If you are a book lover like me then Half Price Books helps you save a little cash. As they take in people's used books you never know what you are going to find in the shop month to month. Time before last I was in and found some art magazines that are expensive new but I picked them up for $3 each, I was pretty happy with that. They not only have magazines, they have dvd's, music, journals (new), and all manor of other items related to reading such as bookmarks, stickers, pens, etc. They are usually pretty busy and typically have a couple cashiers at checkout and also a few at the book sells check-in counter so they are pretty good at getting you through the line when you are ready to go. If you are like me then you may be in there for several hours. I will continue to stop in to see what goodies they have. read more

It was very nice. People there are very friendly and helpful, and the selection was larger than I thought it would be.

This was a pleasant discovery! Being an avid reader, I have been wanting to find a combination book store, that is they sell both used and new books as well as tons of other collectibles, records, DVDs, CDs, games and gaming accessories. I was impressed with the organization of the various sections. I've got lists that I carry around with me because I'm still old school and too lazy to put everything I have read and want to read next into an app. My lists started in 2002 and it would be too much work. I read 32 books last year. But I digress; I did find three books that I had on my list for future reads and one was a hard back. I prefer hard backs because they are easier to hold while reading than paper backs. PLUS, it was HALF PRICE for a brand new book. How do they do that? So I'm happy even though I only found three books today. Finding them a few at a time is okay by me since I've got at least a eight books now waiting for me to get to them. I can knock out a 400 page book in three days if it's a "page turner" so I don't want to run out. read more

This is a fun spot to shop for books and literary items as well as music and movies. I love coming here to check out what the staff has as top picks and see what new books might be good to add to my reading list. The staff is friendly and if you need to find anything they can help or order it potentially from another store. If you like to read books and then get rid of them this is also a good spot to sell your used books. You don't get much but you know someone else will get to benefit from the book. I like their variety and how I can easily find books by author or genre. They also have journals and calendars and sometimes random toys to peruse. It is a fun evening for us to come and check out books and get a great deal on a gently used one. read more

Love this place. Come here whenever I'm in town. I usually grab a few books and stuff them in my suitcase for the trip home. They have a great selection and the books are in good shape. This time I got carried away and ended up with about 12 books. I knew there was no way to get them home so I asked if it was possible to ship them to my house. The friendly cashier called her manager, who I believed was Phil, and asked if they would ship them. He said yes and took them to weigh them. This is one of my go to locations for buying books, vinyls, movies, gifts and more. They have a wide selection of items and the quality is always up there. I particularly love the clearance section as I can always find some good deals and finds. They do have new items as well but it is mainly used books. My only nitpick with browsing is the fiction section starts in the middle of a busy aisle but usually people excuse themselves and it's not a huge deal. read more

I love books as much as I love food, and to try and focus on a budget half price books is an awesome place for me to go because price is low and you can sell books back. I'm a northsider so I typically check out the 86th street location. But I randomly was down on the south side and we decided to stop into the store. It's awesome! I love the set up of this located, and the themed gifts you can get with them. The staff is always very helpful but I'm one who likes to browse and pick out books on my own whim. I found a thriller by Ruth ware called in a dark dark wood. Then in the clearance section there was a JFK book as well as a book called the good girl. I ended up leaving with 3 books and paid under 20 dollars! Moderators removed my last review, but it is absolutely relevant. The pandemic doesn't give businesses an excuse to humiliate people. The people that worked at HPB discriminated against me because of my disability (more than once). I'm a disabled vet that was wounded in Iraq when I was hit by a mortar. The blast destroyed my respiratory system, so I cannot wear a mask. I have a doctor's note from the VA that confirms my condition. I even attempted to conform to their rules with a face shield made for me by the VA. Not only did they still not serve me, the guy at the counter became a condescending jerk. I was a loyal customer that spent thousands of dollars a year there every year. Now, I'll never step foot in there again. If I can save another person with a medical condition the unnecessary humiliation I received, then my situation was worth it. There is also another situation. Prior to one of their mega coupon events, I asked an employee to hold an item for me (Large Lego display). This had been common practice as they had done it several times before. The employee said it couldn't be held. I didn't think anything of it as I thought they had quit holding items. That was until I saw the employee loading it (with help) into her vehicle later on that day. I guess they will hold things for you unless an employee wants it. I thought that was pretty shady. That was just shortly before the pandemic, so it wasn't too far away from primary incident. To me, it shows a pattern of behavior. As for the moderators, removing my post defeats the purpose of your website. Pandemic, or not, this behavior shows exactly just how they run their business. read more

I had 13 boxes of books. I thought they would look at the lot and make an offer. Instead, they methodically went through every book. I got more than I thought, and they gave me back the books they did not want. I thought they were very professional and efficient. They also took the time to explain to me their methods. Soooooo I've been coming here for three years - sometimes weekly or at least once a month. I can believe I havenever reviewed this place! I love this HPB. It's not as large as the Avon location but it's a good friendly neighborly size. I often can find great things here - used books, comics, new books, pop funko figures, bookmarks, stationary, toys, and more. Amazingly, they have had some rare collectibles. A first edition Tolkien, some rare comics (one was $5,000!). It's fun to look at. If you are an educator, you show your faculty/staff ID and get an educator card - good for 10% off. read more

Love this place. I could get lost in this store for hours. The options available to you are endless and they have such a wide variety of books, calendars, music, and gifts. I homeschool my children so knowing I can come here to find good material for my kids is important. I appreciate how books are sorted and do really appreciate the knowledge of the staff when it comes to less common books. The staff is friendly, engaging, and super helpful. They are always eager to help and make our experiences here enjoyable each time. The place is always hopping but I never feel I'm neglected or unseen. The prices are great and if you sign up with their email subscription, you get coupons and information on upcoming sales. Win win! read more

Stop Throwing Away Your Money! Selling to Half Price Books is CRAZY! Today, I brought 75 books and 40 CD's. They offered $25 total (21.7 cents per item - from Heidi and Eric; how do hey sleep at night?). Some of the books are still used by a major University for their MBA program (i.e. they are current). Packed up and went to Goodwill; valued each item at only 10% of what I paid (discounted 90%). RESULT: $184.50 tax deduction - and it only took 5 minutes!!! read more

I can't say enough great things about this business: wide selection, helpful staff, Thorough Covid protocol, quick and reasonable shipping for books available only at other locations. I love the flow of this location. It's a longer store instead of wide. Once you enter, you're greeted by the sales counter. That flows into history, crafts, the register. Then from there you can't go wrong in the direction you go. Comics, gifts and media in front of the register, Animals and teen fiction to the right, fiction of every type by genre then author in the middle surrounded by several kids sections and clearance on the outer side. I like this locations mainly because of how easy it is to find a book I'm looking for. If something can't be found, there's always an employee available to look up an item in their system (be prepared to know the specifics though if you're searching by genre, author or series). I've even gone in the last weekend before Christmas and it was easy to get someone's attention. Employees are very nice too. I accidentally left a pair of gloves there once and they kept them at the front waiting for me. It's in a prime location that is easy to park, easy to get in and out of back on to US 31. The prices beat Amazon and other book stores. I always end up saving minimum $4 compared to an online price. So they definitely do their research on their value. One thing I'll have to say about the company that I agree with their choices though, is if you're not prepared to sell your items for what you think you'll get, then don't bother. That's my personal quote on that. They've taken everything I've sold. They're a business who has to make money too. So give them some credit, and if you want more money then go else where. Overall, I've never left this location without what I needed/wanted which makes it a rewarding experience. read more

Very rude staff!!! They are not helpful at all. This store was dirty and filthy!!! Trash on the floor and bathrooms looked like they were not clean in months. The store was not in order at all! Everything was very messy and out of place. You can't find anything you need in this store because of the messy chaos! Very unhappy with this location and will never be shopping here again. It's one thing to be short on staff and not being able to keep things clean and tidy but don't be rude to me. read more

Real readers, interested people are working here...giving me my only real conversation at a bookstore in Indy. A journey down to Greenwood for me is a metaphysical exodus where I feel like I should be in a burka and on a camel. Across the deserted swath of what my hometown is...I know there is always this oasis, unchanged for over a decade. Reading, Conversations on Reading, Books about Reading, Books for a Dollar!, are all bits of refuge amidst a reality in Greenwood I'd rather deny. The parking lot will make your hair stand and it will stress you out...just know that once you're in here...you'll be relieved and allowed to wander, inquire, sip, search and sift through albums, movies, books and your soul. NOTE: Do not let the far back corner placement of the clearance section deter you from getting back there and finding books for a buck, even if it means hurdling strollers like O.J. in that Hertz commercial. read more

While I do ebooks these days, the rest of my family still prefers regular books. This place is perfect for finding gifts for my family. They not only have a massive amount of both new and used books, but also gift items such as Pop figures, music, video games, and stationary. When it comes to selling items, how much you get back largely depends on the demand of the items. The newer the item the more likely you'll get a good amount of money from it. read more

The staff is always great and friendly, and over the past few years have gotten to know me by name (I look books ok!) and are always willing to help me locate items or recommend books. I can always find what I am looking for in this location of Half Price Books. To be honest, this is not something I can say about other locations. They have a small urban fiction section, but they do have it. They also have a good new jazz vinyl record selection which included Nina Simone, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. They are good about keeping the lines moving here. I never wait long. This goes for the check out and getting a quote to sell your books. The location is smaller than what I an used to and lacks in the magazine section (it's never organized). I also wish they had a better stationary selection. However, they have good sales and a decent clearance area. This is my go-to HPB. I can always find what I need. read more

Great place to find random books of interest. My husband and I can spend an hour or two in this store finding books over various interesting subjects for well below regular shelf price. You can also sell your books at this location, granted you may not come home with $20 dollars but at least you have a little spending cash and you know someone is getting some good out of your old dusty books. Okay, so here's the good guy point of view. I need a copy of Cervante's Don Quixote. For a brand new, plastic wrapped silver edition from Border's...$25.99. For a more than slightly used, paperback from Half-Price...$1.99. I had to find a copy for my English Lit class. I chose Half-Price, and used the money I saved to purchase a movie. Great place. Great location. (Right off Hwy 31 on the south side.) The renovations have made it even more enjoyable. Must visit if you need an old paperback copy of that favorite book. read more

Go to this place and buy books! Seriously, this place is awesome. They have a great selection of books. They also sell odd things like vintage games and consoles. And I have never encountered an employee that wasn't both helpful and friendly. A word of warning if you happen to be selling. This is a business. They aren't going to buy all your junk just because you don't want it. They also aren't going to give you back what you paid for it. The real purpose is to make enough back from stuff you have no use for to buy a new book or two. I have seen at least two people stand at the buy counter and be down right rude to the employees. So, unless you have a signed copy of the world's rarest book don't go expecting a payday. Even though this is a corporate store, it feels like a local bookstore to me. And that's what I really like. There are chairs you can sit in to read. They have coffee if you are so inclined. So, once again, go buy books!! read more

I really love this bookstore. This store has greatly expanded their selection of books, music and other items during the many years they have been located in Greenwood. There is nothing like searching and discovering a book or cd or vinyl that you just have to buy, and well, I have done a lot of buying here. A large portion of my library and music collection is due to this store. The staff is friendly and the quality of their used books and music is very good. Half price books remains one of my favorite places to shop. This store is always clean with friendly staff. I typically shop for retro games but their prices have steadily risen to eBay proportions. I used to be able to get decent deals on games but if it's got any kind of value to it they definitely factor that into their prices. I've all but stopped buying games from them. One last pet peeve is is how they've also started selling NEW books at retail prices. Just stop. That's not why people shop here. read more

I collect many childhood books and can usually find what I'm looking for. I have a hard time selling back books to this store, so I usually don't sell here. Low rating for how they handle their Friday after Christmas deal. It is advertised as the first 100 in line get a free tote bag and $5 off coupon and free coupon calendar. But it's the first 100 that walk by the young employee with the bags, regardless of age. Everyone knows this, so one person stands in line and then their family and friends join them 3-5 minutes before the door opens. And everyone brings babies in strollers and toddlers, since everyone in the party gets a bag, no age limit. So only half of the people that were the original 100 in line get a bag. We waited in the cold rain and were among the first 100 until a couple minutes before the doors opened. They should have a manger handing out the bags and should hand out some sort of claim ticket or plastic chip to the first 100 age 13 and older (or age 18 like most contests are) 30 minutes before doors open to be more fair and reduce line cutting. Or have a barrier roped off so people can't cut in line etc. read more

As a sucker for bookstores, Half Price Books is a godsend. Not only is their selection great, but the staff is friendly and helpful (right down to giving directions to a nearby Thai restaurant) and the prices can't be beat. The only downside is that, unlike other bookstores, they don't really cultivate a "sit and read for a bit" ambience. There aren't any comfy armchairs (or any chairs, really), so if you want to read a little of a book to see if it's worth taking home, then be prepared to read standing up. read more
