#34/2024 Half Price books a chain found in Dallas Texas in 1972 some changes through the years Not quite the fanciness of a Barnes & nobles there's no real sitting areas and cafe with coffee or anything of the such. Currently with about 20 of the 50 states they're located in opening up a few more they're mostly located near bigger cities in the suburbs. They have their own little niche like core customers for the most part. But it's a good place because bookstores are really not in the malls anymore and it's nice to find stand alone like a B&N Some people have complained about this place when they go to sell stuff while it is what it is by the market if you bring a pile of CDs that are just garbage and nobody wants them they're not going to give you much money. Same goes for books Now all that being put aside I've shopped here quite a few times I haven't reviewed it. Like a Barnes and nobles they carry pretty much all the same latest books they also carry magazine CDs games and a whole lot more. Although their name does live up to it the books are half price. So if you go to buy a brand new book let's say it's marked it 40 bucks you're going to pay 20. There stuff is a little different but it's still pretty good. I bought some used CDs and they give you a warranty if it doesn't play right or if it's scratch cuz it's used bring it back I bought numerous ones in fact. No issue so far The only couple of drawbacks has to the five stars here is the staff can be a little aloof and often their own world and you have to try to bring them back to reality if you need to ask an important question. The other issue unlike Barnes and nobles they got rid of their plastic bags So if you buy a lot of stuff you better buy some of their bags canvas ones like every other place has or bring your own bag!!! read more

I've been to many half prices around the 50 mile radius and this one was is the worst. I mean in customer service the managers are awful. I've been here twice and both experiences I left unhappy with the way they speak to me. I have my uttermost respect to employees everywhere I go and I expect the same respect as a customer. I brought in a tote full of hard cover books, maybe 50 paperbacks, 2 brand new still wrapped in plastic boxed sets and a few other things and got $20. The majority of the items were in excellent used condition. I would have been better off setting a table up in my driveway and selling them for $0.50 each. Wow! I walked in around 16:30 and walked out when they closed at 20:00. I love books!!! If you love books, this is the store for you! It makes me sad to see so many bookstores have closed down. No more Borders. Very few Barnes and Nobles. Those used to be my go to spots to hang out. I'd check out the CDs, but a book (ha! I don't think I ever just bought ONE- I always bought a bunch), order a hot chocolate, and sit and read in the cafe. I thought those days were long gone. BUT low and behold, this book store is here to save the day! They have a large record selection as well as books and everything is priced well. In addition to used books, they have brand new (as in recently published as well as new) items in the front of the store- books and journals- marked down in price. They buy books as well as sell them. So once you are done reading them, you can bring 'em back and sell them back to the store. It's a win win! (I keep all of my books; they are hard to part with. But one day, I may sell them to a place like this). In addition to the great normal prices, they have a clearance section in the back. My sister and I were in town visiting family so we decided to check this bookstore out. Very cool place, it's not just adult, young adult and kid books but also vinyls, cds, video games/cartridges, manga, cassette tapes, action figures, funko pops, journals, board games and random lil trinkets. They even had a clearance section like $2 for a new Patterson book! Only bought books here so I don't know how much you get for selling. *Bathrooms were clean, just funny sitting on the toilet with Marilyn Monroe on the wall staring back at me. Lols *I've only been to a couple other discount book stores and this one is more organized, clean, no funky smells and a good variety of books. I like how there are shopping carts too! * I was happily surprised to see they had some BTS albums in new condition for less than half off so ya know I grabbed a few!!! * Some people mentioned rude staff but I had a pleasant experience with them. One of the guys even walked me to the bookshelf when I asked for a certain book. Customers kept to themselves but were polite. It's def worth checking out this place. The only reason it is only good is because it can be a little awkward to get in and out of it since its right off of LaGrange and that the prices on some things that ARENT books are a little higher than I had expected. I have been visiting Half Price Bookstore in Orland park for the last 10 years probably. I am someone who still love the feel of a book. I work with computers so I am constantly looking at it and also my phone. So I want to feel a book in my hand and turn the pages but I don't want to spend a fortune on new books. I know..I know..I'm frugal because I also browse the clearance section. But how am I going to try every genre of books if I'm constantly paying $20 a book! So I get the clearance books and try all the ones I like. I've actually gotten some great reads if it wasn't for clearance! If you're in the Orland park location and a music, book, game, movie lover.... definitely stop by. There are 3 locations but I actually find the most at the Orland park location. This is by far my favorite place to find books and get lost. Lol A book store that has gently used books, videos. Dvd's, games and more... People donate and people get to read and donate back again if they choose to! IT'S THE CIRCLE OF LIFE! LOL I went in looking for a specific book. But I roamed around for a while and enjoyed reading the backs of many interesting book for potential purchase. There is SO MUCH to explore! The books are all fairly priced and to make it even more exciting, they have a clearance section on already discounted book!!!!! Yeeeeehaaawww!!! Half Price Books is a great place to purchase books. I have been to three locations and haven't been disappointed. I decided to check them out because I was in the area. I usually search through the African American history section. It's always a small section in HPB but I was surprised to find books that I actually had on my list and in GOOD condition. Before I buy any books; I have an habit to compare them online. I always buy them when they are less expensive to buy at HPB .. It's a great store... I took my little cousin and she was able to find something in the teens section. I also like their black history month book section for kids. Staff was great with helping me search for books. I would say .. I wish HPB would have more space/ chairs for more people to sit and read. I would definitely continue to buy books from HPB... but if your interesting in selling... Don't expect a lot of money back for them cause I'm assuming you will be very disappointed. I spent $36 for 4 books. The three books I bought was easily $45 online.. probably more at B&N ... and that's not counting the 4th book I bought for my cousin. I recommend people to try their locations out. I really wanted to give them 1 star, but it would only be 1 star because of the buying books. My two trips to the store were because my mom had a stroke and had to be placed into a rehabilitation/nursing home, and all her books would not be able to fit into her room. I took the books and some cds, which some were from Half Price Books, to get money back to put the money on some of her bills and they gave me $30. I really like this bookstore! The staff has always been friendly and kind to me. This story carries a wide array of both new and gently used books, as well as DVDs, children's books, journals, games, toys, and other knick knacks. I've sold here many times and my advice is to not expect to get a ton of money for your books. I'm happy with whatever I receive. They regularly have coupons so get on their email list to be informed of when they occur. Sometimes they have a coupon for 50% off on Sundays. Come ready to browse; there's so much to see! I will never spend another cent at this bookstore. When attempting to make a purchase, the person at the register denied renewal of my educator discount card. I offered my Drivers License and a school business card. I offered to show my work email. I offered to open the School website to confirm I was an employee. Denied. I was humiliated as the implication was that I was some sort of criminal posing as a teacher to take advantage of a discount. I left without buying anything. I called and spoke to an assistant manager who perpetuated the same ridiculous stance, calling it store policy. To add insult to injury, in a bubbly voice, the store manager explained how anyone could go to a school and obtain a teacher business card with their name on it. These people suck. read more

Great selection and prices (seriously, there's other used book stores that would charge 50% or more above what HPB does) and the staff is similar to those at a good record store in that they know their stuff. With Borders going out of business in the last year and B&N a bit on the expensive side (not to mention not as many as Borders) I'm always looking for a place to find decent books. Also helps when you can find it at a decently discounted price. I've only been to this and the Countryside locations and I always find at least one thing to buy. Both the last time and this time, I brought some books to sell...no I didn't get a lot of $$ for them, but the fact is I got rid of them as I could not find another place to sell them. Their selection is decent for books not to mention their wide variety of music, TV/Movie DVDs/VCR tapes, and computer software. And it seems like I am always finding offbeat books here that I never thought of buying. They also have a section of reduced priced books ($1-$3 which is a bonus. All in all a great place to go if you are not looking for a specific book but have something in mind to get. read more

A lot of the books here are not exactly half priced, but it beats paying full price. They do have a wide selection of everything and you might be able to find some rare things here like comics, you'll just have to spend time going through everything. If you're trying to sell your books here, good luck or don't bother. I once witnessed a man bring in 4 boxes full of books and left with $5 for all of it. He was pissed and took the $5 because he didn't want to load 4 boxes back into his car. They will only give you a good deal if the books are more recent or a best seller. read more

I made my first trip to HPB today. Interesting place! As my daughter sold a number of books she no longer needs (some textbooks and novels from high school and college) I signed up for an educator discount card and strolled around. This really isn't the kind of place you go seeking a particular title, but it IS the place you go to frequently, taking your open mind with you. I teach 7th grade English and I did see many Young Adult books that I will add to my classroom library for around $ 4.49 each. Since these additions come out of my pocket, HPB will help me get more for my money. In addition, HPB gave my daughter $37 for books she no longer needs. read more

This is my second time in this store. A man named Ben treated me terribly as well as the family before me. He acted like I was wasting his time when I had plans of spending several hundred dollars as they have great pricing on some things I wanted to stock up on. After his terrible attitude and customer service I left with only what I had in my hands. I would appreciate someone coaching him because his behavior was unacceptable and quite frankly embarrassing to your establishment. Especially because I would have given 5 stars for the sweet girl behind the counter who went out of her way to pull even extra items for me to just look at. There are two points to this review. One is to discuss how they'll scam you when you try to sell your books/DVDs to them. The last is a review of their customer service, or lack there-of. I brought a box of hardcover books in, with various manga titles that I no longer had an interest in & were taking up space on my bookshelves. I sold them to Half-Price Book in April 2011. They offered me about $40 for the entire lot. When I inquired as to which books/manga got what price, the smug bastard at the counter informed me that the manga I was trying to sell were not fetching any money, but that removing them from my "offer" would decrease what I would be getting for everything else. The next week, my manga are on sale for the average price on their shelves. This was akin to spitting on my face. Their customer service, or lack there-of, makes you want to walk out the store. There are plenty of employees in the store, and the idea that they can't get out of the counter to stop talking to their co-workers to help me find an author, is appalling to me. This isn't a small used book store, okay? This is a chain of book stores, and the company behind them should invest in some customer service seminars for it's employees, as when I inquired whether or not they could offer of a discount for purchasing the entire collection of a slow moving item(Which has been sitting on the shelves since I first walked in the store so many months ago), the(I'm not gonna mince words) asshole smugly told that the price was listed on the cover. Okay, you don't want to offer a measly 5-10% off? Okay, I'm fine with that! But when you sneer at me and talk to me like I'm some sort of dog in your eyes, there is a problem with that. One thing is politely telling me you can't offer a discount. Another is talking down to me as though I am some sort of moron by rudely saying, "The PRICE is listed on the COVER". The people, or at least the jerks I've encountered, are charm school dropouts. Considering how they rip people off when they buy these books off them, it horrifies me that they also treat the customers buying from them like trash. I don't want to go to a store in which I am going to be treated poorly. That's all there is to it. If you are familiar with the concept of a slum lord, think of that when you consider going into Half-Price books. If you want to grovel to them for the honor of walking into their store, in which they do not offer a fair price, or at times, any price at all, for books people are selling to this store, and be abused when you question them, then go right ahead inside. I'm not a stranger to retail jobs, and these guys have no excuse. Don't pity them. You see a customer giving them a hard time? Go right ahead and ignore it. They want to be a respectable business in Orland Park? Then ACT RESPECTABLY. I am NOT returning to this store. read more

I was motivated to come here by my daughter doing it first. It was NYE day, a good time to clear out some clutter. We put all the bags of old clothes, etc. in the back of the car and the books in the front. Stopped by Goodwill and the back was empty. Drove up here and gave them our box of books. While they were appraising it we looked around at the books. There were good deals here but I didn't let myself buy anything, I had just gotten a stack of books for Christmas. Our name was called and they offered us 25.00 for our books. Deal! In less than an hour we had decluttered and made 25.00. Happy New Year's Eve to us! read more

This was my first time visiting half price books and I had a great experience. I am a teacher and I reached out to them for donations for my third grade classroom. They were more than happy to help out and so kind about it. When I arrived they had two big boxes for my kiddos! I was super excited, as were my students when they got to see all the new books! After I received my donation I went ahead and browsed the store. Everyone was very helpful, books were very organized and prices were reasonable. There was even a huge section of books for only $1! Here's my review of the Orland Half Price Books. I think I've been to most of their stores in the area. The experience is pretty similar from store to store. Whenever I visit a store its seems to be moderately crowded, so its great to seek a brick and mortar book seller prospering. I usually don't have a specific book in mind when I visit one of their stores. I spend some time browsing around and usually walk out with at least one item. This store seemed to do a brisk business in used items because there was a line of people bringing in books of books and DVDs. So this is one is one of these place that you should allow some time to visit because it is easy to become engrossed and realize two hours later what time it is. read more

This is a review of the vinyl selection at this Half Price Books (HPB) only... Like many of the other area HPBs locations I've reviewed, this HPB has a fairly nice collection of records in terms of genre diversity--one will find a decent selection of classical and jazz and a nice big selection of pop and rock records, along with a iittle bit of country, some blues, and a bit of soundtrack and world, as well. Like the Bloomingdale or Countryside HPB, the clearance bin is a great place to find records, and often, the quality if just as good if not better than the stuff available up top. Of course, the big advantage is the prices are clearance--usually 1.00 in the bins at this location (so more like Bloomingdale than Countryside in this case). As with all the other HPB locations, the quality of the records can sometimes vary quite a bit, so it's always best to check condition before buying. Pricing on the records at this location is more like Bloomingdale or Countryside, rather than Naperville or Schaumberg, which means the records are usually priced pretty reasonably. This is not always the case, however, on more "collectable" records, sometimes the price can be higher than the condition warrants, so buyer beware on that aspect of the pricing. Overall, though, this is less of a problem than the Naperville HPB, which stands out from others for being problematic on prices. No complaints. I can say that a lot of the previous reviews just seem whiny. No one is forcing you to sell your books and with a thrift store like system you can't expect them to have every book you need every time. [& I think the hipster music should be expected] Give em a break. The staff is friendly and they always seem to have something I'm interested in reading. 2 thumbs up! =] read more
