On the drive back from Montpelier to Portland, following the pilgrimage made by many a New Englander to witness solar eclipse totality, I had to get off the road, out of traffic, and find a restroom stat. It was divine intervention that made me pull off that specific exit. It seemed dead amongst the nearby businesses in that little enclave, but a hint of human activity pulled me towards Vermont Spirits. After my coy request and use of the restroom (what a relief!), I stood at the bar and asked about their line of products. Barkeep Meg was nice enough to allow me to sample some of their offerings, including the super secret juice! Also really appreciated being able to talk with the chief, Randy, and exchange eclipse experiences. Really friendly folks, and it truly kept my sanity in check. Parking seemed plentiful as well. The beer was solid, as I had remembered. We were short on time and my liver was short on remaining capacity, but it was great to be back and see the growth. The venue has such a great small, friendly feel to it, the staff were very friendly both visits, and this time they had live music as well. Stop by and try a pint - they have several styles to choose from, including a great NEIPA and bottle saison that I took to go.

The two waiter persons we had were absolutely amazing And then there was the ambiance. Some of the best I've seen on a microbrew. We'll be back in a month or so. They will have their selections on tap and there is nothing more scenic than an active flight line.

They provide you with a list of what type of apple is on each tree, and what type of apple it was grafted with (usually a Cortland or a Macintosh). Had some really esoteric apples, and we came home with a great variety. There is also a half mile marked trail through the orchards and woods surrounding the property, which we also did. Highly recommend! Their store has a great variety of autumn vegetables (pumpkins, gourds, squash, etc.) and mums. I wish I had gotten the name of the woman who was helping us at the tasting counter, because she was phenomenal. I learned so much about cider, and her customer service went above and beyond. No frills, but very family/dog friendly. Was a wonderful experience and created a lasting memory on our anniversary weekend.

Apples, apples, and more apples--a great range of varieties, from those you can find in your…read moresupermarket to really esoteric varieties. Best of all -- if you haven't had real cider (fermented apple juice, not the sweet juice that's often, and erroneously, called "cider"), you owe it to yourself to taste Farnum Hill ciders. They range from dry to semi-sweet, with a few single-variety ciders (which are fairly rare: most cider is a blend of juice from different apples). And they're made from real cider apples -- Farnum Hill may have the best collection of cider apple trees in the Northeast. Not that my local prejudice is showing or anything. In case you're wondering, Farnum Hill ciders are very highly regarded, some of the finest cider produced in America. You can find them in fancy stores in Manhattan, on restaurant menus, and at cider bars (like Wassail in NYC). But it's way cooler to taste them -- and buy them -- right on the farm. I'm a local, so I can zip over on Thursday nights when growler fills are less expensive. A real treasure!

Now, Matt Lombard, Mangalitsa's owner, has opened Decant, located right next door to the restaurant, to showcase food-friendly wines from notable producers and small vineyards from around the world. Unlike other places in Woodstock, Decant is strictly a wine shop: no beer, cider, or hard liquor in sight. Also, it isn't the place to go to find a huge selection of blow-your-socks-off California cab or Australian Shiraz. Instead, on its shelves, you'll find wines chosen because they exhibit a sense of place (terroir!), are produced by growers who care for their land, and vintners who produce wines based on traditional techniques. The wines at Decant are carefully chosen by Lombard and Keven Ring. You quickly realize that this is a passion project for both, driven by their love of food and wine. Ring is an experienced sommelier, who worked at Simon Pearce and Twin Farms for years and is an engaged (!) oenophile. His experience in pairing wine and food is helpful if you need a couple of bottles for a special dinner or, if you're a wine geek, you'll find his encyclopedic knowledge of wine absorbing. Once the store is fully up and running, they'll offer tastings and events, a wine club, and other wine-related experiences.

Think of this not as a winery as you would in the California style. It's a liqueur tasting that enhances the finer agriculture of Vermont. Ginger liqueur is wonderful- sweet with strong flavors and I already knew it would make wonderful mixed drinks. The chocolate liqueur was delicious as was the apple maple wine. All sweet so go with the perspective of how to enrich a wine based cocktail or a champagne cocktail. If you're a dessert wine lover it's definitely for you. We ended up buying ginger and apple maple. We will be ordering their cranberry wine two months from due to how lovely the experience and the taste was.
