Big Island. Four stars.

Cipriano's Kitchen - Kawaihae's Italian Treasure…read more Cipriano's Kitchen is one of those rare restaurants that keeps you thinking about your meal long after you've left. Chef Gino is generous with both his talent and his portions. Every dish showcases fresh ingredients, expert preparation, and a genuine love of Italian cooking. The menu is seafood-forward, featuring fresh local catches, handmade pasta, and flavors that are both authentic and creative. This family-run restaurant is made even more special by Claudia, Chef Gino's wife and culinary partner. Claudia bakes fresh focaccia daily and prepares the restaurant's gnocchi and pasta from scratch. As hostess, she warmly welcomes every guest and effortlessly serves as the restaurant's "walking menu," describing each dish with passion and detail. The presentation is stunning. Lobster, octopus, shrimp, clams, scallops, and house-made pasta arrive beautifully plated and bursting with flavor. The fresh focaccia alone is worth the visit. Every meal feels thoughtfully prepared, from the first bite to the last. What keeps me coming back is that the food is genuinely craveable. I find myself dining here every couple of weeks for lunch, and more often than not, I leave with a takeout order for dinner because I know I'll be thinking about it later. Cipriano's Kitchen isn't just serving Italian food--it's creating an experience centered around family, hospitality, and exceptional cooking. Kawaihae is fortunate to have this gem, and anyone who appreciates fresh seafood, handmade pasta, and heartfelt hospitality should make it a destination. A true Big Island favorite. "Come hungry. Leave happy. Plan your next visit before you've even finished your meal."

The burger is only available as a combo for about $25, the fish tacos were $36, fries are $7 (and unfortunately not very memorable), and the restaurant adds a 7.5% service fee before prompting for an additional gratuity. By the time everything is totaled up, what looks like a casual lunch turns into a very expensive meal. If you're looking for a splurge, the food is fine. If you're expecting a laid-back burger-and-taco spot with reasonable prices, you may experience some sticker shock. I'd happily come back for the food if the value proposition were better, but next time I'd probably look elsewhere for lunch.

We planned this evening well in advance, making reservations over a month ago and explicitly noting the milestone celebration. My husband even called ahead of time to confirm, and the staff assured us they would do something special for them. The letdown began right at arrival. The hostess was passive and asked our table, "Who is celebrating their anniversary?" Given that our party consisted of two couples under 40 and my in-laws, it felt incredibly unobservant and careless for a luxury resort host team. Later in the meal, my husband quietly asked our server if anything special was planned for the occasion, only to be told, "No, we don't do that." Beyond a casual, passing verbal acknowledgment, absolutely nothing was done. The only true highlight of the evening was the beautiful view. Our server was friendly, though a bit awkward, but the kitchen and bar execution were highly disappointing: * **The Drinks:** Highly overpriced for the size, lacking in flavor, and tasted noticeably watered down. * **The Pacing:** While thankfully, we were in no rush, it took a tremendous amount of time to receive our appetizers and salads, though the entrees did arrive quickly after. * **The Food:** Every dish was exceptionally expensive, yet the portion sizes were minuscule and entirely flavorless. The Caesar salad, in particular, had a very strange, off-putting flavor profile. * **Dessert:** We ordered the $17 cheesecake, which was absolutely tiny. For a premium dining experience on the coast at a luxury resort, you expect a balance of ambiance, culinary excellence, and attentive service. While Manta has the ambiance down, the food and hospitality were entirely lacking. We left the restaurant hungry, deeply disappointed, and feeling that our family's major milestone deserved a much higher level of care than what we received.
