The Hammam Spa bills itself as Toronto's most coveted spa experience. Nothing could be further from the truth. A more appropriate slogan is Toronto's least coveted spa experience. Here is my experience. After receiving a gift certificate from my son for a one hour deep tissue massage I booked an 11am appointment on a Tuesday morning a week ago. I arrived early and explained that I needed to leave the spa by 12:25 for an important lunch appointment close by. After being assured everything was on time I sat in the smallish waiting area fully robed and ready to go. While awaiting the 11am start, I picked up a copy of the Toronto Star and it was just the remnants of a 10 day old newspaper. Other reading materials were old and dated. At 11:05 am, I went to the receptionist and asked when my 11am appointment would start. Right away she said. I ended up going up to her 3 more times. Finally a stressed masseuse arrived at 11:20 am and apologized for a scheduling mix-up saying my masseuse had left and she was recruited as a replacement. I was then taken to a spa room that was unfinished. Bright light in my eyes and she apologized that no dimmer switch had been installed. No other amenities, no music or sensory fragrance indicating a coveted spa experience was to begin. But the real problem became evident right away as loud banging that came from ongoing renovation work at the Spa was non-stop along with loud talking from staff outside the room. 25 minutes in I had enough and left and went to the men's change room. Instead of the usual large basket of fluffy towels there was only one towel remaining even though there wasn't evidence of other spa goers. Pure neglect like everything else. On leaving the Spa I asked for the Spa Directors contact information and was given a business card for the owner who also claims to be the Spa Director. The receptionist said she's rarely in and after 10 years she feels she doesn't need to be there. Obviously she does. I was told I would hear from her in the afternoon of this disastrous experience. No call. I called her number using the business card I was given. Like everything else at Hammam it was an old number that the gentleman I spoke to said had been his number for years. He said he was tired of disgruntled customers calling him to complain about the bad experiences at Hammam Spa. I then called the receptionist and was told the Spa Director was in New York. I tried the PR and Marketing director after several calls none were returned. Finally I tried emailing and eventually late in the next day, 30 plus hours later I spoke to the Spa Director who said she was caught in a snowstorm in New York and couldn't call. She obviously has never heard of using her cell phone as she had plenty of time to call. The subsequent conversation with her were met with complete indifference and she said people make mistakes and I shouldn't have been so upset and besides they had to finish their renovations. No sincere apology just lame excuses. I struggled to get her to agree to send my sons money back as for some reason she thought the experience I had was a job well done. It wasn't. Finally after a 3 day wait my son told me the credit came through. In conclusion and the Spa Director told me in her own words ... It's a free country when I informed her I would put a scathing review on all possible social media sites. I love love love the steam room. I got the steam pass which gives you one month unlimited usage of the steam room and lounge. Turkish steam rooms are my favourite and this one is a beauty. The smell of Hamman spa is so relaxing. Im not sure what the other services are like but the steam room is amazing. read more

I would never recommend or return to this spa. There did not appear to be one adult professional staff member in the whole place. Atmosphere, small, dark, dingy. Not relaxing. Including the "tea room" with one tea pot (no choices of tea) and the cheapest cookies you can find at No Frills. Women's change room was poorly designed. One small round soft bench for all to share - a distance from most lockers. Three shower stalls - one out of order, one out of conditioner, and one with shampoo in both the shampoo and conditioner containers - as you can imagine I jumped from stall to stall to get a shower. Grooming mirrors are 2 feet across from the washroom stalls - and yes, someone did drop the stink bomb - not pleasant. Area poorly lit. We are not at a night club guys. Grooming products are the cheapest possible on the market. 2 hairdryers - both dirty and sticky. Not what I expect at a spa that charges $150 for 60 minute massage. Young staff liked primping in the change room mirrors - they spent more time there than me. Steam bath smelled funky. And we were the first guests of the morning. No essence oils - just funk. RMT - students maybe at best???? More like someone who received a crash course - and charging top $$$. My husband and I had the couples suite and both felt the RMTs were unqualified. Don't understand some of the negative reviews on here. This place is amazing and the staff are nice. I had a one hour Swedish massage and a Turkish Bath. Let me tell you that massage was heaven! I got a full body massage by a male RMT (forgot his name) and he gave me the best, most relaxing massage of my life! As for the Turkish bath, omg, my skin is still super soft and hydrated from it four days later. I've never had one before so it was a new experience for me. You basically have do lay down on a marble table looking thing and the lady will dump water all over your body, followed by an exfoliation of the whole body, then puts these huge bubbles on you (this part is really cool), and then rubs you down with black soap, and finally, pours water on you again. After that you turn around on your stomach so she can repeat the same process for the back. My lady's name was really nice (I believe her name is Michelle, sorry I forgot again). And I don't want to forget the steam room--it's definitely the biggest and most beautiful steam room I've ever been in. The relaxing coloured lighting and the smell of aromatic scents really sets the tone and relaxes you; just don't forget to stay hydrated. As I mentioned early my skin is so soft still! Like I don't even have to wear any lotion so my skin won't dry up and crack, it's just that hydrated. And while waiting in between each service there is a tea room which is basically a lounge area where you can sip on tea or lemon water and fruit juice, and munch on snacks such as apples, almonds, cranberries. There is also a bunch of magazines to choose from that you can read to kill time. This is a luxury I definitely could get used to once a month. I can not express how much I love this place. I specially love the Turkish bath and steam room. Such a cozy, and relaxing setting. I had done a multitude of services there from waxing to, mani/pedis but I would mostly recommend the massages and definitely the bath. The staff are very friendly and professional. Terrible customer staff! My therapist was okay but not worth enough to make me go back. The receptionist is rude enough to make you feel the opposite of relax. The tour was done almost in a running pace. Staff keep passing by our 'quiet zone' running. When you are in the room with the therapist you can hear people talking and doors getting banged. They don't have a pool nor a hot tube. On top of that, it's more expensive than majority of the spas that have pools and hot tube. Don't go there, use your money somewhere else. read more

SO I received a facial from Kendra- warning, do not go to her. I told her my daily face care ritual, which included some exfoliation because my skin is considered "normal" (not oily not dry), and she completely ignored this information. The facial started out normally, then when she did extractions she squeezed my nose so hard that my eyes started tearing up. She didn't pay attention to that, or even ask how I was or if she was hurting me. Then at the end she sprayed some exfoliating spray that burned my face. I asked her what that was and she said it was a slow acting exfoliant- because of this, my face became so dry, to the point where my cheeks were tight when I smiled, and I had embarrassing flaky skin constantly hanging off my face, My skin was perfectly healthy before this facial, and she caused it to become dry and flaky. not health looking. Also when trying to make light conversation to her, she would find a way to end the conversation in one sentence- estheticians should be very personable and she had no personality. I'm not saying we had to become best friends, but at least participate in conversation when presented to you by a potential client. I sensed much pretentiousness from the employees at this spa which turns me off completely from ever having a treatment done here again. read more

I booked a facial at Hammam in the midst of going through some very hard times in my personal life. I wanted to get the most of it so specifically booked Hamman so I could relax in the steam room first. My facial service was incredible. I forget the name of the amazing therapist, but she was blonde and had hipster tortoise shell glasses. It was a blonde girl at the front desk who completely ruined the experience for me and upset me for the rest of the day. What I thought was a 1pm facial, was actually at 130pm. When I checked in and said "I had a 1pm facial" I was not corrected. So I planned my visit accordingly and was waiting in the tea room at 1pm for my service. By 115pm I had not been retrieved so I went to the front desk to inquire. I was told fairly rudely that my service was at 130pm to which I replied I thought it was at 1pm, no one had told me differently...to which I was told to go sit down and wait. I asked that they tell my friend, who had a massage at 1pm and would be done at 2pm, that I'd be a half hour later, to which they said no problem and then did nothing about. Like I said, the actual facial was incredible but when I went to pay a young woman at the front asked me how my time was and I admitted I was a little annoyed that the time of my service had been messed up... that's when this blonde woman (not dressed in their traditional black so perhaps she is a manager, in which case she should be fired for not knowing how to speak to clients) started barking at me that "she remembered taking the appointment and it was at 130pm...." and so on...to which I said ok and that I felt that she was attacking me, but in return did not receive apology from her or anything after her uncalled for outburst. I did not go to Hamman to be attacked by the front desk staff and if it was the case that I did get my times mixed up, customer right or wrong, that is NO way to treat a client, anyone should know better. I was distraught for the rest of the day, unsure why this "manager" or whoever she was would yell at me as she did when my visit was to relieve myself of stress not be treated to more. There are many good places to get a facial in the city and unfortunately after this experience and being treated so rudely by the front desk staff, one woman in particular, there is no reason why I would return. read more

It's more like 2.5 stars to 3 stars, can't decide. I came here last summer for the first time, when they had a promotion for massage, which was significantly cheaper than the full price, still quite pricy though (came out to $120 something for the hour of massage). I heard lots of things about this place, how the hammam steam room was amazing, the decor was great etc., and it seemed to be really well-known which is why I really wanted to try it. First off, the decor was quite nice when I entered, and was pleased to see that they had Dermalogica. The other brands I wasn't so familiar with, but still nice that they had a small retail area with a small sitting area to fill out forms. Upon entering the locker room, I was left on my own to figure everything out, I wasn't told where slippers were, how to use the lockers or anything like that, but using my common sense, I figured it out. Just would've felt more welcoming and attentive if they went through those details with me. Next up, I found my way out to the sitting lounge to have a glass of water, which was located between the men's change room and women's change room, but I did find the layout somewhat weird. Had they not have shown me where the steam room was, I would've never been able to find it. It was located down a dark, candlelit hallway along with the hammam rooms. Still the feel of the place was great, although I could tell the place is starting to get wornout, and some places seem even dirty, and potentially unhygienic. Then for the RMT massage, I can only say that the massage was so-so, below average if you asked me. I've had much better massages by NON-RMTS, so you can imagine that the massage itself wasn't any special and if it weren't located in this area would definitely not be worth the money. Now let me say, I did come back a second time earlier this year with my husband, again with their so-called promotion pricing, and he did not enjoy it at all, saying that the massage was like nothing, there was no pressure nor did it soothe his muscles. Again, my RMT was so-so. Basically, you're paying premium prices to use the facilities, the location, and the hype, not so much for the quality of the service. Don't get me wrong, they were courteous, but I know what a good massage is and I can say that Hammam has to invest in some better experienced RMT's. read more

And the women who work there are very lovely and friendly. I felt so mellowed out and in another world after the session I didn't feel like I was dt Toronto. recently had an aromatherapy massage and i expected a diffuser in the room so that it would be really therapeutic. however there was just a bowl of hot water and oil under the massage table and apparently it was supposed to be in the massage oil itself but i didnt smell it that much. i was a little disappointed. still the steam room was the best. read more

I loved coming to Hammam Spa. I tried to make monthly visits for a massage and a facial. The employees are really skilled and I have never had a bad experience with the service. The lounge area is decorated nicely but it's very noisy due to the constant squeaking of the floors when people walk. You hear this when you are getting your service done and it really takes away from the relaxing atmosphere. What's most shocking is the recent price hike. There has been a 20-30% price hike on most services that I enjoy. And unfortunately the whole experience is just not worth the value of those new prices. Have been wanting to visit for awhile and managed to make it here on a Sunday at 6 pm. We didn't realize that they close at 7 and so there was no opportunity to try the steam room. As other reviews have mentioned, the customer service needs a little work. As first time visitors a health form was required to be completed before the massage. We completed the form and we were shown to the waiting area. We were confused as usually you get into a robe and slippers before a massage. We asked again and the woman who showed us in told us she thought we were there for pedicures. Seemed strange but however.... We were now running later and had to quickly change as our massage therapists were waiting for us. The massage was great! No complaints at all about the massage. 45 minute massage was $130 which is quite pricey. The decor is nice and the massage was great. Overall it was an ok experience. A massage therapist who's name was different than my receipt... makes me wonder who is actually doing my massage and if they are actually credentialed as an RMT. Based on the pathetic massage I received, despite clear instruction for firm deep pressure, I am really wondering who they are hiring. Creeky floors above the tea area. Difficult to breath in the steamroom. The changing lights make for a somewhat scary psychedelic experience. Oversized bathrobes. Staff was great as there was a mix up with the bookings. They were able to call in a back up therapist and have him start within the hour. They also gave me a gift bag of goodies which was unnecessary but an excellent touch. The baths were great - super clean & beautiful. The Turkish spa itself had this stupid disco lights that gave me a migraine and my very expensive head massage was awful - made the migraine worse. A good little retreat on the beaten path of trendy King West. I have been to Hammam Spa several times, all for the same treatment, a facial. I know this is a hot spot for celebrities when they are in town, but I wouldn't say you get the start treatment. I've always enjoyed my service, the facial is a long process that I find really does make my skin glow afterwards - but I would highly recommend the mini-facial (you save $50 and the difference is not vast). My Estheticians have always been very pleasant and knowledgeable, I expect them to know everything about my skin, and they do. The front desk service can definitely be improved (was once double charged, used a credit card on file) they are nice enough but not what I would consider first class treatment. Lastly, the atmosphere... yes this spa is more contemporary and up to date than many others I've been to in the city, but it still doesn't break the luxe barrier. The rooms are not sound proof, which made my facial a bit awkward, my robe was ripped and tattered and the decor is getting a bit tired. Overall the steam room is a nice little gem and the effort is there - I suppose half the battle. Hammam Spa is my favourite spa because they always take care of my beauty needs and it's a perfect place to relax and rejuvenate. The spa itself is gorgeous and the change rooms are always clean and stocked with towels and toiletries. The customer service is outstanding. Everyone that works there is polite and goes above and beyond to ensure that each and every visit is wonderful. My favourite treatment is the facial. I was at the Toronto location 3 weeks ago celebrating my birthday with my girlfriend. The session was great and when we were about to leave, we have discovered that my boots were missing. I have looked around and asked cleaning and front desk personal to assist. This was 2 pm on Friday and I was heading back to the office. Unfortunately, the only response I have received " It has never happened before". Here I was , leaving the spa in flip flops amidst February snow day and heading back into my office downtown Toronto. It was humiliating experience to walk through the lobby and the worst part of this, I never got a call back to follow up from this so-called high end SPA. I used to come there once in a while with my g/f. Never again. The ignorance and the service was very disappointing ... I would recommend to stay away from this space read more

The steam room is good but overpriced. If it was half the price, Id use it way more often. The massage was good but overpriced and you could hear people walking around and talking while being massaged. I've had better RMT for 50$ less than what I paid here for 1 hour. If you are looking for a quiet relaxed spa this is not the place for you. I had a Detoxifying Algae Wrap and the room I had my wrap in was close to the sauna room. During my treatment I could hear people talking, doors closing and people walking around upstairs. This was very distracting and annoying especially when you are trying to relax. Their custom-made heated marble table was only heated on one side of my body and when I went to take a shower to wash off all the Algae the water was freezing cold. I was told the water was cold because the building was old. I thought I was going to high end spa because of the cost unfortunately this was not the case. The Clay wrap was a good experience but again it is not relaxing as it should be because it is everything is in a hurry. after my treatment finished i realized there is a discount from my workplace. the receptionist kindly mention she can honour if i bring my badge,however when i came back a day later the other receptionis(who was not as friendly as the first one) didn't honors it as it was supposed too. Had an overall pleasant experience at this place. The steam room was definitely a plus for me.

I have had a good number of massages, but this was the best, and well worth paying more than I have in the past. The spa is very clean without looking sterile, nicely decorated, and the music is just loud enough that you can listen if you want or tune it out. The used towels and wraps are taken away and fresh towels stocked every few minutes, but unobtrusively. The steam room was quite hot, but it was relaxing and warmed my muscles nicely before the massage. I had reservations about a steamy room with multicoloured LEDs, but it wasn't too psychedelic, and I actually found it pleasant and calming having the light gently shift in color in the room. There was enough steam that you could just see across the room, so I don't think a previous reviewer's worry that people could have sex is too serious (the room isn't that big, and you'd be able to hear, too :P). The wall with the door is all glass, so I didn't feel claustrophobic the way I have when I've tried to used enclosed wooden steam rooms/saunas. After a while (with a short break for cold cucumber and orange water outside the steam room), the therapist came to the steam room, and my boyfriend and I were instructed to cool off in the showers and towel off. They then led us to the suite where couples massages take place. Each therapist spoke to us and figured out what we wanted (you can get any type of massage they offer within the couples massage, so if one person wants deep tissue and the other wants hot stone, that's okay). They left the room, we took off our robes, hopped under the blankets on the beds, and almost fell asleep just laying there for the therapists because we were already so relaxed. My therapist was Amir, and wow. I have always felt sore the day after a massage, and a massage therapist friend has told me that means you weren't warmed up for the level of work done. I feel NO PAIN after this massage, but my back and neck felt amazing after the massage (I've already ruined it by carrying heavy things, so the tension is back, but no muscle pain from being worked on!). He was very good about checking in on how things felt, if I felt tenderness in certain spots, and if the work he'd done was sufficient or if I still felt tension or pain in an area. I was a bit confused when he did things like lift back my shoulder and just hold it for a minute or two, which I had never had a therapist do before, but OMG, the tension was gone after. He worked on my sore, stiff neck until the last possible moment to try to get the tension to ease up. I felt very well taken care of. He did give me a little reminder to work on my posture for improvement in neck issues, which wasn't the most spa-like, but also made me feel like I was being treated by an actual trained therapist who wants me to not be in pain, which I prefer to just relaxing and then going back to being in pain. After the massage, we went back to the team room. I don't think they'll kick you out until closing if you really want to stay there and hang out. After the steam, we showered in the changing room showers, where they had soap, shampoo, and conditioner. They also have a variety of hair styling products, lotion, hair ties, q-tips, two hair driers (one with various defusers for different types of hair), and feminine products, just in case. I discovered that I'd forgotten the combination I'd set on the keypad locker with my things in it, but they were very friendly and just opened it up for me, no problems. Payment was fast, and we both were able to pay separately (same price per person for a couples massage as two separate massages) and get receipts for insurance. The service wasn't pushy, and you can pay the therapist a tip in cash with a little envelope or as part of the credit card transaction. I would probably be considered one of those "chatty bitches" that the reviewer below is referring to. Well, not in a rude way, because I maintain spa etiquette but if you go to the spa with a friend, you tend to chat.... Anyway.... My best gal pal and I went to Hammam on the weekend because my hubby got me a gift card for Christmas. Hey, I spend my days chasing around our busy little 11 month old. I deserve it. He booked a Turkish bath for me and a signature pedicure so my friend booked the same and we requested a couples room for our bath so that we could do it together, which is more fun. I've been to spas before, but of course, but never a Turkish one. It's very pretty inside but if you look closely, you can sorta see the "basement-y" thing going on. The change room was excellent, very clean with everything you need there for your skin and hair if you forgot. Great plush robes and slippers are included. The spa has a pleasant scent as well, very incense-y. We hit the steam room and it was WAY way WAY WAAAAAY too hot for me. I'm not one for heat intensity like that but my friend convinced me to not turn around and walk right out so we sat down (and were probably "chatty bitches" at this point) and it wasn't too bad. Until the light turned red. They have this slowly flashing colored light, blue, green, yellow and then red. The red is AWFUL! It literally makes me you feel like you're in some kind of inferno! NOT RELAXING!!! Then my friend joked that a serial killer could lock us in there and that'd be it and that was it for me! Buh bye steam room! It's just extremely hard to breathe in there. Good to warm up in, that's for sure. We started our bath. They had us lay down together on a marble slab. It felt great, very relaxing but both of our backs started aching from laying on the hard stone. They splashed us with water from bowls for an hour and then did a scrub, then soap, then finished with oil. It was definitely a fun experience but I can splash water on myself at home. For much cheaper than what this cost. But, overall, it was cool, fun, and felt good. Next they took us to the tea room and gave us some snacks--dates and halva. Apparently the snacks are only for the people who do the bath. We had some yummy tea and I started to get colder, and colder... and colder.... it was VERY chilly after being in the heat. Not so good. They did not time manage well and we ended up waiting probably 45 min between procedures. That's ok if you're not pressed for time. I have to give the pedicure 1 star. That's it. It kinda sucked. My friend's pedi also sucked. It was $75 and the Vietnamese nail salon that normally does my nails did a 100 times better for 1/3rd of the price. They didn't do much for the skin on my feet here though the paraffin was ok. She barely did the foot massage. For that amount of money, I expected more. The polish selection is excellent and she applied well but my friend's polish didn't dry! We sat under the dyers for a good 40 minutes and her's was still sticky and they ended up giving her 50% off the price. Overall my experience was positive was but not extraordinary. We had a great time and felt great afterwards too but the day cost about $250 (including tip) per person and we only had two treatments. I didn't feel it was worth that price at all. It's certainly not bad here but certainly not amazing. 3/5 stars, middle of the road. I would probably not go back unless I got another gift card in which case I'd definitely try a facial and massage instead. I must compliment the staff here in general though because they are very friendly, very accomodating and they make you feel like a queen, no matter what treatment you're doing. I have used Hammam Spa in the past and the spa services are decent. The steam room was fine. The facial was fine. However, the spa itself is noisy, both within and from the noise upstairs. The Turkish bath/massage is a joke compared to the experience you get in an actual Turkish style bath/massage (and I have had in Turkey, as well as Morocco and Budapest). I am giving Hammam Spa one star though because of their repeated poor customer service and condescending and arrogant attitude. First, you cannot get through to anyone at their phone number - you are directed to the website or you can leave a message. That is not helpful customer service. Second, on several occasions, I have left a message and have never received a return call. That is not helpful customer service. Third, their specials are highly misleading. For example, their January 2014 special says "20% off any service when you book online...use promo code 2014". I purchased a gift certificate online for two specific massages and entered the promo code. I understood the special would have applied to this, especially since the online purchase page had a box where the promo code could be entered (which I entered). The 20% was not taken off the purchase price. I left two voicemail messages for Hammam Spa asking them to call me back to give me a credit for the difference. I never heard back from them. Finally, after I had to email them (again, it is not helpful customer service if I have to spend a large amount of time chasing you down) Hammam Spa called me back today to say that gift certificates purchased online are not covered by this special, notwithstanding I was purchasing gift certificates for services. I suggested to her that the special should specifically set out in the future that it does not apply to purchases of gift certificates for specific services and I believe she agreed that would be helpful (duh!). I asked if there was anything she could do for me to which she repeated that gift certificates are not available. Her tone was arrogant and her refusal to do anything reinforces for me that Hammam Spa has very poor customer service and a condescending and arrogant attitude. For these reasons, I will not use Hamman Spa in the future personally nor purchase gifts for others there. It was my first time at Hammam, and I booked a 60 minute massage and then asked if they had an open pedicure appointment for my awful feet and they said yes! Hooray! The place itself is pretty, and the hustle and bustle of King West disappears as soon as you walk down the stairs. The changeroom is average, but has everything you need. They offered up the steamroom, but that's not my "thing", although one of the other customers I was speaking with said it was amaazing! The lounge area is small, and my biggest pet peeve was the creaking coming from the floor upstairs; it was impossible to relax with that sound, along with the chatty employees. However, once I was lead to the massage room, relaxation ensued. My male masseuse was unbelievable, and the massage was the best massage I have ever had..and I've had plenty. He paid attention to those areas I had asked him to, and finished the appointment by showing me stretches I could do to help with my tense muscles. I felt like a new person! My pedicurist was also wonderful, but the employees doing pedicures on one another nearby while gossiping about a colleague made that part a tad frustrating (but my toes looked great!). Overall, the services I had were awesome but the atmosphere needs some serious work, as there's far too much chatting and noise going on for a spa..even one that's downtown! read more

Incredible. A piece of heaven in downtown Toronto. I cannot believe I have lived in King West Village for a year and not found this place. The steam room is incredible, the customer service stupendous and the massages fabulous. I also rescheduled the massages same day a few days ago due to an emergency and it was rescheduled without charge. Wow. I found my new favourite place. read more

The services in the spa like massages are great however I went for a manicure pedicure and the whole experience was a disappointment. They used shellac which didn't dry well and when I formally complained they said they could re do the color at no cost - that mean removing and putting it again and no reimbursement. The second time the application was better but results were not as great as I get in other places. They also confused my name and sent me a cancelation for my service.
