We got our kitten here. What a clean and well kept facility. (No bad odors) The animals were all well cared for and the workers are very helpful. When you go to visit the dog area they give you dog treats to feed the dogs. The dogs are all friendly and excited to engage & you could see their personalities. The dogs were not fearful or anxious like at some other rescues. I was very impressed by both cleanliness, the caring staff & how awesome they treated the animals. They had some great pets to choose from I highly recommend you go for a visit. read more

My roommate decided that he wanted to adopt a dog. The first time they tried to hide a bite record, which included a fatal duck attack. He found out at the last minute, right before he was about to sign. The next time I went with him and brought my dog, who is a working dog. The first dog they brought out mounted my dog, and they pulled him away. We then asked who they recommended, and they enthusiastically suggested another dog. The dogs got along at first. But we are college students, and they told us this dog was potty-trained and would be a great dog for our small townhouse. This dog turned out not to be potty trained and ruined our house no matter what we tried. He also started getting more aggressive with my dog until he bit my dog around the throat. I left for winter break at this point. My roommate then started trying to surrender him, and they made it super hard and did not believe him about the bite. They kept putting him off, saying they did not have time for a surrender appointment. When he finally brought him in, they had another dog in the lobby, and he got aggressive with that dog as well. A couple of days later, they called and said they put him down. This was not the ending we wanted. The dog was sweet hee just needed a different living scenario and some training. I work at a shelter myself back home, and Halifax disgusts me. read more

It is technically listed as a shelter. It is usually clean. The staff, however, are lacking. They are not warm to people. A humane society is supposed to be there for people who need help and should not be judged. These people are very judgy. And they do not background check. We tested the waters by having a "friend" go apply for a dog. Any dog. He picked one that was not leash trained or had any basic obedience skills whatsoever. He informed them that he was a felon, lived on a boat, and would be gone most of the day. They were ready to let this dog go with him that day. Personally, I would have thrown his application right out the door, but not this place. He left without the dog saying he needed a day to think and they called him the next day asking if he was ready to make the commitment! I don't know what kind of screening they do, but it's not much. This place quickly reminded me of other places I've seen that are a turn for profit place. They get all these donations and HEAVILY push people to adopt dogs that I, as a behavioral analyst, should NOT be adopted out, but they fit a narrative of misunderstood and came from a bad life. If you call and tell them there is an emergency and you have to surrender your beloved pet and want to do the right thing, they will make you feel like tbe worst people on the planet - like you just got up one day and decided you didn't like your pet. No, things DO happen and where is a judge-free place to go to for help? Not here. Without knowing you or your situation, they will berate you and say things like "mm I see." I'm not sure what is humane about this place, but it's not the way they push dogs on people who shouldn't be in homes and it's certainly not in the way they treat people. They do NOT give health records for their animals, either. They should call it what it is: a for profit pit rescue. read more

There is an extension for the Halifax Humane Society at the Volusia Mall on International Speedway Blvd. This new adoption center is focusing on dogs to find there forever homes. The Grand Opening was today and most of the majority of the dogs find a home. What a wonderful way to kick off a great idea. The adoption center is open daily from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. I got a 2 month old kitten and she is really wonderful. I've had her for about 2 weeks now and she's come down with an upper respiratory infection:( I did adopt her during the pan leukemia outbreak there and she and the other cats were under quarantine . My kitty tested negative twice for it. I am currently in the foster program with her because they recommend I quarantine her at home instead of there. But I've had a pleasant experience with the vet staff so far and they've been treating her well! I just pray for a speedy recovery for my kitten read more

Horrible. Can't surrender sick animals here when owners have no financial means of getting to a vet.

I fostered a kitten before its adoption, and she was sick. She has eye discharge and I mentioned the problem when I get her and they ignored the issue. When it was time for adoption, I brought it to their attention and was told "it is not a major issue". The kitten had gotten my OTHER older cat sick as well, so when I went BACK they said it was now MY problem for THEM giving ME a SICK CAT! Worse service and no respect. I had to give the kitten back for my household sake and they were fuming about it. Did not get FULL money back but that was not even an issue. read more

I just wrote a lengthy complaint to the better business bureau about their not supplying health documents for adopted pets. I have no idea what they did as far as shots and had to pay a vet for shots that the cats may have already been given. Now I'm trying to get the documents so I don't have to get the second round of shots if they already had the first and second round of shots. So far their lack of answering messages, even from my vet, has cost me $415.00 for shots and deworming that may have already been done. Next I will have to pay $120.00 rabies shots that they may have already had. All I have been asking for is the documentation but they refuse to answer. Legally, if they did rabies shots they are supposed to give a certificate and tag. NOTHING! It is cruelty to make these cats go through more shots if they already have had them. Why don't they answer people? I paid for the services that they promised and I have no proof that they did them. I also gave an additional 100.00 donation. Shouldn't they have had the documents ready to give to me when I picked up the kittens? There seems to be no communication between staff and the front desk. Nice people, most of them but some serious incompetence. I advise anyone to look at the BBB site before adopting. Still adopt but don't leave that place without complete satisfaction. manager also never returned my call. They didn't even answer my vet when she tried to find out what had already been done. On 9/24/2018 I purchased a cat from Halifax. They charged me 10 times the advertised price for a cat $50 instead of $5 as printed in the 9/21/2018 issue of Penny Saver. I brought this to their attention and showed them the ad for $5.00 cats on 9/26/2018. They reluctantly issued me a $45 refund but as of 12/4/2018 (a week later), I still have not seen the $45 credit on my online credit card transaction list. Also the cat they sold me was sick and cost me over $433 in veterinary bills within 72 hours of acquiring the cat. They refused to reimburse me or help me with the bill in any way. The guy we talked to about this on 12/4/2018 was extremely rude and would barely let us get a word in edgewise. He also refused to help with the vet bill. read more

Do not go here! My mother adopted a dog at this facility and is now declining . The dog has bitten upwards of 2 persons as well as my mother. when she made an appt they told her it would cost her to have him euthanized. I cam to Florida to help her as she is not well. she missed her appt. however when I called the Manager was not nice at all and basically told me it is our problem. they are over capacity and cannot take or euthanize the animal. I have adopted several animals from this location. I have also dropped off donations here several times. The facilities could use a face lift but they use the money of the animals not the facade. My daughter volunteered here for a few summers and I was always impressed with the care the animals received. You can dope off food, bedding and equipment at this location. My son's Boy scout troup even started the publix drop dox for food that you see at Publix entrances. I have been told that they would rather get the cash directly so that they can keep the diet consistent for the animals instead of whatever is dropped off. There is also a thrift shop at a different location but I have never been. read more

So they sent me home with a sick, unaltered female dog, and told me that I had to come back to have her spayed once she recovered from a respiratory infection. They said she is 4 years old, and there's no way she's more than a year and a half. She's a sweet dog, but isn't house trained and has trouble eating because she had a broken jaw that didn't heal properly. I am still planning on keeping the dog, I can train her and buy special food for her. But when I called to set up her spay, they told me that they only do them on Tuesday and refused to even delay it one week for me to have a day off to do it. It's either I take off work to drive all the way out there or they won't do it. Remember, they are the ones who delayed it to begin with. I've adopted two dogs from them, but I'll never adopt from them again. There is absolutely no reason why they can't delay the appointment one more week so that I don't have to use a personal day. There are plenty of rescues to adopt from. Halifax has lost my support for good. read more

Do not go here. They do not care about the animals and try to put more animals into their place than they have room for. Additionally, while a lot of the staff is great, the way management treats the staff and talks to them is unacceptable. Particularly the manager Lisa who just reeks of incompetence, but deflects by treating the floor staff like garbage to try to make up for her own insufficiencies. If a company is okay with someone who can't do her own job treating the rest of the staff like idiots and shoving animals into insufficient areas when they are supposed to be an animal shelter, they shouldn't be operating. read more

I went with my two little boys to adopt a cat. We fell in love with this grey kitten. I go to fill out paperwork, waited like 40 minutes in the lobby for someone to even look at me. I had a take a number and was still accused of butting in line. So I give my paperwork to this rude girl who proceeds to tell me that there is a hold on that kitten. I said well, there are no hold papers on the cage, "well, there is!". I'm not even going to get into the bs story she told. I go back the next day to find all of the kittens were sent to Petsmart. Phone calls were made, damage control attempted, my baby was adopted at the Petsmart event. I have kids crying at home, name picked out, and I am furious! BTW, ironically all of the super cute kittens and cats coincidentally have hold papers on them. The website clearly states that you have to come on to adopt, why all of the holds then. They're loss because I was going to donate $125 and a trunk full of old towels when I adopted. I'm going to drive down to Brevard County tomorrow to see if they are more people friendly. read more

Due to circumstances beyond our control we had to surrender our dog. I went in to talk to someone and had the pleasure of chatting with Scott. I let him know my situation, and after talking for a bit and getting to know my situation we agreed that it would be best for my dog if we scheduled time to return so they could set up a spot for her where she wouldn't be immediately put in the kennel environment. He really wanted what was best for my dog and that was so wonderful. When I came back to drop her off the staff was so compassionate and gentle and assured me she would be good hands. I got a cat which they suggested. They told me he was getting over a cold and should be fine. When I took him to the free vet visit I was told my cat is extremely sick and will cost me lots. He possibly has cancer and he has a bad respiratory infection. I'm a college student although I knew I would have to pay for vet visits and medicine I didn't expect to do so right away. I went back to see what they could but all they suggested is I bring him back. I am already in love with my cat. He sleeps with me every night. I'm trying my best to support him but I don't know if it's enough. I see another review with the same issue. Shelters are suppose to be the best place to get a pet. This place does not have the same appeal as Arni, which is another shelter in the city. The cats are in cages and you can't play with them like at Arni. The dogs are also behind glass. There's just some thing old and dirty and depressing about the place whereas Arni is cleaner and newer. read more

Very rude staff woman. Wouldn't let us walk a dog because it was "busy" when maybe one other person was there. It wasn't on the behavior team, the dog was perfectly fine to walk. Most of the staff there are nice but she's an exception. A lot of the dogs there have diseases they won't tell you about as well so make sure to take them to the vet after bringing them home as well... :/ read more

This place needs to be shut down. All the animals need to be rescued and to be treated properly. I adopted a kitten that was 2 months old and they stated the kitten was healthy and ready to come home. She came home, wouldn't eat, wouldn't drink so I hurried up and went to the vet. Turns out the kitten was extremely unhealthy and she has an infection. So I got her on antibiotics and all of that. I called the animal shelter and they told us to bring her but only said she had a cold and that she should be getting over it soon. The vet stated I needed to feed her 3 times a day and her antibiotics twice a day(which I did) Well a day goes by and she's taking her antibiotics and she passed away. read more

Wish I could leave a zero. Tax dollars wasted, the workers are rude. They try to make it impossible to turn in a stray kitten. First off we called after hours about a stray kitten. They said call the next morning so we did. The next morning (Friday), they said it would be the following Wednesday before they could pick it up. They said alternatively take it to Halifax Humane Society myself, i did. My wife drove me so I didn't have my license with me, after giving me several run arounds the guy finds out I don't have my license with me and says he won't take the kitten. I go back to my car and my wife takes the kitten in with her license in hand. The employee then told her to fill out the paper and "they" would be there momentarily. After waiting several minutes she asked Kevin when "they" would be there. He again said momentarily. She said what does that mean. "It means whenever they come." My wife started taking the kitten out of our container and Kevin then decided to put it in theirs. My family and I are animal lovers but please find other ways to help with the animals because this place is another example of government waste, with rude uncaring employees just wanting a paycheck. read more

Don't lose your animal and expect to just pick it up and leave. $66 for the first day, $21 each day after that. My cat was turned in late on a Wednesday afternoon. They called me around 5pm. I came the next afternoon at 3:30 and was told it would cost $87 to redeem my cat. Less than 24 hours there? That's not even ONE day. Even if you fed her filet mignon, you still charged too much. This has to be one of the most awful customer service organization I have seen ever. So we're here to look at a dog. We didn't find anything, but as we're leaving a father and his daughter were trying to surrender their lab. Seemed pretty straight forward. The dog liked us and we like the dog. The daughter sufferers from depression and though loved the dog they could not take care of it like they wanted to. Keep in mind they had not been approved to return the dog as they were waiting outside. We agreed to take the dog and everyone was happy, except Samantha Bradford who represented herself as the manager. She was offended by everything everyone said, insisted she was the smartest one in the group while she lacked the professional courtesy and the ability to keep with the purpose of the business she manages. She continue to interrupt both us and the owners of the dog. Her opinion was more important than the happiness and wellbeing of the animal or the daughter that suffered from anxiety. She's incapable of making a simple decision, and she's in charge. I feel for the animals and employees of the immature adolescent that somehow, probably by default found herself in management. In the end , the dog is now going into a cage , the previous owners are crying and we are angery. Great Job Samatha. I have adopted 4 dogs from this location. A black lab, chihuahua, and two beagle mixes. I would definetely recommend this place to people looking to add another member to their family. Their new dog park is awesome and the staff is always friendly and honest about any issues the animals may have. I come to visit and play with the animals fairly often and they are always clean and the animals are well taken care of, those who are sick are always on the proper medications and checked on. Overall the animals are well taken care of and loved by the staff. Great place to find your new best friend! read more

First of all went I went there to adopt I was told they do not kill animals unless medically the animal is just too far gone or if the dog is extremely vicious and cant be re-homed.Well I had to return a dog today that I got from them... It broke my heart.. When I returned her I was ask " can I help you" .. I said" they told me to bring her over here and surrender her" the girl says" why?!" So I say because she attacked me today, I couldn't get her off me" so then she says" its $150 to hold her in bite quarantine. ".. I said "$150? I bought her here"She says "oh"....(this is all with an attitude). Then she says to the other girl" Are they doing euthanasia today"....... I was shocked to say the least. It was a direct passive aggressive comment directed towards me to get a reaction.She got one. I spent over $500 on her and her stuff so I could give her everything she would need and want.....a dog that they said was passive and oh so mellow and passed all their tests only to find out this dog was not mellow or passive .But that in NO WAY means that she wouldn't do wonderful with a man and a much more active house. Which I had told the lady on the phone.. This poor thing has severe separation anxiety, nightmares, and yes she scared me when she wouldn't stop trying to bite .. But I do NOT think she needs put down.. I just think she needs a home that allows her more space and freedom. I am out a lot of time and money and that isn't what even upsets me... It is having some little loud mouth with an attitude make sure I knew they were going to kill her. My dog got loose a few weeks ago and was missing for 3 days. On the 2nd day, I called HHS and was put on hold after the gentleman told me he would help me try to find my dog. We then got disconnected. I called back and left 3 voice messages for the "lost and found" department and have yet to receive a call back. I was also there about a year or so ago, to see is my missing cat might have turned up there. I waited at the counter while 3 employees, who were very busy on their computers, ignored me for about 10 minutes. I understand how busy they are, I get it....but just a nod, a smile, a pointed finger to let me know they saw me and would be with me shortly was all I wanted. So after about 15 minutes, I looked around and said, "Hello, is there somebody that can help me?" Finally, someone looked up. We're all busy, but a little kindness goes a long way and I'm not feeling it from HHS, sorry. read more

((Read the whole story, update at the end )) I went with the family to Halifax Humane Society and was So disappointed when we went back with cat carrier in hand, later in the same day, to get a cute Orange Tabby named Gary. That we came back with a cat carrier today same day we were told that he is available today, and they close at 6:00pm but apparently that means if you walk out the door you're SOL. So there I am with my kid in tears. Also we placed a second hold on two other animals one other cat and a puppy, hopefully they will become available, the cat by Saturday and the puppy by the 12th. I question the girl this time to get the full information and I will be notified and have 24 hours to respond, I hope there are no other surprises with the others. It would have been nice and professional to told exactly what would happen if we left and came back, especially with such hopeful expectations. So fast forward to the next day, Halifax called us from my discussion with them the previous day, and said that Gary was brought back to the shelter and was available for us and would hold him till we were able to get there.
