I've long been a fan of the Half Price Books chain, a chain started in Dallas in 1972. You could pretty much say I've grown up with Half Price Books. I'm pretty stunned that I've never reviewed this location, though I don't frequent it nearly as much since I moved into Lawrence Township. I grew up in Pike Township and this really was my location for many years. In my opinion, it's one of the most accessible of the Indy HPB locations and I've always been pleased with my experiences here. I was in this area checking out His Place Eatery and nostalgia demanded I return for a visit to this HPB. This location has two entrances. Both sides offer accessible parking, though the side facing West 86th Street is definitely more accessible. One side has a double glass doorway, the other has a single glass door. Both sides offer curb cuts, though the side facing West 86th Street has a much easier grade. For those familiar with HPB, there's the consistency you can expect - reasonably priced books, CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, and even some VHS. Books are incredibly well organized and there's always a nicely done clearance section. They also have novelty stuff - like t-shirts, games, etc. The employees here are always friendly - I've had multiple friends work for HPB over the years and they always praise the chain. Most, of course, end up leaving for financial reasons, however, they all remember HPB with a sense of nostalgia. On this visit, I noticed there was a local author doing a book signing. Since I nearly always support local authors, I bought his book. The aisles are always in good shape here. The store is clean. There's a public bathroom that's pretty accessible. Employees are always willing to help. And yes, you can still sell them your used books/CDs/movies. And yes, you still won't get much. I've been to just about every HPB location in Central Indiana. This one has a special place in my heart as I really kind of grew up with it. I guess you could say it's my favorite HPB in Indy. This HPB is well organized, has a wonderful selection, offers friendly and helpful service, and is likely the most accessible HPB in the society. All in all, it's a winner and it sure was nice to get back for a visit. read more

Probably a good place to buy and browse books, terrible place to sell books! Spent about 1.5 hours there on a Monday to sell about 75-100 books (all in very good condition). After all that, offered a TOTAL of $15.45 for all of them. Next time, I'll donate rather than waste 2 hours trying to sell them for a penny on the dollar. Based on what HPB is buying the books for, the prices should be HALF what they are. Not impressed, except that the staff was nice and worked fairly quickly given the volume of books I presented. read more

This is the largest halfprice I've been in. Quite a bit of vinyl records and cds. Haven't seen the Taschen book before called "1000 extra/ordinary objects" . So I picked up that. Taschen always has amazing books. A large children's section too. The more expensive books/records are locked, but it seems there is always someone around to open them for you. Music in the store was a tolerable level so I could mostly tune it out. read more

So, yesterday evening Wednesday around 6ish on April 13th it was a beautiful day outside so I decided after work to go on a car ride to vibe to the music and enjoy the music. Then, I decided to go to Half Price Books store out on W. 86th Street which I'm glad I did go out there. There are plenty of parking spaces, walking in the building there are no stairs just a low ramp sidewalk. Upon entering inside HPB store I noticed so many good deals on books, music, games. Etc. I haven't been to HPB store in a long while that I forgot the store has a lot of great items. I was actually going to the store looking for some IT books, but I didn't find those books I was looking for at all. Instead, I bought two books The Help for $2 & new Viola Davis book Finding Me for $14.39. Also, if you have books that's in great condition you can sell to Half Price Books for cash. I have so many books so I'm definitely going to cash in on some of my books. The staff there were friendly, professional, and most importantly very helpful. I could spend hours in here. I do spend hours in here. They carry so much stuff to read and do. Books, books on tape, calendars, stationary, puzzles, games, toys, movies - I could go on and on. Children's books, cookbooks, travel books, fiction, gardening, historical - they carry it all. And supplies - reading lights, markers, album covers, and more. It's a great place to pick up gifts. Most of the books are new. The store is well organized and it is easy to find stuff. They keep the shelves neat. The prices are fantastic - most books are more than half price off. I've been coming here for years. When my collection gets too big, I bring them back and they buy them back. Not for much (money) but I know my books with have a new life. Popping into half price books on a Saturday afternoon is always a good idea. There were lots of people buzzing about but everyone was keeping space with one person allowed in an aisle at a time and masks required. So much more than a book store! You can find journals, stationary, albums, games, cards, and some great gift ideas too! I found a fun pair of socks for a friend. So random and so perfect. This is a more condensed HPB than some other locations, but still a strong selection. There are two entry doors - the side (directly to the places you sell your stuff) and the front (where you walk in and see the new/popular books). Lots of comic options, including manga. They have a great older book section - like old children's books that can be fun to buy if you want to read stuff a few decades old (a great opportunity to relive your own childhood). The clearance section is small, but has some good finds. The movie selection is large, and right next to CDs and then comic books - so a great area of the store. I've found a lot of great academic books in sociology, sexuality, race, and gender studies. Service is great. There is an older woman whose name I forget (its an older name as well, like Esther or something) and she is AMAZING. Always cracking some jokes; very playful and sweet. read more

Half Price Books is a wonderful used bookstore and music store that has a wide selection of books, CD's, DVD 's, and vinyl albums for the collector. You can even bring in your own books or CDs to the store to trade in for cash! I brought in my old CD's to trade in for cash, and was happy with the amount I was given for them. You will have to keep in mind that it is at the store's discretion whether they will take your old books or CD'S to sell in the store and give you money. Do not expect to get a full value amount for your old books or CDs. The store has a wonderful selection of old and current books in hardback and paperback. The selection of vinyl albums and CD'S is very impressive as well. They even have a great selection of DVD'S and VHS tapes as well. I was very surprised with how great this bookstore really is and with their selection of books. I would definitely come back here again to pick up a book I need for a book club discussion or a vinyl album for a good friend who is a collector. It is a wonderful venue for shopping. read more

Random prices for book buy back but my dad seemed happy with what he got for a few records, nice staff, massive selection or well ordered inventory, cool to see popular trash novels and ancient rare stuff all in one room. Lots to see from games, music, toys, and friendly staff but they make you hang around while they run thru the stuff brought in. I wish there was more options for selling my stuff - if something really isn't worth it but others are tell me! I would rather move it to a Goodwill if the best I can do is 10 cents. I understand that may be impossible considering demand and inventory are always changing but anything to moderate the process would be a huge help for people like me who haven't much stock in books and mess with them once a decade but when we do it's an affair. read more

Having spent thousands of dollars over the past few years and being a loyal customer, I find myself not wanting to go back. Taking books into sell, because I am in a current financial hardship and them not even coming close to giving me what they are worth is a massive insult. I had to take the money because I have no other choice right now and the lack of compassion by some of the staff just put a massive bad taste in my mouth. Of course I am biased because I know the worth of the items I brought in, yet I think they would not know true value if it bit them in the ass. What a joke. I do not have any plans on buying anything from them again when I get back on my financial feet. I am sure they won't loose any sleep or care about my review, but whenever asked about them in the future I will not say good things. read more

So I see this place everyday and decided to check it out. I went there looking for a specific genealogy book, that I can't get on my Kindle or iPad in hopes of maybe being able to find it cheaper than Barnes & Noble (190.00). No such luck. They've got an average amount of books, and other audio stories. Kind of reminded me of what a library might have in stock. While I was there I looked up anything audio from Keith Morrison or Peter Thomas, no such luck there either. And while their prices are definitely lower than Barnes & Noble in general, their claim of having books for half price is a little bit stretched. I mean they do have reduced books and off the top of my head I think one of them was 18.95 reduced down to 12.95, great savings if your checking out with 10 or more books. Each time I have visited Half Price Books, the staff is always helpful in helping me find what I am in search of. I am always interested in paying less for books because I have paid full price for books for YEARS only to not need the books for YEARS. Today I was looking for books for medical classes. Unfortunately while they did not have what I was looking for, I as always was assisted in trying to find what I needed. I did find a great photography book instead and saved over 80%! My companion of the day also found items that were needed and of course a major savings. What I really appreciate about Half Price Books is the quality of the books that they sell. These books are so close to new that it is hard to tell that they have been possibly previously pre-owned. I do wish they had more comfortable seating as well as upgrade the restroom. read more

What I love about HPB: things are half-priced or almost free. Duh. And they have more than just books -- DVDs, CDs, records, magazines, textbooks, movies, stationery, etc. A trip to HPB is always dangerous b/c you never know what you'll find! What I don't love about HPB: Selling to them is just not worth it, in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, they will buy anything...but not for very much. Waited around for 1.5 hours browsing while waiting for them to assess my stuff. I brought in three full bags of books, CDs, and DVDs and walked out with a measly $10. Either sell your books online if you're looking to make money or donate to Goodwill, etc. and get a tax write off. read more

I forget how much I love Half Price Books when I haven't been for a while. This one seemed to have an awful lot of fiction, and while the humor section was well-stocked with a lot of stuff I hadn't seen before (lots of parodies), I thought I was going to leave empty-handed until I hit the clearance section. Back before Kindles, iPads and e-readers, books contained paper and ink. You didn't have to worry about running out of battery life when reading, and people referred to where they were in the book by Chapters, not by percent. I know.. things have changed. Think of Half Price Book as an antique store for books. All of those old heavy things people threw in backpacks (the original use for them, incidentally) and carted around end up in stores like this. Those of us "old timers" who like to sometimes sit by the fire and read a book instead of clutching our iPads find great deals here, usually for about half the price you'd buy it new. Half Price Books really is a great place to find a book you've been looking for at a great price. Sometimes I go in just to browse and end up with books from my favorite authors that I didn't know existed, or books from my childhood that I had forgotten about. Whenever I have some time on my hands to just stroll around - I find myself here. I'm not an Avid reader (why sit and read when I can go explore the world) but the variety of books, gifts, and other novelties Half Price has its totally worth your while. One thing I did notice that I hadn't noticed before was that this half price location has a game section. Now, most of the games are amazingly priced! However, I was specifically looking for a game called Spyfall and at this location it was $20. Ouch! I actually got it off of Amazon Prime for $18. I know it's only $2 difference but at a half price place, it should have been a little less. During this trip, I think I realized this is a great place to buy people gifts! There is so much variety and lots of unique things. I questioned myself as to why I didn't come more often to get gifts. You better believe I will now! Overall good experience! read more

I always assume everyone has been into Half Priced Books then I run into someone who recently stumbled across the book store and fell in love like so many of us. The prices are incredible, store is large, clean, well-organized with each area clearly marked appropriately. The selections are amazing and you can spend hours browsing or just go directly to the area you need. In the back of the store you'll find an area well marked to bring your used books to resale. They will review and make their offer during your visit. Many of the books still on the racks at Borders are here for pennies on the dollar and in excellent shape. Their staff is super friendly, helpful and always nearby if you need them. These are just a few of the examples you'll find at Half Priced Books if you're a first timer. I would like to start by saying that this post is over $0.35. I took about eight books to sell today that I bought less than a year ago from the very same store. I paid on average about $5 per book. In some cases up to 10. When I took them all back to sell back today the guy behind the counter offered me $4.65 for all 8. Sell your books on a garage sale, or better yet donate them to your local library. When I asked him if I could at least have it rounded up to $5 he said no that wouldn't be possible. I state again I had spent about $40 on these books at their store and he couldn't even come up $0.35. read more

Unfriendly staff, they try not to speak to customers. But definitely don't sell your books at this location. I've tried 3 times now, and the most I've been offered is $3 for a pile of books. I took the books back, and looked up only ONE of the books on Ebay (mine is first edition, like new condition), and found a few sold within the past month for at least $30. I can only assume HPB offered me $0.20 for that book which I can spend 5 minutes to list it on Ebay and almost certainly sell it for $25 (they won't itemize it to show you what is offered for each book). read more

I love my e-reader, but there's something about the smell of books that takes me back to when I was a little girl; hiding under my blanket with a flash light and a good book. This is the only HPB that I frequent and I think it's well organized for a resale book shop. Definitely not the same as some of the other book shops (mostly in CA) I've visited where there are just stacks of books laying around. Chaos drives me nuts! I've found many old favorites, new favorites and favorites I never knew existed. And since book prices here are extremely cheap, I can induldge in my vice of young adult vampire or witch books. :P Jeffrey Eugenides, George R.R. Martin (HEY, I read his books before it was cool to watch it on HBO), Hunter S. Thompson, Robert Jordan (I WILL FINISH THIS SERIES), Gabriel Garcia Marquez and some of my other favorite writers can be found here. They also have a great selection on graphic novels that I use to pay full price at the comic book store. Now if there is something I want to read, I make sure to check HPB first. They don't have many manga books, but I've found some series on clearance that I didn't mind paying $1 for a book. Books are usually in great condition, and are much cheaper than you'd get at Borders. That being said, they're not going to have every book you're looking for. This place is really clean, well organized and has friendly staff. My only concern was the difficulty of finding what I was looking for. I couldn't easily find the section I was looking for, and had a hard time finding an employee to help me. I eventually found it and was happy with the selection, but I'd need this place to be easier to navigate for that 5th star. read more

Ummmm...can we say ....HEAVEN ON A BOOK LOVERS EARTH?!?!!? I love this place. They recently redid the cashier area and now it is much less crowded and more organized. I do think they jip you a bit on the value of hard covers and I can't seem to figure out their system on how they come up with a value for the books that you trade in, but I assume it has to do with supply/demand/condition. The only other reason I give this place a 4 is b/c sometimes they don't have what I'm looking for. I can't expect perfection b/c it's obviously not a NEW book type of bookstore, but I have to admit, I get disappointed when I'm looking for something specific and they don't have it. I do think it is well organized and easy to find titles if you do know what you are looking for and their soft covers are beyond cheap, so I think that is great. They have a HUGE selection and I always leave with a variety of books for less than $30. I am an avid bookie and I hate spending $12-$18 per book and with no library near by, this is the next best thing! The staff is helpful and polite, they offer gift cards and some fun options for gifts, good variety of books in all subjects under the sun, CDs, DVDs, magazines, etc. and there is also an area to relax and read. It's a great little joint! I will continue to go back again and again and will always leave with my arms full of the next month's worth of literature. Score!! read more

This is one of the better HPB's in Indy. Their service is a lot faster than Avon, but the amount they give you for any book seems smaller than any other location. Their selection of DVD's although immense, is littered with B titles - Castleton is much better. They also have an immense and awesome selection of vinyl records for those that still have a good turntable and some vinyl singles for DJ's who still prefer wax singles over MP3's.Their CD selection is excellent. Their book selection is very good with everthing from hard to find authors (see Ntozake Shange) to classics. They're not as large as other stores, but they stack their books higher than most so there is a whole 'nother shelf up there! Their children's section is also very good, with a full catalogue of never read Maisy paperbacks and several selection of Disney Princess collection (for those of you with pre-school daughters) to several of Mo Willems' books in his various series. read more

Who does not like HPB! I like going here because they also offer a great selection of books. I'll usually in the bible, christian, and self-help areas. I also love coming here if I have missed one or more of my favorite magazines, I looking checking here to see if they have it. Coming to HPB's always makes me happy. I like this location of HPB, but I have seen better. I was a little disappointment that the clearance area for the kids sections was VERY disorganized. Also, why are teen bibles in the teen/kids section and not in the bible section...that was confusing. I was also disappointment in the small collections of journals. I've just seen better in other states. But overall, I was able to find four good baby books to read to my godbaby at night for cheap. I'll be back and hope that they get a bit more organized. read more

Because I'm a sucker for a business (that is...bookstore) that I can spend hours in, and walk out with sacks full of metaphors when I walked in with only a crumpled Andy Jackson greenback in my hand. A real bookstore, where curiosity and getting lost thrives, where we attempt to defeat time. If Faulkner was right when he said that, "time is the mausoleum of all hope and desire," then this book store is the maternity ward of all hope and desire. Mind! Eyes! Give birth to an endless expanse of books, from all realms! All arenas! Books by the yard is one of the most interesting ideas and purchases you could ever make. Their $1 clearance section has more of a selection than most bookstores. They also have rare, first editions available, too. For a company that has multiple locations...they've done a fine job of never making it feel un-original once you're inside. The only bookstore in Indy where I'm comfortable opening a book, and plopping in the aisle for an hour. read more

So I fell in love. It was a bit awkward at first because we sort of bumped into each other after I had just broken up with Borders. Never fear. The intensity of the attraction to LOWER priced books pushed away any awkwardness and had my heart thumping at the idea of spending so much time together. I am an avid reader and spend money on books like other people spend it on...well, whatever they're into I suppose. While I'm not partial to getting my books one way or another - I order from Amazon, I frequent both Barnes & Noble and Borders - I often try this store first. Because......as the name implies, you can get things here for a lot less dough. Granted, you're not going to find everything here. If you're after the latest from Oprah's book club, HPB likely won't be of help, unless you're way behind the curve. However, I've always been able to find more than I came for, including most of my tomes on yoga, alternative medicine, spirituality, etc. And, when I do purchase full-priced books I decide are not to become part of my small personal library, I take them to HPB to sell...what a deal! Needless to say, I rarely get cash for them. I prefer to use my takings as a credit toward more stuff. This store also has some audio, some gifty things like journals and such and is a haven for those of you who like paperback novel series. read more

My favorite place for resell books!! The place is very neatly organized and easy to navigate, lots of different sections and aisles to scavenge! They even have music and video game sections which helps to entertain my younger siblings. I always find a good book here for an even better price. They have a rewards program but I'm not in the area often enough to use it as much as I would like.
