In the Visitor's Center, you can see the Lionel Layout, which was moved from Michigan to Riverhead back in 2011 and it is truly something to behold. It is very interactive and there are plenty of buttons for kids (or adults!) to push to make things move or light up. The highlight is the model circus that was handcrafted by a local man. They might not make small talk about something else, but if you have train related questions, they are excellent resources. Admission was ten dollars & included unlimited train rides. Also included was access to old train cars & a large tent containing train sets & some very cool vintage locomotives. I'd forgotten how cool some of the toy trains were. The festival is located adjacent to the LIRR train stop - also got to see a large "real" train pass by. Nice event. Nice staff. Good value. Suffolk County Historical Society located in the heart of Riverhead village is an amazing treasure…read moretrove of historical items and amazing photos. They are taken care of, categorized, and preserved well. They receive general support from many sources for the management and sharing of our local history. They are digitized and the entire photo collection should be online for viewing in some fashion or another. Instead it was hard to access. A week in advance for a library appt.. and the 9 photos I wanted a copy of are restricted to use only on paper or digital for a fee of $20 each... so $180 I thought and ok'd. I agreed to the fee, willing to have them added to our super busy 20 year website on our islands historic homes...( A site that is free to all listed mansions and and takes no advertising.. all a gift to the thousands who enjoy the site for decades. We pay all fees and hosting for years)... Despite that... was told it would now be $1800 for the 9 photos of interest. Apparently the digital fee is to buy to look at again and not share online. They went on to be more restrictive.. stating that they did not want me putting the order in via email, or fax or even in person, Unless I came back again for another appointment.. and None were available until 2 weeks from my call... all to be sure they were correct. I think I took pretty good notes on the mansion names and photo IDs since that is what I do. Benefactors gave the SCHS an amazing collection of photos... and other items to take care of and promote our Long Island culture.. but sadly they sit in a place few go to and actually see. Trying to make them available was not easily done. So now.. I dub the Suffolk County Historical Society the Suffolk County Hoarder Society. Availably to only a few as the years run out and our locals miss out. Not cool SCHS.

It may be small but it is mighty! However, it is important to note that we had "THE" BEST tour guide - Sandra. Not only was she full of interesting facts & information, she clearly loves what she's doing. I would love to visit again just to hear her share her knowledge and experiences with the wild life here on Long Island. After our tour of the museum, we ventured out to the turtle house and endless trails in the preserve. We saw a baby osprey in the nearby nest as well as quite a few deer as it was dusk. We were the only ones in the museum at the time so the clerk who checked us in gave me son extra attention and showed him different things he could do upstairs. When we went down the touch tank, the person watching over and helping with the touch tank Milo was really awesome. The clerk upstairs was really awesome to but I don't remember her name. He took out a turtle that they have to keep at the nature center for my son to look at as a birthday surprise he was very attentive and nice to my son. We didn't get to hike the trails nearby although when I'm with my son the hiking is kind of limited. I want to come back one day to hike the trails here. We went outside on the deck for awhile which was nice. This is a beautiful and interesting museum worth going to.

I visited the mansion for the We May be Right band concert and enjoyed the experience. We brought a cooler with some snacks, drinks along with our beach chairs and it was a very pleasant afternoon. They also have a vending machine selling water and some other items should you need. Every single staff member I dealt with was super friendly and the place is beautiful. It's a good opportunity to take some nice photos. And the "We may be right" Billy Joel tribute band made our experience even more pleasant. I haven't visited the Planetarium or the inside part of the mansion so I can't comment on that.

7/31/26 I haven't been to a laser show since I was a…read moreteenager. Now I'm a senior citizen. I get free tickets through AARP for the first show of the month and this month is The Grateful Dead. As we were guests of the band often (our friend was Brent Midland's assistant) we saw many a concert. My husband was blah about going, but really happy after. It blew my mind - and I don't do drugs. The sound system was amazing. The lasers were surprisingly good, although quite antiquated. My favorites were when you felt you were enveloped in the lasers. I was lost for an hour, in a good way. Luckily, hubby has a handicapped placard and we were able to park steps from the front door. I would have liked to have parked in the regular parking lot and walk, but that's no longer in the cards for us. The grounds are beautiful for as much as we could see in the dark.We would have loved to see the meteor shower, but that was not in the cards either.The show was from 9:30pm to 10:30pm (way past my bedtime) and over an hour away which was a complete bummer. In any case, this was a wonderful event. Join AARP if you're over 50 as the benefits are great.

I was informed that next year the museum will also house Gerson's paintings. I thought it was a world class museum and one of the best cultural options in the area. The Collection and gardens are open to the public, free of charge, every summer from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Saturdays and Sundays, from 1 PM to 4 PM.

The amazing thing about this place is it is where Tesla worked and lived, right here on Long Island. The history surrounding this place is really awesome and if you do any kind of research on this brilliant inventor you will find that many things you thought were invented by other's were really ideas and inventions of his. I am so happy that the people working to renovate this historical site are so dedicated and passionate about spreading the word to the public. I hope the next event here is even better than this previous one and it just keeps getting bigger and better. If you live on Long Island and especially around the Shoreham area you really need to get involved and help spread the word about this amazing historical site right in our own back yard! The two associates at the front were super helpful and patient as well, you had to sign up for a waiting list for the virtual reality and they made sure everybody got a chance. My nephew is autistic and they were really patient with him which I appreciated. The reason for the 4 star review is the fact that it was expensive for three of us and not a lot of exhibits. It was hands one which I loved but the main reason we went there was for the drones and they were broken when we got there. I am hoping to go back when the drones are available but for the price, not sure yet. The kids had a really nice time though.
