Great experience in March 2025, where I got to enjoy a special with a few glasses of nice red wine on a drippy night. Personally, I appreciated the variety in the menu, and the costs were reasonable (or as reasonable as they can be nowadays). Service was attentive and non-intrusive, and the wine by-the-glass offerings were better than average. I'm headed back in this week (July 2025) and will bring my wife along to enjoy a nice dinner. read more

Had a great dinner here this past weekend. We sat in the bar area, it gets really nice lighting with all the windows. Fun and refined atmosphere, food was delicious, and dessert was spectacular. Went to dinner last night. Party of 4 had reservations sat right away. Server arrived after about 5 minutes to take drink order Drinks arrived almost 5 minutes later Placed dinner order. My French onion soup was barely hot and lacked the rich flavor that usually accompanies French onion soup I had the Caesar salad topped with 3 very charred shrimp. The salad was very over dressed and lettuce wilted Salmon dish was very undercooked server took back and replaced with a new piece of fish that was severely overcooked after about 20 minutes. The rest of table has since finished our meals before new fish arrived The meatloaf was ok but the amount was less than the size of a deck of cards 4th dish was ok nothing to rave about Server took salmon off check but to say we were all very disappointed in our dining experience would be an overstatement I am not one to complain about a restaurant or server but you need to do better. The hamilton inn has been our favorite regional restaurant. But i would like to say that some dishes are getting way too salty. Specifically, the risotto/lobster special, and pasta dishes last time. We were parties of 4 and 5 and we all agreed. Please reduce the salt and let us add our own at the table. We drive 30 miles to eat here and we may not continue. As a Colgate student I went to this restaurant many times and enjoyed every experience there. If you're looking for the best place to have a nice meal near Colgate, the Hamilton Inn is in my opinion the best place to go--the quality of food, ambiance, and service is MUCH better than that of the Colgate Inn. During the school year it was a good spot for birthdays (usually give everyone at the table a complimentary glass of wine) and a good spot to take the parents. The food and service were always great and the prices reasonable for the offerings. It was also nice to be close to Colgate, but the short drive still made it feel like a bit of a destination. My boyfriend went 5-6 times senior year and each time at least two of the beers or wine his group ordered wouldn't be available. I typically ordered cocktails so I never experienced this problem, but he found it pretty annoying that their menu regularly lists alcohol options that they don't always have. Having had a bad experience in the past, we decided to give this place a second shot. It had always been a perennial favorite. It is regretfully not the same restaurant it once was. Where to begin. Bread service fee (I'm ok with this) but bread stale to the degree that it should have been tossed days ago. This is not an exaggeration. 2 goat cheese salads. Restaurant was out of salad greens except for romaine (I was told this in advance and was fine with it). Salad had a few thin slices of tasteless strawberries a few nuts, some goat cheese and flavorless dressing. Back in the day the salad dressing and the house salad (along with bread service featuring wonderful bread from a local bakery and house made cornbread) were two of the reasons we'd come. Stuffed mushroom not properly salted. Tofu bowl with tofu and whatever veggies were on hand over quinoa swimming in an inch of water from the quinoa being improperly drained. Truly unseasoned. Small order of greens which were ok and a one club soda. $130 inclusive of a 20% tip. The price is fine, the food was unfortunately not. We will not be returning. read more

Our meals, however, took over an hour to arrive- meanwhile meals for those arriving after us were served. The food was good- but my daughter's meal had two hairs embedded in the food. Let me start off by saying we were already giving The Hamilton Inn a second chance after a mediocre experience last year. We had reservations for 6:45pm and were seated right away. That's where everything starts to go downhill. We waited 25 minutes before anyone even came to our table. After 20 minutes, members of our group went to the bar to get their own drinks. Our waitress then went to a table who was seated 10 minutes after us and got their orders. When she eventually came to us we ordered bread which was $3 per person and was described as being bread made in house with "fresh butters and spreads". When it came out it was literally just a platter with bread and one container of butter. $18 for bread and butter, what a joke. We then ordered our entrees which didn't arrive until 8:15pm! I started eating and discovered a long black hair intertwined in my food. Someone else's entree was ice cold. They replaced my meal but didn't offer any sort of compensation or apologies. The room we were seated in had a fire going and was uncomfortably warm. I really wanted to enjoy The Hamilton Inn but there are many improvements that need to be made in order for them to be a successful business. I'm not sure if it's still run by Michael, but he catered our wedding years ago and it was a lovely experience and we like to support him but we can safely say we will not be returning to The Hamilton Inn. read more

This is the best food in the Hamilton area. I come here every time I visit. The ambience exemplifies the historical rural beauty of the area, the owner is so friendly and present that he often comes out to check in with guests, and it's worth coming back just to talk to the charming bartenders. We had dinner at the Hamilton Inn on 9/13/24. If my husband and I were dining alone we would have sat at the bar. We much prefer the casual bar area to the more formal dining room. The menus are the same. But there were 5 of us, so we sat at a round table in the corner of the bar with windows on two sides. It was so pleasant. Our server was very friendly without being obsequious. She made the experience fun. I had sea bass and my husband had salmon. Both entrees were delicious. I don't remember what our friends had but they raved about their meals also. We live about an hour away so we're not regulars. But we do try to go three or four times a year and it never disappoints. read more

Disappointing. Was visiting from out of town on a Sat night. First, waitress came over and told us about 4-5 items that were on the menu that they were out of. Ordered short rib skewers. Meat was not short rib and inedible. Waitress ended up crediting us. Rest of meal was eh. Halibut was overcooked. Stingy with the vegetables. Service incredibly slow. 7:30 reservation and didn't finish til after 10pm. This place has the friendliest staff I have ever encountered. I ended up being stranded in town for the night and they luckily had 1 room left. Tried this place out for dinner last night, and I was so impressed. I am a college student and I feel like this place is a haven for local people looking for high quality food - we were the youngest people in the entire place, and definitely the only college students. This made it feel like an escape from our classic college environment. We were treated to excellent service, as our coats were taken as soon as we walked in the door and our waitress made sure our every need was taken care of throughout the entire night. The food was outstanding and my friend, who has never liked scallops, was raving about theirs for hours afterwards. Two years ago it was great, tonight not as much. Not sure if the pandemic has affected the restaurant or not. We went around 7:15 pm on a Thursday with our great niece, a student at Colgate. We ordered an appetizer and our meals at the same time. I had a glass of wine. The appetizer came out promptly and three rolls. Then it was at least an hour before our meals came out. Our server mentioned that a bunch of take-out orders were in before ours. The meals were good albeit small portions for the price. I had Rack of Lamb, four pieces of lamb about 1/4 inch thick with beets and fingerling potatoes. It was just ok and all the menu stated. The menu made all the dinners sound like they had lots of fused flavors. I did not find it to be the case. It was generic tasting at best and not at all worth $35. I felt bad for ordering one of the most expensive things. Salad is a la carte as well. Our server comped the glass of wine for the long wait. read more

I visited the Hamilton Inn 0n 2/14/2019. I did have a reservation. I was seated immediately directly behind the bar. The bar patrons behinds were too close to my table by far. I could have been seated elswhere,more tables were available. They offered a 4 course Valentine's Day special for 75 dollars per person. I had the Portobello bisque excellent! The oysters Rockefeller (3) were also good. The main course consisted of shrimp tempura and petite filet mignon. The shrimp had good size but tasted more like beer battered fish. Petite filet means petite here! Very , very small serving of filet. The 4th course dessert was also weak The lemon cake was very stiff/dense.The owner/ manager did come to our table to attempt amendment but meal was done. My opinion is overpriced for middle of the road fare. I will not recommend to my friend nor family. read more

We had a great meal at Michaels Fine Food and Spirits. They were great and the food was great. Someone told us that the Hamilton Inn was owned by the same people and that the food was good. We went there the next day and ate in the bar. They were offering a BBQ brisket for their special served with yams, mushrooms and onions. My husband and I both ordered the special. Disappointed is putting it mildly. It was like a tough pot roast just smothered in a BBQ sauce. I don't even think the meat was cooked with any sauce. The onions were very over cooked. I said something to the bartender but she made no attempt to remedy the situation. I still am not even sure it was brisket. Certainly was not barbecued. One drink each and dinner came to $80. This is the nicest Inn I've ever stayed in! The food was outstanding and the servers are warm and friendly. It's a great place to go to dinner with your family or for a romantic dinner out! We decided to stay the night since it's over an hour from our home. We loved the Inn and the breakfast the next morning was fabulous! Homemade breads and muffins! This Inn and restaurant was completely redone in 2017 under new management and it is a gem. Great food, great atmosphere. I have eaten in the main restaurant as well as in the bar. The bar menu is fabulous and the restaurant menu is top notch and always changing - with the seasons and with the creative ideas of the chefs. I appreciate that you can order from the bar menu while sitting in the restaurant or the restaurant menu while sitting in the bar. PLEASE try their cocktails - always fresh, inventive and delicious. I've been out of town for a couple of months and I miss the Hamilton Inn. The rooms are beautifully decorated, each with its own character. Ask for a tour! read more

The restaurant re-opened last year, and the cooking is better than ever. I recommend asking to be seated in the pub section, which is very nice and gives you access to the cheaper pub menu. The food on both menus is delicious, but it's nice to get a deal. I went with some friends on Saturday night, and we had fabulous service and delicious food. The consensus was that the risotto with the mussels was the best dish. Oh, and the cocktails were great, too! read more

Nicely located, building is beautiful, great service, and food was very good. Had the cod dinner special and it was wonderful with a lot of flavor which is difficult with cod being that it's such a bland fish. I would absolutely come here again next time I'm in town. read more

Everything is the way it should be. Good Food, engaging staff and the Chefs have it locked down. Michael is doing it right bringing another awesome place to eat in Hamilton. Local farm to table food done right. Alanna is awesome in the bar. The meat runs a little on the rarer side so if you like Medium order Medium Well. Apps are amazing. We went to the Hamilton Inn to celebrate a birthday the other night. We arrived with reservations at 7:00 pm, and stood at the Host stand for about 5 minutes before anyone spoke with us. Several employees made eye contact, but walked by without a word. The wait wasn't unreasonable, but a simple word or two makes a place more welcoming than standing at an unmanned station watching everyone else in the dining room. The hostess finally came and seated us with our "signed" birthday menu (not sure why I want a menu signed by a bunch of people when I have no clue who they are, and they're signing for someone they have no clue who is - but I guess it helps in writing this review). We were never told about the coat room, so we just hung our heavy winter coats over the backs of our chairs. After sitting for about 10 minutes, our waiter came up and apologized for the delay, saying he'd be with us in a few more minutes. That was fine, but he could have at least filled the water glasses and brought bread or something. We started with spinach salads, which were very good, and a Gin and Tonic each. I ordered the Braised Short Rib ragout, and my wife got the Potato Crusted Salmon. However, after eating our salads, we sat there for 50 minutes, without the waiter in sight! Finally, he came up and asked "would you like to see a dessert menu?" We quizzically looked at each other, but said "yes," not being sure if maybe he was trying to whet our appetites for after the meal. When he brought the menus back I asked "are the entrees going to be showing up soon?" That was when we got the momentary, frozen "deer-in-the-headlights" look. He ACTUALLY thought we had already received and eaten our entrees, even though the empty salad plates and empty glasses were sitting right there (for 50 minutes). Of course he seemed mortified and assured us that they would be right out. After a little while longer the dishes were brought and they were both quite good. We then ordered the Chocolate Mousse (to share) for dessert. This was another questionable stage. I'm not sure who told the chef how to make mousse, but it's supposed to be light and fluffy, or whipped. This had the consistency of a solid brick of chocolate. Don't get me wrong, it was very tasty, but it was NOT a mousse. Overall, I would have given higher than three stars if the service had been even halfway decent because the food was very good. Of course, I could have easily given lower if I wrote the review right after I got home. We also heard wait staff at other tables describing specials, which were never told to us so we couldn't consider them. I'd think at the very least the management should have comped our dessert, or our drinks - we only had the one Gin and Tonic because he never asked if we wanted another. *shrug* All-in-all, I kind of doubt we'll go back. read more
