They are taken care of, categorized, and preserved well. They receive general support from many sources for the management and sharing of our local history. They are digitized and the entire photo collection should be online for viewing in some fashion or another. Instead it was hard to access. A week in advance for a library appt.. and the 9 photos I wanted a copy of are restricted to use only on paper or digital for a fee of $20 each... so $180 I thought and ok'd. I agreed to the fee, willing to have them added to our super busy 20 year website on our islands historic homes...( A site that is free to all listed mansions and and takes no advertising.. all a gift to the thousands who enjoy the site for decades. We pay all fees and hosting for years)... Despite that... was told it would now be $1800 for the 9 photos of interest. Apparently the digital fee is to buy to look at again and not share online. They went on to be more restrictive.. stating that they did not want me putting the order in via email, or fax or even in person, Unless I came back again for another appointment.. and None were available until 2 weeks from my call... all to be sure they were correct. I think I took pretty good notes on the mansion names and photo IDs since that is what I do. Benefactors gave the SCHS an amazing collection of photos... and other items to take care of and promote our Long Island culture.. but sadly they sit in a place few go to and actually see. Trying to make them available was not easily done. So now.. I dub the Suffolk County Historical Society the Suffolk County Hoarder Society. Availably to only a few as the years run out and our locals miss out. Not cool SCHS.

It may be small but it is mighty! However, it is important to note that we had "THE" BEST tour guide - Sandra. Not only was she full of interesting facts & information, she clearly loves what she's doing. I would love to visit again just to hear her share her knowledge and experiences with the wild life here on Long Island. After our tour of the museum, we ventured out to the turtle house and endless trails in the preserve. We saw a baby osprey in the nearby nest as well as quite a few deer as it was dusk. We were the only ones in the museum at the time so the clerk who checked us in gave me son extra attention and showed him different things he could do upstairs. When we went down the touch tank, the person watching over and helping with the touch tank Milo was really awesome. The clerk upstairs was really awesome to but I don't remember her name. He took out a turtle that they have to keep at the nature center for my son to look at as a birthday surprise he was very attentive and nice to my son. We didn't get to hike the trails nearby although when I'm with my son the hiking is kind of limited. I want to come back one day to hike the trails here. We went outside on the deck for awhile which was nice. This is a beautiful and interesting museum worth going to.

Both Planetarium show and Mansion tour are add-ons for an additional charge and subject to availability. Currently, the operating hours for Saturday and Sunday are 11:00 am to 5:00 pm with last admission at 4:30 pm. Summer hours begin Saturday, June 27: Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm with last admission 4:30 pm. When I arrived on Sunday around 11:00 am, there were already a good amount of cars in the parking lot but there is still plenty of spots. We walked over to Planetarium/Admissions and showed our digital pass. The staff were very friendly and gave us a map to show us what we have access to with general admission yellow wristbands. General Admission includes access to the Vanderbilt Mansion (including the Habitat and Stoll Wing animal dioramas, and natural-history and cultural-artifact galleries in the Memorial Wing), The Hall of Fishes marine museum, Planetarium exhibits, and the grounds and gardens. It was really cool to walk around and check out the mansion. The main entrance is a cobble-stone driveway and a bell-tower looms above. This leads you to the central courtyard and I felt transported to a different country. With its ironwork, red tile roof and central courtyard, the mansion's Spanish architectural style stands out. Mr. William Vanderbilt spent over thirty years on scientific expeditions aboard his 250-foot yacht, the Alva, bringing back over 17,000 varieties of marine specimens. The marine and natural history museum is filled with the figurines of underwater creatures. We also met and spoke with the staff inside the mansion. They were very informative and friendly. The Vanderbilt Museum is definitely worth visiting.

I thought everyone lived in these mansions with manicured gardens. Now add rock music and a laser show? Yes, sharks with freakin' laser beams shows! I remember coming here on a date with my girlfriend (now wife) in the 90s and seeing a Pink Floyd laser show. I was a little perturbed because they only played New Pink Floyd. Brah, I wanna rock out to MONEY! My wife, bless her heart, bought us two tickets to see the Van Halen laser show. All these years later, we're back. And trust me, I'm still impressed with the beauty of the property. We walk down the hill to the actual planetarium. There's a couple of stoners on line, if they keep quiet during the performance then no one is gonna have problems. The theater is shaped like a circle, there's no bad seats. The doors close and for an hour, I had Van Halen music crankin'! The actual show, the lasers seem a little dated. I went to The Sphere in Vegas a few months ago, this is old technology. I was informed that next year the museum will also house Gerson's paintings. I thought it was a world class museum and one of the best cultural options in the area. The Collection and gardens are open to the public, free of charge, every summer from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Saturdays and Sundays, from 1 PM to 4 PM.

The amazing thing about this place is it is where Tesla worked and lived, right here on Long Island. The history surrounding this place is really awesome and if you do any kind of research on this brilliant inventor you will find that many things you thought were invented by other's were really ideas and inventions of his. I am so happy that the people working to renovate this historical site are so dedicated and passionate about spreading the word to the public. I hope the next event here is even better than this previous one and it just keeps getting bigger and better. If you live on Long Island and especially around the Shoreham area you really need to get involved and help spread the word about this amazing historical site right in our own back yard!
