We met some family here tonight and had a great meal. The Stromboli is huge and very reasonably priced at $12. It was the star of the show with the teenagers. They almost ate it all. My grilled chicken wrap was tight and the veggies were fresh. My fries were standard McDonald's type fries. We would definitely go back as it's close to our church. read more

We've been going to Hales Ales and kitchen for years to watch football and enjoy their great food. Sadly, the restaurant is under new ownership and nothing is the same. They struggled to get the OSU game on, it took five minutes into the first quarter before they could get the game on. Service was insanely slow, took well over an hour for our food to come. They redecorated trying to give the place a more upscale vibe, also a fail as this place is a sports bar. We will be looking for a new regular spot to watch football. read more

Longtime favorite next to Lowe's in Hilliard, Hales Ales is under new ownership. It's now known as The Ale House in Mill Run. As with many new businesses, there have been many challenges in reopening starting with a beautiful remodel of the dining area. Not overly fancy but a definite upgrade in the main seating area, outside front patio, and restrooms. They've spent some money to improve the experience. Plenty of TVs for sports viewing. But mainly they've expanded the old menu (which was terrific) to now include 13 sandwiches, 4 salads, 8 appetizers, 8 house pizzas plus my favorite stromboli, and countless beers, wines, liquors. Some desserts and a kids menu. The items we've tried were very good. Oh, a cool Happy Hour too. AND the service on a busy Friday evening was commendable. Every body hustled their buns off and the few extras we needed- all you had to do is ask. A nice visit with the new owner revealed his commitment to the Hilliard dining/bar scene. Service was ridiculous. Salmon salad was supposed to come with shoestring potatoes..had none. when asked for fries instead, they added the amount to the check. I ordered hot tea and was told they didn't have any. Burger came with mayo, had to scrape it off. They claimed all burgers are served with mayo. Never saw that on the menu. A group of friends has been coming here for trivia for several years. Earlier this year, the business was sold. Good core staff remain, but ownership/mgmt is a mess. From around February until just a few weeks ago, the place was in a state of remodel, including 1 bathroom at times, with no lock on the door, cable boxes dangling from unpainted, papered and taped walls for MANY months, an extremely limited liquor selection (1 bourbon), pizza oven broken 2 of the last 4 times we've been there (the place is known for it's stromboli and flatbreads), and about 1/2 the beer selection they once had. Last night, after most trivia participants were present and had ordered food and drink, the owners decided to call off trivia. The reason given was that they were "focusing on the dining experience" and apparently decided it best to make this change DURING trivia. So AT LEAST 1/2 the patrons were treated to being told to buzz off after likely ordering their 2-3rd food choice. The owners were inexplicably disrespectful to the customer, the staff, the trivia company, and the Hales name, which they'll surely be changing as they burn down the brand. The most disgusting part was that, even though both owners were present, they had a proxies do the dirty work of calling the trivia host and, embarrassed and frustrated, the servers were made to go to each table and explain that trivia was off. But hey, the owner assured me they've been at this for 35 yrs and know what they are doing. read more

(Terrible service) Second time .. midweek ..7:00 pm Food is good 7.5-to 8 out of 10 Ambiance is ( under construction ) Service is 2 out of 10 .. Got our meal.... First time here. It took a few minutes to get greeted, and it appeared short staffed as the crew seemed rushed a bit. The Stromboli sounded great and was what brought me here, but I learned that after 8:00 PM, they shift to a "Late Night" menu and the Stromboli wasn't on it. That was disappointing. Cajun House Chips were a massive order, but only one small container of dipping sauce. I got the Blue Cheese Buffalo Chicken Flatbread. It's heavy on blue cheese. Loved this bar but new management has a very shaky start. Went in early afternoon and was handed a menu with fewer options, we ordered and was told the items we chose were unavailable. Ordered hamburgers and they were ok but got a feeling the bar is going to go downhill. Might try again in a few months to see if they improve. read more

Ok so we have been coming here since it opened. Part of what makes us come back is the hospitality of the owner. The last two times we have been here we have had the same bartender. She is so condescending and rude. She looks like she has a million other things to do OTHER than being here. She is perfectly competent but would it kill you to smile?? We don't require a lot of customer service but it is such a poor representation because the owner is always smiling and making people feel welcome. And props to them for serving Coke and not their nasty competitor! We started with tge $6 soft pretzel app. It was served with a runny beeper cheese and mustard....plain old mustard. My hubby ordered a $7.25 italian subthat was super thick with slices od italian meats, topped with tomato, onion and Lettece. I struggled to identify a vegan option so I opted for a white pizza topped with tomatoes. Unfortunately it was bland so I added a side of mariners to elevate the pizza. Staff was friendly and attentive. The bar was loud and I regret not sitting on the pstio. It was such a pleasant evening. I gave it 3 stars for the noise and so-so menu. read more

Under new ownership, it was intriguing to watch the transformation until I had to share a bathroom with men ...2 men walked in to use the restroom as I was present!! The men's room was being remodeled so the women's became unisex, seriously. The food was before was acceptable but always desired better quality but now that same menu items are now $2, $3 and even $4 more!?! No Touch Tunes no Keno which entertains some of us. Hales Ales is a hidden dive bar in Hilliard, I was always hesitant to try this place out due to its location. It's in between a Lowes and an Aquarium store (kind of odd placement) but it's amazing! Their menu is cheap and the food is delicious. I've now been a couple of times but last night I got the pepperoni roll and it was amazing. The beer prices were fair and they had CBC Bodhi on tap, which is a personal favorite of mine. There is also a large outdoor area in the front as well as the back. Fantastic hole in the wall establishment tucked away in a Mill Run strip mall next to Lowes. Very cool covered patio with plenty of seating. Everyone from the host to our waitress were outstanding. Live music is regularly provided and all items we ordered came out in like 5 minutes. No joke! They are doing a great job operating under COVID guidelines, and there are complimentary bottles of hand sanitizer at each table! Every restaurant should do this! I heard this is a family owned and operated establishment, if so, they are doing a fantastic job, and I'm even more thrilled to support a locally owned business. read more

Been keeping an eye on this place, and it looks like they opened a week or so ago. Decent bar/restaurant. Lots of bar seating inside, and a covered patio outside with picnic tables. Plenty of TVs inside for games. I was on the way to work so I couldn't partake, but their beer list is interesting. The menu is typical bar food, but expanded a bit with some flatbreads, potstickers, etc. Plenty of variety, and several things I'll try next time. I had a cup of beer cheese soup, and an Italian sub. The soup was good: creamy, dense, with subtle flavors and nice chunks of soft pretzel on top. The sub was a solid but unexceptional take on the standard (but then, that's why I got it- if a place messes up a sub, something's wrong.) The bread was just right, airy but crunchy on the outside. The veggies were decent. The meats were a nice contrast to the rest. All in all a satisfying meal. Service was great mid-afternoon, with the bartender and the owner coming to check on me. Hale's Ales and Kitchen is a pretty average bar. There are plenty of TVs to watch your games or sports. They have a nice beer selection. It also includes a good collection of craft beers. The food is mostly typical bar food, but there are some things like flatbreads, hummus, and pizza. I like there are good options about where to hang. It has a patio in front and one in the back. The one in the back is better since it's not next to a parking lot. It's more private but still is inviting. There are lots of TVs throughout so you can watch from anywhere. It of course is mostly focused on the beers. There are tons of choices including many from local breweries. It also has some of the typical bar food. The entrees are usually about $8 to $10. It has some good healthy items beyond the usual bar shit like the hummus. The food is more of an afterthought here which means you can focus more on watching the games while enjoying the big alcohol selection. I would come to Hale's again. It's a good addition for the neighborhood, which needs some more bars. Will give it another try. read more

Sat at the bar... Bartender waited on me around noon on a Monday... Ordered a Reuben sandwich which was really small for a Ruben it came on a Kaiser bun instead of rye or pumpernickel Rye which tastes much better.... The sauerkraut was a little too sour and there wasn't enough thousand Island dressing... And it was really small compared to most restaurants... they charge just as much as other restaurants for this small Reuben sandwich... There was an ample amount of French fries ... The bartender never came back to ask me how my sandwich was and when I was ready to check out I had to flag her down to get her attention just so I could pay my bill... Not a good experience... To top that off the unsweetened iced tea I ordered didn't taste very good.... now if I'd come here for just a beer... Probably would've been OK... LOL read more

This place is underrated. They have the best Stromboli and always have a great variety of beers on tap. I highly recommend this place to anyone who wants great beer and food. They also have a huge back patio with cornhole and other activities. This place is great for the summer months. read more

This establishment has been taken over by new management and for the past several months it has steadily gone down hill. We went there last night for Tuesday trivia only to find out that half of the kitchen equipment had been shut down and the menu was limited, but we enjoy the staff and other patrons... so we stayed and ordered food we would not normally get - cold subs and bologna sandwiches. After the food arrived (and 30 minutes before trivia was supposed to start) we found out that the new owners have decided to cancel trivia.... less than an hour before the start time. This was also a surprise to the Columbus Trivia company personnel as well. When we asked the new owners (twin brothers) about it, they couldn't be more condescending...... bowing and mocking us. One brother explained that he has been doing this for 35 years and its his restaurant while the other brother hid on the back patio. This all comes on the heels of a previous week where they only had one shared restroom for men and women. I didn't really mind taking a leak while some woman was in the open stall next to me.... but she wasn't happy. It all makes sense now. These guys have no clue what they are doing and are running out patrons and chasing away half the staff. Good luck with that. Have been to Hale's Ales many times and was surprised this afternoon. They are under new management. We decided to go for some food and to watch the Browns/Green Bay game. Knew something was up when we walked past the patio and saw that it was not open and dismantled. The inside has been remodeled and it looks very nice, however the seating against the walls look like they' have a pretty big step up to be seated. The TV's in the middle of the room could not be changed to the game because the bar/restaurant is in the middle of change. Didn't quite understand that. Also, there are no more Ohio Lottery machines with Keno and other games. We ordered 2 beers and a glass of wine, plus some potstickers. The bill was $24, which wasn't outrageous, but more than it used to be. All in all, the atmosphere is not bad, but not the same as it was before. Personally, we probably won't go back, because once a week I enjoy playing games while my husband and son watch football. I would be bored there and there are plenty of other sports bars that can accommodate us. read more
