My issues have nothing to do with buying there. My issue is selling to them. You will get ripped off. And I'm not applying this for items like old paperbacks of John Grisham and Dan Brown. I went to sell a few records and keeping in that I'm not directly selling to someone and they have to pay for overhead, they still tried to rip me off. This isn't just my opinion. They offered me just under $30 for my vinyl. Another store gave me $78 and if I had gone for store credit, I would've had over $80. I was given over 60% more than what Half Priced Books offered. This was not a one time thing. If you sell to Half Priced books they will rip you off. Period. read more

I recently brought in 6 boxes of cds, dvds and books to sell. An employee wheeled out a cart to load up from my car (customers not allowed to take out handcarts). They notified me that it was a busy morning and that there were several customers in front of me. Note: don't sell your stuff on a Friday morning. When they finally called my name I felt like I won the Lotto. My offer...wait for it...was $70. Not bad, although I think there was lots of good stuff in there. I love the bookstore feel and even though I rarely sell here, I always find some great deals on some awesome books and collectible items. Staff is very kind every time I've been here. We're in the process of purging our house so I brought in about 40 books yesterday. While the staff @ Half Price Books spent approximately 30 minutes looking at the books I brought in I checked out a few books in the travel section. I was paged to come up to the counter to see what kind of fortune I would receive for my books. Imagine my surprise when they told me I would receive a whopping 91 cents for my books. Mehhh I don't know what other options I have. I brought 30 books into the store to sell. the books were in very good condition. I had to show identification. Then I was told I could not leave the store.The books were hard cover. After waiting 30 minutes I was called to the counter. I was told my books were worth $2.46. I could not believe it. What a rip off. Not even pennies on the dollar. I saw they also buy, DVD tapes VHS and Vinyl records. I have many, I will never return. Wasted time and gas. Do yourself a favor if you have any items, do not set yourself up for disappointment. I recently went to a place that billed itself as having "hard to find books and records."Boy, they weren't kidding! Nothing was in alphabetical order. Half Price l Half Price Books gets three stars because they do have vinyl LPs. The prices are on the Higher side. Sometimes ridiculously so. Sometimes they are really scratched. However, what I don't like is how so many records are just crammed down low. You can't see them. Shoved in so tightly you can't pull them out. A little intel on selling your books. Bring in only about 12 at a time- they have more area to scan them than the 50 I brought in. Even though I was in que before others, others with smaller stacks were taken first. The staff is great. I heard others getting $70.00; 15.45; and I was offered $6.57 for 1.5 hour wait. read more

My visit to an HPB, and this place is great!  I saw somewhere recently that they make offers on used books (and music and video CD's, vinyls, comics, games, etc), and thought I would give them a try instead of making my usual used book donation to the public library or neighborhood Little Free Library box. And, yees, I got the full experience here too!, and I'll explain.  I brought in a small box of books (maybe 10 books, I could have brought more, but this was more or less a trial) and was directed to an area where a guy and a lady were scanning in materials for quotes.  The friendly guy asked me to place my box down and said they would get back to me shortly, maybe in 20 minutes after they got through a hugh stash of vinyls someone had just brought in.  As I browsed some music CD's nearby, loudly over the intercom the lady announces  "so-and-so, we have your quote ready".  That was kinda neat I thought.  Then the guy says to me through his mask  "Howard, we'll get to your box very shortly".  I said, "Hey, I wanted to hear my name over the intercom!"  And the guy says to his lady colleague (Amalia was her name I think) "Howard wants to have the full experience, ok!", haha.  After maybe a total wait of 15 minutes, it's announced loudly so no one in the store could miss it - "Howard, we have your quote ready".  Cool!  I got a $7.59 cash offer for my books, which was $7.59 more than my usual outlets.  Wow, this process and the browsing was pretty fun, and this visit could very well be the highlight of my week, lol.  To be fair though, don't come here expecting to get big bucks, it's just not gonna happen.  Seriously, they scan every book and have software that values for resale every item brought in based on their national database.  At least that's what they told me.  Many customers bring in stuff that has no value and no offer is made I was also told.  I had fun browsing but was also disciplined and restrained myself from buying more stuff I really didn't need.  Anyway, HPB is highly recommended for used goods and their buying process if you've never checked them out. read more

I approached HPB as I have purchased from them many times. This time I wanted to sell some of the books I have amassed in my post graduate studies. The dollar amount of this collection, mostly history and WWII history is staggering. I needed to clear space on my shelves as I continued my post graduate studies. The people were nice, but the offering wasn't even pennies on the dollar!!! I know they are a business - but this all or nothing price offering was sickening. I will not return to this vendor - ever and will tell others to do the same. The attitude of "We don't sell a lot of history or military history...we don't cater to that..." was downright atrocious. Like many others who have commented here, i was sadly disappointed with both visits to this store. I am clearing out a huge collection of a wide variety of books - some collectibles and some admittedly probably worth very little. But once you set your boxes down (and I did have many!), they've got you! Their offers are paltry at best, robbery at worst. And then they lay out the "do you accept the offer" as a cudgel. Take it or leave it, and if you leave it, pack up these books and get them the hell outta here! Well, who wants to repack their books and cart them back to their cars?! They don't care. They are obviously in the business of making $, but there are several other bookstores that will offer more...not a lot more, but absolutely more than HPB. They also ripped me off of a couple of Century of Progress brochures that I had mistakenly left in a pile of All Star programs they bought. No one ever said a thing about them, even while I inquired about the prices offered for the different things I'd brought in. I should never have gone back a second time, and will never be back again. I can't really speak to buying from them, but after looking around while waiting for my offers, they certainly aren't cheap, and in some cases overpriced. I was in Niles doing some shopping & decided to stop by this location. Been here before a few times before. As usual no one speaks, at least to me or husband but we move on. After searching the store for finds, we are ready to check out. Waited in assigned spot. The cashier never said anything just gave a signal that we were next. She rung up items, no words until she mentioned the total of $16.67. I gave her 67 cents in change and a $20 bill but placed it on the counter. She sighed then placed my receipt & $4 on top of receipt and said nothing. This company hires some of the oddest, weirdest people. Half Priced Books turned from a relatively decent used merchandise retailer to a husk of what it used to be. First of all, NEVER sell anything to them if you can avoid it. They are notorious for lowballing anyone who sells items to them and it's even WORSE than it used to be. I sold some items a few weeks ago out of desperation. I needed grocery money. If I hadn't needed the money so badly and immediately, I would have sold my items elsewhere. Even if you take into consideration what they can give sellers to still make a profit, their practices can't be justified. At best gave they gave me 15% of what my items were worth. If your items are not worth much donate them. If they are worth something, sell them online or to a more reputable place. They are just ripping people off at this point and honestly that goes for the price they are selling things at now. I bought a book that was new elsewhere a few days before I was last in this store. The book cost me a little under $5 with tax. HPB were selling the same book, in the same condition for around $11.95 before tax. There is a Barnes and Noble in the same strip mall. I've seen HPB selling the same version of a classic book in used (beaten up, highlighted) condition at the same price as a new barebones copy at B & N. I know HPB is staying to stay afloat in a world that has online options and independent bookstores but the gouging is ridiculous. Before you buy what you think is a hidden gem/good deal, check the prices online on your phone. The plus side is their salespeople are usually knowledgeable and fun to talk to. However, this is retail, most stores have a high turnover. HPB is no exception. The fun, knowledgeable person you spoke to last month, if they haven't left, is burnt out and not so friendly. My friends I shit you not this was by far and away the worst interaction I've had in a retail establishment in years. Indifference is, in my opinion, the most insulting way to deal with a consumer. The folks here need to bone up on there people skills from the cashier to the store security person. I love this store for discounted books, but they totally rip you off if you try to sell your used books. Today I took 2 tote bags; one with paperbacks and the other with pre-teen novels, and they gave me $6. Even though they have a teen section, they told me they would probably end up donating mine to teachers. Later I returned with 3 very large and heavy bags filled with adult books; mainly English literature classics and a lot of best selling fiction. I had several John Grishams, Jodi Picoults, James Pattersons, Dan Browns, and many more well known authors and titles from best seller lists. Also more hardcovers (in great condition) than paperbacks. They offered me $10! Only $4 more than the 2 totes, for a lot more books. Starting to eliminate things and decided to sell some LPs, CDs, DVDs, etc. Took them to the store and dropped off... which was a mistake because, which I learned later, I was supposed to wait. Well, I received a call that i should have waited as they were done but I was already home. I told them I could not drive back but could come the next day. Then the manager got on the phone and spoke to me like a 2 year old child. I did not know their process and thought they took time.. but apparently not. Well, I went back the next day, and they offered me $4.85 for everything, stating that nothing was good and they would have to recycle. Hogwsh. I've been shopping here for years, not just for books but for DVDs because I hate streaming movies and then my internet signal gets lost in the middle of the night. I put on a DVD and watch the film in its entirety.They also have CDs and vinyl albums for collectors. Nice place to shop for oddities at a reasonable price. Everything is well organized and sometimes I really enjoy a random hunt, browsing around for nothing in particular when all of a sudden something catches my eye. Great spot for shopping for books. Selections vary, as can prices. When I arrive I immediately head to the clearance section. Total disarray, but worth the time to peruse the shelves for some spectacular finds. Books in this section can be had for $1 to $3 in great shape. They also stock magazines in the clearance section as well. Nicely organized by sections. Spacious. Well lit. Minimal interaction with the staff. Lots of parking. I signed up for the discount email program. Called my local HPB store. Told me the book I wanted (Erik Laron's new book about Churchill) was in stock. Brought my coupon and not only not in stock at my store but, ALL OTHER STORES. Then told me my coupon would not be honored when they got new copies in stock. Offered me a 10% discount vs 50%! They then pushed to sell me other books. I had this happen before and discount was honored on new shipment arriving. I have been 20 year customer of HFB but, NO MORE! I would rather pay 100% at full price than step foot in that place again. I feel taken advantage of and "bait and switched". Done, done and done!! read more

You're better off donating your books or dvds to Salvation Army or Goodwill. At least it's for the better good. You won't get much selling your books or dvds, even if you have tv series. Trust me. When the employees are inspecting your items you bring in, they say they'll call you by the intercom. Expect to hang in the store for like 30 minutes, give or take. The books and dvds they sell are pricey still especially used. If you want to waste your time here selling your stuff and get $1 for your whole items, this is the place for you. This used to be a great place to find comics, but who ever is running that section now has completely ruined the pricing of the comic section. The name of the store is "HALF PRICE BOOK" yet they have current comics almost double the cover price. The person who runs it also does not understand that comic spine crease and ticks knocks down the value of a comic book. I think they go to a random site and price the books as if they are New Mint when they clearly are not. They also stopped putting their clearance Comic Books in a bag and board and are putting stickers on the books damaging them even more. Their "higher priced" books are in a locked box that is unorganized and has the books loose so they are bending and damaging the books. I used to come here a LOT, but until they get a new comic person I am done with this store not only for comics, but for all my other family book needs. read more

The employees here tonight were insufferable. Balding middle aged white guy and an 40 something year white woman with short black hair and the worst eyebrows I've ever seen in person. I believe these two truly dislike working with the public and it surely showed tonight. I asked for a simple book lookup and was passed to 3 different employees before anyone cared enough to help me. The guy legit asked me "Yeah what do you want?" Uh some help, obviously. Before I could even open my mouth he told someone else to help me. I asked for a stock check and this woman said to look online. Okay like if I were home and not in a store you're paid to work in. She allegedly checked the stock and they didn't show my book anywhere nearby but of course could order it. So I did what she said. I looked online and shocker - found the book. I then called the other store and confirmed they have the physical copy there. When I told the clerk she said "That's crazy- they probably just got it in stock!" Or you lied. There's also that. She had the nerve to giggle about it. I chocked it up to her being in a bad mood because one of her roommates probably ate some of her food. Whatevs. read more

So the 2 star rating is essentially an average. Here's the breakdown friends: Prices: 4 Stars I collect pop-up books and I've had some nice, reasonably priced finds. I compare the prices to eBay, etc. and have saved a few bucks buying them here. So not too shabby, but... Selling: 2 Stars You get pennines on the dollar for selling your books. I know you think your first edition, hard cover, Steven King's The Shining is going bring beaucoup bucks. It's not. You're going to get an unapologetic offer of 50 cents paired with an air of indifference. Customer Service: 0 Stars Every employee I've encountered has mastered the art of pretension. It's truly amazing. There is a particular woman with short black hair that is exceptionally pretentious. I've come to the conclusion she practices being unfriendly on her days off. read more

I have buying books here for several years and have always had a positive experience there. Reasonable prices and friendly staff.

Half Price Books used to be a diggers paradise. At some point, they got savvy as to the bargains lingering on their shelves and started upping the price of CDs and vinyl quite a bit. It's no longer the bargain it once was. I used to take a lot of chances given the low prices and buy here regularly (as well as at other Half Price locations) but not as much as in recent years. There are still bargains to be found if you search. They sell overpriced new vinyl but the used sections are still the most fun. I give them 4 stars for variety, 2 stars for pricing. Some helpful advice: Don't sell stuff here unless you are desperate. If you have music, make your way into the city and sell at Reckless Records. That is, if you're trading in decent quality music. If you have Jim Nabors, Christmas records and Lawrence Welk tunes, just donate those to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army. Half Price won't pay much and I don't blame them, it's a business with slim margins but you're better off either donating to a local charity or little library for books, or one of the record stores in the city if it's music. Just call first and make sure they're interested in your collection. read more

While some of their things might not be as cheap as one might think, they do have a variety of books, magazines and other media for reasonable prices. They've got everything from journals, to calendars, books, magazines, software, records, DVDs, cassettes, cards, games, toys, Bibles, comics, and so much more! It's a wonder how they fit everything in the space that the have. The quality of their merchandise is also fairly good with many of their items in good to new condition. While they don't have much space to sit and read, it's generally not so packed so you can stand for a while leisurely while checking out the books. Whenever I need a particular book for class or for a gift (don't judge) this is always my first stop. read more

Half price books is probably one of my favorite places to go. I could spend hours and hours in here! They have such a great selection of books, dvds, cds, video games, board games, you name it! I just recently discovered they have a "vintage book" collection that you can find in the very front near the door and in the back by the restrooms. I was hunting for a certain sci fi novel that I found in minutes. They have really great deals on their used books but they also have a great stock of new books. I haven't sold any books at this location but I did while in another state. You can make a decent deal back. I would highly recommend coming here if you like a great deal on used items in great condition. read more

Half Price comes very close to being the perfect utilitarian used bookstore. You pay used prices, but enjoy the physical shopping benefits of a chain--a clean, clearly labelled, well organized facility. It's like the best of both worlds. Plus, their staff are great. I often come here when I am looking for a specific title. Two of the last four times, I've found it. That is one of the advantages of size and organization. But effective table, aisle-end and shelf-top displays make it a great browsing experience, too. I've made several interesting finds that way. And you'll never spend too much either, even for new books. Fiction is a strength, but they have many other well stocked sections. Always check out the "Old and Interesting" cart: like a little slice of that other kind of awesome used bookstore, the dim, creaky, crotchety-ownered basement space full of dusty hardcover treasures. All of these items are priced between one and five dollars. I have made some incredible discoveries on that cart, the greatest of which was a complete six-volume set of A Thousand Nights and a Night (aka The Arabian Nights) translated by Sir Richard Burton. It was a 1962 reprinting of the 1934 Heritage Press edition. A few years ago, I looked all over creation for a complete Burton Arabian Nights but had given up hope. Imagine finding it here, at a store where these types of books aren't even their strength. And the three tomes were only $3 apiece! It just goes to show that you never know what you might find if you take a little extra time and effort to dig. I haven't bought any CDs or DVDs, and selection on the games isn't nearly as broad as on the movies or books, but I always find at least one PC or old Xbox game for cheap whenever I want one. Maybe it turns out to be a crappy game, but for five bucks, your risk is low. Plus they buy. I've only sold stuff once, but it seemed like a reasonable offer--$8 for six various books in good to very good condition. I don't get rid of very many books, but perhaps I'll try them again to sell some magazines, DVDs, and video games. And in the meantime I'll keep going back for those specific-book missions and occasional aimless browsing. read more

One thing I never grow tired of is reading books. Now a lot of people prefer reading books on their Kindle or Nook but I digress. My first time in to Half Price books was like stepping back into the 1980's or 90's. Books everywhere neatly arranged plus CD's,DVDs, and yes Vinyl records. And the prices.As they advertise. New books,used books,hard to find books and at a very fair price. I love reading Sci-Fi and there is plenty Sci-Fi here. And in the southeast corner of the store books marked clearance even cheaper than the rest of the books. There is something personal about reading a book visualising it in your mind. And the best part of a physical book vs an electronic one is not having Amazon or Ebay trying to be your new mommy and banning it or refusing to sell it. Half Price books is tucked away in the southwest corner of Point Plaza just to the right of Dicks sporting goods. Lots to find here plus they do purchase books and other forms of media. And they have good music playing in the background. And cool staff. I'm really glad I found this place. read more
