Such a hidden gem! I was waiting for some friends whose train was delayed and delayed at Newark Penn, so I decided to kill time getting a coffee at Black Swan Espresso next door. On my way, I passed by Halsey Fabric Shop, and ended up buying 15 yard of fabric and an armful of notions :D Although the fabric selection is small, the prices here are unbeatable. $2.99 for a yard of poly-poplin! $0.80 for a handful of buttons! $2.50 for 3000 yards of thread! I stocked up! The folks that work here are super nice and helpful. They let you wander around and do your thing, they don't hover over you so you feel like you can browse without pressure. Highly recommend if you're ever in Newark! read more

This is exactly the type of place that needs to be supported right now. A throwback to an era where family owned businesses in big cities were the norm and not some kitch oddity that is projecting a vintage feel. The street name says it all. Located conveniently at 10 min walk from Newark Penn station, this place tons of different varieties of fabric which would satisfy everybody's needs. Aside from their great selection of fabrics, their customer serve was very good. The person that cut my fabric did so with great care. After buying a yard and a half of this particular fabric I asked another one of the people behind the counter for directions on getting back onto highway 280 West. I'm one of the small number of people that doesn't have a mobile phone and/or gps. The gentleman behind the counter went out of his way to write down a set of roads to take to get onto 280. He told me that he had been doing that drive for 35 years. The instructions got me there easily. I was only in the store for a total of about seven minutes, but this small in -person experience felt very special to me. read more

Good things come in small packages. The shop is small compared to some of the other fabric stores I have been in, but they pack a lot of amazing in the space they have. There were amazing finds like knit mesh and stretch velvet in a kaleidoscope of colors, wonderfully curated gorgeous ITYs and Ankara. They had denim and plaids, challis, Lycra and so much more. Customer service was great. Scott was patient with our easily excitable group. He was very helpful pointing all there selections, answering our questions about their inventory, and cutting and ringing up our fabric purchases. Back in June, I needed African Fabric to make Kente cloth for a graduation. It was last minute because the fabric store I was originally working with was terrible and didn't come through. The staff here were so helpful and friendly, they went above and beyond to help me make sure I had the exact measurements and amount of fabric needed. They did not rush me and did not allow me to leave the store until I understood the exact directions for how my seamstress needed to cut the fabric in order to make sure there was enough fabric for the scarves. Unfortunately this is the only fabric shop that I know of in this area.their fabric selection is not bad ,the trimming is limited the customer service non existent! In the shop there is a faint sign in the upholstery section that says $9.98 for two yards $7.98 for three or more yards.They tried to charge me $9.98 for 12yds I informed them of the sign,and when I questioned their lack of knowledge of it,was told to leave the fabric if I didn't want it and get out. I was shocked,and would gladly have left the fabric,had I not promised to purchase it for someone. I said I would never return to the shop and they basically said good riddance. There is a huge sign posted $15.00 minimum for credit card purchases, their pricing should be so clear. read more

I love this place. I hadn't been there since high school but now that I am sewing this is my absolute go to for my fabrics.

I tell ya, for a small shop on a one way street, this shop has it all. You need crazy fabric colors for your kids school play? They got it. You need heavy cloth for your husband's work pants, got it. Fleece for the cooler months and your new grandchild' s crib, pick a nursery color - they have it. The staff is in top of their game as well. I've watched the folks run the orders outside for "drive by" customers. During construction parking has been a bit of a challenge. You can now park at an Edison lot and get your ticket voucher from them. Can't say enough about them. They've been there forever and customer service has been passed to this generation as well. read more

Not only do they have a great selection of fabric, they also have some awesome workers there ALWAYS WORKING making sure that every customer is satisfied before leaving the store.. I have been to quit a few fabric stores , but HALSEY FABRICS is my absolute fav. Fabric store starting from the fabric choices on to some of the coolest workers you can ever run by .. It's an okay place to find fabric. Their collection is not extensive, but they do have a decent small variety of most things. I'm from NY and have been to a few fabric shops and this place is on the small size (in comparison to the ones I've seen in NY) so don't expect to see a huge room with walls of fabric. There is basically one main long wall with a variety of solids and some patterned fabrics and the other wall holds trimmings, upholstery and other heavier fabrics. Although the people who work there will grab anything you need and will honestly answer any questions you may have, because the place is small and everyone can see everyone, there is very little customer service. Overall, the prices are great and it is a great place to go if you are in a pinch and need to get something last minute. Also, it is one of the few/if only fabric shops that is in an accessible area. I would definitely go back for my basic fabric needs. read more
