She identified the closest match to a specific Pantone blue color and then found this in several fabric choices. After an initial discussion, she recommended the best fabric for our use. This is my favorite fabric store. The variety and quality: it is so nice to have it all in one place! All the staff are professional, efficient and so attentive. Charles is there every day to ensure every patron gets some TLC and are directed to whatever they need. This past 1.5 years have been tough for the fabric shoppes in the City. Reasonable prices, especially their cotton is pretty cheap compared to many other places. Owner speaks English and Korean. Most staffs there speak Spanish and English. Friendly and really willing to help. Quite a few different options of colours, patterns, and textures. Cash or card are both accepted. Masks are required and a sale person had me use hand sanitizer when she let me in. They display fabric with large swatches on hangers, rather than in bolts like many other stores. It makes it easier to see what they have. They didn't have much in the way of damask upholstery fabric, which is what I was looking for, but the sales person knew EXACTLY where the damask was, and that made my browsing very efficient. Unfortunately, they didn't have anything in the color family I was looking for. I would have been lucky if they had something -- their prices were VERY affordable. Fabric seems to be arranged by fabric type (rather than by color) so for decorating purposes, that makes browsing less efficient than the other way. There actually wasn't a large selection of upholstery fabric though. read more

On the one hand I find this store to have a nice selection. Beautiful old world take me back style store with fabrics and a variety of interesting choices. I am loving their selections, but I am appalled by the fact that this store sells cruel fur and the fur is not only cringe worthy it is stinky and smelly fur. Even my son commented on the gross smell of the fur as we passed it. I would take into consideration the cruelty supporting and the gross smell of the store in the fur section before deciding to shop here. If they sold only regular fabrics and it didn't hurt my nose to shop here I can guarantee you I would run back. read more

I really like this fabric shop. It's very well-organized and huge! They have a great selection of all types of fabric, including pleathers and faux furs. The people that work here are always helpful, even when I would come here as a fashion student. They are also generous with their swatches, which they tag to each bolt. This is the only other store in the Garment District area (37th St to 40th St, bw 7th and 8th Ave) that has prices marked on the fabric. Super useful when you're starting out and don't know how much fabrics should cost. So for your first few projects, stick to the less expensive fabrics (in case you mess up, it won't be so heartbreaking :P). The staff is so nice and helpful. I've never seen such wonderful service! They are well staffed, so you can always find someone to cut a piece for you. They'll put the piece at checkout and give you a swatch so that you can keep shopping without the burden of holding on to the fabric. The store is huge and so organized. They've got really really beautiful fabric. Even cotton prints, they've got a beautiful and fun selection. There are signs above the fabric to designate the fabric type. A touch pricey, but well worth it for a special project. read more

I lived here throughout my years at Parsons. The store is so neat and nicely organized, staffs are always helpful, and swatches are so well-prepared. This is a place to go get novelty and other special fabrics for a specific design in mind. (as there are great assortments of color variations) Some may say a thing or two about the price, but you get what you're paying for. I used student discount, and it helped a bit. read more

i recently walked in to NY Elegant Fabrics on my way to the subway from work. Walked by thousands of times before, loved the Liberty fabrics, crazy prints, beautiful faux-fur and beautiful dreamy fabrics i would love to use in my dream home. I had a chance to get a 1950's Danish teak table set with a need for updated cushions. I came in to the shop, looked around at what was eye-appealing, and brought 3 fabrics i had in mind to the counter. Before this, i was approached by 2 employees asking if i needed help, which was nice, as i had no idea how the fabrics were organized in the store, even with the obvious signage (not sure what i was looking for). The first fabric i was interested in, i found out was a remnant, and limited to 3 or 4 yards in their warehouse. Immediately, they took my information to verify their records of inventory, and i kept looking. I brought up another fabric, beautiful chartreuse sateen, and explained that i wanted to use it for seat cushions. The employee advised that this fabric is beautiful to be worn, but does not have the durability needed for seats, and pleasantly pleased that they didn't try to sell me expensive fabric i would be unhappy with. The third was a faux fur, imagining seat cushions from classic Hollywood, and found the stretch was not right for what i needed, but the choices available if i want to make pillows in this area are endless. I decided to go with my first choice, and one of the owners told me that this fabric was originally double the price, but because of the limited yardage available, was half off. My day was made. Left all my info, and they called me the next day with the exact yardage they have in the warehouse. I called the next day, asking if they could bring to the store, and the lady on the phone remembered my name. Wow, this NEVER happens in NY! I picked up the fabric today, so excited about my adventure into upholstering, and the guy originally helping me asked me if i could share pictures of my project when i was finished ! Will definitely visit this gem for my next project, or for inspiration of what is to come next ! read more

They have a huge selection of fabrics thats just overwhelming. you can get lost in the gorgeous selections of textiles for hours. one of the best things about Elegant Fabrics is that most of the fabrics have pre-cut swatches attached to the roll and available for you. ( free for the first 10, and then 25cents ea.) Not many places have this and its really helpful. they also offer a student discount, so don't forget that student ID! read more

I live in New Jersey, but work in New York. I attend many functions that require me to dress a certain way. I needed a particular fabric and I "HEARD" about New York Elegant Fabrics. I looked them up online, sent them an EMAIL with an attachment of a photo of a similar outfit, but I needed that particular fabric. New York Elegant Fabrics IMMEDITELY responded with 3 fabric choices in that same design. Mind you, they took time to FIND the fabric, UPLOAD it and send it to my email. They also sent swatches in the mail. After seeing the photos in my email and physically holding the swatches, I was SOLD. I really miss the old store on W 40th street. A lot! I loved the "old" feel of that store & all of the fabrics on site to purchase if you wished. The new store is bright & well organized, but due to space constraints, both fabrics I was interested in purchasing were not available. The young man working last Saturday was as kind and lovely as could be, took my information and told me that the fabric would most likely be available Monday. Since so many places take your name and number and say they will call, I wondered how "on top" of my particular issue they would be. I called today, Monday, and the woman who picked up was also very lovely. Yes, they had my information & planned to call me when the fabrics were available, which was exactly what happened! Of course, I would have preferred the fabric to be available on Saturday and yes it is an additional trip, but I am lucky in that I live in Manhattan and this trip is not too far. Overall, I think NY Elegant fabrics handled my disappointment as well as they could and I thank them for that. I ended up walking over to Mood Fabrics, which is a very cool place & has 3 floors of fabrics so it is equally awesome and overwhelming. However Mood does not have the same selection of beautiful raw silks that NY elegant fabrics has nor are their brocade choices as numerous or as interesting. I found some very cool cotton fabric at Mood so the day was a success overall. If I might add one critique for NY Elegant fabrics it would be the following: the samples are squeezed too closely together in many places making it difficult to see what is available. Also, for us smaller stature designers and sewers, the top row of samples is very high and difficult to access. I'm not sure what can be done about either since in NYC, space is always an issue. I'll keep shopping at NY elegant fabrics because they really do have a spectacular selection of fabrics and lovely customer service (Mood did as well!) read more

I visited for the first time today. They had a nice selection of different fabrics. I loved the Liberty of London next to the front door. I was looking for knits. I saw at least 6 different employees while I was in the store. One walked right into me, and expected I step out of her way without even an excuse me. Not one person asked me if I needed help. Not one person said hello to me. When I asked two ladies standing at the cutting counter for help, I was told they "were busy and you will have to wait". They did not have a customer with them. To me it seemed like they were talking to each other. Now I do not need someone to treat me like visiting royalty, but this seemed like inexcusable rudeness. So I left without purchasing anything. On my next trip back to NY I can't say I would be eager to stop here. read more

Holy crap, this place is a warehouse of awesome! They stock everything from your basic muslin to the most opulent haute couture fur. Only in places like this can you find screaming neon pink sequined fabric, a whole aisle dedicated to fishnet, and complex handwoven skeins of mohair, netting, and other magnificent things. Some of these fabrics are so expensive that a swatch alone costs $10. If I were anything more than a very amateur clothing designer I would be in here every week! read more

Although NY Elegant Fabrics can be pricey sometimes depending on what type of fabric you're getting, they're definitely very convenient. The location is easy to find, the the fabrics are organized intuitively so it's easy to seek out what you need quickly. My favorite part is that they hang swatches from tags on the rolls, so you can easy snatch up swatches without having to track down an employee and wait for them cut you a swatch. They have a five swatch policy though, so keep that in mind. Elegant might not be pretty, but it sure gets the job done! read more

I have been to several places in the Garment District (including Mood, and Paron, and some sari fabric places) as well as Chinatown, in search of silk jaquard/charmeuse for my Vietnamese wedding dress (ao dai) , and FINALLY found the perfect fabric today at NY Elegant Fabric. They have some brocades under the counter, but if you're looking for finer fabric, the silk jaquards are in the back of the store, on the right. Don't be misled by the sign outside that says "Home Furnishings", their selection of fabric is HUGE, and everything is well organized by type. Feel free to ask anyone for assistance. They are helpful, especially Angela who was very nice (an Asian lady with glasses). The silk jacquard that I got was $25/yd - a bit over my budget, but it was just so elegant that I decided to go for it. The seamstress that was supposed to make my dress is going to Vietnam for a month and my wedding is in 7 weeks. (No pressure...). Now she says she won't have the time to do it. Sooo, for those of you out there that know a Vietnamese tailor/seamstress in the NY area, PLEASE let me know! In the meantime, I'll be checking those stores on Mott St near Pell St in Chinatown. from the morning 10am to 12noon, free 10 swatches for all students. after that, you pay some 25 cents for each swatch as a deposit. if you do come back to purchase the fabric, give them the receipt and they'll give back your cents. all swatches are cut and prepared on the rolls, so just tear. the people there are nice enough to cut and prepare swatches for you once it's run out. feel free to ask. read more

This place makes my life so easy. As an assistant costume designer for movies I am often sent on swatching journeys for fabric choices so we can custom make costumes. NY Elegant has pre-cut swatches attached to most fabric bolts. Prices and content are clearly marked and the store is well organized and easy to track down what you are looking for. The staff is always very friendly and helpful whether you are gathering swatches or buying 20 yards of their most expensive fabric. This is why when I have a choice I come here before any other high end fabric store and have definitely spent more money here than anywhere else. read more

This seems to be *the* place to find the most incredible fabrics. If you're looking for faux fur, this is definitely the place. They have stuff from $20-40 a yard on the cheaper end, to as much as $200/yard on the expensive end. But damn is this stuff amazing, spectacular colors shades, and the texture is so damn soft, it's like hugging a giant fur panda! read more

One of my more favorite fabric shops in NYC. The staff isn't stuck up and they can usually answer your questions or find someone who can. Their selection is quite broad. Swatches (save for fake fur @ $5/swatch) are usually free. They do have some amazing French fake furs ($150/yd) - super soft. Nice brocades, linens, cottons, cords etc. read more

Went there to shop for a specific type fabric, the staff there are horroble especially the the Korean staff had bad attitude and unwilling to help. After 20minutes in the store trying to find the fabric I needed but had no luck so I left to go to another smaller local store where the staff were willing to help a customer find what is needed. Will NOT go back to Elegant Fabrics again!! read more

This is a great store. I needed some fabric for an upholstery project and had no problem finding it here. Super organized, and everyone is really friendly. The owner at the counter was amazing: I needed some decorative nail heads for the fabric I bought (for the wall) and he recommended another store downtown. This place is a hidden gem. I decided to join my partners on their usual quarterly trip in search for designs and fabrics for inspiration and I was pleasantly surprised to see a variety of materials that we were able to take back to our studio on the same day.
