Selection of liquors for tastings at Mad River Taste Place
    Dave A.

Interesting little place. Not quite a deli, not quite a restaurant. "Taste Place" is a good description, because you can get a good little taste of various things here. I was there for lunch (after discovering another restaurant closed earlier than their posted hours), with my wife, her brother, and his wife. I got a tasting of the wares of the Mad River Distillers (good stuff!). The four of us shared two Plowman's Lunches, getting tastes of a wide variety of the cheeses that seem to be the place's mainstays (most of which I liked; as for the rest, remember, not everybody likes every variety of cheese), plus of course all the other stuff in the lunches. They were also quite generous with additional bread slices when needed to go with the cheese. If you're in the area and curious about the local cheeses or liquors, or just want some cheese (be it for a quick snack now or to have on hand for later), definitely check it out!

My husband and I booked a room (non refundable) as soon as we got off the phone with Amy. She text me the next day saying that she looked it up that night and my gift certificate had expired. I checked everywhere for an expiration date and there was none. She then blamed it on whoever printed the g.c. She did try to give us a few dollars off but honestly we were only going because it was free and it sounded cool as both my husband and I have been around gardens and farms all our lives. This was about a five hour trip for us. Thank goodness we found other things to do and we didn't have to forfeit our room as well! In the future, I would suggest that the expiration date be clearly PRINTED out on her so called gift certificate. Can't post without leaving a star so that's the only reason it's there.

Love it here. Free…read morecompletely free - no admission fee, no parking fee. Very friendly people. Small business vibes. Follow your maps and once you cross the bridge they have tons of signs to direct you, hard to get lost. Trust they're hours, we showed up in the pouring rain and they're still open 9am-5pm weekdays. As soon as you walk in you'll get free samples. We sampled 5 cheeses and 2 grades of maple syrup - it sells itself. One cheese is made with unpasteurized milk - others include sharp cheddar, sage, smoked. Convinced me to try traveling home with cheese for the first time. Tons of products available for sell including from other farms as well. I recommend picking up some of the Red Kite Candy caramels they have there. If you liked it as much as me their factory is about a 30 min drive away. Other activities include petting animals (not in winter), walking trail, and self guided tour of their maple house. Wasn't able to do the trail in the rain but I would estimate you can do all of this in 2 hours. Not at all like Billings Farm if you're concerned about going to both or only have time for one. Billings has an admission fee, no samples of milk or cheese though the make both. More of a museum but they do have up close interactions with their cows (even in winter) for the kids, butter churning, candle dipping. Recommend Billing for taking kids on homesteading field trip, Sugarbush a quick stop for foodie/charcuterie person IMPORTANT: They do NOT sell sugarbush products at any of the stores in Woodstock so don't plan to buy more later and have regrets like us - we looked in every store and couldn't find it. Not sure about Quechee though. Products can also be ordered online and shipped

Weather got a little hariy getting there with the slushy roads, but we made it! It's pretty remote location with no street lights, so if driving in the dark look for the signs to get there and trust your GPS. There's a large parking lot across from the entrance to the little store/shop. The shop is actually the owners old family home I belive. We arrived pretty much at closing time, but we were still welcomed warmly. We got a cheese & maple syrup tasting which was yum and informative, and the staff member that did it was really nice, I forgot her name, but see photo below. One of the cheeses has won a cheese competition, very cool. We also got to meet the owner, but she was busy getting Christmas orders together. I perused all of the cheeses I wanted and settled on 4. We got to try 2 out of the 4 from the cheese sampling. The nice lady that checked me out even gave me some nice to-go samples as well. The smoked cheese was my fav, and the sage. But I enjoyed them all. I was able to easily fly home to TX with them due to the cold weather of the season. After the tasting, we got to peruse the store. They have so much other stuff to buy in additon to cheese and maple, tons of knick-knacks and gifts and merch. We didn't get to explore the farm after since it was pitch black when we left, too bad. Enjoy!

I actually drove an hour out of my way just to get this maple creemee -- I had visited a few years ago and had been dreaming about it ever since. Thankfully, it did not disappoint. The maple creemee was incredible -- unbelievably delicious, rich, and perfectly creamy with an authentic maple flavor that completely lives up to the hype. Easily one of the best maple treats you'll find anywhere. The maple syrup tasting was both informative and fun. The staff did a fantastic job explaining the different syrup grades and flavor profiles, and it was fascinating to taste how much they vary. Everything felt fresh, high-quality, and clearly made with care. The grounds themselves are beautiful, especially in winter. With a deep blanket of snow covering the landscape, the farm felt peaceful, scenic, and exactly what you hope for when visiting Vermont in February. If you're anywhere near Montpelier or Barre, Morse Farm Maple Sugarworks is absolutely worth the stop -- for the experience, the views, and one unforgettable maple creemee.

Bought some of their delicious maple syrup, a couple regular bottles and a verity pack. We got a couple creamees nice on a humid day. Went out and about and watched an educational video on how they get the sap from the trees. There is some equipment in that same area which is cool to see. It's Very rustic surroundings, you can tell this is where hard work is done. We walked on the trail to see how the hoses run down from the trees to the barn gathering the sap from the trees. Wishing them nothing but the best with their up coming season for their business.

So, I settled for the best alternatives I could find, based on past experience and their current prices. But I really wanted something to satisfy a taste craving. And today, I found this popcorn. 'Cabot Creamery Seriously Sharp Cheddar Cheese Popcorn'. This packs amazingly strong cheedar flavor into popcorn. If you gave this to someone who's had Smartfood, or Wise White Cheddar, and asked them to compare them (I[ve had both of those) , it'd be a mind blowing experience for them. It's like the first time a Canada Dry ginger ale drinker tastes Schweppes for the first time. Or even better, a good ginger beer instead of ginger ale. It's just that muuch more real cheddar flvor. And BJ's sells a 15 oz. bag for 8 bucks, compared to the 4.5 oz. bags for around $4-$5 that other retailers carry for this brand, so it's a great value on price and quality. I'm not saying join Bjs to get it, but I am saying if you're a BJs member, this is popcorn you should try. If this popcorn had come out in 1985, Crocodile Dundee would have been the perfect spokesperson for it. "That's not popcorn. THIS is popcorn."
