Excellent place to watch the waves and surfers. We stopped here in January so the waves were high and numerous surfers were out. At the time of our visit, they were setting up the area for the Billabong Pro Pipeline surfing tournament. Parking is available at the park, however, it is limited and snug. The parking lot is long, but narrow making it difficult to navigate around cars, people, and chickens. Luckily we found a parking spot and walked the short distance to the beach. The water was too dangerous for us to swim. From shore we enjoyed watching the surfers and waves. The surfers were impressing and the waves are strong and persistent. Overall, we enjoyed our visit and recommend this beach to others!

Pipeline masters! This place boosts some of the pipeline waves for surfing and is home to the annual competition. I had the fortune of watching this spectacular event this year and watched Kelly Slater and the best pro surfers in the world slay this wave! There is a large bathroom in the park and it does flush. Parking is terrible during the surf competition but street parking is available. There are lots of food trucks to choose from. The beach is beautiful. I highly recommend just hanging out here. Maybe you might catch JJ Florence sneaking in a wave.

Amazing beach. Must go for sure! North shores are very pretty and the waters and swells with all the surfers are something you don't see everyday! Turtle Bay beach is very pretty as well.

I was thinking it's pretty dope there's a surf channel . I thought it was cool every day they were filming surfers . Now you have to remember we came during a storm a week before Christmas. It was raining but it wasn't exactly Cold weather. It was the perfect 70 to 85° with some sprinkles. OK maybe there was a Little flash flood here and there but that was in the beginning of the week. I was the first to arrive out of a group of 10 of my friends from Los Angeles. Which was kind of nice because if we all Followed each other in four different cars , parking would've been a nightmare ! I looked around and I saw School across the street and what looked like a regular park. I was excited to notice wild chickens bathrooms and shower . After a couple steps in to the park I realize there was a lifeguard tower. On my way to the lifeguard tower A man walks up to me. Aloha my kids are selling pizza in the parking lot. I made them a pizza oven on a golf cart . The pizza has hemp in it! Where are you from? I'm from LA. Do you know if LA has hemp in their pizza? I'm not sure but I'd love to try it out . Hey do you want to hear a joke? Sure! Man starts talking to God and says what is $1 million to you God? God replied $1 million is like one penny to me. What is 1 million years to you? 1 million years to me is like one minute to me . The man stops and thinks for a minute. God do you think I can have one penny? God replies sure give me a minute. Ha ! Then the pizza father just walked away. That was cool ! Then I continued on towards the lifeguard tower just passed a couple trees there it is paradise!! This is a total local spot. I can put money down that we were the only tourist and that's just because my best friend grew up here. You can tell this is a secret spot. You'll be glad to know that after we sat down a bunch of people started sitting by us because of my 90s hip-hop playlist I worked so hard on ! It totally passed the vibe check ! There is definitely clouds here in there but the surf was good . I could see the towers where they film . I can see two different groups of male and female surfers . Definitely some pros surfing going on here. We spent the day there and we watched the sunset. You think that would mean it's time to leave but the weather was still nice. Until it started to sprinkle and then we finally decided to pack it up but an excellent day at the beach was had . So grateful for all the blessings!

Great and not too populated (at least when I went) beach! Sitting under the palm tree with the only shade there really makes me want to buy a big beach Umbrella! So if you have it you should bring it ! There was big waves crashing and a bunch of surfers in the water. Pretty blue and clear water ! Great place to sit back and enjoy. I liked hearing music and watching the surfers do there thing. I did go in and it was slightly cold when I went In but not California cold at least! I got a parking right away but on busier days you may run into trouble since there isn't a parking lot just on the side of the road parking. Will need to bring my husband a long the water is great to get in the waves made it fun maybe next time a boogie board is what I'll start off !

B-E-A-utiful! Sunset beach is one of my favorite beaches on Oahu. The water is usually nice and clear and the sand is clean and fine. There aren't really any shaded areas on the beach so if you don't like prolonged periods in the sun, this may not be the beach for you. This beach is so gorgeous that sometimes even monk seals will pay visits here. You can find them resting on the sand. This beach is also one of the preferred beaches for professional surf events like the Triple Crown of Surfing. There are also showers and restrooms across the street from the beach. They're pretty clean and well-maintained for beach facilities. The only thing that may be a problem here is the parking, especially when the surf's up. There's a strip of parking stalls along Kamehameha Highway but they fill up pretty quickly. Nonetheless, Sunset Beach is one of my regular stops on the North Shore and will be for many years to come.

Winter visit January 4, 2016 Howzit! We briefly stopped at this beach located in the North Shore of Oahu and was our first stop on the east end. The beach was closed to the public during winter season except for some surfers braving the big waves. There were warning signs up and the beach area was roped off in red cautioning the public that there are strong currents and one could be swept away from shore and could drown. Also, a sign that says beware of dangerous shore breaks, these are waves that break in shallow water and can seriously injure someone even in small surf. I was mesmerized just by watching the waves that can reach as high as 30+ feet, wow! just fascinating to watch. It is a beautiful beach but during this winter season the beach is a world-famous surfing spot, a surfer's paradise! I understand that it is home to internationally known surfing contests? The beach was crowded of just spectators. No one could be in the water and people were just watching the tall waves and the big-wave surfers in action. Parking was a little difficult to find but we were able to locate a spot and take pictures and videos. Wished I was able to witness the sunset but we still had the rest of our around-the-island tour to finish... would love to come back during the summertime when the waves are calmer and do some snorkeling and witness one of the best sunsets in Hawaii. For now... Aloha! Review #0443

Perfect beach to take a nap! This was our favorite beach from our May 2012 vacation. We tried to go to Waimea Bay a couple times, but we could never find parking! (in the parking lot or on the street) so we always ended up at Sunset Beach which is only approximately 3 miles away. We found parking easily every time! It's also not very far from all the shrimp trucks. So after a trip to Giovanni's we would come here to relax. I would just lay out in the sun for like 1.5 - 2 hours (remember to reapply sunblock!). The water was pretty calm and my husband did some swimming and even got his snorkel gear out. He said he was able to spot a lot of fish - even the Unicorn fish, some striped ones and fish with a beak. Sometimes the clouds start rolling over and one time it even starting POURING rain then when we just got back to the car it would stop raining and be sunny again. That's Hawaiian weather for you! The last time we were here, it was TOO WINDY. There was a sand storm and the sand actually HURT! Sand was all stuck in my scalp, in my ear, and all over my face. HAHAH. So we just packed up and got some shave ice instead. Overall, depending on weather conditions -Sunset Beach is perfect for... NAPPING, SUNBATHING, SWIMMING, SNORKELING, SURFING

This beach is decent for swimming compared to many of the other beaches leading up to the northern most point on Kamehameha. The sand isn't as steep and rocky so you have a fighting chance of surviving the surf. Don't get me wrong, the tide is still very strong but I think if you're not a good swimmer you have a better chance of getting out of the water and/or your kids have less of a chance of getting swept away. There was also a lot of open beach with not a whole bunch of people on it. I guess many of the others stop further down the road and don't venture up this far but honestly I didn't think that any of the beaches on the north shore were crowded by any means. What I also found awesome is that there appeared to be a lot of good parking with a clear unobstructed view of the sunset. I guess that may be where the beach might get it's name but I don't know. My sister and I raced all the way up here to get a good view of the sun setting since the clouds kind of messed that up down by Shark's Cove. There were several families out there with kids build castles and carrying on and such so check this beach out. One thing I will say is that the parking spots are very close to the highway so it can be a real problem trying to back up out onto Kamehameha and get the heck out of Dodge as it can be really busy.

Wow this is a beautiful soft sand beach with Crystal blue waters. Surf when we went was very low and water was great for swimming. Parking is a little hit and miss, but as we came later in the day, we find a spot. There was a lifeguard on duty. One of our favorite beaches!

    Brianna W.

Okay. My favorite way to enjoy this beach is first thing in the morning or at the end of the day. When NOBODY is out yet except the surfers that deserve to be. A box of HOT malasadas (donuts) from Penny's malasadas, a coffee from Sunrise Shack, and nobody to bug me...the perfect hour. Truly...the perfect hour. If you sit just right, you see nothing but sea and sky.

Ehukai Beach is also known as Pipe Line. The people who come out to the North Shore on any given weekend is Amazing. Too see the masses who turned out for the Billabong Pipe Masters was like Wow! We were lined up and packed out for miles along the coastline. This is really a beautiful beach with magnificent waves. Today was like a no other...food, family, friends, sun and surfing. The rain held out and so did we. See Ya Soon at Pipeline.

    Beautiful sunset
    Nellie F.

It's appropriately named as you can see some breathtaking sunsets from here. The sand is not the best though, it gets EVERYWHERE and is difficult to get off when it's wet. There can also be a lot of debris from nearby trees and such especially after bad weather. If you're not a good swimmer, I'd stay out of the water here as the current and waves can be very strong. I've been swept clear off my feet by the receding water after a wave broke on the shore. I do love sunset to just lay out and enjoy the surroundings. I can't speak on the actual surf as I'm not a surfer, but I do love watching people surf. They're so fearless in the water and it's just so beautiful.

We drove along Kamehameha Highway and pulled into Kahalewai Place and found a parking spot along the side road. One thing we noticed right away that it seems to a a local spot and there weren't too many tourists around, even though we were up in North Shore. We walked towards the beach and followed some people with surfboards in tow. I could see a bunch of locals out by the beach on their paddle boards and surfboards, and most of them were kids and young adults. It seems to be the local surf spot for beginners as the waves were pretty tame, but it was consistent with the North Shore winds behind them. It also seems to a be a good fishing spot for locals as there was a Filipino family enjoying themselves having a picnic. I got into a conversation with one of the local fisherman (P. Sherman), who told me what types of fish he was catching and how to cook 'em. He showed me his bucket of his catches of the day, and they were enough to feed his family. He didn't have to, but he was nice enough to let me take photos of him as he was more than accommodating. I thanked him for his time and appreciated his hospitality with my intrusion on his daily life. We explored the area some more as there were trails to follow, but there were also "Private Property" signs posted everywhere. I was beginning to wonder if Mark Zuckerberg bought half of this place with all those signs around. But we skirted around it as we went around the beach and enjoyed the relaxed vibe and energy of the beach. We also liked that it wasn't very crowded compared to the hustle and bustle on the main strip of Haleiwa as it felt like a cocoon shielded us from that source. We could have spent more time on this beach, but we wanted to see and experience as much as possible on the North Shore of Hawaii. Definitely a place you could spend a day at if you were a local.

The trail was very easy to find, just search for the trail on google maps and the map will lead you to the parking lot next to Dillingham Airfield (look for "West Gate). After parking, head towards the mountain to get to the trailhead. It took us 1 1/2 hours to the covered picnic table, mostly because we were pausing for water breaks and photos with the kids. Tips: wear plenty of sunscreen, a hat, and bring LOTS of water. It gets hot!

Nice little trail on the north shore…read more You park at the dillingham airport and the trailhead is across the street. Not hard to find. The first half mile is shaded switchbacks. The mile after that is exposed. It sort of reminded me of hikes in SoCal. The gradient isn't too bad because of the switchbacks but you are going up about 1000' in like 1.5 miles. So the climbing can feel a bit relentless. No scrambling over rocks and other obstacles like some other Oahu hikes. I thought it was fairly easy. I think anyone in decent shape won't have any issues. For those who are just beginning your fitness journey, this would probably be a good workout. The trail is easy to follow. Very little chance of you getting lost (at least to the picnic table which was my turn around point). It's very rocky but walking/hiking isn't an issue. Trail Runners: I saw some other trail runners but this wouldn't be my first choice trail on the north shore. The switch backs don't go on long enough to get any sort of rhythm after the half mile point. And while I wouldn't say this is the most technical of runs, you definitely have to pay attention. I went super slow on the decent for my first time. I may go back and go past the picnic table to see what's up there but I'd say skip this if you're a runner. Hikers will like it I think. And it wasn't too crowded. I saw a handful of people on my run. The views are ok. There are definitely much more scenic views on Oahu but these weren't bad by any means.
