THE best fabric store in the garment district, hands down. It's located on the 9th floor in a massive ~20 floor skyscraper (a bit unusual for a fabric store), but ran by a very nice man. The quality of the fabric is phenomenal, but the real winner is the extremely affordable price. This is by far the cheapest store I've been to in the district. Muslin was ~4 a yard, nice poplins for ~6, etc etc. Honestly, if you're going fabric shopping, go here first, and if you can't find what you're looking for, go to other shops. This is the best price : quality you'll find, all the other stores are downhill from here. The only issue? It's slightly small, and you might not find what you're looking for. This small little fabric shop is located inside one of the massive buildings in the garment district. I went there to buy acrylic felt for a banner I was making. Unfortunately they did not have any of the colors that I needed. I wanted red but they only had it in a navy blue. The owner was super nice. He greeted me the minute I walked through the doors and tried to help me the whole time by suggesting other materials that might suit my needs. This place has every type of fabric, I was there for awhile checking what they had and I bought jersey, cotton, fusible and tule, 13 yards of fabric for $84 total, consider that 6 yards of the cheapest fabric would be $90 in Mood fabrics. If you are looking for affordable fabrics this is your pit stop! It's inside of an office / multi purpose building, tell the doorman you're here for the suite room listed for the fabric shop, make a right turn around the corner and it's the far back room. The owner of the shop is quite friendly and helpful. If you have a vague sense of the fabric you're looking for and not for an exact match this is your best bet. Came here once looking for an exact fabric, pattern, color and they didn't have it. I happened to be looking for black power mesh and they luckily had it! I personally like fabric shopping in person and saves on shipping. Most fabrics here are $4/ yard, there was a pile of nice $3/ yard fabrics which they were trying to get rid of- some very high quality silk embroidery fabrics 10-20/ yard which probably would go for 40+ a yard. I had to buy a piece of fabric to drape over my bookcase/tv stand to hide all the little things I have in there and I found Metro Textile Corp through Yelp - so glad I did :) I was planning to go to Mood Fabrics initially, but thought I would rush over to Metro Textiles after work (Yelp says they close at 5:30; I got there around 5:20, Kashi was helping a lady and I was out of there by 5:50) to see what they had first. I ended up getting two yards of fabric at $5 each yard (total $10) and it was perfect for what I needed! Kashi was very nice and gave me a hug at the end. They have a lot of fabrics to choose from and Kashi is very personable. The studio is located on the 9th floor, once you get off the elevator take two rights and go straight back. read more

First of all, the store is randomly located on the 9th floor, but you don't have to sign in at the lobby or anything, just take the elevator up. Turn right down the hall when you get off the elevator. It is worth your while. Listen, Kashi gives the hard sell. You have to put your game face on and be prepared to turn him down and break his heart just a little bit with every "no." But it is so worth it. The shop is tiny, yet somehow seems to have all the inventory you could ever need. Double knit? Available in every color. Wool coating? Traditional colors or a bright novelty weave, he's got you covered. Special occasion laces and sequins? Yep. Easy-to-sew poly knit prints? Sure, why not. Kashi knows his inventory intimately and will magically produce exactly what you're looking for when you ask for it. The prices are more than fair. Silks are around $12-20/yd, wools vary from $15/yd on up to $40 for an incredible double-faced cashmere. The poly knits are mostly $5 and cottons are also on the cheaper end of the scale. Kashi loves visitors, so if you ask really nice he might knock a couple bucks off the price of the piece you really, really want. I visited this wonderful store back in March to get fabric for a jacket I was planning to make. I arrived about 45 min before closing but managed to find what I wanted, a gray denim fabric and a textured cotton. Both are beautiful fabrics, and my jacket came out wonderful. I believe it was Kashi who helped me. He gave me an extra 2.25 yds of the denim fabric because he noticed a small defect in the piece he originally cut for me. Being a beginner at sewing and clothing construction, I would have never known! I truly appreciate Kashi's honesty! The prices are affordable too especially for a new sewer who wants to experiment. So I am not a fashion student or someone who knows their way around a sewing machine...or the difference between linens or chiffon! I am a bride who was looking for inexpensive table runners for her wedding- and was tired of seeing all the ABSURD price for table runners- that did not look/feel like I wanted. I walked into Metro- and the owner was amazing. I showed him a few pictures of the look I was going for and the different colors and my price range- (price was a big issue as I needed about 60 yards for all the tables) and he showed me a ton of amazing different/fabrics that matched. He was incredibly sweet, helpful and I honestly saved over $200 by going there. I also really liked this store compare to some of the other stores I stopped by (which were really intimidating) in the area- as someone who wasn't as experienced- other stores were a bit overwhelming (especially in type and price) vs Metro, where the owner was really helpful and understood the stress of planning a wedding!!! If you are trying to do any DIY wedding stuff that involves fabric- I would highly recommend visiting Metro! read more

I was kind of anxious to go here because of the Yelp reviews saying that the owner gives a hard sell... I hate feeling pressured when I shop and one of my least favourite things is pushy salespeople. However, he was nice and very helpful, and didn't push anything on me... I thankfully never had to put my "game face" on. I'm really glad I sucked it up and went in because I ended up with some pretty nice cotton voile for only $5/yd. It's hard to find prices like that in the city. The shop is small and stacked from floor to ceiling with bolts of fabric, so I'd recommend having an idea of what you want before going in as it's not really easy to browse. It was also really quiet on a Friday afternoon, especially compared to other stores in the area. I was the only customer in the store, but surprisingly I didn't feel intimidated or like he was watching my every move. Also, the building is not that shady... the entrance with the restaurant (which I heard actually has really good Spanish food) is the freight entrance. I got told off when I tried to take the elevators via that entrance. Two doors down towards 8th Ave is the front entrance, which is a little nicer looking. read more

I work as an assistant buyer for a big retail store on the LWS, and on 12/7 called Metro Textiles to inquire about some fabric for my desk and an older sounding gentleman answered. He was not very friendly and I could tell that he was rushing to get me off of the phone. Definitely a HUGE selection. The shop is a little hidden. There was no sign that I saw downstairs. I ended up having to ask one of the doormen for directions. This place is on the 9th floor! There are no price tags so the owner is free to make up the price. I bought a fabric that he said was a wool but when I got home and burn tested it, it melted so it was a wool blend with synthetics. Not cool. Also became scratchy once I dry cleaned it. Bring a lighter and ask for a swatch, burn test it outside to make sure it's what you want before buying. Also, since there are no price tags, don't forget to bargain! He's very good at selling you more than you need so be careful! read more

Every time I go to NYC I always plan on visiting Kashi at Metro Textiles. In fact, I have flown in for the day twice expressly for the purpose of shopping at his store. What I like best there are his knit fabrics, which he has a large selection of, including many ITY jersey prints, at very reasonable prices. I often see the same knits I have purchased from him for $6-$8/yard on other web sites for $12 or more per yard. He also has a good selection of wovens, including silks and upholstery fabrics. My only wish was that he was open on Saturdays as that would give me a little more flexibility in planning my trips.
